CNNW CNN Newsroom With Brooke Baldwin November 24, 2015

At a gas station as he was en route from brussels to paris along with the man Everyone Wants to find Salah Abdeslam just two days before the attacks. Salah abdeslam is still on the run. Police say this guy drove to paris to actually drop off one of the suicide bombers who targeted the soccer stadium here in the city. Also breaking right now, the french prosecutor has Just Announced confirming the attack mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud return ed to the crime scene after the shootings. Which crime scene, e we dont know. How soon after, we dont know that either, but thats significant as well. The visit happened some time before he was killed last week in a paris suburb during this massive Early Morning police raid that lasted some seven hours. Lets begin with these two pieces of news. Lets go straight to ivan watson, live here in paris with me. Ivan, we have also learned in addition to the two threads, we know the sense of urgency from the raid because potentially this eminent plot and now we have learned theyme menwanted te on the financial. Area of the city. Yeah, this is a chilling detail. Basically the french prosecutor saying that Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the man who was killed in that raid, that he was planning an attack just five or six days after the initial attack on november 13th. He and at least one other accomplice were planning to attack an area in paris thats basically you head straight down this boulevard past the financial district. A lot of International Companies there, a shopping district as well. And so the timing there very crucial that they were able to intercept him before that took place. They also noted that he was believed to have been in touch with one of the suicide bombers on the night of the november 13th attack. And then that other chilling detail that this man who was believed to have helped organize the attack actually returned to the scene of the crime to the theater where more than 80 people were massacred during that sold out rock concert. Very chilling details there. Ivan watson, thank you so much. I want to broaden this out and bring in cnn contributor michael wies. Lets begin with the final point ivan was making. Youre a Senior Editor at the daily beast. To think that this mastermind would have been so brazen as to return to the location that is now flanked with flowers and candles as far as the eye can see to return to the scene to do what . Possibly to film the aftermath of his carnage. Remember, isis thrives on its propaganda value. And they themselves have released videos taken from news organizations showing both some of the gunfire that took place on that night but also then the weeping and mourning by the victims and essentially all of paris. Its brazen, but then its not so brazen when you consider that he was looking to kill himself and quite possibly did. This was a suicide mission. This ended ultimately with everybody being killed. So for him to go out and get footage and sort of upload it back to isis Central Command whether its in raqqah or some other affiliate in europe, thats job done right there. Thats Mission Accomplished for hi not Mission Accomplished when it came to this plt to attack or to bomb the financial area here in paris. Thats what were also learning that the mastermind and one of the bombers killed in the raid, thats what they want ed to do and would be another central part in the city of paris that they wanted to take on. They are essentially trying to turn it into a province in iraq or syria. A series of spectaculars that essentially grinds all business to a halt, traumatizes and in the very strict sensz of the word terrorizes the local population. What they achieved in belgium, which is the belgium authorities preempting what they consider to be an eminent attack, thats a sign of their reach and capability. And theres no doubt. If they had their druthers, they would attack like they did in paris every single day and would have done many in quick successi succession. When i say its Mission Accomplished, what i mean is it didnt end with him kind of going back to syria. It was always going to end with Martyr Campaign of some kind. Thats how you write your name in the stars. Of course, thats what they want. Thats the goal. Thats the dream. But do we know we know there was such a sense of urgency in this raid at 4 30 in the morning local time here last week. Do we know if that eminent plot is precisely what were learning about tonight is this financial district here . I dont know. I think its still at the level of speculation. My guess is there were several different strands that people are investigating now. One in belgium, another one in an attack that didnt take place in france. But look, as i said earlier, it was always about doing multiple assaults within very close space of each other. If you look at the regionwide reach of isis and what its managed to achieve, you have the bombing several months ago followed by the metrojet explosion followed by beirut followed by paris. They arent going to stop there. They are looking for successes. This is about isis showing the world they are no longer conf e confined to their caliphate. They were jihadists international. They have a global reach. That is to sell their own propaganda. Its always the black flag enveloping the globe. They want us to think they are in our backyard and capital cities. Thats what they say. Theres a bit of delay here. We were just reading in the New York Times they have somebody who specifically in charge of external operations, attacks uds outside of iraq and syria. This is what they want. Michael wies, thank you so much. This note for you. Through this investigation into the paris terrorist attacks, we want to remember the victims and the survivors and you can do so by doing the impact your world website at cnn. Com impact. Coming up next, we have more breaking news for you. Specifically turkey shooting down a russian jet. Vladimir putin vowing serious consequences. New video now surfacing showing rebels firing shots. Anderson cooper gets a look at these training operations. And breaking news out of chicago today. Moments ago this Police Officer appearing in court charged with firstdegree murder in the shooting death of this africanamerican teenager. This video could be released any moment. Youre watching cnn, im Brooke Baldwin, live in paris. Welcome become, youre watching cnn, im Brooke Baldwin here in paris. The other huge story heating up today, Vladimir Putin is calling the downing of the russian war plane by turkey, kwoetd, a stab in the back. Stunning video captured both pilots ejecting from those planes followed by a a sound of gunshots. Watch for yourself. This video shows rebels shooting at the pilots. Turkey says it downed the plane after moscow violated its air space despite warning after warning after warning. Moments ago at the white house, president obama was asked about this and spoke out about the russian jet being shot out of the sky. Turkey, like every country, has a right to defend its territory and its air space. I think its very important right now for us to make sure that both the russians and. The turks are talking to each other to find out exactly what happened and take measures to discourage any kind of escalation. Cnns Senior International correspondent Nick Paton Walsh is live in istanbul. Do we know the fate, first of all, of these pilots . We know that one of the pilots has now been confirmed dead, killed by fire emanating from the ground. That machine gunfire you were seeing before he even landed while he was in the air. We know that from Russian Military officials now. They have also just said in the last few minutes or so that a Search Rescue operation was launched with two Russian Helicopters and one of those came under attack from ground fire as well. And a marine on board, one of those rescue helicopters was killed. Thats two confirmed dead russian soldiers now. The first open ly acknowledged fatalities the russians have had here and it comes at the hands of a nato member. Turkey says that they warned that jet to clear its air space ten time in five minutes. Thats the result it seems that caused the pilots to eject. And the rescue operation attack those helicopters. Beginning with this instance, which russia denies it violated which russia say it is blamed turkey for violating syrian air space. Still a dispute about the elements of the events here. They have escalated tensions along this volatile border. So many air forces and so many efforts of decon flix. They are speaking weeks ago to stop instances from happening because turkey is violating air space many times. Those efforts really have to be put aside now is clearly going to be a a very challenge canning time ahead here. Russia, i think, to some degree, humiliated that it had this air force. Well see lots of diplomatic anger back and potentially their bid at economic sanctions. Russia and turkey so starchily on the other side of the war inside syria. Some say frankly in their approaches to how to deal with isis, that that difference has flaired up now into this military altercation. The potential escalation that could be forthcoming is significant. Well get to that with my next panel. I have from washington retired air force colonel cedrick lateen, cnns military analyst. Also ben joining me from londo. , so gentlemen, welcome to both of you. Colonel, my first question to you. When we hear turkey saying they warned these pilots ten times within a a span of five minutes, tell me about those warnings. How would that have been communicated . Brooke, normally they do it over a common radio frequency. So the russian pilots should have been able to hear the turkish air controller telling them they violated turkish air space and need to turn back. Thats normally what happens. The other would communicate visually. It sounds like they wouldnt do the visual part at all. Im curious staying with you, would there have been anyone back in russia monitoring those communications who could have heard the warnings and could have overridden that and told the pilots to get the heck out of there. Its possible but generally that kind of control would have happened at their u control center, which is in syria. Obviously, they also have control centers in russia itself, but the controlled effort from syria and they are supposed to actually communicate that. That control center should have had had that information as well. Ideally, there would also have been a hot line, but apparently that did not work either. Ben, the next question. When you hear Vladimir Putin saying serious consequences. Whats his next move . Russia can do a lot of damage to turkey. 60 of turkeys gas comes pr russia. And the whole stretch of the Turkish Coast depends on russian tourism. 4 million tourists came to turkey. Thats a lot of sanctions that putin can play with there. And just to make matters worse, turkey is supposed to have a Nuclear Power station for it. So lots of levers that putin can press there. I think putin is waiting to see what comes out of the nato summit today. It was very interesting earlier on to see putins First Response trying to divide nato saying they were betting isis. You talk about the levers that putin can pull. We see the pie the lots coming down. You heard Nick Paton Walsh restaura reports the deaths. How much would it matter if this plane was shot out of the sky or these pilots were shot as they were coming down or on the ground . I dont know because russian propaganda has gone into override painting turkey as the financier, the ally and the vetter of isis. If putin was to pursue a low level aerial warfare with turkey, its important to remember that turkey can do a lot of damage to russia. Not only along the border region with rebels answering to kwooutly, but also in krocrimea where you have people linked to turkey and could turkey play with them. Thats a possibility. Right now crimea has its electricity completely cut off proitsers in ukraine. The other Pressure Point is a russian occupied area of georgia where again, the ethnicity there is linked in to turkey and lots of possibilities for turkey to sort of play with things there. Turkey has the option to try to blockade the black sea through istanbul. Turkey chs held back from any kind of sanctions on russia during the war in ukraine. Thats beginni thats going to be different now, which is sounds like hes going to do. So if even some of those items happened, how would all of that Bigger Picture the war on isis. Could significant affect the war on isis. It would basically put any efforts to bring all of the different Coalition Players together with russia to go after isis. Isis is not russias main goal in syria. They want to preserve and to protect the reseem. Thats their primary goal. Thats why when they were flying over this area on the Turkish Border, none of the targets they were going after, the russians were going after had anything to do with isis. Those were all those groups that we have talked about. Colonel and ben, thank you both so much. Coming up next, donald trump making a new claim about what he says. Does the truth matter when it comes to the republican front runner. Well talk to him, one of our political reporters. Also well take you to chicago. This Police Officer has been charged with firstdegree murder. What just happened in court as that city is bracing for the release of the video. Woman my mom and i have the same hands. Same eyes. Same laugh. And since shes had moderate alzheimers disease, ive discovered we have the same fighting spirit, too. Thats why i asked her doctor about new onceaday namzaric™. Vo new namzaric is approved for moderate to severe alzheimers disease in patients who are currently taking, and can continue to take certain doses of both namenda and donepezil. New namzaric is the first and only treatment to combine 2 proven alzheimers medicines into a single onceaday capsule that works 2 ways to fight the symptoms of moderate to severe alzheimers disease. Onceaday namzaric may improve cognition and overall function and may slow the worsening of symptoms for a while. Namzaric does not change how the disease progresses. It shouldnt be taken by anyone allergic to memantine, donepezil, piperidine or any of the ingredients in namzaric. Before starting treatment, tell the doctor about any medical conditions they have. Including heart or lung problems, seizures, stomach ulcers, bladder, kidney, or liver problems. Tell the doctor if the patient will have any procedures involving anesthesia, which may cause muscle problems. Other serious side effects may occur, including slow heartbeat and fainting; increased stomach acid, which may raise the chance of ulcers and bleeding; nausea and vomiting; difficulty passing urine, seizures, and worsening of lung problems. The most common side effects associated with namzaric are headache, diarrhea, dizziness, loss of appetite, and bruising. Woman mom and i share a lot of moments. And were making the most of each one. Vo ask your doctor if new namzaric is right for your loved one. Its gotten squarer. Over the years. Brighter. Bigger. Thinner. Even curvier. But whats next . For all binge watchers. Movie geeks. Sports freaks. X1 from xfinity will change the way you experience tv. Moments ago a chicago Police Officer in a case that some say threatens to tear the city apart was charged with firstdegree murder. If you could would you take back what happened that night . Officer jason van dike turned himself in this morning. A judge denied him bond. He shot and killed a 17yearold firing 16 times. An autopsy shows some bullets entered the teens back. The teen, according to police, was wheeleding a a 4inch knife acting erratically and had slashed a patrol car tire. Protesters demonstrated in the wake of the killing, but leaders are worried about what could happen if the video of mcdonalds actual killing is made public, is is seen. The city under court order to release the dash cam footage by tomorrow. It has been called graphic. The officers attorney just spoke saying this should not be considered a murder case. Its certainly everyones right to make a judgment about it, but i would just state that the judgment made by individuals that have viewed this tape from the comfort of their living room and their sofa its not the same standard as the per spktispectim my client. Brian young is live outside a chicago courthouse. Tell us first what happened at that hearing. Lets break this down a little bit. Some people may be wondering why were not showing video from the courtroom. Cameras are not allowed inside Court Proceedings so were not able to record what was going on. The states attorney is upstairs doing a playbyplay of some of the information given in court. They are telling the public a breakdown of why its taking so long for this vud owe to be released. Honestly, what we have learned so far, though, is that officer van dike opened fire on mcdonald. E we learned that only two shots hit him while mcdonald was standing. The next few shots, the next 14 bullets hit him as he was on the ground. Other officers report to the States Attorney Office they didnt feel like mcdonald was a threat. His partner walked over after he was shot and kicked the knife out of his hand. Now you have jason who was in court charged with firstdegree murder and granted no bond. One of the things the judge wanted to see is he wanted to see the video. The Prosecutors
