Under enemy fire and used bolt cutters to free dozens of isis prisoners in a roof and left the building briefly and went back in to make sure no one was left behind and he is the first living Delta Force Member to receive the medal of honor. Well take you to that ceremony the second it begins. Today also marks exactly six months since the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global pandemic. And yet experts fear it is far from over. A new forecast from the cdc predicts that another 20,000 people could die from the virus in just the next three weeks. And now dr. Fauci is urging people to, quote, hunker down, saying the virus is going to worsen in the coming months while conceding things may not return to normal even with a vaccine until the end of next year. So when asked about President Trumps claim that the u. S. Had turned a corner on covid, dr. Fauci had a different view. Im sorry, but i have to disagree with that. Because if you look at the thing that you just mentioned, the statistics, andrea, they are disturbing. Were plateauing at around 40,000 cases a day. And the deaths are around a thousand. Now, lets go to Jeremy Diamond at the white house. And dr. Fauci didnt stop there, when you watch this interview, hes quite critical of the conversation between President Trump and bob woodward dating back to early february when the president admitted to intentionally downplaying the virus to the public. What did dr. Fauci say . Reporter well, brooke, i think we both remember time after time where the president would say one thing downplaying the seriousness of the threat of this coronavirus, while dr. Fauci and other Public Health experts were offering a very different message, trying to impart the seriousness of the situation to the american people. And that is exactly what dr. Fauci recounted in responding to this interview with bob woodward. Listen. Certainly there were disagreements as you know, there were times when i was out there telling the American Public how difficult this is, how were having a serious problem and the president was saying it is something that is going to disappear, which obviously is not the case. So there was and is some disagreements in what we say and what comes out from the white house. But, again, were trying to get the right thing done by getting right word out but i cant have any explanation for the conversations between the author of the book, bob woodward, and the president. So i cant comment any more on that except to say, yes, when you down play something, that is really a threat, that is not a good thing. Not a good thing. And weve known for months that the president downplayed the threat of coronavirus. What is new is the fact that the president is admitting in the on the record recording that he did intentionally downplay it and knew the seriousness as early as february. The president is continuing to do this. As you just mentioned in your intro there, the president last night at his rally was talking about the fact that were rounding the corner of this virus. The numbers are plummeting, when, in fact, were stagnating at about 35,000 more than 800 deaths per day and were getting these warnings now from dr. Fauci and other Public Health experts that we need to buckle up for a really rough fall and winter. Like he said, wont go back to normal until potentially the end of 2021. Dr. Fauci also expressed concern about mask use or lack thereof saying youre not protected just because youre not indoors. But that is what we keep seeing at trump rallies and cnn, i want to play and youve seen it, cnn caught up with some attendees at a trump rally who werent wearing face coverings and asked them why not. Here they were. Why are you not wearing a mask . Because there is no covid. It is a fake pandemic. Created to destroy the United States of america. Why . Because it doesnt do anything really. These little things. This is the worst pandemic in the world and little mask, a little mark, this protects you from the worlds deadliest and scariest virus, that ruined our economy and we have to wear this. Everyone who is here signed up and they understand they are taking a risk. Youre not worried about all of these people not Wearing Masks. Im not worried about it. Im more worried about the state of our country more than anything. Jeremy . Reporter and brooke, as you watch that sound, you just have to wonder what those vid views would be on mask wearing had the president early on in the pandemic said that Wearing Masks are important and a peat re ottic thing to do as he started to do much more recently. But the president still isnt wearing a mask very frequently in public and more notably his campaign is holding eefrnvents e thousands are gathering together as if this is an alternate universe why the pandemic does not exist and they are still not requiring attendees to wear masks. It is optional. Despite all of the warnings weve been getting since the get from the scientists. Jeremy, thank you very much for that. Meantime, the head of operation warp speed, that is the federal Government Vaccine Program is speaking out about the accelerated effort to development a vaccine by the end of the year. He talked to dr. Sanjay gupta but the process so far. So with me to talk about that is elizabeth cohen. What did he say to sanjay . He talked to sanjay about the timing of the vaccine which is so much discussion, is it being rushed, is it not being rushed. Lets take a listen to what he told sanjay. If we know a vaccine is 70 or 80 or 90 effective, it would be unethical to hold it back. I would frankly turn the question the other way around and say what would be my ethical reason to withhold a vaccine that i could have developed faster from being developed faster. So lets unpack what the doctor said at the end of that. You could look at it two ways. He could be saying why wont we cut red tape and get through this as quickly as we could in a safe and scientifically sound way, but cut through the red tape that you have usually in precovid times. Having spoken with the doctor before, he means the first, cutting red tape and manufacturing the vaccine while were studying and then if it doesnt work out you just dont use it. But, of course, there is such concern about this. Butly tell you, the folks who i have talked to are concerned, Infectious Disease experts, the data gathering by real scientists, but what their worried about if the data is done and it looks eh, there is pressure on the fda brass to give it the stamp approval, that the president will pressure the head of the fda to put a vaccine on the market that may not be so great. That is where the worry is. Understandable. Thank you so much for the update there. And the Coronavirus Task force over at the white house is placing a sharper focus on colleges and universities as campuses continue to grapple with worsening outbreaks. In the recommendations to states this week the task force pushed measures to prevent more outbreaks as the school year gets underway as there are more than 40,000 cases across College Campuses in all 50 states. You see all of the red on your screen. And controlling the rapidlyspreading virus is proving to be more difficult than some may have predicted. With me now and raw man from ucla Fielding School of Public Health. And i want to start with this article in the New York Times that pointed out that even the campuses with the best plans in place like the university of illinois massive testing program, they havent been able to overcome the behaviors of college students. So what can, what should the colleges do . Brooke, youre bringing up a really important problem. That it isnt just about the testing. It is t isnt just about the masking, it is not just about the social distancing or the hand hygiene, it is about all of these things together and it is very complicated. Kids at universities are way from home for the first time and under the best of circumstances, it is hard to get people to follow the rules and we were all in college or that were at a certain point remember that what it is like to be at that age and really trying to figure how to follow these rules. You have kids that are going to be in close quarters. Theyre going to be in the exact ideal conditions that spread the virus. The good news is that there is testing going on, were identifying a lot of the outbreaks but dr. Fauci brought this up, weve had numerous people bring this up, the problem is that nothing happens in a vacuum and these kids having these outbreaks means that when they go home, theyre going to spread it to parents who are in their 50s or 60s or multigenerational households, up to 70s, 80s and 90s and other people that are vulnerable and that goes with the staff and the faculty who are already exposed. So it is a huge problem. And it is not a problem that was not foreseeable. We all knew that kids going back into school would create a situation where we could see very large numbers occur. Were not just rounding the corner, right. That is what dr. Fauci said in his way and disputing what the president has been saying. On this notion about everyone is wondering, myself included, when are we going back to air quotes normal. Dr. Fauci today reitierated tha he believed well have a vaccine this year or next. But he said by the time you mobilize the distribution of the vaccine and you get the majority or more of the population vaccinated or protected that window happenal the mid or end offer 2021. If you talk about getting back to normality prior to covid, it is well into 2021 maybe toward the end of 2021. Does that sound about right to you . Dr. Fauci is very wise and i think hes being very realistic. And think that is the problem here, is that we spend a lot of time looking for magic bullets that are going to save us but they dont have those. They dont exist. Ive spent my career working on immunization and Infectious Diseases and dealing with vaccines out to populations under the best of circumstances it is difficult and here we are combatting politics, were combatting vaccine hesitancy, were going to be combatting so many things. So it is not realistic to think even if we find that a vaccine is useful, effective, safe, that wed be able to get it to the public in enough time and with both doses, this is a vaccine that is likely going to be two doses, it is going to take time. So this goes back to what do we have to do . We have to deal with the blunt measures which have been very effective in other places. Wearing a mask, hand hygiene and social distancing. So we all need to, again, speaking to myself as well, slow our roll. We are not going to be normal for a little while. Ann, thank you for your perspective. The wildfire crisis in the western United States is deepening by the hour with the total ache rang burn sod far as large as the state of new jersey. In california alone more than a dozen fires are raging, some turning deadly and some leveling entire towns and forces thousands to evacuate homes. The latest to explode overnight is this bobcat fire in the angel he is National Forest doubling in size with more than 23,000 acres uncontained. Meanwhile, portland, oregon, under a state of emergency, after the largest city burned. Camina burnal is on the ground for us in oregon. And so camilla, coy see the spoke behind you around that bend. Tell me what youve been seeing an the stories youve been hearing. Reporter yeah, brooke, the smoke is so thick that it is hard to see, your eyes get irritated and it is hard to breathe but it does not compare to what people are feeling. Seeing the flames getting closer and closer to their homes. And i want to first show you what were seeing here. This is one of the roads that weve been going up and down. Yesterday when we went in we saw the flames getting cle ve close to the homes. Some structures were oin fire when we went in yesterday. We had to come back out of the area. Today it is a permanent cloud of smoke that is difficult to see. But of course firefighters continue to be in this area and the people here have been told to leave, to evacuate. It is a total of half a Million People in the state that have been told to leave their homes. Let that number sink in. That is more than 10 of the population in oregon that have left homes and dont know if theyre coming back or when theyre coming back an the situation gets even harder and more heartbreaking when you hear of stories like the one of wyatt tofty and his family. This is a 13yearold boy who were told was found inside of a car with his dog on his lap. They believe that he went into the car looking for shelter. That car went up in flames. His mother is at the hospital right now in Critical Condition being treated for severe burns. His grandma unfortunately also passing away. That is why the governor here is telling people, you may not get a second chance. And it is why shes telling people, get out of these areas. Because right now the fire is at zero percent containment. This means it is out of control and this is going to be days, maybe even weeks before people could return to their homes. They believe the death toll will probably go up because the flames are so uncontrollable at the moment. So it is a long road ahead for these families and for the firefighters, brooke. Feeling for the families and as you point out, importantly the firefighters as well, racing toward the flames. Thank you. Great job out there. And i want to pause on this and go to the white house as we see the president here about to award the medal of honor. Join me in welcoming todays recipient, Sergeant MajorThomas Patrick payne.
