Cry of the campaign. We are going to build a great bo border wall. We will build a great, great wall. We will build a wall. Dont worry about it. We are building it. I promise that we will build the wall. And who is going to pay for the wall . Mexico. This new Shutdown Threat happening as the governments deadline to separate united families with their children has come and gone and more than 700 children have not been reunited and Boris Sanchez is joining us live from new jersey near where the president is spending the weekend on his golf resort there in bedminster and tell us more about trumps Point Of View and strategy here. Hey, there, fred. Some say that the time is a flat circle, and we are right back to where we were a few months ago and really starting a year ago around september when congress had to begin passing the continuing resolutions, because they could not agree on the budget. The government was shutdown for a brief period earlier in the year, and almost took a second before they found something that he would sign. When he signed the Funding Agreement from the government, he complained about the funding for border wall, and it appears that he is ready to do the whole thing again. On twitter he wrote, i would be willing to shutdown the government if the democrats do not give us the votes for the Border Security which includes the wall. The president going a step further calling on kocongress t say that they must act on fixing the dumbest and the worst Immigration Laws anywhere in the world. This is a separate tweet, and he says vote r, and r is of course for republican. And the president is trying to make immigration an issue in the midterm elections, but not all of the republicans are on board with this threat to shutdown the government. I listened to ron johnson a so where we are to dday is best encapsulated by the story of the woman we will call alejandra who came to the u. S. And crossed the border a month and half ago with her 6yearold daughter and fleeing Gang Violence in honduras. They were detained, separated. Ten days ago, alejandra was told that she would be reunited with her daughter that day and given the paperwork for her release, but it did not happen. She is still in the Detention Facility here in texas, and her daughter is in a facility in new york. When she is going to look for answers, this is what she is told. Translator the first thing they ask is always, do you know when it will be . When my girl will be brought here to be unified with me, and they tell me, no, i dont know anything. They say to me. Reporter through this 10day period of olimbo that alejandra has been in, she has been told by her daughters attorney that hss has raised a red flag in her daughters case holding up the process, and hss is telling cnn that they will not comment on the specific cases, because spokesperson said that people in i. C. E. Custody have concerns of safety or parentage, and the office of settlement is going to be continuing to work on a casebycase basis and will continue to put the Children First in the proprocess. As i said, no two stories are the same for the families and ti timing is everything. Yesterday, i met another mother and daughter here in mcallen and they had crossed the border and spent a month fleeing el s el salvador getting here, and when they crossed the border, they were detained briefly and never separated. They were getting on a bus to go to indianapolis to meet up with Family Members there, and there they are going to await together the first court date. Fred, the confusion continues through this story as it has for months now, and many still looking for the answers and finding them very difficult to get. Kaylee hartung, thank you so much in mcallen, texas. Lets talk about the politics of what is happening on the border, and i am joined by julian zelitser, and so when people started to learn about this there was a outrage and then a lull. One has to be wondering how this is going to be overlooked and how this circumstance could benefit President Trump or anyone who has been okay with this. Yeah, i mean, initially, there was with a really big backlash and a moeshl mobilization to do something and the energy fade and the problem is the still there, and really a tragic moment for the country. This is not good politically obviously for republicans, and that is why many republicans are uneasy hearing this story come back with this tweet which will remind us of the situation and many children still. Yes, i want to bring in cnn political commentator Peter Bin Heart binehart, and the president threatening a Government Shutdown if he does not get the wall. And speaker ryan saying that the president needs to be patient. We walked the president through the strategy of appropriations for the fiscal can year, and he agreed with the strategy, so we believe that we have a unified strategy to get as many Appropriations Bills done as possible. As far as the wall is going, we have some wall funding under way that is being funded, but it is not a question of the, but it is a question of when, and in the the president willing to be patient that we get what we need so that we can get that done. So a couple of things. Is this patience, and then why is it okay that there might be funding for this when the president on the Campaign Trail was saying that the u. S. Taxpayers will never pay for this . Is congress saying it is okay now . I mean, it is almost hard to keep up with these things. First of all, i dont think that anybody believed the president s threats any more. And one thing about the threats, it is not a good idea to make them unless you are willing to the back them up, and what we have seen with him domestically and internationally is that he is going to be making the threats and then he does not remember that he made them so the threats dont have credibility, and secondly, how politically effective to shutdown the government when the republicans are controlling every branch of the federal government, and that is not seeming like a great strategy going into the midterm election, and just on the policies, also, remember that almost nobody who studies immigration thinks that a wall would actually anything anyway, and so there is virtually no immigration coming from mexico anyway, and most of the people coming from Central America are seeking asylum which they have the right to do and whether we have a wall or not. So, julian, how do you see this the . Is it the president who is looking or thinking about making these moves while thinking about the midterms or is he making the moves because he is thinking about what he promised on the Campaign Trail and delivering on that and then perhaps the message of odelivering on that might benefit everyone who is running. I think that part of it is a miscalculation on his part that he going to be able to excite the base through these kinds of issues, and therefore match the enthu enthusiasm that is going to be with a lot of democrats going into november. That is miscalculation with these issues, and the second is that the president is not that committed to the republican party. He is thinking of 2020 and he is thinking of what is going to benefit him and this very well might, but it could be different than what is going to be happening in november, and that is why the republicans, you know, defending over 40 seats might find themselves in a bind. And so, peter sh, the party seems committed to him, the president. Yes. Donald trump is exceptionally popular among the republicans, and that is, you know, one of the big political strengths, and the problem that the Lp Republicans have is that a lot of the key seats defending in places like california, new york, new jersey are not solidly Republican Trump seats. They are seats where people have a lot of ambivalence and even hostility for donald trump, and so for those embattled members of congress, this kind of the focus by donald trump on the kind of the rearing up the base m may not be so valuable for them. Peter beinart and julian z t zeltin, thank you. And why this issue may come down to decorum next. Making cars lighter, its a good place to start, advanced oils for those hardworking parts. At crowne plaza, we know Business Travel isnt just business. Theres this. A bit of this. Why not . Your hotel should make it easy to do all the things you do. Which is what we do. Crowne plaza. Were all business, mostly. All right. Welcome back. President trump revealed in a tweet today what was supposed to have been an off of the record meeting with a New York Times publisher earlier in the month saying that quote, had a very good and interesting meeting at the white house with a. G. Sultzburger at the white house and spent a lot of time talking about the fake news getting out to the media and how it has morph morphed into the enemy of the people. Sad. That tweet prompted sulzberg er to say in part, the main purpose to accept the meeting was to talk about the president s troubling antipress rhetoric and i told him that i thought that his language was not just divisive, but increasingly da dangerous, and although the phrase fake news is untrue and harmful, i am far more concern canned about his labeling journalists the enemy of the people. I warned that this inflammatory how he is upset from the negative coverage from the failing New York Times and the washington post, and calling the reports on the internal government pages unpatriotic, and that is stunning to hear from the american president. What is more stunning is that we have become seemingly so president calling the normal course of reporting somehow unpatriotic, because as we know that without the reporters we would not know everything from the Watergate Scandal to Hillary Clintons private email server, but that is what the president uses when he needs a booster from the base. And the press is an extension of the american people, and that kind of ooaccess to the president and reporting is all about transparency, but what is interesting from the tweet of the president it is like he is taking the approach of getting the upper hand and letting people know that i gave the New York Times the what for, but maybe he did not expect that salzberger would come back to a say, this is a more specific tick tock of the conversation and i helped convey how dangerous this kind of the antipress rhetoric is. So this week, you know, just an extension of what the president has kind of threatened for a long time and not really liking the press, the white house banned cnn reporter Kaitlan Collins who was representing all of the networks as a Pool Reporter when she asked questions, and then later the white house telling her that she would not be a part of the rose garden event. The white house said it was in retaliation, you know, but the same time this is very problematic, because the press as a whole has corralled around by saying this is not good. So take a listen to this exchange Involving Maria Bart Romo earlier. I dont know this as a fact, but it probably came from the president. He likes to be respected and he was probably frustratedt that moment, but what i would do in a situation like that is to pull the tape of questions that Sam Donaldson screamed at Ronald Reagan and go right through the last 30 years of the Pool Reporters asking can questions that president s think are obnoxious or untorrid or disrespectful questions and point out that she was doing the job. This administration believes in the freedom of the press. President trump and our entire administration have provided exra troord their access extraordinary access, and the president answers so many questions in so many settings, and i assure you that we will continue to do that, but maintaining the decorum that is due at the white house is an issue that will continue to work for, but i am confident that whether it be with that network or any network or any members of the media that he that we will work in the way that the ensures the access of the american people. And on this day, she was the pool report, and actually representing all of us, and did you feel like kicking her out kicked out everybody . I would leave that decision to the white house staff and i just remain very confident. So is there a way to kind of gauge the consensus here about whether, you know, people are accepting how the white house handled this involving the reporter . No, the broad consensus is that it is a retaliatory move against cnn and kaitlan, because cnn is doing the job in reporting the news and sometimes it is negative for the president , and sometimes it is positive, but ultimately we report the news as we see it, and any reporter in Washington Is G is going to tell you that kaitlans questions which were caught on video were totally normal for the type of the Pool Spray Situation they were in. She was not shouting obscenities or shouting necessarily over anybody else, and asking questions about news of the day, and any Pool Reporter would have done that in the situation. And that had been tweeted out, and so it was an opportunity for the followup. And the president answers these questions often in the Pool Spray Situations f. He wanted to wean the press off of the questions and shouting at him when he is in the oval office with leaders he should stop answering the questions, but when he answers them, they will keep to asking them, because that is our job to ask the questions and get the answer and report the news. They include a woman and her two great grandchildren who perished when the Flames En Ggulfed the womans home. The blaze has burned nearly 90,000 acres and just 5 contained. Cnns dan simon is joining us from redding. When do the firefighters believe they might get the upper hand here . Well, the conditions remain challenging, fred. If you want the look for the silver lining, we can tell you that the fire did not grow s significantly laos night. We are not seeing the explosive growth that we saw a couple of days ago and grew by 6,000 acres last night. That said, this fire remains very dangerous, and still very hot outside, and then tonight, we are expecting more windy conditions. Now, fred, every now and again, i want to point something out to you that every now and again, we see something that defies logic for the imagination, and in this case, look at the very long piece of metal that came from the pickup truck. We believe it was a wheel that just melted down. That is going to give you an indication of just how hot this fire was. In the meantime, again, it is very, very hot outside, and 110 degrees it is expected to the reach. And you can see what the neighborhood looks like this. Is Lake Redding Estates and one of the neighborhoods leveled. In addition to this, fred, you are talking about the number of people missing and that number is standing at 12, and that does not mean that of course these folks are presumed dead, but may
