Theres been a general trend upward of new cases and i want you to look at the bar graph. Just yesterday. These are the latest figures that we have. 2,519, a new daily high and also concerning physicians in this case and especially e. R. Doctors. The number of acute beds that are are being used. Approximately 85 of acute beds and icu beds currently in use. I want you to listen to what an e. R. Doctor told us what it was like inside the hospital. Sorry about that. He was one of 3,000 doctors who signed a petitional letter to the governor asking that there be a statewide mandate for masks. Thats something that the governor says he simply will not do and that he has pushed that decision, poppy, to local mayors and, of course, when you talk to physicians about this, they see this as a piece meal approach, something that would be much more effective, a statewide mandate, something similar to what we just saw in california. Poppy. Kyung, thanks very much. Coronavirus cases are spiking also in oklahoma. This is key also because tomorrow, as many as 20,000 people will pack together inside an arena for the president s rally. Our Martin Savidge joins us in tulsa. The Health Departments director there is really concerned about this. Reporter he has been spreading the word actually for over a week now that this city has become a spike, and a as a result he tried to get the whole event, the trump rally delayed, but apparently that fell on deaf ears. Take a look behind me. These are the supporters that began lining up last week, actually saturday, so they really want to get inside that arena. When you talk to them and say are you concerned about the Health Concerns of coronavirus and all of you being in there, 20,000 strong . No. They believe that the risks are no greater than just being out on the street in their daily lives, so they arent planning to wear face masks or take any kind of health precautions. Security measures meanwhile have been set up in this city. Also a curfew that goes into effect tonight and tomorrow. Whats interesting is political officials have been stressing now in the last 24 hours not the record numbers of coronavirus cases but this concern that theres going to be some kind of violence. Even the mayor was putting out information saying that they have some kind of intel that there are groups planning to come to this city and try to disrupt and do harm. Boarding up has begun at a number of businesses inside the security perimeter which theres going to be National Guard and a ton of police, not to mention secret service. So what im saying is that theres a pitt a bit of a distraction going on saying that this is a seer crouse pandemic, 20,000 people inside that arena, shouting, jeering, jostling, being together, and thats the perfect recipe to spread coronavirus which is in this community and will be brought in additionally from those coming from far away. There are truly new concerns. New numbers are coming out at 11 00 local time today so well find out what has happened in the last 24 hours. They were delayed by five hours yesterday which is interesting because there was a meeting of the governor of oklahoma with the president yesterday. Those record numbers didnt come out while that meeting was going on, but as soon is a the meeting was over, what do you know, they suddenly appeared. Martin, all of that is just very concerning for the health of the people in tulsa. I wonder, also, too, what the president s plans are, if you know, to really address what happened there 99 years ago. Today is juneteenth. Thats why he moved the rally he says to tomorrow, but is he going to in depth address the events of greenwood and the massacre . Reporter theres been kind of a back and forth in the community on that. The there were supposedly reports that the president planned to visit the neighborhood where the violence occurred 99 years ago, but we have been told yesterday, no, thats actually been cancelled. Now that may be in part because the community itself was not keen on having the president appear. I dont know the specifics on that and well only really know what happens when the president actually arrives here, but definitely thats on the minds of people, and the problem is there are now a lot of counterprotesters coming out angry at the protester over the handling of juneteenth, so more people are being brought into the mix over the friction at the absolute worst time due to the pandemic. Thanks for your reporting in tulsa this morning. Lets talk about the covid pandemic and where we are with our chief medical correspondent dr. Sgupt, a. Good morning, sanjay. Good morning, poppy. Florida, huge, sharp uptick, not only i hospitalizations. New projections suggesting it could be the next epicenter of the virus. The state was not hit as hard as new york back in march and april. What is happening in florida now and why . Reporter well, one thing to keep and remember is that the early states that were hit were typically coastal city states that had Big International airports. Thats where we know the virus was coming in so it wasnt surprising that we saw seattle, that we saw cities in california, that we saw new york get hit earlier with this virus. Weve been keeping an eye on florida throughout because of the concern of lots of travel back an for the and i think theres sort of three things driving whats happening in florida. One is they closed late. We know that they opened early, far earlier than the criteria suggested they should have opened, and in most cases theres no sort of mandatory masks and a lot will have people arent Wearing Masks in areas in florida so all these basic things make a huge difference. I mean, theres no other magic thing here, poppy, a medicine that they had in new york that they didnt have in florida, a vaccine or anything like that. I think one of the biggest things when we talk about flattening the curve is not just the number of people who are diagnosed with the infection but obviously people who get sick. My parents live in florida, poppy. I mean, this has been a conversation topic for the last several months. A lot more Vulnerable People live in florida. Because of age, people go there to retire and people have preexisting conditions so thats why, you know, you see 75 of the icu beds already at capacity now, and this is sort of in a more plateau phase, so when they talk about this being the next epicenter its not just the number of cases, its the toll on the Hospital System that they are worried about. Sure. And looking at oklahoma, they are seeing the biggest single day increase yesterday in the rally with the president in 20,000plus people in this arena and no mandated masks tomorrow, i wonder if that risk is not only great to the people of tulsa but, you know, more broadly across the nation because things are more open now. People are traveling more. Its the summer. They are driving from state to state. Theres just a lot more contact. Yeah. Theres no question that these numbers that were seeing, this plateau in the cases which is some 20,000 to 25,000 people being infected every day, several hundred up to a thousand people dying every day, has sort of become the floor at which, you know, were for whatever reason in this country become comfortable with because we know the numbers are going to go up as things start to reopen. I think what has struck me, pope, and i spent a lot of time thinking about this. Yeah. How do you quantify this risk to people . So take this rall re, this situation of 20,000 people. How many people are like i had to show up at the rally already carrying the infection, and we can show many so of the numbers here, and if you look at the calculations, we calculate some 100 people already will already be infected when they show up, not people that get infected, but they are already infected. Of those we know that there are about 20 people who are likely to be significantly shedding the virus. Thats typically how it works. These are the quote, unquote, superspreaders. Find 20 of the people are usually responsible for 80 of the infections so 20 of people in an environment like that, 20 people, could potentially infect 40 to 50 people each, indoors, masks arent required as you mentioned. Lots of shouting and lots of dispersion of the virus into the environment. Do the math, 800 to 1,000 new infections now and to your point, poppy, where do they go . They go home and to their communities and they start to spread, and what im describing here is the anatomy of a potential outbreak. Thats how these things could potentially happen, and i think its just important because otherwise it becomes a nebulous sort of thing. Thats more riskier than this. Here you can see how Public Health officials, dynamic experts in Infectious Diseases actually think about a problem like this. Yeah, absolutely. Sanjay, thank you so much. We appreciate it. Have a nice weekend. Thank you, you, too. The former Atlanta Police officer charged in the death of Rayshard Brooks was going to appear in court today. Cnn has learned hes waived his right to appear. Garrett rolfe is facing 11 charges, including felony murder in the Fatal Shooting of brooks one week ago. Lets go to our Diane Gallagher for more this morning. Do we know why he waived that right . I know his lawyers will be there. Reporter yeah, his lawyers are going to be here. Poppy, this has kind of gone back and forth. Last night we received an email both from the court and from his representation saying that he was going to appear, and then this morning we went inside and checked. The chief Magistrate Court justices office told us hes now no longer going to appear nor via zoom as many of these defendants are going to, but his representation is going to be here at this first appearance. Were not sure why that is, but they have made this decision. It sounds like this morning. Hes facing those 11 counts including the felony murder charge. The District Attorney says even though it carries a penalty up to the Death Penalty thats not something he was going to seek. He was move last night from the Fulton County jail to another metro location, sources tell us, for security purposes, so high profile and a lot of interest here. Starting around noon we should find out more. Thank you, diane. Meantime, senator Amy Klobuchar overnight removing herself from contention to be joe bidens running mate saying he hopes she chooses a woman of color. This is a historic moment, and america must seize on this moment, and i truly believe, as i actually told the Vice President last night when i called him, that i think this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket, and there are so many incredibly qualified women. M. J. Lee is with us now. Were you surprised that she did that . What do you make of it . Reporter well, you know, poppy, it wasnt that long ago that Amy Klobuchar was seen as somebody who had a pretty good shot as being chosen as bidens vp. You know, theres that personal relationship and also dont forgot it was a big deal when klobuchar ended her own 2020 campaign back in march. She immediately sort of endorsed biden and gave him a political momentum at a moment when he really needed it. What has changed in recent weeks is thisnationalreckoning over race and the conversations that have happened as you have been talking about, and as a part of that what has happened is that klobuchar herself has gotten a lot of scrutiny over her own criminal justice record, particularly her role as a top prosecutor in minnesota, and was she tough enough on some of these Police Officers who were involved in shootings . Now what were told is that the senator made her decision on wednesday after talking to some staff and family and that there was zero pressure from the Biden Campaign for her to take herself out of the running. Now poppy just stepping back a little, all of this is just, you know, one more data point on the growing pressure that biden is getting to choose a woman of color. He, of course, already has said his running mate is going to be a woman, but we dont know who that is going to be, and, of course, as far as the timing goes he has said that he hopes to make the decision by around august 1st. Poppy . Okay. M. J. Lee, thank you for that reporting. Today is juneteenth, the day long recognized and celebrated marking the end of slavery in the United States. Take a look at these live pictures out of atlanta. We have them in a moment for you. The president moved his own rally set for today. Hes moving it to tomorrow in tulsa, a city with quite a history of racism and racial violence. Im glad to be joined now by Oklahoma State representative regina goodman. Good morning, thank you so much for the time. Good morning, thank you. I hope people know at this point what happened in greenwood 99 years ago, but if they dont, lets refresh their memory in terms of the 300 plus lives taken in that massacre, 35 city blocks burned to the ground and more than 10,000 africanamericans left homeless and more than 2,000 businesses destroyed. Your great grandfather survived the massacre, and no one was held accountable for all of it. What are your thoughts this morning . My thoughts is justice has not been delivered. Our minds today are on juneteenth. We honor the legacy of our ansetters and weve got to keep on keeping on. Well continue to stay focused and we wont be distracted by the divisiveness and racism and the foolishness of double talk. Well keep on keeping on. We know we have a strong lineage here and tulsa is a very special place and we intend to keep it so. Weve got a long way to go and we wont be distracted. For you, not only your great grandfather surviving that massacre, you have faced systemic racism, faced profiling, had a gun placed in your face by Police Officers on three different occasions. What do you hope to hear from the president on the issue of race tomorrow . Well, what we hope to hear from the people, the people that live in america day in and day out is the truth. You know, we need truthtellers and truth listeners so we rely on facts from folks on the ground, boots on the ground, and weve got strong relationships here as it relates to how do we move along, so our focus quite frankly as it relates to race is, again, im not going to go to an a arsonist to put out a fire, so were going to stay focused, poppy. But what do you do then . I mean, are there parts, for example, the republican senates proposal on the justice act its called on Police Reform led by senator tim scott that make you hopeful . Like do you think were going to see compromise on this like was accomplished with criminal Justice Reform . Well, what i can say is we know thats going to be a tough battle when it has to go over to it the senate with Mitch Mcconnell but also what we can do, poppy, we certainly its a step forward. The fact that we are having the conversation here in tulsa quite frankly. Ive authored three bills as it relates to excessive crime and hate crimes and body cams and none of them were heard in the house here in oklahoma. All politics are local. We appreciate the initial attempt at the federal level so the conversation around the world is where it should be, and, again, you know, weeksy, exactly when it happens when it gets to the senate side. I know theres a pretty big gap there, but what can we do here in tulsa, oklahoma is really important, and i tell you what. Weve got good folks here that have been putting forth good measures. Weve just got to get the right horse to push it forward. Representative regina goodman, thank you for joining us on such an important day. I appreciate your perspective. Poppy, i want to thank you, and were going to stay focussed. Were not going to be distracted again, and we thank you. Were going to carry on. Weve got a rich legacy here. Thank you. Of course. Thanks. The president now says that he is fighting the Supreme Court decision to allow daca to stand. What does that actually mean . Well go to the white house. The president says his administration will try to end protections for daca recipients, after his efforts to do so were blocked yesterday by the Supreme Court. They ruled the administration didnt do it the right way, did not provide an adequate reason to end the obamaera program. Lets go to the white house. John harwood is there. So the president says nothing won here, nothing lost. We just have to do it over. Is that accurate . Reporter well, it is accurate. Of course, its a complete shift from what he said yesterday. Yesterday the president railed against the Supreme Court said they must not like me in the wake of both the decision on job discrimination against gays that went against him earlier in the week and the daca decision. He suggested that we need new justices on the court even though hes appointed two justices in that conservative majority. I think what happened the president figured out that if youre raging if youre a conservative president raging against a conservative court that you helped to build, it makes you look impotent, so today what hes saying instead is, well, they actually didnt rule against me. They invited me to do it properly. That is true, and in a legal matter that is true, and now i will try to do it properly again. Its a complete shift from the president s tone. Sure. All right. The former National Security adviser whom the president chose as well john bolton is asking a federal judge to throw out the lawsuit that the Justice Department has brought forward thats trying to halt his book. I mean, the book comes out monday, right, john . Well, the books already out for practical purposes. Right. Its been reviewed. Its contents have been aired. This is really about really john bolton gets to keep the money, the 2 million that hes gotten from this book. Courts look askance at prior restraints so its not likely that the president s side will prevail. John boltons side will most likely prevail. John bolton has joined other senior officials, john mattis, jim kelly that worked in top jobs, joined republican opponents from 2016, joined Hillary Clinton in affirming their common judgment that the president of the United States is dishonest, amoral, unfit for office, and ive got to say that the president affirmed that judgment last night by sending out a tweet that took a heartwarming video of two toddlers on a street in new york, black and white, greeting and embracing one another and digitally altered it to make it look like it had been the subject of a cnn report about fake racism. It was a grotesque fabrication, so much so that twitter labeled it manipulated media, and so the president by his conduct is affirming the underlying message of john bolton and various other officials who have called out his character. Yeah. John harwood, thank you for that reporting. On the same week that the president says coronavirus is, quote, dying out, those are his words, florida is running out of icu beds. Lets talk about florida because in that state less than 25 of their icu beds are currently available. This comes as the state recorded its highest single day jump in coronavirus cases just yesterday. New models suggest florida was, quote, all the markings to be the next epicenter of this pandemic, but that is not stopping the state from reopening. I dont think we can scale back how we open, but we can simply move how we move forward. Palm beach county mayor kerner joins me now to discuss. Thanks for being here. Lets begin with the state of florida and if you agree with the analysis out of the university of pennsylvania this week that says it is florida that has all the markings of being the next large epicenter of coronavirus transmission and that it could be worse than ever. Do you share that concern . Reporter well, its hard for me as a lay person and county person to understand what those markings are. I havent operated in a pandemic environment before, but certainly there are red flags and concerns that we have here locally with regard to the Community Spread of this virus. The request from your team to the governor was to allow you to move into a phase two. I understand that its a very scaled down phase two, but it would still mean more businesses are open. There can be more humantohuman interaction. Well 344 new cases just yesterday, what tells you now is the time for that . Well, theres a couple of different metrix we look at here, and im seated right now at the Emergency Operations center here in Palm Beach County which is where weve been operating out of for the last 90 days. For us you mentioned that there was a 25 capacity in icus statewide. I cant comment on the statewide portion but here in Palm Beach County we have plenty of icu space and ventilator space. Those metrix havent moved that much because the median age has gone down in terms of Community Spread. But, again, there are things that need to be considered. I heard my colleague mel can a mckinley saying its hard to retract the economy, but certainly moving into phase two in the very narrow sense that weve asked is something that gives me concern. Heres why i ask you about palm beach. Maybe your numbers are more updated and please tell us but they are, but our reporting is that floridas agency for Health Care Administration says that Palm Beach County is running out of icu beds. Overall 74 of your 319 icu beds are occupied and at some specific hospital, Palm Beach Gardens medical center, palm west and wellington very much fewer or no icu beds. Is that it not case the . Im sure that is the case and what the ceos of the various hospitals have tried to accomplish is making sure that the majority of covidinfected patients in the icu remain in certain hospitals and that way its easier to treat the traumatic patients that are involved in car crashes and things of that nature in other hospitals, but granted, i mean, ill be the first to admit there are concerning trends with regards to icu space and certainly our cases have gone up day over day in a very large amount. So because of these concerning trends that have been seen in many states across the country, california yesterday implemented mandatory maskwearing for almost everywhere, outside and inside, very few exceptions. Are you a supporter of that . Should florida do the same . I am a supporter of that. I think the board is going to convene on the 25th to make that decision. Its not a decision that i get to make on my own, and i think when we do convene well probably end up from a policy perspective mandating masks. Weve purchased 6. 5 Million Masks here locally to subsidize and push out into the community through our ask for the mask program and were starting to transition to a more comprehensive enforcement, education and compliance perspective because we can move into whatever phase we want or not. If theres not compliance with the governors order then thats really the catalyst for Community Spread so were starting to focus on that. Mayor, thank you for your time. I know you guys have a lot on your plate right now. Thank you, poppy. Have a good weekend. Watch this. Hes known for feeding people when disaster strike. Im here reporting from look at all the people waitinging. Reporter now celebrity chef jose andreas is feeding people affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Andreas and his nonprofit world central kitchen have started a program to feed vulnerable communities across the country. We are in elderly homes. Were distributing food through uber and lyft, home by home when elderly people cannot leave home and they are too ill or too scared to go out. Reporter andreas is providing those meals by partnering with restaurants that really need the business. Weve been able to put more than 500 restaurants up and running because we get the mission where well pay per meal, and every one of those restaurants that are part of that community, they take care of whatever the needs are. Reporter the micheline star chef popularized tapas in the u. S. And owned more than 30 restaurants across the country. Youve had to shut many of your restaurants and furlough the vast majority of your employees, so what has that experience been like for you . For me i look to pay everybody salary and benefits. Right now as President Trump prepares for his tulsa rally, america is confronting its racist past and present, including what is believed to be the single worst incident of racial violence in american history, tulsas 1921 massacre where white mobs attacked black residents in the greenwood district. As much as 300 people died. 35 city blocks were burned to the ground. More than 10,000 black americans left homeless. More than 2,000 businesses destroyed and no one was held accountable. With me now to mark the significance and importance of this, reverend Joey Crutcher. His grandmother survived the massacre in tulsa and his brother Terence Crutcher was shot and killed by a Police Officer in 2016 and also with me is pastor vernon, pastor of the ame church, one of the only structures left standing after the masser can. Gentlemen, thank you so much for being with me today. Reverend turner, let me begin with you because your church, a sanctuary that was rebuilt by survivors of the massacre sits atop the only structure Still Standing since 1921 and what happened that day, but you wrote something recently that struck me. You said the white mob really won because they took it out of the hands of black people. They took greenwood out of the hands of black people. What do you want to hear from the president tomorrow . I would like for the president of these United States to actually do more than just give a speech. I would like for him to treat africanamericans, especially those here in tulsa, as true citizens of this nation and especially those who were killed in the race massacre. I would like for the president to instruct his attorney general to start investigating into the race massacre of 192 i1. I would like the president to instruct his cabinet to look into starting reparations initiatives for those descendants and the few survivors that we have lived. I would like for the president of these the United States to truly say simple words, black lives matter, and not just to say it but to actually do something about it. Reverend crutcher, what are your thoughts as, you know, the president comes to tulsa . I question his reasons for choosing tulsa. Oklahoma is a red state, and a the last time the state had a democratic president was in 1964 when Lyndon Johnson won nona landslide victory over his opponent. I just feel that i mean, whats the reason for coming . I think its just donald trump being donald trump. Donald trump hasnt shown any compassion or sympathy for the black lives that have been lost during these recent police shootings. Well, speaking of the shooting, and i obviously mentioned it at the top, but it was four years ago, september 16, 2016 that your son Terence Crutcher, we can show everyone a picture of him to honor his life, was shot and killed by a white Police Officer who was ultimately found not guilty. Talk to us about your son, reverend and also what you think he would make of this moment in america and the outcry in the streets of america right now. Terrence was a very compassionate young man and loved everyone. He would even go out on the streets and cooked meals. He loved to cook. He loved to cook meals and give to the homeless. I think terrence would be very outraged at whats happening now in the United States and especially whats happening here in tulsa. Im very, very sorry. Reverend turner, one of the ensuing tragedies of what happened in greenwood was that the history was erased for so long that it was not taught in schools, that many people who were growing up were younger and didnt even know what happened in their own streets. As you think about this moment where we are in the country and the importance of teaching people what has really happened, how does that all sit with you . It doesnt sit well at all because it is, again, another example of how the history of black people is not important, and it shows in our educational curriculum that most americans found out about this for the first time on 60 minutes. It shows a great tragedy that a crime, the worst race massacre in american history, the first time airplanes were used to terrorize americans happened right here, and most americans know nothing about it. We all know about 9 11 and pearl harbor but hardly anyone knew what happened here in tulsa, and its sickening to be in a country and a society where we have a president that brags about him bringing attention to something that nobody knew about it. I want to correct the president on that. Black people knew about it, and black people are somebody. We are somebody and we matter, whether he believes it or not. Well, its a remarkable piece of reporting. I encourage everyone to watch it, and im glad that they are investigating and looking now into where these mass grave sites may be for all of those lives that were lost as a result. Reverend crutcher, a common refrain among some black activists is im tired. They are tired of seeing their brothers and sisters and children killed on the streets of america. They are tired of very little to no change happening. You know, your son is on a list of so many killed at the hands of police. What is your message to those in your church and your community who who are exhausted by all of this and who may not have much hope that this time will be different . Yeah. Well, we see all across america, all of the protests that are happening concerning blacks being killed by police. Ill tell you, until it happened to you, you dont know the feelings that we have. I mean, i heard every day has been coming up on four years and each day brings back the memory and the killing of floyd just brought the back the memory of my found when i got the message that terrence was shot and killed by a Police Officer, its one of the most hurting things that ive ever had happen to me. Yeah, of course. I thank you both for being here on such an important day. I really do. Thank you, reverend Joey Crutcher and thank you reverend robert turner. Well be back right. As parts of the country begin to reopening, masks are playing a key role in helping communities emerge from lockdown. In many cases everyday folks are using their skills to sew masks that so many of us are really starting this week and grateful friends and neighbors who want to say thank you. Good job, youre doing a good job, a good job i want to send oodles of gratitude to the army of Home Economics teachers everywhere. Reporter youllian took pieces of her quilts and designed and handmade personal protective gear. We have a generous volunteer who has offered to sew face masks for the children and adults living at the largest shelter here in baltimore county. Leon has been producing face masks in our maker space. Lucas used 3d printer at his office to create the type of masks that the hospital might find useful. And those masks not only serve to help slow the spread of infections, they protected our essential work errs and acted as utilitarian love notes for friends and family far away. Youre doing a good job dont get too down the world needs you now we want to know who inspires you. Record a short video and thank someone who is helping others during this crisis and post it on instagram with the goodjobchallenge. You may see it right here on cnn. Also visit cnn hero social media where they are sharing the full stories. Thank you all for being with us all week. Jim and i will see you back here on monday. Im poppy harlow. Newsroom with john king starts now. Hello, everybody. Im senator king in washington. Thanks so much for sharing in date for us. Its a very important date, juneteenth, the historical moment of black freedom playing out this year in the wake of racial reckoning. Marches in atlanta are under way on this day. Lets pause for a second to look at these. That people are on the right side of history. Marchers and speeches. Word belated reached slaves in gavelston texas on this day to hear that they were free. This also she lights the here and now, the debate over policing and race and demand for justice for Rayshard Brooks and so many others, and the Police Officer who pulled the trigger one week ago is due in court this morning. An encounter at wendys escalated when rolfe and another officer tried to execute an arrest and fled police. Facebook took down a Trump Campaign ad with a symbol that matches a nazi concentration camp uniform and a resignation from the black leadership saying her conscience will not allow her to serve of this president and theres preferred coronavirus news suggesting that you forgot and ignore the pandemic but the numbers and facts tell us what you already know. You can not wish away this resilient virus.
