The president wasnt done complaining. He blamed democrats for failing to include money for daca. He enordered the end of the program. He wants a line item veto, which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional 20 years ago. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell has bluntly said will not happen. All of this again just one big president ial temper tantrum. The president knew he had to sign the bill, but he also knew his base would be furious about the lack of funding for his long promised wall. So he signed p behind closed doors. That wasnt the big thing where you know, he does this with the paper and shows you what hes signing. A closed News Conference with no actual questions from reporters about someone who shouted the ones to the president as he was walking out the door. Watch this. Thank you all very much. Mr. President , are you lying about the affairs . Just camera clicks. President didnt answer that. Maybe he didnt hear. Then i guess he didnt hear jeff zeleny asking the president , as he was heading to marine one on his way to maralago, here it is. Will you watch 60 minutes on sunday, mr. President . Stormy daniels attorney who tweeted out a picture of a dvd late last night, if a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is this worth . He told wolf blitzer this today. The tweet is a warning shot. I want to be really clear about this. It is a warning shot. So much more on that in just a few minutes. We have a lot to cover here on a friday night. I want to bring in Matthew Rosenberg and political analyst kirstin powers. And former congressman david jolly. Happy friday to everyone. Thank you so much for joining us. Lets talk about this mark. Seriously, usually we see this right. Big sweeping signatures too. Why didnt we see that today . Because everything that he ran on. And i know some people said he didnt run as a fiscal conservative. Everything he ran on as a republican, he went back against in order to try to get this bill through today. He knew that the republicans were having trouble on capitol hill, but the fact of the matter is, don, that donald trump was upset. Donald trump was angry that he didnt get all the money for the wall, and he needed a distraction. The news hasnt been so good for him in the last 48 hours, and he needed a distraction. If you need any proof of that, why did he do this today . Why wasnt the president out front on monday and tuesday saying, we need to get our spending down, we need to get this bill done, were coming up against a deadline, we didnt hear much from him other than what was happening behind the scenes with white house aides crafting this bill. There was, though, 1. 6 billion in there for securing the border wall, right . Wasnt there 1. 6 billion in there . Yeah, but not all of that can be used to build the walt. Of that money, its existing fencing. Its not even true quite frankly. If he helped to craft this, why the tantrum matthew or saying, i will never sign a bill like this again or pretending maybe hes not going to sign it. What was that all about . This is a guy whose used to getting what he wants. He ran a small family business, everybody worked for him, he owned the company, there was no separation of powers, there were no people to be negotiated with, i think this is remains an incredibly difficult situation for President Trump to manage. He has a strong personality to manage, we all have bad days. I can throw tantrums too. So publicly over the apairs of state over budget for our government, its one of the things youre looking at a guy who is not used to the restrictions on power he doesnt think he should have. I want to read, this is from the wall street journal. White house aids huddle with mr. Trump and warned him he might catch blame for shutting down the government on a weekend he planned to spend at his palm beach florida resort. F that mr. Trump said. How do you read this, kirstin. Well, i think look, he should be unhappy with it because it doesnt represent his priorities. How did that happen . He had his staff working with people in congress. Hes the head of the Republican Party theoretically, the things hes upset about, he didnt get the funding for the wall, he wouldnt strike a deal with the democrats. The democrats were willing to give him the emergency he wanted if he gave them a deal on daca. Instead he came back and asked for things the democrats couldnt get him. He didnt want funding cut off to sanctuary cities. They increased funding on a lot of programs he wanted to see cut. We have a man who told us hes the best deal maker there is, and he gets this horrible deal that doesnt represent his priorities, he wants to veto it, but he cant his staff negotiated that. The president called for two things that arent going to happen he wants congress to give him a line item vetoes. He wants to get rid of the filibuster rule in the senate. Both things are not happening. Does he understand how this works . No, he doesnt. Listen, this is the biggest wholesale failure legislatively of Donald Trumps administration, no two ways about it. He proposed a budget that cut a lot of domestic programs, all of those kud cuts were rejected. Democratic priorities were funded in this bill. The fact that he tried to new answer his way into science this, frankly, is a disappointment to his base. Theres no other way around that. This is a complete abdication to the swamp. And donald trump signed a bill today that represents not only what weve seen in the past, but something that republican congresses have issued in recent years, they gave him a larger domestic budget than anything president obama ever had. President trump signed it today, he caved. The white house tonight announcing a ban to prevent most transgender individuals from serving in the military. Why is this being announced with President Trump in marra lag ga on a friday night . Clearly they want to bury it. Its an issue the Trump Administration has struggled with. The good thing about this. If there can be any good you find in this. It doesnt ban all transgender folks from serving in the military. Those guidelines having just looked at them, certainly come into question, part of those guidelines say, if you have had some surgery or youre going to require surgery, that would disqualify you from serving in the military. Would you say that to a woman whos going to have a baby. Would you say that to anyone, look, you may get cancer, were going to have to pay for your health care down the road 1234 would you say that to anyone . They spend more on viagra than they would ever spend on the surgery for transgender people, so the idea that somehow which theyve said before this is some sort of its too expensive, its going to harm them, is absurd, and then the statement that came out from sarah sanders, there was definite implication that it could undermine military readiness. It doesnt make sense, if youre going to let them stay in if theyre already in, youre acknowledging its not affecting military readiness. I think this is a terrible decision on their part. The white house was involved in crafting this bill we talked about, also, whats happened with the transgender bill on a friday night. If the president was really concerninged about these issues, would he if he really cared that much, would he do it on friday night and then go . When it comes to this budget, he could have said something before. Is this attributable to too much cable news watching executive time . Is it because theres a revolving door at the white house . Why this drama . Im going to guess all of the above there. The president could have come out this week, last week, and started working for a bill he wanted. He sat back, and what he got he didnt want. The transgender ban, sounds like policy crow ated a campaign promise, but not matching the facts and the experts that have done a number of reports. Could it be that hes trying to change the headlines . You know this white house its hard to tell from minute to minute. This is a policy thats going to be a lot less unpopular than what the white house has done. Lots more to talk about, hold your thoughts when we come right back. Thats how we like it. Unitedhealthcare. This week has been one more tsunami of breaking news. The putin investigation, to the replacement of h. R. Mcmaster with john bolton. I could go on but we only have so much time in this broadcast. The data harvesting from Cambridge Analytica and john bolton. Bolton was one of Cambridge Analyticas first customers. They signed up specifically for this profiling that cambridge claimed it could offer. How effective that ever was is a huge question. They were really close. Cambridge analytica was writing talking points for bolton to explain his work with this new position. I think the wealthy patron who backed trump. Cambridge analytica is a company that harvest ed personal data under false pretenses. He was bragging they send prostitutes to seduce politicians of rival candidates in foreign elections. And this is a company in a lot of trouble. You spoke to Cambridge Analytica whistle blower christopher wiley, he told you boltons pac was interested in ways to make people more militaristic . I think john bolton has been clear about his vision for the world. A lot of times in his career. It does go to figure if hes running a pac. He wants to see a more robust aggressive american posture. The way chris put it. They thought americans were limp wristed and spineless and he needed to stiffen them up. What do you think this says about bolton and how hell look at his National Security adviser. Its consistent with who hes always been. Its who he was when he was in the bush administration, and he was in the war in iraq. An ambassador to the united nations. I mean, hawkish doesnt even begin to capture his world view. Theres almost no problem he doesnt think a military strike or all out war would solve. Hes even talked recently about a extreme views. Id like to persuade people on some policies, this suggests almost like a want to brainwash people into having this militaristic view, and to think hes going to be the person advising the president is a pretty scary thing. Its interesting that people can be manipulated, how people can be manipulated without knowing theyre being manipulated. Especially with all the reporting weve seen out of cnn, matthew and his colleagues, when it comes to facebook. Weve all known that all of these companies, these social Media Companies have taken our data. We dont know what theyve used it for, people seem to be okay with it, this is a big moment in time, i think, because we heard Mark Zuckerberg say the other night that perhaps facebook needs to be regulated. We dont know what the regulations are, now were seeing the dirty underbelly of politics right now, with whats happening with cambridge analyt analytica. Of course it should be regulated. The bots should be removed, they should go through and scrub fake accounts. You should have to put your information. You should put your name there, you should be required to put your name and it shouldnt be anonymous so you can be held accountable for it. I have to ask you about john boltons pac contributed to your house campaign. Heres what i would say about that, i love this question because of this, i had grave concerns about Barack Obamas foreign policy. The gaps in the middle east, and some of his questions with russia, which seemed juvenile compared to what were seeing from donald trump. But what i know now is this. I would rather have ideological questions about a president s foreign policy, than judgment questions about a foreign policy, and so yes john bolton did contribute to my campaign. His super pac did, what i know now is, we have a president who reacts to the last person who has his ear. Thats a grave concern. John bolton, ive met him one time. I know him to be a hawk as defined by the most ardent hawks. The president deserves to be counseled by hawks and doves. The president as arbiter of that information. I dont see eye to eye with john bolton on everything. I dont. The concern is the judgment of the president of the United States and who he listens to. I think the transition of the National Security team in the last two weeks is of grave concern to the republic. Do you think thats a good fit with the president . You dont think its a good fit . No, i dont simply because of the president s temperament. Hes continuing to surround himself with hardliners. I want to switchgears and talk about andrew mccabe, he was fired less than two days before he was supposed to retire. He wrote an op ed for the Washington Post, he said President Trumps cruelty reminded me of the days immediately following the firing of james comey. The president s comments about me were equally hurtful and false which shows that he has no idea how fbi people feel about their leaders. He isnt going out quiet. Hes describing the president as cruel in this. The president is cruel in this. Just the way they go about firing james comey, and mccabe, if you read that whole op ed, it notes that mccabe found out he was fired from a friend that he saw it on cnn, that he was fired thats when he went and saw he found it on cnn. Comey was out in los angeles and found out from the news as well. Tillerson reportedly from twitter. This has become let me answer the question this way, i ran into an fbi agent, high ranking agent, who i know a little bit. Last week, i dont watch tv any more. Why not . Because im sick and tired of the fbi getting hammered all the time. I said, listen, i dont want to talk about work with you, i understand theres a lot of pressure on you, the American People dont believe or support what donald trump is saying about the fbi. He may have some of his supporters, the majority of the people dont. You think the majority of the people dont . I think in the end we can go out and do stories and fan the flames and we can talk to the 37 of the people who support donald trump, you talk to the other 60 of the American People who look at the fbi, especially if you know someone whos in Law Enforcement, its easier to be dismissive of president interrupts attacks. I just wonder, you having worked at Different Networks and you know what the information that some other networks put out regarding the fbi and regarding this president is not always its not always faxable and right on, do you think that most people do you agree with mark about most people not feeling that way about the fbi . Well, i think that the president s attacks erode part of the country. They watch fox news or listen to conservative media, who take that as sort of the gospel. Maybe i agree with mark. Everybody in the country doesnt think this, and i wouldnt say most of the people in the country believe this about the fbi. Hes had an impact in terms of the Republican Party, just imagine if barack obama had attacked the fbi. He would have been called unamerican. This used to be the fbi and Law Enforcement used to be the core of the Republican Party. We always stand by the people who are basically out there trying to protect us. Its amazing how much hes been able to shift that in such a short amount of time. Interesting. Okay. Thank you guys. Have a great weekend. I appreciate you joining us here. We come back, you should do it, thats what the Trump Campaign official told George Papadopoulos about meeting with russians. We know that papadopoulos is cooperating with robert mueller. What could all of this mean for his investigation. Applebees to go. Order online and get 10 off 30. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. The russia investigation, remember George Papadopoulos, remember how team trump tried to dismiss him as a coffee boy . Theres a new report that the campaign encouraged papadopoulos to talk to russians. I want to bring in ken cuccinelli. Michael, the Washington Post is reporting the Trump Campaign urged George Papadopoulos to do an interview with the Russian News Agency as foreign outreach. Brian lanza told papadopoulos, you should do it. Does this correct the picture that the Trump Campaign tried to put out there. No one really knew who he was or what role he played in the campaign. All of a sudden, theres this one count lying to agents information. Whats this all about the trump surrogates and the campaign said, he was a coffee boy, had a de men mouse role. Now what is coming out is that the role that papadopoulos played was more significant than the campaign has let on. And that papadopoulos had more communications than pressings of the campaign to meet with russians. During this march, april, may, june, july period. Im not sure it makes anything more criminally actionable it does create a picture of the campaign sort of directing papadopoulos on his way rather than being accidental. Whats the face for . If you read the Washington Post article. It minimizes the guy even more. You guys are talking russia and people its a reporter. A reporter who emailed numerous people in the Trump Campaign and only one of them responded, George Papadopoulos
