Political analyst ryan lizza and propaganda expert kevin kosar, Vice President o policy at the our street institute. So glad to have all of you on. Kevin, since youre the propaganda expert, lets talk to you first. What is your reaction to this hollywoodstyle pitch to north korea . Is this oldfashioned propaganda or is it smart persuasion maybe . It was strange to be honest. Ive never seen anything like this in a diplomatic setting, and i cant tell whether the president is crazy or crazy like a fox. This film was really something because the whole thing seemed to be playing on the vanity of kim jongun. I mean it emphasized that there are very few world histol actors amongst the b of people who are on this earth, and that he had the moment to make a choice to make himself a man of history. It dangled this beautiful vision of what his country could become. Again, ive never seen anything like this. And, yeah, it was clearly propaganda aimed at persuading the north korean dictator. I think the question is did it work . Before you answer that, lets play a little bit more of this movie. A new world can begin today. Be part of that world where the doors of opportunity are ready to be opened. Investment from around the world. Where you can have medical breakthroughs and abundance of resources. Innovative technology and new discoveries. What if . Can history be changed . Will the world embrace this change, and when could this moment in history begin in it comes down to a choice. On this day, in this time, at this moment. The world will be watching, listening, anticipating, hoping. Will this leader choose to advance his country and be part of a new world, be the hero of his people . Will he shake the hand of peace and enjoy prosperity like he has never seen . A great life or more isn . Which path will be chosen . So ill take the boat and the waterslide. My goodness, that just seems odd. Has this ever played at a summit . Have you ever heard of that in. I havent, but i think everybody is missing the big storyause i think the president said he played this as a cassette on his ipad or Something Like this. This was a strange way to announce the new retro ipad out there. The truth of the matter i you have to separate the video from the narrative because theyre two different or the execution from the narrative. The narrative of what hes done and this whole thing actually was pretty smart. What he did is he didnt do like we dn iran and make the missfak and say basically you slow down your nuclear process and well give you all sorts of money. He played to the sort of arrogance to some degree or the insecurities. The vanity. The vanity of the north Korean Leader and said, look, this is a moment in history. You can make your mark. You can make your destiny. From a vide look, if it wa sitting there and he said, look, heres something i want to show you about what your country could be, if i was advising the president and he called me in, id like twice. He has not this afternoon. I would have advise him to not then make it public because then it goes to a p. R. Campaign once you make it public. Ryan, im looking for you to be youve got two voices on either side of this. Was this smart . Maybe it was. I dont know. I mean, look, i think it was strange. I think the power of a propaganda video like that is extremely overrated. And if the president believes that a video like this could persuade the leader of north korea to make a fundamental decision about whether he Needs Nuclear Weapons for his regime to survive or not, i think thats worrying. Look, think on the plus side of this summit, we ratcheted down the really, really ighteninghetoric of a year ago when it seemed like we were closer to, you know, hostilities than ever before with north korea, or at least since the war. On the downside, though, it doesnt seem like this summit was well thoug in terms of what we were gaining while giving up quite a bit. I mean you cant get back what we gave, right . No president , american president for a reason gave kim or his predecessors this kind of world stage to be on par w an american president. We cant gethat back. Youre doing big picture. Can i just stick to this video because i i thought i was watching like in a world p gone mad. People are saying, you know, this is not how president obama or president bush would have done it. Why doesnt everybody just understand its never going to happen that way . This is a differente withdiffer president. Thats not im just questioning someone who is the leader of the free world and to have staffers s produced by staffers on the National Security council, the nsc is a very highlevel group. They include people like the chairman of the joint chiefs, o defense secretary mattis and others wn appropriate. So im just surprised that people of this stature would produce something is so ridiculous. Well, but, again even if it was done by their staffers. You have to sit there and say despite this sort of nontraditional way donald trump does things, he did get north korea to the table. Im saying donald trump did this. Im saying the staffers. But, john, getting north korea to the table go ahead. Let him finish. I was going to say he was very proud of this. To him, this was ach book. This was just saying arent they smarter than that . First of all, theyre not the boss. Lets put this in perspective as well. That video would not have appeared and been public if donald trump did not want it to be public. Go ahead, ryan. Like anyone else, we all hope that this new look, its always better to talk, right . Its better that these guys are talking rather than what was going on last year. Everybody has to he that leads to some kind of breakthrough. But i dont see how it seems like the thing that was pd more than anything else was this video. We didnt have a we didnt have any tangible gains in this meeting. I mean kim agreed to the denuclearization of the korean peninsula, something he first agreed to or his predecessors agreed to in 1992. So, you know, the idea that it seems like from all whats been public, the most preparation at this summit, more work went into a video to show him than anything else. Okay. And if thats our whole strategy, were in some trouble. All right. Look, it could have been smart. Kim jonguns father, a movie buff. As we know, he loves pop culture. I mean this moviestyle video actually could be effective in winning over kim. What do you think, kevin . Because i would want to move to that place. It looked beautiful to me. The horses running on the water, that did look kind of nice. Yeah. Yeah, its hard to say because kim is a black box. I mean theres so little intelligence on how this guy thinks. Hes been brought up in this bizarre world. Who knows if hes going to be the least bit persuaded by this or just going to turn around and punk donald trump. The thing i thought that was really odd about the video, other than its mere existence, was that it wasnt just focusing on denuclearization, which is the subject of what the agreement was. It was talking about complete westernization of north korea. And i think if history has shown anything, its that very rarely do communist dictators just liberalize, open up the country for investment, Start Building hotels and, you know gently let go of power. They tend not to do that. And kim himself is hes living pretty large. I mean if he wants cognac, if he wants videos, if he wants Dennis Rodman to come, he snaps his fingers and he gets it. Its not clear how much he would gain other than the image as a world historical actor, but maybe that will prove compelling to him. Wasnt that a part of the video, to make the point this is a generational shift for north korea, and we do somebody who is an nba fan. This video sounded like something the Chicago Bulls might come out to. A new world could begin today, one of friendship, respect and goodwill. Be part of that world where the to be opened. Investment from around the world where you can have medical breakthroughs and abundance of resources. It looked like some of the leftovers on the cutting room floor for the pitch for trump university. I mean it was literally this kind of, you know like a multilevel marketing scam or something. Join the program. This is what you get. Look, if we take it seriously, right, if this is what trump presented to kim rather than a sort of clear, detailed piece of writing or letter saying, do x, y, and z, and you will get a, b, and c, i mean what is he saying in that video, right . Hes basically saying, choose this path or else, right . Thats the sort of subtle or maybe not so subtle message there. All of that they mentioned, though is not part of a dictatorship because there are ions people who starving in nkorea. The video itself clearly uses like images from the propaganda arm of the regime. Well, you know, it sounds a little l. Ron hubbard to me, the video. Take a ln to what President Trump said about north korea after the summit. They have great beaches. You see that whenever theyre exploding theirannons into the roeg ocean, right . I said, wouldnt that make a great condo . I explained instead of doing that, you could have the best hotels in the world right there. Think of it from a real estate perspective. Maybe to johns point, maybe that is a priority for kim. I dont know. I mean, look, at absurd, right. The american president talking about beaches and condos. But to give him a very big benefit of the doubt, what hes saying is trying to make this case that opening up to the world will be beneficial to north korea, right . Hes trying to make the case that he has a decision to make here, you know, truly go down the path of denuclearization, and it will bring a lot of benefits to his regime. Okay. Get a dvd of dianetics. Youll know exactly what im about. When we come back, my next guest says President Trump was outfoxed by kim jongun. And well play the surprisingly candid selfassessment by the president. I forgot. But what really came of it, and who came out ahead . Joining me now is New York Times columnist nicholas kristof. Thank you for joining us. Good to be with you. So your last column is called trump was outfoxed in singapore. How so . Well, President Trump has emphasized that i mean i think he sees this as this milestone toward north korea giving up nuclear weapons. North korea simply promised what it promised regularly since way back in 1992, which is denuclearization. You know, theres a reason they use that word and not disarmament. Denuclearization, to them, means that it starts with the u. S. Cutting off south korea from its alliance. And so north korea gave up nothing. And, you know, we gave security guarantees to north korea. We provided the summit itself and lavish praise to kim jongun. And we canceled military exercises, which are a substantial thing. So we gave up a lot. How is this different . How does this i dont know. I guess we could call it an agreement. It seems to be the joint statement, yeah. How does it compare to other failed agreements from past administrations . Well, i mean first i think its worth pointing out that even if an agreement doesnt lead to eliminating nuclear weapons, it can still be worth while. So like the 1994 agreed framework, it failed in the end in 2002. But for eight years it did prevent development of new plutonium weapons. But this is far below the standard reached in the past. For example, in 1994, there were International Inspectors who were on at the military complex in north korea. There was a halt to new production of plutonium for weapons. In 2005, north korea promised to rejoin the npt, the Nuclear Nonproliferation treaty. Not a word about that this time. Pompeo is going to try to work all this out now that the summit has happened, right . Instead of trying to get this before, theyre going try to do it terwards. Will he have success in is that a possibility . So i think that its possible that there will be some genuine progss. So it may well be that nor ko promise monot to have new missile tests. They may have a freeze on production of plutm, possibly on enriching plutonium. What is a little weird is we gave the concessions up front, and concessions may or may not arrive from north korea down the road. And it was also frankly kind of troubling to have President Trump emerge and use lines that we associate with north korean propaganda. President trump criticized the u. S. Military exercises as very provocative. I mean thats the standard north korean line. He adopted that line and also sort of adopted the language and the way kim jongun feels about it by saying when were suspending military actions that were actually saving the United States money because it costs money. And then saying it was provocative. Thats kim jonguns. Thats kim jonguns line. Thats chinas line. Likewise on human rights. So President Trump acknowledged that kim jongun is rough on human rights. Lots of other countries are rough too, but, you know, theres no country in the world that is remotely like north korea on human rights. For him to defend north korea, that just left a i flinched at that. So, listen, this cnn analysts point out while the agreement is said to be very comprehensive, the north does not go beyon past pledges. I agree with that. Further, there no details on a time line or verification process. Now, on the issue of timetable, trump said only that he would push for north korea to denuclearize as fast as it can mechanically. But he acknowledges it could take a long time. So basically saying theres no there there, but youre saying be optimistic. But it doesnt really say anything. I mean theres not only no timetable, but there isnt even a sense of what the timetable would be toward because theres no promise that, yeah, at some point in the future we will have no nuclear weapons. So what was this, then . It was great pageantry. President trump would say it was a meeting of the minds, an establishment of goodwill. I think he watched too much too ch sort of television where these great men walk into the room and suddenly they resolvome long historical problem. Thats basically not how these issues are resolved. And in the meantime look, i mean the problems with this agreement are an awful lot better than the problems we had six months ago where we were concerned about a war breaking out. So there has been progress in that sense. But the progress comes largely from concessions not made by kim jongun, but by concessions made by President Trump, who has essentially defused the crisis he himself made. Youve been in this game for a while. Usually wn theres a summit like that, theres a stack of pages, right . Right. This is thats it. Bare bones and even within that one page one single page. And there is no meat there. Theres no real content there. Yeah. And in the meantime, we gave up a lot for and spent a lot of money to have t all the way over there and the news organizations spent money and we spent a lot of time. Whatever, im just saying. Lets listen to the reaction from the president. I think honestly, i think hes going to do these things. I may be wrong. I may stand before you in six months and say, hey, i was wrong. I dont know that ill ever admit that, but ill find some kind of an excuse. That was one of the most honest statements ive ever heard him say. Thats right. Essentially what is striking about it is its a leap of faith. It reminds me of what bush talking about looking into putins eyes and, you know, finding hope there. Saying he trusts kim jongun. He likes kim jongun. And this is a total triumph hope over experience. I dont know of any north korea expert who really anticipates that north korea is going to surrender its nuclear weapons, and yet President Trump seems to believe that he emerged from singapore triumphant. His narrative is that his sanctions forced north korea to give up its nuclear weapons. The north korean narrative is that north koreas leadership used nuclear tests, missile tests, intimidated the United States of america, forced President Trump to go to asia to meet their leader, and then to surrender military exercises, and they feel triumphant. Put him on a level with president of the United States. A dictator. I dont want people to lose what you said in that statement. Very clear. You said you dont think they will ever completely denuclearize . I dont believe so. Thank you, nick. I appreciate it. When we come back, president bill clinton stepping in i
