The latest surge in coronavirus cases driving home once again how vulnerable Senior Citizens are. Many forced to spend the holidays alone in Nursing Homes after spending months in isolation this spring. Cnns brin begynbrynn. Reporter since the pandemic began, its the physical connection with family kathy corey and other residents at this nursing home ache for. Its like my heart gets ripped out sometimes. Im just waiting. Reporter waiting for what . To be able to hug again. Reporter especially this time of year. The holidays are about memories with the family. Its hard enough not being with your family but when they cant even come up and eat a meal with you or anything or visit, its hard. Reporter in the spring, the coronavirus ravaged the northeast. Nursing homes may have paid the heftiest price. To date, residents in longterm care facilities make up 8 of all cases in the u. S. But nearly half of the countrys total deaths. Its like being in a battle. Its the same mentality. Reporter bill white is the owner of beechwood longterm care in connecticut. To keep residents safe, white put in place a strict multilayer system of checks to prevent covid19 from infiltrating these walls. A Health Questionnaire and testing requirement for visitors. Beechwood has gone through periods of denying visitations outright to allowing them with restrictions. You dont know what works and at the end no one is going to care if you keep it out. Reporter so far, beechwood has had just 14 cases since march, three of them residents, the rest, staff, a success by all accounts. We are really lucky to have such precautions taken. We didnt see that everywhere, and the people really paid the price. Reporter in the last week alone, connecticut saw 306 confirmed coronavirus cases of nursing home residents. 39 people have died. A sign of where the state may be headed. Last week, this once abandoned nursing home became fully operational again. Its reserved for covid19 positive longterm care residents. They are moved here to mitigate the virus spreading like a brush fire inside their home facilities. The amount of referrals were getting and people calling, asking can we take patients. You know, its been very consistent since the day we opened. We havent really had a slow moment. Reporter with help from the national guard, the state first opened this facility in april. It was one of four like it needed in the spring to get control of cases. It closed in the summer when the numbers went down. For now the state is relying on just this building but it hasnt ruled out the possibility of needing more space as cases surge. On this day, eight sick elderly patients were expected to arrive. We talked to Charles Miller who was one of the first patients admitted. Hes a beechwood resident who tested covid positive while recovering from a stroke in the hospital. Its tough on the elderly. I think its tough on everybody. Reporter miller tries to keep a good spirit. You look good. I feel great. Reporter this thanksgiving will be the first away from his wife and family. We have next year. Yeah, we sure do. Reporter seeing their loved ones face, even a face time visit is sometimes a critical piece in their care. Reporter millers goal is to fight the virus, get back to beechwood and join the family these residents have become, as they stick together and stay healthy, all anxiously awaiting that one thing. Another big change this thanksgiving, the annual macys thanksgiving day parade will go on but there will be no crowd. The signature character balloons, animated floats and of course santa claus hopefully in a mask, but purely for symbolic reasons. Missy and barry sent life sized card board cutouts to their daughter in california, and son in texas, and the grand kids who they havent been able to hug since march. Not only will the larger than life grandparents be at the thanksgiving table today, they will be by the tree at christmas. I have to say, boris, obviously a good role model but the cutouts look pretty good. They look great. And thats an awesome idea. We have to acknowledge, a lot of people are missing loved ones, a lot of uncertainty. A lot of folks not sure where things are going to go in the new year either. In moments like these i think of the gratitude i have for the idea that chaos breeds change, the opportunity for change, and perhaps a realignment of priorities.
