As you know there are meetings going on as we speak in a certain location which i wont name. Its not so far away from here. I think there is a lot of good will. I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done. Those optimistic words striking because it was President Trump who days ago cancelled the summit but north koreas conciliatory action was a surprise. The leaders of north korea and south Korea Holding a meeting and kim again insisted he is prepared to give up the nuclear program. Translator as a continuation he confirmed his commitment for denuclearization emphasizing he will cooperate for peace and prosperity through successful north korea u. S. Summit meeting. It is a remarkable moment. If you listen to the president last night and listen to president moon who seems wildly optimistic does it look like the summit will go forward and are they making progress on the substance . Are they just trying to have a meeting or making progress where if they have a meeting kim is coming to the table at least with the u. S. Thinking he is reasonably open minded to giving it up . Those are different things. I think both sides want the meeting more than they dont whether it happens on the 12th of june is an open question. There really is not very much time to make that happen. U. S. Planning delegation that had been scheduled to go today was pulled back is now going to go today. I think they are on their way. So from the white house side they will at least give it a go to see if they can put it together for the 12th. Other statements talking about the libya model, president saying he wants to sit down oneonone with the north Korean Leader even if all of the groundwork hasnt been done and we heard from a senior official that they didnt believe the groundwork could be done. One of the important things was secretary pompeo testifying. He made clear it was that they lost complete contact with the North Koreans for a period of day days. When you look at the outside dynamics whether president moon in south korea or mike pompeo or president himself i think all three have made clear they believe they are ready for talks and the meeting should occur. When you have all forces driving to a meeting i think it under scores the fact that all sides want the meeting. My sense of things right now and i think the sense on capitol hill is that they want the meeting. They want the sit down. They will figure those pieces out later. To your point in terms of we dont know where kim jongun. Mike pompeo believed kim jongun understood where the u. S. Was and grasped where the u. S. Was and showed some sense of we get that and we can get there. All of those things put together is why june 12 is not only on the table but i think is the preference. We still dont know even though mike pompeo knows everything else. To the if we can get there part means is this young leader willing to walk away from 50 years of this countrys history. The process wont matter if they have a summit and make progress. The process has been pretty messy. South koreans felt blind sided when the president sent the letter. The new yorker says President Trump is a better deal breaker than deal maker. The president keeps talking about being the art of the deal president and things keep blowing up. We have seen inside the administration a bit of a tug of war. Mike pompeo says i met with the guy. John bolton seems skeptical. Reportedly mike pompeo was not happy that john bolton had perhaps made this a little bit more apparent it was going to blow up. The difference between the art of the deal and talking about real estate is that there are Nuclear Weapons on the table. It was striking on capitol hill how little surprise there was from republicans. I think they thought that this maybe would come together a couple more times because they want the president going in there with a strong hand instead of concern he was just going to wing it. When something is this important it is not the best approach. There are conservative hawks and voices who think the president is approaching this backwards and to deal with the china issue first and then north korea. Obviously the president thinks he can have a summit with north korea. We dont have a north korea problem we have a china problem. North korea is a wild dog. China holds the leash. To change north koreas behavior change chinese behavior first. It is that confrontation which will determine the course of the 21st century. The relationship is the big question of the next 20, 30, 50 years. Is it fair . There is always the question of can president xi say get in line . Clearly not because he has been saying for two years now to check it and he hasnt. Clearly kim does not do whatever xi tells him to. It has been frustrating for the chinese. There is a tactical question as you point out of whether both things should be pursued at exactly the same time. They are very much linked. I think it is important to note that during that briefing a reporter asked why the session couldnt be on the record. There was nothing secret or nothing at all sensitive being relayed. In fact, much of it was logistical questions filling in around the pompeo testimony. The officials answered to why he couldnt be on the record is the president has spoken. Lets let the president s words stand and then you have the president coming back and saying that the official in his words dont exist. Dont exist. And then the background trick is all administrations have tried it before. Wasnt a phony person. Put pressure on democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from their parents. Catch and release. He goes on and on and on. Previous laws enacted under other administrations including democrats have separated children of immigrants from their parents. This Administration Just enacted new policies that exacerbate the issue or continue the issue. Here is the president talking on fox news thursday about immigration. We know why he wants to talk about the issue. You can get your facts straight. We have done a lot of work on the wall. We are doing a lot of work on security. The border is down over 40 and we have a great economy, probably the best economy the country has ever had. People come across. We will get the rest. Not sure the point of reference. Happy for the white house to give it to me and i will say here is what it meant. The most recent statistics that the president has complained about these. Its perplexing on a number of fronts. On the separation of parents and their children Jeff Sessions has made clear that this was a deliberate effort to disincentivise people coming across the border. If you dont want your child separated then dont bring them across the border illegally. If this is a policy to help bring border crossings down. They are up again. Then own it. And the attorney general has and john kelly gave a talk about this. Homeland security has been talking about this. If there is rationale then own it as the rest of your administration has leading up to this point. Dont blame past laws. There are laws you can quibble with that could have led to this point but there is a clear policy shift which has been debated for months inside the administration. That is the perplexing thing. I do keep going back to the commencement address. There are strategic mistruths or lies that you can tell why the president is doing it. On the idea of number of shifts which was way off on the pay raises which was way off. Its why. There were elements of the speech which were very good and borderline inspirational. It is ideal for a commencement address telling stories about past naval aviators. Why you cloud that with statements that have no basis in fact that dont help your administration. Its not pushing forward an agenda item and not trying to shift a message. It was just saying things that werent true. The defense increase that they got was no small thing. It was a huge deal. Sequestration was hollowing out the military. You can just focus on that. There are facts that you can talk about. Why he goes in a different direction i dont get it.
