Overnight senator Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell made it clear he will be bound by nothing including his own precedent when deciding whether to confirm a Supreme Court nominee during an election year. This is what he said overnight. If a Supreme Court justice was to die next year what would you do . I would fill it. This will be news to merrick garland. In a far cry from 2016 when president obama nominated garland during an election year. All we are doing, chris, is following a longstanding tradition of not filling vacancies on the Supreme Court in the middle of a president ial election year. A spokesman for mcconnell said the difference now is that in 2016 the white house was controlled by a democrat, the senate by republicans. This time the white house and senate are controlled by the gop. Plenty of democrats are slamming mcconnell as a hypocrite including much of the 2020 democratic field. He said hell fill it, but thats the job of the president of the United States, not Mitch Mcconnell. We have to do a little history about the division of responsibilities between the congress and the executive branch. I have argued in front of the u. S. Supreme court. I want to believe it is a nonpolitical organization and that politics are checked at the door. But when you see things like that and hear things like that from senator mcconnell thats no longer the case. We could and should do better. It was a sham when mcconnell claimed there was an historical precedent. He said there is a long tradition. There was no tradition of it. The issue is that Mitch Mcconnell will do what he can. The strong do as they will. The weak suffer as they must. Hes going to get it done. Obviously. Proudly. Hes boldly saying that. How can people not see it as hypocrisy when they are changing their own equation midstream. There is every reason to expect that if for some reason a democrat takes the white house and republicans maintain control of the senate if a democrat nominates a justice there is no way to think mcconnell will confirm in year one. Justin amash hosting his first town hall since becoming the sole republican in congress to say the president committed impeachable offenses. Last night he got a standing ovation. Thank you. He said many of his fellow republicans believe hes right but wont say it publicly. He told the audience congress cannot be passive observers. He also heard from critics. Robert mueller clearly identifies and analyzes a number of instances, several instances of obstruction of justice. He really left it to congress to come to a determination on these issues. I think its really important that we do our job as a congress, that we not allow misconduct to go undeterred, that we not just say someone can [ cheers and applause ] violate the public trust and that there are no consequences to it. I have been your supporter since you started running for congress. I cant even tell you how disappointed i am. How can you become a democrat when we voted for you as a republican . You drink the same koolaid as the democrats. I want to hear the answer. That was a tease. Cnns hailey byrd was at amashs town hall. Shes live for us in grand rapids, michigan. What did you make of the reception he got last night . It was interesting. I think a lot of people expected the town hall to be a lot like the outrage and furor over the debates in 2018. People expected people to harass amash over his stance. Instead he was greeted with a standing ovation and the crowd was largely friendly to him. Like the woman, she was heckled throughout her conversation with him. People told her to move on. People laughed at her when she invoked Hillary Clinton and the deep state. The people who spoke to me at the town hall, many were democrats who were there to support amash. The dynamic was so prevalent. The few people who did oppose amash said im nervous now. I expected a lot of Trump Supporters to be here and theyre not. It went better than amash and the team expected. Thats interesting. If the place was packed with democrats obviously thats a selfselecting group and that would explain the standing ovation. It is important to figure out how many Trump Supporters. We saw the woman in the maga hat. Congressman amash has said President Trump committed impeachable offenses but has not signed on to impeachment resolutions yet. Whats next for him . Last night amash urged House Speaker nancy pelosi to move forward with an impeachment inquiry. He said it would be appropriate to do that and he hasnt signed on to any impeachment resolutions. He said if i want to sign on to one of those, i would want to make sure i agree with their reasoning. Amash has been slowly laying out the specifics of the stance and his reasoning on this over the past few days, the past week while hes been doing tweet threads. If he moves forward with anything it would be on his own. The crowd, when he talked about impeachment, those were his biggest applause lines. He stayed the same on policy positions and, hes still the same conservative libertarian hes always been. Hes getting support from people on the left and even moderate democrats here in grand rapids for this position. Hailey, thank you very much for being our eyes and ears on the ground in that town hall. We really appreciate that. Thats interesting, john. I need harry antin to tell us t the breakdown of the audience. If he was preaching to democrats thats different. Whats clear is he wasnt ridden out of town exactly. Good point. Welcome whats next israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu is struggling to form a new government. If he is not able to it could trigger new elections. Orin lieberman has more from us from jerusalem. Reporter there are less than 11 hours before Benjamin Netanyahu has to announce hes formed a government or the country may head to new elections less than a few months after the last election which has never happened before in israels history. In fact, discussions have begun in Israels Parliament about the final readings of a bill to set new elections already tentatively scheduled for september 17. The deadlock is with Coalition Partners and a proposed conscription law the orthodox parties want it changed. Thats where netanyahu is stuck. President trump weighing in saying hoping things will work out and b. B. And i can continue to make the alliance between america and israel stronger than ever. That may have worked during the general election. It seems to have little effect on either side here with only a few hours before the deadline. There are politically, theoretically other options of how it could play out. Most of those are with somebody else being given the opportunity to form a government. Thats why netanyahu is eyeing the possibility of new elections in september. Were watching that closely. Thank you very much. New this morning, nepal is looking to limit access to Mount Everest as a response to the deadly climbing season. 11 people died so far. Arwa damon is live in kathmandu. What have you learned . Reporter good morning. We spoke to the director general of Nepals Tourism Department who was denying this notion that the country issued too many permits and thats why the overcrowding phenomenon occurred. He said it was because of the weather. There were only a few viable summit days, but he did say that nepal is considering adding a requirement when one applies for a permit to summit everest. That they are going to need to prove a certain level of experience. Right now, you can have zero climbing experience and still end up on the mountain. Arwa, you spoke to people at base camp about their concerns. What did they
