And we had standards of what he would accept and not. And that process intensified. We had very intense negotiations in doha. And were grateful to qatar and oman for helping in this. And when the arrangement came together on terms that we could accept, the president made the difficult but right decision to move ahead. One of the we had an activist on earlier in the show who expressed concern that this only incentivizes Hostage Taking by governments such as irans. There is no question that President Biden with a statement just three days ago on the anniversary of the death of mahsa amini about the support for the rafrn why not people. And at the height of the protests last year, about one this three were using anticensorship stools stools United States. And we see an opportunity to bring home five american citizens and as you said, in the case of simak namazi, he was in prison for five years. Sharghi the same amount of time. And iran really gain no benefit. There are no funds. Iranian he companies are not getting any money. Treasury department has monitoring over the process. So you reject the idea that it incentivizes Hostage Taking in any way . We have not lifted or waived any sanctions. There is an account in south korea that was available for humanitarian trade and we moved it to another restricted account. And there is really no change. This money will be spent over years. And it will benefit the iranian people. This money can only be used, very important, facts here really important and treasury put it all out today for food, medicine, medical devices and Agricultural Products. That is it. Spent over a period of years for third party noniranian vendors. No men goes in to iran. This is the benefit the iranian people. And what is the Oversight Process of that . Obviously the u. S. Has designated iran as State Sponsor of terror and they do Fund Terrorist Acts in gaza, they used to fund Terrorist Attacks against the u. S. In iraq, et cetera, et cetera. How do you make sure none of the funds goes to that . They have are an adversary and well continue to work to deter, contain, isolate iran and deter their aggressive activities. One reason this deal took so long is because we have the most stringent standards possible. Sf there is any diverse, well lock up the funds again. Again, no funds are going to iran at all. These funds are paid to vetted Third Party Vendors for food, medicine, Agricultural Products into iran over a period of years. If there is any diversion, well know it and well lock up these accounts. We held firm to our standards. And so the president made the decision to go forward when all of that was in place. And the bring our families Home Coalition which is active in this type of situation, they also rauz the question of man still detained and why he was left out of the deal and not currently wrongfully detained. Can you explain that . I cant speak to any individual cases. All americans are out of iran. And as i said to the families every day, there is never good news until there is good news. And were committed to bringing everybody out of harms way overseas that is detained. The president has a record on that and well continue for that. And in the case of iran, and the president said this in a statement today, no american should travel to iran. No american passport holder should travel to iran. Five coming home today are dual citizens. The most difficult cases. Last administration they were not able to get any dual citizens home. This is extremely difficult cases. That is why it took a long time and we uphold our standards. This is a good deal and good day for america and as of tonight five families will be reunited. And well be talking to the son of another detained american, bob levinson, believed dead. His family still seeking some final words as to what exactly happened to him. Do you have a message to the levinson family . I do. We keep in close touch with the levinson family. Bob is a hero, well never forget bob. The president spoke about bob today. There are sanctions under the levinson act. And well continue to do that and seek justice for bob. The president and secretary blinken spoke to this and were honored to stay in touch with the family and well never forget about bob. And we cover these stories all the time of americans unjustly detained and i know there is always questions about the prices paid whether it is notorious russians freed in exchange for trevor reid or 6 billion in exchange for these families. And so i know the families are enjoyed. So congratulations. There are five individuals very happy to be coming home. Thank you. And for another American Family of course the nightmare continues. Former fbi agent Robert Levinson was the longest u. S. Citizen held. After his disappearance in 2007 while working at a private investigator, his family now believes that he is dead. We went through this in 2016 and were hoping that the statements today by the president are a positive step and send the message that were not going away and they will have to address this. It is a lot of leverage and there are a lot of iranian assets still frozen and i hope that they continue to use that because the iranians will always be after that money and will want the money. And so a lot of leverage to use and we hope that they will use it to press them for answers. You heard that the administration saying that they are in close touch with your family and they will never give up a Bob Levinsons case. Is that all accurate . Yes, we are in touch with them. We spoke with them before all the events of this week occurred and we were working with them and were hoping that feels like that they are trying to do right by us and these steps were a positive development for us. What do you believe would ultimately stop iran and other hostile nations for taking americans for Political Prisoners or just the battle of good versus evil . I dont know how to tell you because my dad was the first one in gek cad decades back in 2007. And you would never see that they would continue to do it. And immediately after the 2016 deal, i had gone to iran to try to meet with them and negotiate something with them and the day i had left was the day that they had arrested namazis father. And so whether it is for 2028 or if god forbid something were to happen and there would be an opening for somebody to run, there would be a democratic race, obviously given newsome and remember im talking about theoretically 2028. I could be talking about either one. But newsome, Vice President harris, pete buttigieg, Gretchen Whitmer are all out there as potential. They are. I dont think that they are as aggressive as newsome is. Here is the thing. One of the things with all the Hand Wringing and teeth gnashing, the time has really kind of passed for a full vetting of candidates. Everybody complains about the length of american campaigns but they serve a purpose which is that you learn about people during the course of these campaigns. Look at ron desantis who was like a House Of Fire Last fall and he has run into problems and some have to do with how he has he answered questions. The time for voting is about to begin. And so, you know, even at this juncture if joe biden were to say in a week or two weeks, there is not a lot of time for candidates to introduce themselves to the country. But we both remember then senator obama complaining about how long the campaign was taking. But i dont think that he would have been president without the two years to get vetted and have people say yeah, he was only a State Senator but i trust him to be president. And so used to the Holiday Messages for various holidays. Talking quote Unquote Liberal Jews who voted to destroy america and israel, lets heap that you learn from your mistakes and make better choices, he is basically saying that any jew who didnt vote for him which according to polls is 75 of american jews, because they at any timedoesnt doesnt to destroy israel. And why is that not an outcry about that . This could be some outrage, but this is the way he rolls. He wont change. We express outrage each time.
