For diabetes research. The amazing thing, she was on my show in 1999. And we talked about it then. And look how long she fought it before she finally was conquered by it . But i remember at that time how valiant she seemed. Here is another thing about
Mary Tyler Moore
. Mary tyler moore lived closer to death and to illness than the rest of us do in the course of her lifetime. It was always there. Of course, she lost a son to a gunshot wound. It was always there, always present. And she knew always that eventually her condition would deteriorate, as it does with people who have diabetes. And yet she was able to continue to work. Look what she did in ordinary people. Perhaps the most remarkable thing she ever did was ordinary people where she completely producer of grays anatomy, people, young girls were watching grays anatomy, its been on television ten years. I know there is a whole generation of
Women Reporters
who were truly inspired by
Mary Tyler Moore
in that show. Did she realize her impact, both on women journalists, but also just on women and everyone really . I think she knew it. Look,
Valery Harper
spun off from her,
Cloris Leachman
spun off from her. Lou grant, the character, played by ed asner, asner spun off from her. She and her husband grant tinker at that time, they created one incredible show after another, all of them inspired by and launched by her show about the
Mary Tyler Moore
show. Thats an extraordinary achievement. She not only changed her life. She changed a lot of lives. She was there it is, she was a life changer. And she did so in the face of very, very daunting odds. I dont know of anyone who would have, i think, faced the number of difficulties she faced and the risks that she took as gallantly and as joyfully and as sweetly and here is another word, charmingly as she did. She gave us a great, great gift. None of us will ever forget her, but we will also be influenced by her forever because she changed so many lives and so
Many American
myths and customs during her lifetime and her work. She simply, she simply made us look at the world differently and once we did we never went back. I know you knew her off camera as well as on camera. Do you have a favorite clip or personal memory of her you want to share before we bid adieu to you . Im not here, im not at home. I dont remember what she said when i asked her what would you like to say when you arrive at the pearly gates. I suspect it would be very meaningful if you have it. If you do, for heavens sake. We dont have that clip, im sorry about that. James lip ton, thank you so much. Always charming to talk to you and we really appreciate it. Coming up next, if you build it, they wont come. Thats what
President Trump
hopes happens with his border walls. He takes the very first steps to turn his
Signature Campaign
promise into a reality. But first as we go to break, lets remember actress
Mary Tyler Moore
and the groundbreaking show that bore her name. But wait. Yes. Oh, hi, rhoda. Listen, can i call you back . Rhoda, i did wake you up this morning. Listen, ill call you back. The lowest prices on our hotels are always at hilton. Com. So pay less and get more only at hilton. Com. The president is also closing in on a
Supreme Court

President Trump
today, hes demanding an investigation into his own totally unsubstantiated belief that there was massive voter fraud. Up to 5 million illegal votes in the 2016 president ial election. Again, thats despite the fact that there is not one lick of evidence to back up such a claim. But lets start right now with
President Trump

Undocumented Immigrants
out of the country. Cnns diplomatic

Executive Orders
and
Executive Action
s can often be confusing and vague. Bottom line, how soon are we actually going to see changes at the border and when it comes to
Undocumented Immigrants
. President trump put it into very simple terms today, saying that starting immediately we can expect to see dramatically steppedup enforcement of immigration laws. That means deportations, that means building a wall with the border of mexico starting in a couple of months. And yes, one way or another, he says mexico will pay for it. President trump takes the first step on one of his
First Campaign
promises to build the wall. Beginning today, the
United States

President Trump

As soon as we can, as soon as we can physically do it. Couple months . I would say in months, yeah, i would say in months. Certainly planning starting immediately. Reporter its not clear where the existing money would come from to pay for the wall and congress would still need to approve any new funding to build it. Trump himself has estimated kosta round 10 billion. But todays move also means beefing up manpower on the border. 5,000 additional customs and
Border Protection

Executive Action
signed today, the president is increasing deportations of
Undocumented Immigrants
,
Tripling Resources For Enforcement
and withholding funding from socalled sanctuary cities. When local municipalities refused to turnover
Undocumented Immigrants
to federal authorities. We are going to get the bad ones out. The criminals and the drug deals and gangs and gang members and cartel leaders. The day is over where they can stay in our country and wreak havoc. Reporter it all happens on the same day a highlevel mexican delegation is here in washington meeting with trumps top advisors. United States
has the right to build a wall, even though we dont like it. But it is another thing to try to get a neighboring country to pay for the construction. We have said many times that that is unacceptable. Reporter it is interesting to see within the
Executive Order
, this new administrations new enforcement priorities. So, under the obama administration, if youre here illegally and youve been convicted of a felony, that was really the focus, people who are gang members, committed serious crimes, a string of lesser crimes but not traffic offenses, these new priorities for deportation include people not just convicted of crimes, but charged with crimes, or committed acts that could constitute a chargeable offense, or have been determined by an
Immigration Officer
to be otherwise a threat to public safety. So, you dont have to be convicted of something under these new rules to be a priority for deportation. Jake . All right,

That is, of course, because no such tangible evidence of widespread voter fraud exists according to republican and democratic
Election Officials
all across the country. It did not happen. But it is a belief of the president s, we are told so this morning he called for an investigation into the matter. This afternoon

Spicers response was to suggest that the investigation might look into other places, quote, larger states. He named two of them. California and new york. States that it might be observed voted overwhelmingly against mr. Trump. One of the items the president wants investigated according to his tweets this morning, people who are registered to vote in more than one state. Did you have any come punks about meeting with somebody like that giving him any sort of\renhanced credibility because a member of the

President Assad, the fact is that he is the president of syria. In order for any peace agreement, in order for any possibility of a viable
Piece Agreement to occur, there has to be a conversation with him. The
Syrian People will determine his outcome and what happens with their government and their future. But our focus, my focus, my commitment is on ending this war that has caused so much suffering to these
Syrian People, to these children, these families, many of whom i met on this trip. Its important for us to stay focused on doing what is in their best interest, and what is in our best interest. And doing what is necessary to make that happen. So, congressman, a military\rveteran, republican said on twitter when he heard about your visit, quote, fact finding mission, 50,000 dead, children in syria, i hope you didnt meet with their butcher assad. He has used
Chemical Weapons on his own people. You said it is going to be up to the
Syrian People. There really arent free and fair elections. What i heard walking down the streets in
Aleppo Hearing from them, they expressed happiness and joy at seeing an american walking through their streets. But they expressed a question. They said, why is it that the
United States, its allies and other countries are providing support, are providing arms to
Terrorist Groups like alqaeda, isis, who are on the ground there, raining, kid napping, torturing and killing the
Syrian People . Children, men, women, people of all ages . They asked me, why is the
United States and its allies supporting\rthese
Terrorist Groups who are destroying syria when it was alqaeda who attacked the
United States on 9 11, not syria . I didnt have an answer for them. Obviously the
United States government denies providing any sort of help to the
Terrorist Groups youre talking about. They say they provide help for the rebel groups. The reality is, jake, the reality and im glad you brought up that point because this is an often taulkd about thing by people like
Adam Kenzinger saying we have to support the moderate rebels. Every place that i went, every person that i spoke to, i asked this question to them, and without hesitation they said there are no moderate rebels. Who are these moderate rebels that people keep speaking of . Regardless of the name of these groups, the strongest fighting force on the ground in syria is alqaeda and isis. That is a fact. Theres a number of different other groups, all of them essentially are fighting alongside with or under the\rcommand of the
Strongest Group on the ground thats trying to overthrow assad. The
Syrian People recognize and they know that if
President Assad is overthrown, then alqaeda or a group like alqaeda that has been killing christians, killing people simply because of their religion, or because they wont support their terror activities, they will take charge of all of syria. This is the reality that the people of syria are facing on the ground and why they are pleading with us here in the
United States to stop supporting these
Terrorist Groups. Let the
Syrian People themselves determine their future, not the
United States, not some foreign country. And weve been showing video of your from your trip. In the minute we have left, tell us the most striking image you have from your visit to this wartorn region. Yeah, jake, you know, the destruction is very real, both on the physical buildings and the things that people have gone through, looking into their eyes\rand hearing firsthand from a girl who is now 19, but who when she was 14 years old, these rebels that people say we should continue supporting, they came and kidnapped her. They raped her multiple times. They killed her father in cold blood right in front of her and her little brother. All she is asking for, literally, is for the
United States to stop supporting these socalled rebel groups, stop supporting these terrorists so that the
Syrian People can begin to try to get back to some semblance of normalcy in their lives. Congresswoman
Tulsi Gabbert, democrat of hawaii, we appreciate your coming and telling us this story. Thanks, jake. President trump says he believes torture is an effective way to get intelligence. Will he bring back
Interrogation Tactics like
Water Boarding and worse . Senator raise your hand paul will weigh in. Plus she was a pioneer for women on television. Today we say goodbye

Secretary Of Defense general james mattis. Mattis has said torture does not work. Joining us is nor paul rand of kentucky. What is your reaction to what the president had to say about torture . You know, i was comforted about a month ago when i heard that he had a conversation with general mattis who unequivocally said that torture doesnt work. But weve also studied this. The cia detained 119 people. 39 of them were tortured and the conclusion of the
Senate Committees report was that it didnt work, but there was also something very alarming. Of the 119 people that the cia detained around the world, 26 of them were mistakenly identified. Sometimes with people who had similar names, but they detained the wrong people. I think most americans would be alarmed if 22 of the people we picked up and tortured were the wrong people. So, yeah, i think there is a real problem. One, whether it works or not, but two, if we get the wrong people, theres no due process. Theres no sort of time to say, well, lets have a trial to find out who we have here so, yeah, im alarmed by anybody that wants to go back to torture. The people in the senate who have been tortured mainly john mccain,
Dont Think Torture is a good idea. Also, its currently against the law and i hope it will remain against the law. And correct me if im wrong, you voted against cia director pompeo because he left the door open to using what is called enhanced interrogation techniques. That as well as i think the cia needs more oversight. Our
Intelligence Community has very little oversight. Theres only eight members of congress that truly know whats going on in the cia, that truly know whats going on as far as covert war around the world. And i really think that war really, unless there is extraordinary exception, should be fought with the approval of the congress and the approval of the
American People. Thats what our founding fathers\rthought. They took that power away from the president and they gave it to congress. They specifically precluded the president from going to war without the approval of congress. President trump is expected to announce some new restrictions on refugees and immigrants with visas from countries that include iraq, iran, syria, yemen, sudan, somalia and libya. You offered similar lelgt asian rejected by the senate in 2015. The efforts is to keep out islamic extremists. How do you respond to those that say this legislation will also keep out victims of islamic extremists . Christians, muslims who have been terrorized by
Terrorist Groups including children. What is your response to that criticism . I think our
National Defense does begin with protecting the border. Not only against the sort of my grants walking across the border that might be dangerous, but also those coming as refugees. And one of the things about the
Statue Of Liberty and the motto, bring us your poor and your huddled masses, when my grandparents and great\rgrandparents came to this country, you had to have a sponsor and you had to work. Many people we bring in now we immediately put in
Government Housing and really work is not the first order of business. So, i think if we are able to vet people and know that they are safe to come into the country, they ought to work and they ought to become part of america and have an american sponsor who takes care of them if they cant find a job. We have a lot of poor, lot of homeless, eye lot of people we need to take care of who are already in our country. We borrow a
Million Dollars a minute. So, we just cant take of everybody. And i think primarily here there is a
National Security risk that needs to be addressed. You released your obama care replacement plan today. What would it do with those who now have
Health Insurance because of the
Medicaid Expansion through obamacare . Well, most of the people that have gotten any kind of health care under obamacare have been through medicaid. What they did was some dishonest accounting. They said of the federal government will pay for it, the states dont have to. But in the past really the states have been a primary\rfunder of it and since states dont have a printing press, they have to make decisions based on how much money they have. But obama came in as santa claus and said, its free, its man a from heaven, here, you can have all this if i had ral government money, but there is momon i up here. So, i think we have to be humanitarian. We have to have a heart, we have to try to help our fellow man, but just borrowing more money from china to do it doesnt work. We do have to live within our means at the same time. So, i think that any kind of
Medicaid Expansion the state should say, you know what, if were going to do this, were going to have to raise taxes on everybody who lives in the state and not act as if its going to be free and were just going to get it from washington. There is no money in washington. All right, senator rand paul, always a pleasure to have you on, sir. Thanks, jake. Snow and wind and freezing temperatures and not even the president of the

Executive Order to advance major
Pipeline Projects he says will create more american jobs, one of his orders included a call to expedite
Land Permit Reviews for the did coat a access pipeline which of course has protesters braving bitter cold and snow right now. Many are from the
Standing Rock sioux tribe who say this pipeline is a
Disaster Waiting to happen to their water and to their sacred land. Cnns sara signer is live at cannonball, north dakota. Sara, you just spoke with some of the tribal leaders. They say donald trump violated the law with his
Executive Order. How so . Yeah, its interesting because they say what they think he is trying to do is violate the law. But, indeed, in his very memoranda he says as long as federal laws are followed. You have a split. There is a very harsh reaction from the tribe about this memoranda and partly because they believe that what its really trying to say is that hes going to go ahead and try\rto push this plan through that they have been fighting. I want to give you some idea of what the camp looks like now because youll remember i was here talking to you just a month ago and it looked very different. There were thousands,
Tens Of Thousands of people that were here. Now its about. 500 and its been a very subdued reaction from the folks who have been inside of this camp, jake. They have not come out in big numbers to protest this. They have not gone and had clashes with police or on the other side, the
National Guard right now. What they are doing is trying to figure out what to do next, and whether or not
President Trump or anyone in his administration wants to hear their voices or will react to their voices. And we asked dave who is the chairman of the
Standing Rock sioux tribe himself if he thinks that the president will take into account anything the protesters have been asking for or demanding. He values money. He doesnt val you people. So, hes not going to hear\ranybody when theyre talking. But if you hear chaching, hes going to turn his head. It might mess his hair up, but hes going to turn his head. Its money that drives this man and thats the scary thing for this nation. And theyre talking about it being scary and that is the theme of the day, that people are frightened about whats going to happen next and theyre not sure of their next move. But they do know one thing, jake, they are going to fight. Jake . All right, sara sideener, buckle up. Were going to come to you a lot of times over the next few weeks and months. Thanks so much. Here to talk about her life and legacy is one of the most popular tv stars of all time, henry winkler. Thanks for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you for inviting me. So, before there was the fonz, people might not know this, your
Big Break In Hollywood was appearing on the
Mary Tyler Moore show. Tell us about it. I landed on september 18th, 1973 in los angeles. Five days later, i got a fourline part on the
Mary Tyler Moore show which was at the time one of the most popular shows on all of television. And what was it like working with
Mary Tyler Moore . If you were so green and she was such an icon . Well, first of all, because she was an icon, she was very warm. And what the team that was there was very supportive. You know, she was a power house. She and her husband at the time\rgrant tinker, just dominated the
Television Landscape with
Mary Tyler Moore production. In the 70s you were an icon as she was an icon. I dont know how much you got to know her at all, but what do you think her impact was on the tv landscape at the time . Well, one thing for sure is that she had the most incredible comic timing. Before the
Mary Tyler Moore show there was the
Dick Van Dyke show on which she was a major force. And she opened the door, along with lucille ball for unbelievable comic women to come in and know that, yes, they could lead on a tv show. What do you think youre going to miss most about her as someone who knew her and also as a fan . You know, i would have to say\rthat the missing her being, of course, no longer being here on earth. But we do have the wonderfulness of all of her episodes on television and you can enjoy her wonderful sense of humor forever. Are there any episodes or any performances of hers that resonated with you . I was just thinking the other day about the episode, and this might be because im a journalist, the episode where she goes to jail to protect a source on the
Mary Tyler Moore show. You know, the idea of i just like the whole entire body of work. I dont have one episode, but every time i see these or
Dick Van Dyke or the
Mary Tyler Moore show, it is just magical. You start watching and then you\rdont stop until the end. You walk into a room, its on tv, you sit down and youre there until the end. Were showing a picture right now of her and
Dick Van Dyke. I remember watching my first few episodes of the
Dick Van Dyke show when i was a kid. Boy, she really was the hero of that show, laura petry. You know, the thing is that you cant have one without the other, you know. You have to have the ying and the yang. Her completing the circle was
Dick Van Dyke made that show magical. And, of course, everybody added in the mix. And she went on to the further iconic role, nominated for an
Academy Award in ordinary people. Henry winkler, thank you so much. A pleasure to talk to you. Thank you so much. Im sorry its under this circumstance.
