CNNW The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer May 4, 2020

Cases. Despite the rising numbers, at least 42 states around the country will be partially reopened by the end of this week. Lets begin this hour at the white house. Our chief White House Correspondent jim acosta is with us. Jim, very disturbing new numbers as the pandemic continues to grow. Reporter thats right, wolf. President trump stayed behind closed doors as the white house pushed back on an internal projection that estimates as many as 3,000 deaths per day by the end of this month. Thats much higher, nearly double what the nation is going through right now. While the white house is pushing back on that report, one source from the Coronavirus Task force says these updated projections should be taken seriously. As President Trump appeared to be raising his own estimate of the number of americans expected to die from the coronavirus, new startling internal projections were circulating inside the administration, forecasting a sharp rise in lives lost. Were going to lose anywhere from 75, 80, to 100,000 people. Thats a horrible thing. We shouldnt lose one person over this. Reporter the Trump Administration document obtained by the New York Times and confirmed by cnn estimates as many as 3,000 deaths per day by june 1. One big reason, states ending stay at home restrictions and reopening businesses. Mr. Trump had been floating lower projections in the last few days, contradicting his own health experts. Our projections have always been 1 and 200,000 american lives lost, and thats with social distancing and stay at home regulations. Reporter the white house says this data is not reflective of any of the modeling that the task force has and. But a separate model often cited by the white house is upping its projections as well, nearly double earlier estimates. The president , who has been backing governors race to go in open, has blamed china. I think they made a horrible mistake. And they didnt want to admit it. They knew they had a problem. I think they were embarrassed by the problem. Reporter other parts of the administration are hitting china as well. The department of Homeland Security drafting a report that accuses beijing of concealing the severity of the outbreak while stockpiling medical supplies. Secretary of state mike pompeo said there is growing evidence that the virus somehow originated in a lab, although parts of the Intelligence Community say its possible covid19 simply began through contact with infected animals. There is enormous evidence that thats where this began. Weve said from the beginning that this was a virus that originated in wuhan, china. Reporter even with the pandemic raging, mr. Trump found time to take a swipe at former president george w. Bush who released a video message calling on americans to come together to confront the virus in a message of unity. In the final analysis, we are not partisan combatants. Were human beings. Reporter the president complained bush didnt come to his defense during the impeachment saga, tweeting, he was nowhere to be found in speaking up against the greatest hoax in american history. At a town hall at the lincoln memorial, mr. Trump complained about the media, insisting hes been treated worst than honest abe, whom historians note was assassinated. Ive been greeted by a hostile press, the likes of which no one has ever seen. I believe i am treated worse than lincoln. Reporter even though the president and top aides touted their response to the coronavirus, the white house, were told, is trying to limit Coronavirus Task force members from congressional hearings. That means hearings featuring dr. Fauci or dr. Birx, although dr. Fauci is scheduled to appear before a Gopled Senate committee next week. He had been requested but the democraticled house and that request was denied. So the president says hes doing a spectacular job with this pandemic and the response to the pandemic, why wont they let dr. Fauci, dr. Birx and others on the task force say that on capitol hill . Theyre limiting what those doctors can say and how often they can say it at these upcoming hearings. Very interesting indeed. Jim acosta, thank you. Were hearing from California Governor Gavin Newsom that hes clearing the way for some shops in his state to reopen this story. Athena jones is working the story for us. Athena, there are big restrictions tied to these openings. Reporter hi, wolf, thats right. People across the country have been clamoring for an end to stayathome orders, eager to get outside and back to a semblance of normal life. Governor newsom announced today that real shops including clothe stores, floorists and book shops can begin to reopen on friday for Curbside Pickup. Theyll have to retain social or physical distancing. This is another example of loosening restrictions coasttocoast. In florida, restaurants and retail spaces allowed to open at 25 capacity. Elective surgeries once again allowed. Some state parks and beaches and popular exports spots like clearwater and panama city now open for at least some part of the day. Wow. Just wow. Its been great to see people just really happy to just be released. Reporter but schools, movie theaters, bars, gyms, and hair salons still shuttered. For now restrictions remain in place in the states three hardesthit counties. Being safe, smart, and step by step is the appropriate way to consider that. Reporter in georgia, this mall opening their doors. In colorado, nonessential offices can reopen today with increased cleaning and employee desks staying six feet apart while nevada began allowing Curbside Pickup at stores and expanded Outdoor Activities late last week. Everybodys kind of been respectful of giving everybody their space. Reporter in northern california, two counties are now defying the governors stay at home restrictions. If we see a large increase in hospitalizations we will certainly look to go the other direction. Reporter by the end of the week, more than 40 states will have begun lifting restrictions meant to stop the spread of the virus. This even as the picture across the country is mixed with cases rising in more states than they are falling. Its about 20 states, we see a rising number of new cases. Illinois, texas, maryland, indiana, virginia, north carolina, tennessee, have a lot enough cases on a daily basis. Reporter and the number of new cases confirmed daily remains stubbornly high at around 30,000. With the nations death toll surging past the 60,000 people he estimated just two weeks ago President Trump acknowledging the sobering reality. Were going to lose anywhere from 75, 80, to 100,000 people. Reporter even that number may be low. Our projections have always been between 100 and 240,000 american lives lost. And thats with full mitigation and us learning from each other how to social distance. Reporter in fact an influential model cited by the white house now projecting nearly 135,000 covid19 deaths in the u. S. Thats nearly double their previous estimate. And the New York Times citing an internal document reports the Trump Administration projects about 200,000 new cases per day and some 3,000 deaths a day by early june. Nearly double the current total. Were opening too early. Im being honest about that. Im not surprised at the projection. Its really based on how exponentially this virus can grow. Reporter and as warm, sunny weather brought crowds to parks in places like new york and washington, d. C. , and defiant sun seekers to beaches in california, federal Health Officials worry its all too much, too soon. There may soon be promising news on the vaccine front with Oxford University scientists predicting this fall. And the drug Company Roche saying it has emergency use authorization for its new Antibody Test that it says is nearly 100 accurate. The fda has not yet confirmed it gave emergency use authorization to the roche test. Testing is critical to reopening safely in the northeast. If you reopen too fast, then you have to stop. And nobody wants to have gone through all of this and then start just to stop again. Reporter and a little more on those new projections. The model from the university of washington cites of relaxation of stayathome orders and social distancing. Athena jones, thank you so much. Joining us, the mayor of boston, marty walsh. As you heard, mayor walsh, do you expect the daily death toll to double in boston as well . I certainly hope not. I think its hard to tell right now, looking at the numbers that came out today, privately, you know, its certainly concerning. There was a lot of different voices on the previous guests and segments you just played. For boston, and i can only speak to boston, we want to continue to move forward and practice physical and social distancing. My concern is a second surge. My concern is a rise in deaths. Weve seen our numbers pretty consistent over the last several days here. Weve had, you know, 100 to 200 new cases every day. Weve had, you know, anywhere from 10 to 20 deaths a day which generally seems the number is somewhat low for a city of 700,000 people. If the new projection is accurate, clearly our deaths will go up significantly. Massachusetts is going to go up significantly. Well have some major problems again. Lets talk about that, because youve suggested that you expect boston to surpass 10,000 confirmed cases today. Would a doubling in the death toll by early june overwhelm hospitals, emergency services, in boston . It certainly will. It will affect Emergency Rooms everywhere. I think right now, im on a call every morning, and the Hospital Capacity in boston is steady. At the Convention Center, theres 150 people there now being treated. Were seeing a little capacity in our hospitals. If the numbers spike the way theyre going to, if we lift regulations and restrictions too soon, were going to see our hospitals overwhelmed. We cant keep this up, as Governor Cuomo just mentioned. How long can we keep boston hope open, how long can we keep these additional places open, if we decide to open up our communities and our society, our Convention Center is going to want to open up. Were going to lose a lot of ground. Were going to lose a lot of opportunity here. And i think that right now is the time to double down. I know theres protests going on around the country, there was one in boston today at the statehouse. I appreciate that people are wanting to open up the economy. I want to open up the economy. I also want to save peoples lives. And i find that thats my job right now, and thats what every governor and every mayor in the United States of americas job should be right now, is saving lives and reducing the spread of the virus. But if all these modules tel are surfacing now, mayor, if theyre accurate, should stayathome orders continue another month or so . That question has already passed us, we should have been stricter earlier across the board in the United States of america. We lost that opportunity. I think that unfortunately right now, as states begin to open, people are going to have to answer to their constituencies which they start seeing death tolls go up and these folks that want to open up society quickly, quicker, and with no restrictions, they have to take a good look at whats happening in this country, were going to lose hundreds of thousands of lives here and people impacted by the coronavirus. I quite hospital cant understand it. Watching your show at night, some of the segments i see, i scratch my said, i dont know what im missing. A lot of mayors around the country, theyre worried their residents are getting very tired, understandably so, of the quarantine, the stay at home measures. Cities across the u. S. Saw large crowds in parks over the weekend, not necessarily everyone practicing good associating social distancing or wearing a mask. What are you doing in boston to enforce social distancing while still allowing people to get outside, the weather is nice, for some exercise and the fresh air . The governor put in place on friday a mandatory mask order so people have to start Wearing Masks in massachusetts. What i noticed this weekend as compared to last week at least in boston, there were large groups of people walking out there but i saw a lot better social distancing going on. I would love to see more masks on people. But i saw people being more responsible, more respectful of each other by keeping that social distancing. Again, i think if we can do that respectfully, were going to see people out, were going to see people walking on paths and in beaches and in parks and things like that. A long as they continue to practice social physical distancing, thats the way to combat this. Again, its incumbent on each individual to understand, be aware of your surroundings and making sure youre keeping yourself and your families safe and jury helpiyoure helping pe safe that way. Even the president suggested last night right now 68,000 confirmed deaths in the United States, he says that could go up to 100,000. Dr. Deborah birx says it potentially could go up to 240,000. Those are current projections right now. So this crisis is by no means over. Good luck, mayor walsh, we appreciate your joining us. Thank you very much. Up next, more on that disturbing new model that almost doubles the projected u. S. Coronavirus death count. Ill speak with the doctor who leads the institute behind the new model. Also cnns dr. Sanjay gupta is standing by live to answer your questions. And there are significant questions about the coronavirus. The situation room with wolf blitzer brought to you by the new Fitbit Charge 4. We showed it our drivers helping grocers restock their shelves. We showed it how were donating millions of meals to those in need. We showed it how we helped thousands of restaurants convert to takeout and pop up markets. And how were encouraging all americans to take out to give back. Adversity came to town. So we looked it right in the eye. And it wont be us. That blinks first. I came across sofi and it was the best decision of my life. I feel cared about as a member. Were getting a super competitive Interest Rate on our money. Were able to invest through the same exact platform. I really liked that they didnt have any hidden or extra fees. Sofi has brought me peace of mind. Truly thank you for helping me prepare for whatever the future has in store. As President Trump encourages states to reopen businesses, new model from the centers for Disease Control and prevention projects a surge in new coronavirus cases. This comes as the white house is moving to limit the ability of congress to hear from members of the white house Coronavirus Task force. Joining us now, cnn special correspondent jamie gangel and chief Political Correspondent dana bash. Dana, were learning the white house is moving to limit Coronavirus Task force members like dr. Fauci, dr. Birx, among others, from appearing before committees in the house of representatives. How important is it to hear from these experts in that kind of a forum, a different forum, lets say, than the White House Briefing room . Incredibly important. That is one of the basic functions of congress. And now that congress is back for however long they are, they want to use the benefit of actually physically being in washington to do that job. Thats one of the reasons why leaders in both parties insisted that they needed to come back despite the obvious risks of being in that building and being at work. And so for americans to hear from these very important historic individuals about where we are in time, for the record, never mind for the american people, it is really, really crucial. Now, theyre limiting it in general, we believe, that at least Anthony Fauci will still be able to testify before the republicanled senate. You know, they dont want these officials to be in front of the democraticled house, which is a whole other conversation, its ridiculous. But we should also remember that the committee that fauci will go in front of, assuming that that stays the case, is led by Lamar Alexander who is no shrinking violet, and he is not a partisan when it comes to these issues. Hell ask the right questions and hell lead a hearing that is really fair. Lets just hope that hearing goes on as planned next week. Lets hope, good point. Jamie, as that key coronavirus model sharply raises its projection to 134,000 u. S. Deaths by august 4, what stands out to you about how the president is addressing the staggering loss of life still to come as a result of this pandemic . Reporter so i think, wolf, we have to say, this is not the time to take a victory lap. And thats what the president seems to be doing every day. And hes been doing it from the beginning. First it was in control. Then there was a miracle. Now hes saying that there is a Great Success story. We are in the middle, maybe the middle, but were somewhere in the first wave. And the reality is this is not a time to be its magical thinking to be talking about it as a Success Story right now. We have almost 68,000 confirmed covid cases. That number doesnt even take into consideration cases of people who may have died but were not tested yet. And the way the preside
