The first debate of the republican primary is over but it is generating even more fireworks and fallout the day after. The top ten republican candidates squared off in prime time and well have indepth analysis throughout the next hour. Who stood out . Who didnt . Any major gaffes . Any stumbles . But we begin with highlights of some of the most memorable moments. Anyone on stage and can i see hands who is unwilling tonight to pledge your support to the eventual nominee of the
Republican Party
and pledge to not run an independent campaign against that person. [ cheers and applause ] raise your hand now if you wont make that pledge tonight. This is whats wrong. He buys and sells politicians of all stripes. They call me veto corleone because ive vetoed 2,500 separate line items in the budget. Im my own man. Youve called women you dont like fat pigs dogs slobs, and disgusting animals. Your twitterer account only rosie odonnell. Its time that we recognize the
Supreme Court
is not the supreme being and we change the policy to be prolife and protect children instead of rip up their body parts and sell them like theyre parts to a buick. If it werent for me you wouldnt even be talking about illegal immigration, chris. You wouldnt even be talking about it. I dont trust president obama with our records. I know you gave him a big hug and if you want to give him a big hug, go right ahead. Senator paul the hugs that i remember are the hugs that i gave to the families who lost their people on september 11. Its sad to think right now but probably the russian and
Chinese Government
know more about
Hillary Clintons
email server than do the member of the
United States
congress. See, i think youre on the wrong side of this if youre still arguing for single payer. I dont think you heard me. Youre having a hard time tonight. The only one to take out half of a brain although you would think if you go to washington that someone had beat me to it. Well, donald trump was certainly the wild card in that republican debate. He did not disappoint. Trumps battle with moderator megyn kelly continued on twitter long after the debate was over and it all started with this exchange. Youve called women you dont like fat pigs, dogs slobs, and disgusting animals. Your twitter account only rosie odonnell. Are [ cheers and applause ] i think the big problem this country has is being politically correct. [ cheers and applause ] ive been challenged by so many people and i dont frankly have time for total
Political Correctness
and to be honest with you, this country doesnt have time either. And honestly megyn, if you dont like it im sorry, ive been very nice to you, although i could probably maybe not be based on the way you have treated me but i wouldnt do that. Lets bring there cnn chief political analyst gloria borger. Gloria i thought the beginning of that worked for trump in a trump way. I dont want to be politically correct. But then when he went to attacking megyn kelly it makes you wonder if thats going to hurt him with women voters. Sure. Look i think people who like trump will like trump no matter what women included. But i do think that the
Republican Party
has agender issue. Remember, barack obama won women by 11 points last time. Hillary clinton, should she become the nominee, will certainly gain some womens votes by virtue of the fact that shes a woman, although women dont just vote on that but that will certainly be appealing. And donald trump has a 62 unfavorable rating with all women. Among republicans its 42 . So when he says that and then he says, you know ive been nice to you and maybe i shouldnt be and i think megyn kelly was sort of very reserved and didnt get into it with him, i think reading those remarks were offensive and i was actually kind of surprised that none of the other candidates sort of jumped in. It could have been an opportunity, i think. I think if
Carly Fiorina
have been there she might have jumped in. And i thought megyn kellys question was great. I thought she was a class act and how she responded. It didnt end there. Trump tweeted at her wow megyn kelly bombed tonight. People are going wild on twitter, funny to watch. And then he retweeted fans who referred to kelly as a bimbo. Earlier he tweeted i enjoyed the debate tonight even though the fox news trio especially megyn kelly was not very good or professional. I disagree with those comments. Do so i. I think they did a terrific job. Is making a situation and i get it, some of his followers will be fine with that. Totally. But there are many people like megyn kelly dont want to hear him talk to wum that way. Is he making a bad situation worse . I think one of the things you want to do at a debate like that is let the
American Public
see you as a potential president. And when youre retweeting a coat that calls an accomplished anchor lawyer and mother a bimbo, i dont think thats really president ial. So in the long run i dont think donald trump did himself any good. Again, his supporters will be his supporters. But i dont think he did himself any good. Carly fiorina, she did not make it into the prime time debate as we saw, gloria but she was hailed as the breakout star and she took swings on this and donald trump that he had with bill clinton before he got into the race. Listen to this. Well i dont know. I didnt get a phone call from bill clinton before i jumped in the race. Did any of you get a phone call from bill clinton . I didnt. Maybe its because i hadnt given money to the foundation or donated to his wifes senate campaign. Hillary clinton lies about benghazi. She lies about emails. She is still defending planned parenthood and she is still her partys frontrunner. We need a nominee who is going to throw every punch, not pull punches and someone who cannot stumble before he even gets into the ring. What does that performance do for
Carly Fiorina
. Its very good for her. Look shes fearless. Shes precise in her attacks. She has this kind of ceo fluency that where she can just has a command of the stage. And i think at that debate last night she showed she was kind of the star of that pack and, again, to our previous point about donald trump there was no other woman on the stage last night with donald trump and i guarantee you
Carly Fiorina
would have made a difference had she been there in that megyn kelly exchange. Well see if maybe shes in it in the next debate. Who know gloria borger. Thank you so much. A programming note republican frontrunner donald trump will be don lemons guest on cnn tonight. That will come your way at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. And he did, right . Donald trump stole the spotlight before even said a word. The debate started with a question about whether the candidates would rule out a
Third Party Bid
if they were not the republican nominee. Raise your hand now if you wont make that pledge tonight. Clause clause. So mr. Trump, to be clear i fully understand. The place where the rnc will give the nominee the nod. I fully understand. And that experts say an independent run would almost certainly hand the race over to democrats and likely another clinton. You cant say tonight that you can make that pledge. I cannot say i have to respect the person that if its not me the person that wins. If i do win and im leading by quite a bit thats what i want to do. I can totally make that pledge if im the nominee. I will pledge i will not run as an independent. But and i am discussing it with everybody but im talking about a lot of leverage we want to win and we will win. But i want to win as the republican. I want to run as the republican nominee. Sean spicer is
Communications Director
for the
Republican National
committee. The rnc. He joins us now from cleveland. Lets start with donald trump, sean. Is he embarrassing the
Republican Party
by standing there in the city the same city where the nominee will be coronated and saying hes not going to support that candidate if its not him . Thats not what he said brianna. He wouldnt guarantee. He didnt say he would support them he left it wide open for launching a thirdparty bid. Is that embarrassing for the
Republican Party
. Well, obviously, look id be lying if i said i didnt want all the candidates to right here right now pledge their 100 support to support our eventual nominee. We need to be united as a party. If were not a third party, it would be a huge help up to
Hillary Clinton
. I think mr. Trump understands that. So i think were going to continue to have conversations with him. I think he will support agree to support whomever the nominee is. He knows better than anyone that if you dont have a republican nominee and a
Republican Party
united that
Hillary Clinton
certainly her odds of becoming president become a lot easier. His attack and then his twitter tirade after the debate against megyn kelly. Doesnt that hurt when the party is trying to appeal to more women and youve been struggling with women compared to democrats . From a party perspective, the work we do to reach out to women, younger women, has been evident by the gains that we have made and the successes that we had in 2014. So i think individual candidates how they attempt to reach out to individuals, individual groups or democrat graphics is up to them. We as a party are going to be committed to going places and reach out to grow our party, though. How important when you see
Carly Fiorina
s performance in the earlier debate and she even made a little appearance with a soundbite that was used in the later debate how important is it having that voice which at this point is the singular female voice in this republican field . Well look i think theres 17 voices. I think carly did a phenomenal job at the early debate but part of this process is not to pick winners and losers. What weve done is allowed with cnn and fox is ensure that we have the most inclusive first two debates of any party going forward. What happened last night is exactly what was intended. Somebody can do really well someone could do not as well. They can move up they can move down. But it gives everyone that opportunity to have their voice heard and either gain or lose depending on whether or not the voters and the supporters that message resonates with them. If donald trump and i have to circle back to donald trump here sean if he does what he needs to do to get the delegates he needs, will the party will
Party Loyalists
wholeheartedly back him up if hes the nominee . Of course. I think look there were 17 candidates on stage last night. Any one of them who becomes our nominee has the full support of the rnc. Thats how it works. The voters of this country, republican activists, republican primary and caucus goers will decide who our nominee is and we at the rnc will give them the best ground digital and data operation in the history of our country and help get them to victory in 2016. No matter who the candidate is every single one of them has a vastly different and better approach than
Hillary Clinton
. Sean spicer looking like a lovely day in cleveland behind you. Its gorgeous wish you were here. Thanks brianna. That would have been quite a debate to watch in person. Thanks sean. Later on well look at the early debate. George pataki was one of the candidates on the stage. Hell join me to talk about it. Stay with us. Im gonna crack like nobodys watching and eat like i skipped lunch. Why . Because red lobsters crabfest is back. And im diving into so much crab, so many ways. Like crab lovers dream with luscious snow and king crab legs and rich crab alfredo or this snow crab bake. Who knew crab goes with everything . Whoever put crab on this salmon, thats who. With flavors like these, im almost too excited to eat hey i said almost. And now that its back get crackin while you still can. No students ever photographed mean ms. Colegrove. In one of the florida governors strongest moments, bush was asked how he will overcome the attitude that the last thing the country needs is another bush. In florida they call me jeb because i earned it. I cut taxes every year totaling 19 billion. We balanced every budget. We went from 1 billion of reserves to 9 billion of reserves. But it was tough for him going into this night with trump leading the polls. How do you think he did . This is how i think he did. Meh. He did not do well. He didnt bring his a game if he has one. All i can say is its a good thing that he raised that money before this debate. Because after this debate i think it will be harder for him to convince the republican players he is going to take it all the way. He was like oatmeal. I think it was not a good fight for him. Thin gruel, that is not a good review. Kristen, what did you think . I thought he did perfectly fine. I dont think anybody broke out of the debate last night. Fine like okay . I think hes shaking the rust off. This is his first time being on the

He took boos inside the room that came up around the common core topic and turned it into applause by the end. So he did what he needed to. I dont think he goes down that much in the polls. I think we move on to the next debate. All right. Lets talk about his former colleague senator marco rubio of florida as he pulls out this zinger comparing

Chris Christie and kentucky senator rand paul slammed each other over the use of government surveillance in the fight against terrorism. Watch this. I want to collect more records from terrorists but less records from innocent americans. And im proud of standing for the bill of rights and i will continue to stand for the bill of rights. Thats a completely ridiculous answer. I want to collect more records from terrorists but less records from other people. When youre sitting in a subcommittee blowing hot air about this you can say things like that. When youre responsible for protecting the lives of the
American People, what you need to do is to make sure heres the problem, you fundamentally misunderstand the bill of right. Every time you did a case you got a warrant from a judge. Im talking about searches without warrants. I dont trust president obama with our records. I know you gave him a big hug and if you want to give him a big hug again, go ahead. The hugs that i remember are the hugs gave to families who lost their people on september 11. Those are the hugs i remember. And those had nothing to do with politics. Politics. David chalian, jeff zeleny joining me now. That was wow guys watching that last night. Jeff, who did you think really came out winning that exchange . Either . I mean brianna, it sure was. Look how much information was packed in there. We learned that
Chris Christie was involved in 9 11 and the families of 9 11 he took a shot at rand paul for being a in his words a blow hard do nothing senator and then we got to the substance of it all, never mind that. About a debate that is really going on inside this
Republican Party about
Civil Liberties. I think you probably is to hand it to
Chris Christie for at least for some in that wing of the party he was very strong on protecting these surveillance programs. But, of course others in the party will have a different point of view. To the libertarians out there who believe there has been government overreach, rand paul was music to their ears. But if we werent talking so much about donald trump, in f that wasnt a bit of center stage this would be one of the central arguments going on in this campaign about these
Civil Liberties. David you saw senator paul. He was feisty. He was angry. He jumped in on other candidates questions. Check out this exchange he had with donald trump. News flash, the
Republican Partys been fighting against a sickle payer system for a decade. So i think youre on the wrong side of this if youre still arguing. I dont think you heard me. Youre having a hard time tonight. David, translate that moment for us. Just how dismissive donald trump. Was. It wasnt a great moment for rand paul. Rand paul said he wanted to mix it up. He was clearly doing that. No question about that. Back to the debate with
Chris Christie brianna, that you were talking about with jeff. That was one of the most predictable debates. These guys have been squaring off of
Civil Liberties and
National Security debate thats raging inside the
Republican Party for months for a the better part of a year now in media appearances so getting them on the stage and airing that out where they each got to sort of preach to their choir, that was a moment that i think was probably one of the more predictable ones of the evening. Certainly was. And it was fascinating to watch. I want to talk about the other candidate s candidates. You had governor kasich ben carson, former governor huckabee. They had zingers, lets listen. Thank you, megyn, i wasnt sure id be able to talk again. Social security and medicare. The money paid at consumption is paid by everybody including illegals prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, all the people freeloading off the system now. Well i havent said anything about me being the only one to do anything so let me try that. Im the only one to separate siamese twins. The only one to take out half of a brain, although you would think if you go to washington that someone had beat me to it. [ laughter ] we change the policy to be prolife and protect children instead of rip up their body parts and sell them like theyre parts to a buick. I want a
Quick Reaction from both of you. David, first, especially as we saw those zingers. Ted cruz scott walker maybe not having as memorable a moment . Scott walker seemed to disappear into the fabric on stage last night. He did not seem interested in trying to have a dominant moment. He had a good line about hick that got notice but for the most part he wasnt there. No one will say this field of candidates is without characters. Some of the that carson stuff and huckabee stuff, this is appeal. And i this we saw in the focus groups. Jeff, what did you think . I think david is right. We have such a big broad interesting, interesting field but no question that ted cruz is probably the most practiced debater on that stage from his college years. Its clear that actual debate actual trained debate style does not necessarily translate into a political debate like last night. Hes known as a good debater and im not sure he shined as much as he would have hoped . Jeff zeleny, david chalian, we appreciate it. And we turn to the kids table. Well talk live with new york governor
George Pataki about how he will try to break through this campaign noise. Stay with us for that. S under card. The top ten in the polls took part in the prime time debate. The other seven faced off in the same arena several hours earlier. Joining me now on the phone to talk about this is one of those early debate seven, former new york governor
George Pataki. Governor we saw coming out of this earlier debate there was focus on the performance of
Carly Fiorina and i wonder having been through this process now, how do you look forward to try to grab some of that spotlight and really have people talking about you so its your moment . I think she did well and i think pretty much everyone did well and i honestly think when you compare the first debate to the second there was a lot more substance. There was a lot more true discussion than what was kind of a reality show for the first half of the second debate. Basically the difference is that there are a lot of people saying theyre going to do this or that. There are not a lot who have done it and particularly in a blue state with a democratic legislature. And weve heard talk about how were going to do this or that in washington for so long and it seems like nothing happens and nothing changes. Because you cant do it by dividing and gaining partisan support. You have to do it by getting enough democrats or enough republicans to get things through. So i know i could do that and thats a message that people who want the country to
Work Together confront its problems and believe it. There is another republican in this field who has worked been elected, been reelected in a blue state, worked with democratic legislatures. That is
Chris Christie. How do you break out when you have someone that fits that category. When you look at the records of the two states during the different time frame there is isnt a comparison. I worked in new york that was basically people had lost confidence in it. One in 11 of every man, woman and child was on welfare and when i left we had the lowest unemployment rate, the lowest crime rate over 600,000 more jobs and by the way we had a million fewer people we were able to move from welfare to opportunity. So thats the record that i dont know can compare with. Certainly not when youre dealing with a legislature where you had to get democrats to support your agenda. The next debate is going to be right here on cnn. For republicans its september 16. What are you planning to do to make sure youre in the top ten . I think
American People want solutions and to bring people together. Theyre tired of talk. And they want someone who has gotten things done and can get things done across party line. You see a lot of partisan rhetoric you see a lot of things like that on the other side as well but you dont move forward as a country without solving problems. Brianna, were one america and elections can be problems but to govern successfully you have to create a consensus behind common sense solutions. Ill make that case and hopefully people will listen. If you dont make it into that top ten, do you think maybe im not going to stay in the race . No brianna its very early in the process. There are a lot of people that look good but between now and then theyll have their backgrounds checked, their records scrutinized and theyll be under the might be scope. So microscope. So far its just been this is my vision. That wont be the case forever. George
George Pataki, thank you so much for coming on, we appreciate it very much. Thank you, brianna. To learn more about joshlg pataki and all the candidate, head to over cnnpolitics. Com. Hillary Clinton going to lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck . With
Hillary Clinton i said be at my wedding and she came to my wedding. If hillary is the candidate, which i doubt, that would be a dream come true. People like
Hillary Clinton think you grow the economy by growing washington. Im the only one that leads
Hillary Clinton in five states. And, of course im talking about
Hillary Clinton. Hillary clinton was a popular subject during last nights republican debate. She is the frontrunner for democrats by far and if you listen to the debate you might think shes the only one running in the democratic contest. Joining me now from new york is congresswoman
Debbie Wasserman schultz, shes the chair of the
Democratic National committee. Thanks so much for being with us. Congresswoman. And when you look at this debate last night and
Hillary Clinton is the singular target for republicans, do you think thats part of the issue with having someone whos such a strong frontrunner in the polls right now . I think its very clear by the focus on
Hillary Clinton last night that the republicans understand what kind of appeal she has and that all of our candidates have to americans and this theres a dramatic contrast to any of the 17 republican candidates on those two stages last night. And
Hillary Clinton,
Martin Omalley jim web,
Lincoln Chafee or
Bernie Sanders and this is that our candidate is going to fight to make sure this that people have opportunities to reach the middleclass and as all you saw republicans singing off the same song sheet, a tired republican play book that takes care of the wealthiest most fortunate americans and to heck with the middleclass. But you kind of get shifted into this general election mode even before you have a nominee, right . We here in the midst of a democratic primary as well and i expect that we will go through a robust primary nominating contest as the republicans are and when we come out the other side our nominee lined up against their nominee i think there will be a is stark contrast. Look at last night. Lets start out with the beginning of that debate in which donald trump made misogynistic sexist remarks and not a single republican on that stage called him out for them criticized him. How are they appealing to women when they think of women in that way . When they dont try to say hold on a second you shouldnt say those because its not unacceptable in the
Republican Party today. Its actually where their base is. And i do want to mention that you are near where a bunch of kids are playing. Thats probably obvious to our viewers. Thats right. Cnn is hosting the first democratic debate october 13th in nevada. Five set candidates. I wonder since joe biden at this point isnt one of them has the dnc briefed him or his aides about the plans . We have actually throughout this process, been briefing and keeping up to speed potential and declared candidates for president. And we know all of our candidates were at one point a potential candidate. So yes, we briefed the
Vice President s team. He has not ruled out the possibility of running for president and hes the sitting
Vice President of the
United States of america. Of course hell be welcome to run if he wants to but he and his family have been through the most horrific tragedy that any parent can deal with and i know hes still mourning the loss of his son beau and he takes all the time he needs and i know hell reach a decision thats right for him and his family. I do want to turn now and ask you about iran. I believe you have not decided whether you are going to side with president obama on the iran deal. Senator chuck schumer, a big name last night, to come out against it. When are you are you going to decide soon where is your mind on this right now . Well im actually about to take a vacation with my family and when i return home to my district im going to spend some time talking with constituents about their concerns about the deal about their you know their view. Im going to share with them what ive learned and im continuing ive had both classified and unclassified briefings. Ive had a couple of topsecret briefings that ill be going up to washington to make sure that i receive and then ill gather all of this information. This is the most consequential decision ive made in my legislative career and its not one to make lightly. Well check in with you at the end of the august. Congresswoman man

Chuck schumer says hell oppose the deal. Schumer is in line to be the next democratic leader in the senate and says his opposition is because, quote, i believe iran will not change and under this agreement will be able to achieve its dual goals of eliminatings sanctions while obtaining its nuclear and nonnuclear power. Josh earnest weighed in moments ago saying the decision is quote, not particularly surprising to anybody here at the white house. The president continues to fiercely defend the nuclear deal with iran. He raised eyebrows at his speech on wednesday when he said that in opposing the deal republicans were making common pause with hard liners in iran. President obama sat down with our
Fareed Zakaria to justify his strong rhetoric. Take a look. In your speech at the
American University you made a comparison that irans hard line is making common cores with republican. Its come under criticism. Mitch mcconnell says even democrats who oppose the deal should be insulted. The truth is inside of iran the people most opposed to the deal are the revolutionary guard, the quds force, hard liners who are opposed to any cooperation with the international community. The reason that
Mitch Mcconnell and the rest of the folks in his caucus who oppose this jumped out and opposed it before they even read it before it was even posted is reflective of an ideological commitment not to get a deal done. And in that sense, they do have a lot in common with hard liners who are much more satisfied with the status quo. Be sure to watch president obamas full interview with
Fareed Zakaria at 10 00 a. M. Eastern. Thursday night was the last episode the daily show with jon stewart.
