in the room tonight. john had a little hick up on friday while we were on the road campaigning. thank god he is already on his way to a full recovery. we are grateful to the nurses and staff at lancaster general for our family and all the families they serve. john wants to thank every single one of you. during the hardest week of our lives and this election, you made sure we all felt so supported and so loved. there is nothing john likes more than being on the campaign trail. the time off has been hard on him. back on friday i noticed something was off. he did not want to go to the hospital. he did not want to miss the events we had planned. but i insisted and as usual i was right. [laughter] and i'm so glad i made him go for two reasons. the first is that doctors were able to act quickly and john is going to be back on his feet in no time. [applause] and the second reason is that i now have one more thing i get to hold over him. i mean, i saved his life, right? i will never let him live that down. [laughter] for those of you who do not know me, my name is gisele fetterman. the second lady of pennsylvania. or as i like to call it, -- i met john any years, three kids, and two dogs ago before he was pennsylvania's next senator. back then he was just a guy in a small steel town that helped build america and had been left behind. he moved there to teach and after two a for students were gunned down, he ran for mayor. stop the violence, bring back jobs, bring back hope. i read about the work john was doing and i was inspired. he of course fell madly in love with me. we got married and we have been working together ever since to make sure no one is left behind. i immigrated to this country with my mom, who is here. say hi, mom. [cheers and applause] i came here when i was just a kid. i was a dreamer. when my son heard that, he asked what did you dream about? i told him i dreamed about him and that was true. but also i dreamt about all of this. like so many others i found the american dream and made my life here in western pennsylvania. i found love, a wonderful family, and a place i am proud to raise my children. john and i want to make sure everyone than pennsylvania can find -- everyone in pennsylvania can find the american dream here, too. . on the surface john and i don't seem like we have a lot in common. according to the zodiac we are only 11% compatible. of course i checked because i wanted to make sure. but what connected us then and what connects us now is a shared conviction, no person should be left behind and no community should be forgotten. john has always stood out. my grandmother who we recently lost used to say he had to be made that tall because it was the only way he could fit his whole heart. but it is not just his height. his refusal to wear long pants even when i begged him, that make him different. it is not just that john looks nothing like a politician. it is because john does not act like one. at heart he is still that hard-working, scrappy small town mayor. he wants to know the people he is serving, he feels a responsibility to each and every one of them. and he fights for people like you would fight for a neighbor, like he would fight for his family. that is what makes john different and that is what makes him tough enough to fight for pennsylvania. he did it in braddock, in harrisburg, and now he's going to do the same thing in washington. [cheers and applause] i'm going to be honest with you. politics is mean. and i am not. but the truth is too many people in this commonwealth and this country are hurting. too many people feel abandoned, feel ignored. too many people think their best days are behind them. but john has a plan and a purpose to make sure pennsylvania's best days are ahead of us. he's going to fight for abortion rights. he's going to fight to raise the minimum wage. he's going to fight to protect our planet. he's going to fight to eliminate the filibuster. he's going to fight to lily -- to legalize cannabis. he's going to fight against gun violence, against inflation and corporate greed, and he's going to fight for this country to make things again the way it once did in braddock. tonight we are going to celebrate this victory because if you're in this room you made it happen. thank you.
