CSPAN Washington Journal Farhana Khera Discusses Muslims In The U.S. June 7, 2017

Can you talk about what that might possibly mean for muslims here in the United States . Guest absolutely. What we are referring to is the portland attack, and attack just over one week ago on a commuter train in portland where Jeremy Joseph christian threatened a young muslim girl and her friend , using racist epithets. Three brave men stepped forward to protect those two young girls. In the process, two of them lost their lives. The third was severely injured. By the attack, by the perpetrator. That attack on the portland train is actually a one of many attacks that we are concerned about at Muslim Advocates. Taking place over the last year, year and a half or so as ontime muslim rhetoric antimuslim rhetoric has been escalating in this country. Also perpetrated by the president himself during the others, trail and by other elected officials from time to time. Its greeting a hostile and dangerous and ryman for muslim americans. That in rhymen is a hostile and dangerous environment for muslim americans. Riding a train. That response was from the president of United States off icial account. It wasnt from the official donald trump account. He has eagerly used his own twitter account to condemn the in london but has been quiet in condemning that portland attack. That is deeply disturbing. Africanamericans have been attacked and killed as well. This is a time for leadership from federal officials including the president of United States. Host when we hear of the attacks that took place in , does thatparis what i give you some concerns as far as those in the United States . How the reaction to those International Events might affect folks at home . Guest absolutely. Especially the quick menu jerk reaction we saw on the president the quick kneejerk reaction se saw from the president cause concern. We will require leadership from our public officials, and that includes the president and senior officials, who will do the work of getting to the bottom of whoevers responsible for this attacks and also the work of keeping the country united. When we are under threat as a country, it is not time to further divide the people. Host this is for Farhana Khera. If you want to ask her questions, 2027488001 for publicans. 2027488000 for democrats. 2027488001 for republicans. 2027488002 for independents. Guest Muslim Advocates was started 10 years ago. We were very concerned about the challenges facing our country and the American Muslim Community. We have something pretty special in our country and that is the constitution and the bill of rights which allows each of us to live freely and be treated with the quality treated equally with respect and dignity. Those rights are under attack. Those rights are not self executing. It has taken generations of americans to step forward fighting to ensure that our nation is living up to its ideals. Theyre focused on protecting justice, freedom and equality for americans of all faiths. We are supported by many generous individuals across the country. Supported entirely by private donations. We so appreciated the outpouring of support from a number of americans in the last several months who join us in this mission and care deeply about the future of our country. Host even as all these events are occurring, we hear the Supreme Court may be the one that ultimately decides the fate of the president s travel ban. Give us your take on the ban and what the Supreme Court might do with it. Host the president has issued two executive orders attempting to make good on his Campaign Promise to essentially stop all muslims from entering the United States. What he calls a complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States. His First Executive order was stopped by the courts, it was a temporary hold on that first one. His team at the Justice Department went back to work and redrafted another executive order and that executive order has also been stopped by two quarts with nationwide halts. Two courts. These courts are finding that the executive orders are overreaching and they run contrary to our core values as a country and at the heart of our constitution. We dont discriminate based on faith. Government cannot treat when religion differently than another. The vast majority of the courts up in finding that the executive order, the attempt to ban muslims from entering the country is unconstitutional and its wrong. Last week, the government did file paperwork with the Supreme Court seeking the Supreme Courts review of the Fourth Circuit decision and the decision in the hawaii case a couple of months ago. That paperwork will be completed in the next week or so. Sometime this month, we are expecting to hear from the Supreme Court about whether they will take up this case at this time or whether they will allow the case to continue to proceed at the lower court level. Host first call for marianne in pittsburgh. She is calling on our republican line. Go ahead, marianne. Caller you were talking about the attack on the train in oregon. We have in our country freedom of speech. We can say whatever we want. The two gentlemen that jumped in, they were the ones that attacked him physically. Thats why he pulled out his knife. We dont have no such thing as hate speech. That is a political term. We have free speech. I think the caller has the facts wrong about what happened on the train. Have be clear yes, we First Amendment protected speech in our country, but there is a limit to that speech. You cannot yell fire in a crowded theater, you cannot engage in racial epithets in the workplace and you certainly cannot have, harass or even kill people based on your views. Only against the laws of the United States but against any sense of common decency in our country. That is what is so critical here. The speech is actually instigating people to engage in violent acts. Thats what we have seen time and time again. Earlier this week, a congressman from louisiana posted a statement on his Facebook Post calling for a holy war and calling for muslims to be killed. This isy clear not just saying im concerned about this or that or i disagree with certain tenets of the islamic faith, this is explicitly calling for people of a particular faith to be killed. Host if want to give your thoughts this morning, muslim americans, call 3. Urnal cspan. Or 2027488002 alexandria, virginia. Theyr its very sad still follow trump. Whatever trump does, they still follow him. Scary for america. Lets all remember what trump said during the campaign. Even if he shoots summit on the street, his supporters will still vote for him. They go to political rallies wearing american flexing they want their country back and all that stuff. Flags aring american they go to political rallies wearing american flags saying they want their country back and all that stuff. Its very sad for an educated society you hear people on cspan every day im in no matter what the facts are, they still support donald trump. You hear people on cspan every day, no matter what the facts are, they still support donald trump. I appreciate the callers passion. It is vitally important that our leaders from elected officials at the state and local level all the way up to the president of United States show leadership. This is a time for us to come together as americans, not to be divisive there are people really hurting in our country economically. We need everyone coming together to figure out how we address those Economic Issues and ensure everyone gets health care and working families are able to put their kids through college. These are real, serious issues. Host from miami, florida. John is next. Independent line. Caller after the attacks in portland, its important for people to keep in mind that washington politicians on both side of the ill talk about fighting hate and islamophobia, it supported that we recognize, especially on the right, the same politicians are authorizing i military strikes killing muslims every day. Surveilledople who surv their own citizens. A snakelike steve bannon or you are trying to engineer a state that suppresses muslim citizens to matter what. Guest the caller touches on an important point. What are these Law Enforcement and surveillance powers that Government Entities are using from the local level to the . Ederal level back its important for each of us as americans to be very vigilant about what those tools are. Our rights are at stake as well as our security. We need to be sure that while government is doing its job to keep us all safe come at the same time, our rights are not being infringed upon. Host republican line. Kentucky. Caller you totally mischaracterized the president s travel ban in your Opening Statement and used the puzzl yod apologize. We see all this senseless killing by islam extremists are 100 preventable. You do not have to let these people in. Theres no reason for these courts to act the way they do. I think there will be repercussions. Host can you explain how she mischaracterized the ban . Caller she said all muslims from everywhere and theres one billion muslims in the world. Six countries do not comprise one million muslims. Thats one billion muslims. Guest the president s executive order six to ban people from certain countries that are muslim majority countries. The executive order very othercuously omits countries that have been safe havens for terrorists and have been determined by the State Government to be productively christian countries. Columbia, the philippines, venezuela. Have beenies that listed by the executive order are specifically only muslim countries. The countries that have been listed represent countries where people have not perpetrated deadly attacks against americans here in the United States. The biggest terrorist attack against the United States on 9 11, 15 of those 19 hijackers were saudi nationals. Conspicuouslys not part of the executive order. Achieve even seeking to the purported purpose the president seays. S really intended to do is stop muslim immigration. They have to represent the nationality of the vast majority of muslim refugees who entered the United States in the last year. You will see that is what is really at the heart of that. It is an attempt by the president and his advisors and team to stop muslim immigration to the United States. Rollins makes this argument about the travel ban this morning in the pages of usa today. He says when mr. Obama instituted the first of his travel bans in 2011, he cited the same legislation as his predecessors. . Oes that apply in this case guest that is comparing apples with oranges, unfortunately. What happened under the obama administration, there was greater scrutiny applied to nationals of certain countries. People were not barred from entering simply because they were a national of that country. If they did want to seek a visa to enter the United States, there would be additional security reviews of the background check. Thats not what this executive order is attempting to do. Ans is attempting to put absolute bar on entry of people entering from those countries. This is sometimes lost in the public discourse. If this executive order is allowed to go into effect, it has an effect on american citizens here and home. Here at home. There are people in United States with family members who engage in business dealings were nationals of these countries. Theres a segment of the American Muslim Community that fores on religious leaders spiritual guidance and instruction and many of those spiritual leaders are nationals of those countries. Like suddenly telling catholics your priests are not allowed to enter the United States. It would be a real hurdle to the ability of catholic americans to practice their faith. That would have been to the Shia Community in the United States the president s executive order is allowed to go into effect. Host our guest previously served as the counsel for the u. S. Senate Judiciary Committee she worked for six years for senator russ feingold. President and the executive director of Muslim Advocates. Kathleen from ohio. Democrats line. Thank you for waiting. Go ahead. Caller one of the things your guests just said reminded me of loyaltythe price of after 9 11. The secretary of the treasury, paul oneill, under bush 43, that when he etarted investigating thi money asilys donations to the 9 11 terrorists oneill was shown the back door by cheney because he began to investigate the connection early on. I want to encourage people to read the 9 11 commissions report. Im not making excuses for any type of violence. Our violence in syria, supporting rebels, sending arms to rebels in syria. Report, 11 commission they talk about the anger toward our militaryd on bases in their countries and our support for israel no matter what they do. I hope people dont misinterpret what im saying that i making any excuse for violence, but can you talk about some of the reasons that islamic terrorists believe host we will let her respond. Thanks. Askt the caller is try to why particular individuals engage in terrorist acts. The reasons are very multipronged and varied. Not only from country to country, but even incident to incident. Its hard to generalize across the board. Say itorcement experts is actually not the case that religion is the driving factor for these people. The Common Thread for these people who engage in these acts of violence, they are essentially Vulnerable People who are looking for a sense of purpose in their life. And people like john miller a former cia fbi official people immersed in this have made that very clear. Its hard to make specific generalizations about it. Host elizabeth, new jersey. Muslim american. This is jose. Hello. Saysr the gentleman who hes calling for the killing of muslims hes equating himself to isis members and al qaeda. Hes no different from them. If you are muslim, you cannot be a member of isis. Theres a website called letterstobaguette. Com. Baghdad. Com. Not only if that would hean were muslim be condemned, he would be under immediate fbi investigation and placed under arrest. Religiousf scholars and imams have condemned the extent mr. Violence. There are a number of american havewhove condemned condemned the extremist attacks. There are a number of american who have condemned the violence. There are certainly people whove been very active and vocal on these issues. Host patty from pennsylvania. Caller good morning. You on asased to have a guest, but its very important to many of us that we know that muslims have been in our country for decades and decades. Many of us are good friends. We actually feel in our heartbreak for those muslims who are feeling the results of these terrible isis people. We need their help more than anything. We need to the Muslim Community to not just grouped together and hover there. We need them to actually report and let us know which ones they suspect theres a problem. As far as the president moving this order to fan the countries, its not a ban of all muslims. It just gives us a time to vet the ones that need to be here and can be here and the ones that are already here. We need their help desperately. If we can have that 90 days, we can stop and take a look and go through the possible isis members in the United States a lot better. As they come in, being highly vetted during the 90 days or after the 90 days, it will be much easier for the fbi and security to find out where the problem people are. Host thank you. Guest i think the color for her question. Thank thehink i caller for her question. Let me make it very clear isis is a death cult. It has nothing to do with islam or peaceloving people. These attacks in london just underscore this point. The perpetrators of that attack iskilling innocent people absolutely anticritical to muslim antithetical to muslim teachings. They engaged in these acts during the evening when observant muslims were in the mosques doing their evening prayers. As muslims during ramadan do. People as a sitting isis have excommunicated themselves best people associating themselves with isis have excommunicate themselves. The people who purport to use islam are no different than members of the kkk who have perverted christianity to support their activities in the past. This is absolutely analogous activities that are going on. Host Farhana Khera of Muslim Advocates. Muslimadvocates tha. Org. Think you so much. Thank you so much. Guest thank you.
