DW The Day October 11, 2019

We only barely escaped a terrible attack on the people in the senate on the knuckles and. There could have been many more victims probably because i say city if you dont see the policeman it doesnt mean the police arent there the most that we underestimate the situation can foresee everything. In this misunderstanding must ensure that we better pretend College English teachers and its. Ok to racism and antisemitism have no place in our country and. Also coming up with a turkeys president and a 2 front war yesterday he sent troops into Northern Syria today he warned the europe to butt out threatening an invasion but not with soldiers useem shrugged but if you try to describe our operation is an invasion with a cutie then well open the door still this is. 3. 6000000 migrants. Its as simple as that. To our viewers on p. B. S. In the United States and all around the world welcome we begin today on what could have been the day after a massacre prosecutors here in germany have confirmed that a 27 year old suspect in custody had planned an attack on a synagogue yesterday in the eastern town of hala yesterday was the jewish holy day of young kapoor there were between 70 and 80 people inside the synagogue and the man was armed with explosives and several weapons including a homemade rifle he fired bullets and molotov cocktails at the synagogues walked toward trying to get in but the door held Police Arrested the man as he tried to get away but not before he shot dead a man and a woman apparently in frustration the chancellor here in germany and leaders of the European Union have condemned yesterdays attack the German Government bailing to increase security at synagogues across the country our coverage continues tonight with this report on the day after a city in shock hala is grieving off to wednesdays pretend attack. Visiting the scene german president trying to to steinmeyer spoke of his horror and revulsion at the acts of a deluded right wing extremist. You can see them on all you can about history warns us but the present demands we are in the whole time so i. Will miss my we must take a stand through our relationship with the Jewish Community. Within us and with mention. Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a vigil in berlin on wednesday evening but she chose to wait until thursday to make a statement on the attack expressing her shock and sadness she promised a strong response from the state so i let you know 1st and foremost this means that the representative of the states and i am standing before you as one of them we must use all the means available to us to take actions against hatred and violence there must be no absolutely no tolerance for that get this kind of a ton of hands. On wednesday a german citizen identified as the far right extremist tried to force his way into has a synagogue around 70 people work out that that on the holiest day in the jewish calendar the attack of fired shots at the bolted door but failed to break through unable to carry out the massacre he had planned for the synagogue the attackers shot 2 other people as he fled before police were able to detain him police say they had no formal knowledge of the 27 year old he streamed his actions live on the internet and uploaded a manifesto full of anti semitic rhetoric stefan bay was taken by helicopter to the city of cars who are where the federal Public Prosecutor has taken over the investigation its called the attack an act of terrorism the suspect was carrying a large arsenal of weapons. To be a buffet. Mia he was heavily armed with multiple weapons which he appeared to have built himself with and a large quantity of explosives 4 kilograms of explosives were found in his vehicle alone buying into some magnificent. Halla is left stricken with grief but also anger that police were unable to stop an anti semitic hate crime that claimed 2 lives. Has been joins me now from the hollow where candles and flowers have been planes to remember the people who were killed yesterday. Were starting to get a more detailed picture of the suspect from yesterdays attack what we know tonight. Yeah we are i mean just to reiterate some of those facts that we heard in the piece the suspect is being referred to in the german media as stefan b. Hes a 27 year old german male essentially hes been described as a loner somebody with few friends in fact he lived a few kilometers outside of hala with his mother his father who divorced his mother he says that his son was someone who spent a lot of time on the computer he would play a lot of video games was certainly immersed in an Online Community someone had to have many friends outside of the computer we know now that he wanted to carry out a massacre we heard about those homemade weapons including 4 kilos of explosives we do believe now according to reports that he made in many of those weapons with plans that he found online and in fact part of the reason why he may have lifestream to this attack was because he wanted others to follow his example in terms of making their own weapons and perhaps carrying out more violence that way we do believe that in terms of his ideology these suspects was a white nationalists that he wanted to inflict damage on not only jews but most limbs and blacks and other minorities as well we do know a pretty good picture of who this person was because of the digital traces that he did leave so the streaming of that attack as well as the manifesto that weve heard about jewish leaders today they ripped into the police and the government for not providing Adequate Security outside of that synagogue yesterday what was the response has there been a response. Yeah thats right i mean its fairly Standard Practice to have official Police Presence outside of any german synagogue outside of any Jewish Community center in germany even jewish schools the synagogue here though apparently did not have that Police Presence there was a lone Security Guard a private Security Guard who was simply monitoring a camera we know now brian that it was simply a locked door that prevented a much larger massacre the Jewish Community speaking out in criticizing that lack of security we did hear at a press Conference Today interior minister horst as a whole for saying that there needs to be higher security and that there will be higher security making that promise at jewish synagogues and at Community Centers in germany in fact he also promised more resources to battle far right extremism already promising 100 more employees to help fight that battle here in germany it seemed like a pretty stark admission from him in fact if you listen to his words that the growing threat of far right extremism is something that germany will have to deal with and perhaps will need to take a little bit more seriously definitely a sober message today you know weve called nason force here in hala thank you. Well my 1st guest tonight was inside that synagogue in hollow during yesterdays attack Christina Feist is here with me tonight christina welcome to the day i have to say you know you impresses all by being able to talk about what happened yesterday so soon after the event how youve been holding up today. Im honestly not sure of oh thank you for having me here ive been talking about this basically all day not only with friends with people who were there but with me with family with friends that knew i was there also with journalists and it helps a lot. A lot to talk about these things because it helps me to sort of like rationalize what actually happened and i think its still hasnt really sunk in i still dont really understand every time i see near reports every time i see pictures im like wait i was there is actually happened this is not like its not a small thing its not a joke has really happened so i think its going to take a while until it really hits me but for now well what did happen to me you were there yesterday for services for young people who are you were inside the synagogue what happened this yeah exactly so i went to hala with a group from berlin for a young kid for to celebrate for the highest jewish holiday in holland with a local community and we actually met at the synagogue at like 8 30 in the morning approximately we started Service Morning service at 9 oclock and we were right in the middle of service its a fairly long Morning Service because of young people or because of the holiday and we wear out actually right in the middle of reading torah when so what i saw and heard was like one explosion followed by a smoke like a cloud of smoke that i saw through the window another explosion another cloud of smoke and then for some seconds like everyone was silent and confused because no one really understood what was happening and then all of a sudden things move super fast what happened in the me and there. I understand there was a Security Guard inside the synagogue who rushed to barricade the door were you aware of the yes so what actually happened so that Security Guard you mention is actually a member of the community too and what actually happened is that like so theres a surveillance camera outside and the strain inside so you can see whats happening on the street and the cantor who was leading the prayer he had for some reason when he turned like sort of around he had a perfect view of the screen so he saw what was happening on the street so he saw that there was an armed man outside in full gear i had i didnt see the screen so i actually was like really thanks to the cantor who had an impressive and amazing reaction who immediately understood the situation a 1000000 or so was happening look at the screen turn around and told everyone to like leave the room go to the back room and then actually go upstairs and get down on the floor stay away from the windows meanwhile other people from the community were barricaded in the front door someone else from our group was locking and barricaded in the back door i locked the middle door there were already like tables in front of that. You were helping to keep the door closed while i locked it and tables were in front of it so there was like not that much physical action to put it that way but yes its like you know you switch into that kind of mode where youre not really thinking about what exactly is happening but more like what needs to be done and what needs to be done is like to get people into a safe room and then sort of like make sure that were ok when you when you walked into the synagogue yesterday morning what we understand is there were Police Officers there yesterday with me did you did you think that there was not enough security to do that even cause your mind it did it did because we actually arrived the day before and we met at the synagogue on tuesday night too because it for is also a day of fast so we started that on tuesday night all together at the synagogue and i remember i went to the synagogue and i was like you know im used to this from berlin every synagogue has police Police Officers and from the. And i remember i was walking down the street in holland i was like well never mind whatever number this is the synagogue is where the policemen are and there were none did you ask anybody why there were any Police Officers we did and they also like what also surprised me was that there is actually a sign on the wall that says synagogue which i love that its there but its also surprising its so obvious and we asked actually i was surprised there were no policemen no obvious security and the response we got was like they apparently had the community the local manager has been trying with the police to get them to protect them in some way i dont know to let half of these officers outside at least for the holidays and apparently they have managed so far. The door now we understand weve got a theres a picture of it right here i mean the the gunman he tried to break through the door and he could not. See what goes through your mind to be that door was the one thing in between you and you and what could have been you know your last day yesterday yeah so what do you think when you see that door its i mean seeing the picture now is that so i actually walked to the synagogue this morning and i remember i saw in front of the door waiting for my friend to open another door to let me in and i remember i saw this and it hit me right then i mean thats a wooden door nothing else its a wooden door and frankly i have absolutely no idea how that saves us its a wooden door its a dream its exactly i dont i really cant grasp how a plain simple wooden door. Saved us i honestly i dont know its a miracle it really is and looking at this is like its surreal i mean there are people who say that germany now is. Is too dangerous for jewish people to walk in public with a kid on for example. What do you say about that do you feel you feel after you after yesterday do you feel that this is a dangerous place to be someone like you to be jewish. So 1st of all this is not new this is bin this is the status quo like it that it has been its been like that for years and decades this is nothing new sadly. The old story about not being like able to walk on the streets with the keep our show and i know that i know that story by heart because every friday every saturday i go to school and every friday and every saturday when i leave the premises of the synagogue and i have male friends sort of close by i check of their wearing a kippah and if they are i tell them because we all know that its just super dangerous to leave this in the premises of the synagogue wearing a keep out in the open so that is one response to that question the other responses like of course is dangerous here. Its dangerous. To sort of live openly as a jew i dont wear a keep i dont wear star of david so im like im not obvious im ok also i refuse to be scared thats another another perspective but of course its dangerous and everyone knows but nothings happening well youre definitely a courageous person for coming in to talk about it and sharing so much with this too especially so soon after the event Christina Feist christine thank you very much its really important to hear what you have to say thank you thank you thank you. Now the kurds are fighting for the land just so you understand theyre fighting for their land and as somebody wrote in a very very powerful article today. They didnt help us in the 2nd world war they didnt help us with no normandy as an example they mention names of different battles they were there but theyre there to help us with their land and thats a different thing. D. Day and the kurds in Northern Syria what you just heard was the u. S. President today attempting to justify his decision to withdraw u. S. Forces from Northern Syria that decision opened the way for turkey which has long wanted to rid the border area of the kurds it appears that is exactly what is now happening on the 2nd day of turkeys military operation there are reports of thousands of people fleeing their homes the death toll we understand has surpassed 100. 00 the u. S. President has again threatened to obliterate the turkish economy if this campaign in Northern Syria goes quote off limits what does that mean. Want to discuss that and a lot more tonight im joined now by daniel baer then was u. S. Ambassador to the o. S. C. E. Under president obama he was also the Deputy Assistant secretary of state stand is in denver in the state of colorado where he is now running for the u. S. Senate dan its good to have you on the show welcome. What did you make of President Trump saying. Were basically asking what did the kurds ever do for us on d. Day. Well i mean it certainly goes down as one of the Stranger Things that he said in the in International Politics of the no more sensible than anything else that he says i would point out that President Trump didnt do anything to help it become tree that he served that he could have served in vietnam when he was drafted but you know i think its a weird thing to bring up and i dont know what made him think that it was a the right thing to bring up because were not in 194945 or in the year 2019 and President Trump has just made a terrible decision that is going to have consequences for many years to come weve heard that the pentagon was caught off guard by truck decision and now theres talk of reasserting. A u. S. Military presence in Northern Syria do you think that would even be be possible now. You know i think the military planners would have to answer that question but i think you know the fact that the pentagon was caught off guard and as were many and present trends on white house and Foreign Policy team just speaks to the fact that this president has pursued a Foreign Policy whether in this part of the world or elsewhere that is really all knee jerk responses without any kind of strategy and so this was an action without a Strategic Plan or objective and i think you know if you talk to the experts in many ways turkey didnt waste any time understanding that the president trying to given them a green light the invasion has begun its hard to put an invasion back back in the back and so you know i think the past when hes on the ground have trained changed radically in the last 72 hours you used to be the ambassador to the organization for security and cooperation in europe today the turkish president everyone he sent a threat to the e. U. If europeans dared to criticize his operation in Nort
