FBC Countdown To The Closing Bell August 6, 2013

Secret plans for the s plans for what does this purchase of the Washington Post mean for the entire news industry . Countdown to the closing bell starts right now. Double knockout liz good afternoon, i am liz claman and it is the last hour of trading. A glitch in trading that we want to tell you about. Global markets it is not yet known and last time we had a Technical Glitch on march 23, it has the part of the ipo. And cbs calling Time Warner Cable a bluff on their offer of a sham. Time warner cable has proposed is to return the cable. But only as an a la carte operation and offering. We are seeing hat done about two full Percentage Points newspaper ads making sure that people understand the position gold dropping 19. 60 to 1000 to 82. It is just slightly above that right now. We are talking about this program. We just dont know where to go at this point. We are accounting for 86 points. Ibm is pulling the dow jones down. Part of it is the downgrade that you just mentioned. They are saying that the stock fell as low as 175. They are much closer of the 52 week low than the 52 week high. Liz how far is try carl icahn going to take this fight . And plans for the company, no one has really pushed him yet. Plus, icon versus billionaires. The battle over herbalife. Of course he is sure the state, this is getting very interesting here. Lets get right to the floor show. So lets talk about this. Whether its anything having to do with this tapering or whether it is just the market refreshing. He said, come on, you know better than that, it is really people just taking profits. [laughter] yesterday we spoke and i said that they are tired. They are taking the profits and they just look a little tired. I think that ibm announced that they were sending people on vacation and cutting their pay. I mean, it was a pretty negative downgrade. Ibm used to be the apple. The apple of this industry. Liz again we have been hitting fresh 13 year highs on the nasdaq and records over and over again. We understand that as we inch closer, when we see a lot of participants coming back into the market, what you expect to see here . If this accelerates, we are going to have a potential issue. On the other hand we are getting a little over 1 . These are levels that are not worrisome. It is still around 13. Im not going to be really concerned unless we see these bonds. They are not really reacting at all. Liz again, we have to look at the housing markets at the end. Investor sentiment is strong. The closing bell ringing and just about 53 minutes. The Washington Post, we will have your update. The owner has a stake in there and, you know, you name it, you have big names when it comes to this. The Washington Post, just why do these billionaires want to be newspaper barons and what does it mean for traditional old media . Where should investors look for opportunities in the socalled s. T. E. M. Industry . We have a fox business exclusive with the ceo of mgm resorts international. The official nhl. You name it, its all coming back when we come back. Join us at projectluna. Com you are gonna need a wingman. And with my cash back, you are money. Forget him. My Airline Miles will take your game worldwide. What im really looking for is i got two words for you rewards. Theres got to be better cards than this. [ male announcer ] theres a better way with creditcards. Com. Compare hundreds of cards from all the major banks to find the one thats right for you. Its simple. Search, compare, and apply at creditcards. Com. First rounds on me. Liz another big bet on newspapers. Amazons money for the Washington Post . Jeff bezos making it that . We will have the details. Making a big bet on newspapers. One furcal, warren buffett, rupert murdoch, news corporations who have been busy. If they buy anything cheap enough, you will do well at some point. Or are they buying for clouts . Also warren buffett, the Washington Post, he just bought Something Like 25 smaller papers and he knows value. He buys cheap and he sells high and newspapers have probably never been cheaper. They lost the entire stake in that deal. Inside, the l. A. Times. An object of desire forward david guessing order ron burkle. The l. A. Times is kind of a liberal hollywood publication. It was very conservative decades ago. At the new york the new york u have the mexican billionaire, one of the richest in the world. Still owns a stake in the company. Some say maybe even mayor bloomberg will be interested in buying the New York Times after he leaves office. You have to wonder what the future of that paper is. They just want to sell out and we will see what happens. It happened in the case of the wall street journal. Now, for jeff bezos, down 40 in a decade. Earnings of 53 million. Revenue down 30 in a decade. I think that jeff bezos is fascinated by fixing newspapers for what he did for kendall and ebooks. He is excited about that, but you dont pick a fight with a guy that buys ink by the barrel. This is a powerful voice in washington. And he just bought this powerful voice. Liz he sure did. What did you think about Donald Graham and everyone knows . I think that they were probably or five what happened tuesday. They sold it to the harman empire and then they end up merging. The Washington Post talked about this guy and his personal decency as if they are entrusting it to a good guy. Tonight on cavuto at 8 00 p. M. Eastern, do not miss neil cavuto talking to the always interesting tycoon about his experience investing in newspapers. Sam zell. He will talk about that and so much more with neil cavuto tonight. And the battle over herbalife heating up. Another billionaire once the securities and Exchange Commission to investigate the company. Charlie gasparino has investigated. Is there really a case . Reporter i do want to ask one thing about the Washington Post. I am trained to say all this stuff. What i can tell you is the sec is looking into the claims that there is some sort of a stock manipulation. He is claiming that they are all colluding, talking to each other, looking to squeeze this, for all the shares and at some point, you know, make it impossible for me to borrow my shares, to keep this going. We started his claim. I will tell you that this is what other people will tell you because this is on my twitter page and it is going nuts. We do know that looking at this which started from the beginning, others would say this guy is a master of stock manipulation. He alerts a reporters and he says im going to give a speech today on herbalife. Maybe one reporter in particular. Its a pyramid scheme, the stock gets crushed, the company is unprepared for it. And then it scrambles to respond. And finally they fight back. Liz there is breaking news. The department of justice is suing the banc of america. As for defrauding investors in connection with the sale of over 850 million in Residential Mortgage backed securities. Reporter we should point out that bank of america issued a statement, a public release early or late last week, which said that they were about to be sued it was kind of the affirmation of that. The stock is not moving much. Whats interesting is the crisis related issues that are now starting to see the governments government stepping up and holding them accountable. We still avent seen a major figure being held accountable at this time. One thing was i have always kicked myself in the rear for this. You know, i was worried about going to washington and my wife didnt want to go there. They were losing circulation and i always kicked myself in the rear end thinking what if i went down there. I spoke with bob woodward yesterday he made one of the best decisions. The Washington Post is still a big newspaper. 500,000 and its not a powerful institution as it once was. That is the difference when they say that its powerful, they are not powerful by political. Going to this story. Because we do have this speaking in an interview with carl icahn at the top of the hour. But im telling you, back during this pyramid scheme they went in there and handed them a map and a flashlight. And what does it take for someone to look up quickly . Well, they dont want to screw it up like they did with medoc. Remember why he did this and we were the first. One of his Fund Managers held these meetings saying that he is now going wrong. What he is saying is when you bring people in concert, you should be alerting investors that there is much more than just this view and a more of a bunch of people colluding together. But joining together and that necessitates a filing for the public knows. So he is talking about this and they failed to file the proper paperwork. And he says, he is the master of doing this stuff. Liz he didnt mention parliament came to this. Even he specifically said that. Liz thank you, charlie. Sin city fighting back against chinas gambling problem. Fighting or working together . Can las vegas bounced back . The ceo of mgm resorts giving us their take in just a moment. Just how much would you pay to throw in the face of Alex Rodriguez for using performanceenhancing drugs. 109,000, perhaps . That is exactly how much stub hub is asking for one ticket to stand in the outfield for the very next yankees and red sox games. The first chance they are in boston. [ male announcer ] these days, a Small Business can save by sharing. Like carpools. Polly wants to know if we can pick her up. Yeah, we can make room. Yeah. [ male announcer ]. Office space. The casino diamond is bringing in gamblers in nevada. Joining us now from las vegas, jim, thank you. Las vegas starting to look healthy. It is great to see you as well. And it is. We are clearly on the road to recovery here. We have betterthanexpected results in the second quarter. More people are coming. It has been great that they spend more money. Liz everything from mandalay bay to maras, you have operations in macau. I would like to know which one which one will give the sense of what you are about . We are developing a new property in macau. The best we have done from a Design Perspective it has an atrium that will be three times the size of our blotto atrium. Luxurious dining and retail. Here in las vegas, it is obvious we are broadbased and it is all about entertainment now. Liz what you think is the important thing to look at . Pricing power when it comes to an event and tourists were coming around that event . The room rates will be doubled what they would have otherwise. Instead of a 250 a night, its a 500dollar a night. When you have 500 hotel rooms come you can see the benefits of that this is going to be the biggest fight since i lived here. We have the biggest beneficiary that goes to the high rollers. So the week after that we are having an i heart radio radio festival. Liz getting to the city center that you have. A joint venture project. What you look at as the ending there. Is it something that you would monetize or sell off your position in a . What would happen with the city center as it pertains to mgm grand . Well, we had so many challenges there. We had residential that no one wanted to buy in 2010. We had crystals which opened as a retail environment and the hotel market that fell apart. And all of those challenges that have frankly been resolved. We have sold more residential than any year and we are actually having an asset now instead of a liability. The hotel is actually making money and crystals is having a record year this year as a retail luxury. I think the ending they are is talking from our side we know that it is only getting better. Liz s stock is up, so congratulations on that. It has been a nice year for you guys. Keep us posted. The site is going well and youre going to have to room. Thank you so much. Thank you for joining us. Jim murren, the ceo of mgm. Countdown to the closing bell. The disney blockbuster that bond. We have the verbal battle between George Clooney and the highstakes scuffle over the future of sony. Movie business versus big money. We have the details on the comeback. Good news for fossil and as i said, everyone has one like you. But i know that you have that with school shopping. Liz thank you, adam shapiro. Any signs of disney magic. The lone ranger joining me now to break it down. You have a 73dollar price target. So you both really like this. We have about 22 minutes before the closing bell rings. Do you buy the stock in advance if you believe the earnings are going to be there today . My expectation is that its not a table pounder into the close, but we feel strongly and i do think that youre going to get a couple of very good data points to help with expectations for longterm trajectory. They see some improved traffic and margins. Liz do you think that they will meet or beat it . I think that when you think about where the company has come from in the last several quarters, they put together some really good resolve. This quarter is going to be affecting the results. There will be a couple of things affecting the results. During the easter time, expected to be a negative factor and you have the lone ranger. Then you have these issues regarding the espn revenue deferral that weighs on the segments. I think investors are looking ahead to the next fiscal year. Liz we are seeing clips of the lone ranger. Look at despicable knee and then you move over to things like the avengers. Finding nemo, which by the way i guess abc and disney are going to be talking about finding nemo part two. The avengers, there are good opportunities in the future. If you just ignore the noise if we do see a problem with the numbers. I think you have to be practical. The lone ranger has had a streak of disney branded films. But when you look at the investments of the company has made in pixar, this is to bolster the film lineup with titles that have builtin audiences. I think youre going to see a much more robust content pipeline and that is why Something Like the lone ranger will probably losing 150 million, it is not really where investors are going to be putting their decisions. All of the revenue that espn throws off to the book. Launching this month, they have made no secret of the fact that they want to take over and supersede espn. You guys talk about that when youre talking in meetings about what has happened at espn . Guest on the sports marketplace is getting a lot more competitive. That is where the companies are generating this revenue. Having said that we are talking about the entrenched position over the longterm. Especially well into the future, that is not to take away and we know that they are very capable and can in fact be a viable competitor. Liz okay, we cannot ignore the business. Holding up with the park business. These are opportunities as they invest more. Well throw out more cash . Some of the improvements in the west coast resorts and expansion of fantasy land, they had cruise ships, large investments, but i think that they will ultimately be accredited to the companys margin in those parks and resorts are ultimately the most was awesome asset that they have. Its great to see them raise pricing this past quarter. They have been careful about maintaining volumes and i was that was a very good statement by the company regarding their attendance. Liz stock is up dirty 2 . Historically pretty inexpensive. We will wait to see what happens. We both have a riot on the stock. Sixty minutes before the closing bell rings. George clooney. We are going to tell you how he did right after the break we are going to ask the ceo of molson coors to defend his brand against the rising craft brewers out there. Stay tuned, we are coming right back. Bottoms up liz the battles between the Hedge Fund Billionaire and the superst
