FBC The Intelligence Report With Trish Regan August 11, 2017

He got away with it for a long time between him and his family. He is not getting away with it. This is a whole new ballgame. Lets see what he does with guam. If he does something with guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobody has seen before what will happen in north korea. Trish will kim jongun listen to this latest warning . Or will this war of words escalate . We are on it for you. Plus china finally taking a position on north korea, in terms of that threat. China says it will remain neutral. Whoop he pe, if north korea attacks the United States but, if we attack first china will defend it is asian neighbor. Basically china not a whole lot of help. For the latest on the north korean threat i want to go to adam shapiro in bedminster, new jersey. Hi, adam. Reporter good afternoon to you, trish. There are allies on capitol hill, people that have been critical, like senator Lindsey Graham backing and supporting his moves. I want to read tweets the senator actually issued within the last hour. First Lindsey Graham from South Carolina said, just to be clear, President Donald Trump inherited the mess with north korea. He did not create it. Another tweet from senator graham said, in my view, giving the leader of north korea the ability to strike the United States with a nucleartipped icbm is simply unacceptable. Lindsey graham tweeting support for the president. The tweet we paid attention to before Lindsey Graham when the president issued this tweet, quote, military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should north korea act unwisely. Hopefully kim jongun will find another path. A lot of people very worried where all of this is leading. Of course secretary of defense jim mattis saying this yesterday afternoon. You can see the american effort is diplomaticallyled, it has diplomatic traction, and it is gaining diplomatic results. I want to stay right there now. The tragedy of war is well enough known. It doesnt need a characterization beyond the fact it would be catastrophic. Reporter so were waiting for what we call a pool spray, not essentially a briefing, but a chance for the reporters to ask the president questions when theyre allowed into his working space over at the golf course. This is a working vacation. This is, he will be working, a meeting attending on Workforce Development at 3 00 p. M. Secretary dehaves, general kelly, chief of staff, ivanka trump and jared kushner. They will be in on that meeting at 3 00. I think you will see some of that actually live. Back to you. Trish thank you so much, adam. Joining me right now for more analysis of the north korea situation we have former cia covert Operations Officer mike baker and Lieutenant Colonel tony shaffer. Good to have you both here on obviously very important day, very important time. Colonel shaffer when the president talks about all military options being on the table, when he says if they are to proceed forward in guam as they have threatened to do, that they will see something from the United States the likes of which no one has seen before. What does he mean . Well look, weve got war plans. The current one is 5015 which is consolidation from several others. I know from talking to senior members of the pentagon, that has been relooked, reinforced, the elements to support it are ready to go. We have lesser capabilities which are available. There is number of cyber options. There is special operations, what we you call shaping operations. These are all available as well. And as general mattis just said, the use of war would be catastrophic but the one point that the pentagon is trying to make as well as others the catastrophe starts with un, with kim jongun. He will be the one who suffers the greatest hell if you will. The chinese are well aware of our capabilities, and i think they rightly, this is more important than people recognize, them saying look, if they attack you, were going to do nothing, that is huge. We have to remember in 195253 the chinese are the ones who actually allowed, prevented General Macarthur from winning that war. So it is significant they have said that as a policy issue. Trish so are you taking issue with that . Theyre not willing to defend us here. Theyre supposed to be an ally and you think about all the trade that happens between us and china and theyre saying they will be neutral . They will not defend us . To that point i think the chinese recognize that they will lose the biggest if an Armed Conflict starts, economically and politically. By the way, trish, they moved thousands of troops on to their border because theyre worried about the North Koreans coming their way. I do believe i know it is nuanced but i think the statement is very positive. I think they will take more to help us behind the scenes then theyre letting on. Trish one hopes, one hopes. Then again we have not done all we can and should be doing when it comes to china. There is far more in the way of sanctions. We havent even scratched the sir fast. Hope is not much of a strategy in preventing nuclear conflict. I understand what tony is saying and this is enormously complicated, but the Chinese Media statement, essentially coming from the state is not good enough. Saying they will simply remain neutral in the event were attacked is not sufficient. So we need to go back to them and explain, im sure we probably already have, but we need to put them in a headlock in a room, not open that door until theyre on the same sheet of music we are regarding that. That is a very disappointing statement from my perspective. Trish it it tells me theyre on the side of north korea which we know anyway. They appreciate this instability and this buffer, if you would. Theyre on their own side. In it particular case means their allegiance is more to north korea than to us. Nobody parses words, nobody sends incremental messages better than the chinese authorities. Believe me, there are countless number of analysts right now are tearing their message apart trying to understand exactly where from within the chinese leadership it is coming from. The point being, when we look at again, setting aside all the verbiage and fire and fury, lock and loaded, all the angst that creates what are our actual options . Tony is right on the money. We spent years and years wargaming these various scenarios and trying to understand what happens when this spins up. Nobody out there should be anxious over the fact we havent thought this through. This thing has been thought through. Trish we thought it through, and doesnt seem any out comes, colonel shaffer are any that we really want. Walk us through the outcomes. Mike is completely correct regarding the nuance and he is correct we have been studying this. We have options, i started working with this when jim woolsey was director of cia. President bush had to brief woolsey on one of my operations. I cant go into a lot of specifics for obvious reasons, but let me say this to cover it all, there is lack of political will to allow military and cia to do what they could prevent the program or slow the program down because the idea was the policy was, from the 94 framework that president clinton signed on was appeasement. This is why everybody is is so disoriented by President Trump saying enough. We will no longer appease. That is why now 5015, other plans which have been put in place are looked at because there are elements you can execute well before we go to war and that is what well look at doing. Trish different times. Mike, good to see you here. Colonel shaffer. Thank you. Trish here is the thoughts on the north korean threat, republican congressman ron desantis from florida. Good to see you. What do you recommend we do . I think the president is right to say this policy the last 20 years has failed. Strategic patience what obama called their policy was basically an appeasement strategy. Sus san rice took to the the New York Times opinion pages to say we can live with nuclear kim jongun. That was their policy the whole time. That was irresponsible. The president is right to take this head on. It is trish i want to get back to that. If people arent familiar with it, in the New York Times, susan rice indeed said we can basically live with Nuclear North Korea and do so just as we lived with a nuclear soviet union. My point only would be, i think you agree with this, why should we . Why should we settle for that when this is something that can be fixed, should be fixed albeit, it is not pretty right now . Well, and the soviet union mutually assured destruction what really kept the cold war in check. The soviets you knew if they attacked us, we would attack them back an it really wasnt worth it. Kim jongun, look, this is a young, plump immature kid. Trish youre being died with plump. He is only there because of accident of birth. His family has run the country like a prison for decades and so yes if he rationally apprised everything he wouldnt want to attack the United States because that would be end of his regime as secretary mattis and president have said. I dont know we want to assume that he sees all this the way that you or i would see it. So he may not be approaching this in the same way that a rational actor would. And so basically if youre saying live with kim jongun having Nuclear Weapons, youre basically saying that this is a rational guy and i dont think we have enough information about this guy to say he is rational. Trish you run the risk, congressman, of being held hostage by the likes of kim jongun Going Forward. Any future issue, if he is not stable and he has nuclear power, an can point those things right at us, and take one of our cities out, then, he has a lot of leverage. Why are we going to allow anybody like that to get any kind of leverage at all . Well that is not good for Americas National security, youre right and understand whatever happens with north korea, if hes allowed to continue on this path then you got to look at other countries like iran which the iran deal is basically the north korea deal of 20132014. That is the same thing. Were be in the same position the next decade. Trish president town thought you could deal with north korea and get them to dismantle their program if you just were nice and all were getting along. The same thing with iran. Yet you add, in iran, the religious component to this. It makes it all the more scary. You know congressman, this sort of appeasement mentality learned through history, it doesnt work. Youre exactly right to point about iran we may or may not be able to deter kim jongun using conventional deterrents. Iran, given that mutuallyassured destruction may be an inducement for them, not a deterrent given their apocalyptic religious viewpoints, they having those Nuclear Weapons i think would represent a more significant threat. Trish what would you recommend we do . I think we should support the president , support secretary mattis, support the diplomatic efforts that are undertaken. Understand, let them know congress has their back, were speaking with one voice on this. Trish as country, right . This is what bothers me because so many members of the left now are out pointing fingers and theyre saying that our president is being bombast i can or irresponsible or just a crazy man himself for saying some of the things that he has said. I would point out that these are things that need to be said. These are things somewhat obvious, right . We are the biggest military might in the world, but it is important that this man, kim jongun, remember that. In terms of the lack of unification, as a country, how much of a problem is that going to be as we try to deal with north korea . Well its a problem especially because the last 20 years have been irresponsible. I mean, and you did have rhetoric flown around in the past but the bottom line is the policy had failed. So i think it would be irresponsible to could continue doing what the previous administrations have done. So this president is trying, the administrations trying. Trish change things up. A policy that can actually work. Lets give them a chance to succeed. Trish congressman desantis, thank you very much. Thank you. Liberty stands with you™ Liberty Mutual insurance. Trish President Trump says he does note intend to fire special Counsel Robert Mueller as he investigates russian meddling in the 2016 election. Mueller and his team of lawyers, were asking whether or not he is playing fair here. Lets start about the beginning. You have lawyers that have conflicts of their own. Many donated to democrats. Many of them donated to Hillary Clintons president ial campaign. And the judge overseeing the grand jury . She was appointed by the Obama Administration and has ties to former attorney general loretta lynch. My next guest says even the grand jury process has he devolved into a onesided farce that only favors the prosecution. Fox news anchor, former defense attorney greg yachter joins me now. Gregg, give me your reaction to Paul Manafort, news that the fbi raided his home. It may have nothing whatsoever to do with President Trump and any links with russia. It may be entirely the personal finances of Paul Manafort and his businesses and Real Estate Holdings and relationships with foreign governments as a Foreign Agent that predate President Trump. That kind of seems to be where its headed quite honestly. He was only on the campaign for four months and his job was very narrow, gather together the delegates for the convention. Then he left the campaign. So im not sure there is any connection between trump and manafort in a meaningful way. Trish muellers team, we talked about this before, it feels as though he has stacked the deck with players that are very antitrump or at least, we should say prohillary and prod nc. Sure. 14 lawyers, eight of them donated to democrats including Hillary Clinton the three quite generously to the Hillary Campaign itself. One actually represented the clinton foundation. You have got zero lawyers who have donated to republicans. So that seems to be inherently unfair and stacked. Then Robert Mueller picks of all venues, that venue which is most hostile to President Trump to convene the grand jury, that is washington, d. C. , where the president received a scant 4 of the vote. Hillary got 93 . Trish isnt that typical though if youre convening grand jury . No. Trish dont you do it in the place easiest for, in this case for Robert Mueller . Its a federal investigation. So you dont have to limit it to where the president may reside. There are great many other people who reside in maryland and virginia. There was already a grand jury seated in alexandria, virginia, for part of this case, the Michael Flynn case. Why not choose that one to at least have some bipartisanship on the part of the grand jurors. Trish he is also trying to do what is easiest for him. He is out there to prove a case, right . He has to prove a crime. And you would think about the incentives of just that alone, right . People who might consider himself having failed if he is not successful in proving something and this is the problem with the special counsel statute, and the directive given to mueller, by rod rosenstein, his boss, was unlimited, unfettered discretion and latitude. It wasnt just any links between russia and the trump manycampaign. There was a third line that says and any other matter. That is abusive, it is excessive. This is what happens. You know, special counsels become so invested in their staff and amount of money they put in and amount of time, you know, they feel like they have to have something to show for it. They often go off
