The caravan of Central American migrants on the mind of President Trump using nafta as a lever to try to get mexico to stop the flow of migrants through their country and into the United States. Negotiators said to be close to a deal on nafta. The president letting it be known that the whole thing could hinge on whether mexico intervenes and turns around the group of people. People coming across mexico and heading to our border had better be stopped before it gets there. Cash cow nafta is in play as is foreign aid to honduras and countries that allow this to happen. Congress must act now. The president is calling on congress to pass tough new measures to toughen up immigration including tightening up laws to make amnesty claims more difficult. It is believed a lot of these migrants will claim amnesty when they get to the United States saying theyll be persecuted if they go back home and end protections for children arriving without parents to allow them to be more easily sent back to the country of origin and families detained longer while their cases are adjudicated. President trump has complained about this policy of catch and release which allows some people to sort of disappear into American Society rather than ever showing up for their immigration hearing. The president driving home that point in a tweet last night saying as ridiculous as it sounds the laws of our country continue easily allow us to send those crossing our southern border back where they came from. A whole big wasted procedure must take place. Ours are an obama joke, act congress. At the same time the department of justice is imposing new quotas on Immigration Judges to try to help clear up a huge backlog of immigration cases. Judges will now be required to complete 700 cases per year to get a satisfactory grade. Thats about three per day. The department of justice also implementing new timetables to speed up ajudd indication of immigration cases. The backlog is enormous. There are some 650,000 people awaiting adjudication in the system and only 350 judges, which means that each judge has about 2,000 cases on the docket with new cases being added every day here in america. Now the Union Representing the judges very strongly opposed to these quotas and promising theyll fight them somehow. Bill thank you, john roberts. More when we get it this morning from the north lawn. The group behind the Migrant Caravan is responding to President Trump. Theyre accusing him of trying to turn Central American refugees against each other. And they claim that they are being used as a bargaining chip with mexico. William la jeunesse joins us now from los angeles with more on that aspect of all this. William. Well, the u. S. Is trying to convince mexico to stop this caravan before it reaches the u. S. Officials on both sides dont want this mass of people hitting the border fence together. Not just because of the image of 1300 displaced migrants stuck in no mans land but the potential of humanitarian crisis in places like tijuana if the u. S. Doesnt except them. According to the Associated Press they crossed into mexico march 25 from guatemala. Theyre headed to pueblo for a legal clinic to best obtain asiel imin the u. S. And some in mexico before heading north. The problem for the u. S. Is existing law only requires Central Americans to claim a credible fear of persecution if forced to return to home. Based on that, most are put in shelters for a short period of time before being released to relatives in the u. S. In the last year and a half the u. S. Has taken in more than 250,000 Central American children and families. Yesterday on special report the mexican ambassador to the u. S. Said he understood the u. S. Position. We certainly understand the concern not only that President Trump has but people in the United States here have about immigration. And i have to say that mexico is now largely a country that receives immigrants. The group guiding this group of immigrants north offered this statement saying trump is trying to turn Central American refugees and other immigrant communities against each other and use them as a bargaining chip with mexico. In the face of this bullying and these threats of Mass Violence we continue to stand in solidarity with displaced people. So it is our understanding, heather, that some of the men have broken off from the group to take the train north. For women and children getting on its much more difficult. If they cant afford a bus or another form of transportation, they could be stuck in mexico. Mexico said theyve already attempted to send about 400 home. It is possible this will dissipate in pueblo. They may continue the trek north and could see them if two weeks if they continue. Well continue to monitor it. Thank you. Im looking at the economy. I see an election seven months away. Among those with whom you speak every day on your program, is there concern among leadership perhaps that the tax deal was a great idea and they got it done and they showed the American People they can accomplish a big piece of legislation. But are they stomping on this thing now based on the president s policy . Because of the trade story and because of these tariffs. Everybody gets it when you talk about china. China has been stealing our intellectual property. They have put an incredible amount of restrictions on American Business buying into china. If you want to sell to the 1. 3 billion people in china, you will never have an ownership stake. You will be able to at some point be a 49 owner of a joint venture. You will never have a dominant position in china. You will also be faced with is that industry one of their 10 industries deemed off limits to foreigners . We dont have any of that here. I think people understand what the president is doing with regard to china. The bigger issue is aluminum and steel tariffs that have rattled the markets.
