But those are the main discussions. Lets go to work, guys. I have to go. Thank you. Leland andrew cuomo, the governor of new york wrapping up a 45 minute news conference, talking about the need for testing to figure out exactly when the peak of the Coronavirus Infection both in new york state and new york city will happen. He thinks that it will happen in new york city faster than in new york state and warns people who go from new york city up to new york state and back that they may be bringing the disease with them and making the situation worse. With that, we welcome you to americas news headquarters from washington. Im Leland Vittert along with Jillian Turner who is down the road here, were in a bit of a separate studio situation. Gillian, good to be with you. Gillian go to be with you. Were trying out social distancing today. Well see how it goes. Health officials are really worried, ringing alarm bells about a whole new set of potential coronavirus hot spots, outside new york states, looking at new orleans, chicago and detroit. Our correspondent Steve Harrigan is outside the cdc headquarters, thats in atlanta, georgia. Hes been tracking the virus spread in realtime all weekend long. Steve, what can you tell us . Gillian, right now the cdc issued a travel advisory for three states in the northeast, new york, new jersey and connecticut, asking residents there, urging them not to travel outside of the state t for the next two weeks. This advisory comes one day after President Trump floated the idea of a possible quarantine, an enforced quarantine on those states, an idea the president later decided not to go with. In the meantime, a number of governors across the nation are doing what they can to try to make sure that people from hot spots do not enter their states. The governor of florida issuing an executive order, they set up checkpoints on some highways leading into florida, sending the National Guard to some airports. People who arrive from new york theyre making sure they do selfquarantine. And members of the federal task force say the spread around the nation from new york is real. A lot of people who could leave new york left new york. And so we immediately saw cases rising out on long island and cases rising in southern florida. What were trying to say to everyone is when this virus comes to your metro area, please stay in your metro area where your care can be provided because its spreading virus more quickly around the United States. Reporter a bit of good news out of the virus in arkansas, a tornado hit down 5 00 p. M. Saturday, destroyed part of a Shopping Mall. Ordinarily on saturday at 5 00 that Shopping Mall would have been packed. Instead, because all the stores were closed due to the virus, there were only six minor injuries from what could have been a devastating tornado. Gillian, back to you. Gillian Steve Harrigan live in atlanta, georgia. Thank you. Leland were a few hours away from President Trumps next coronavirus briefing. He along with the Coronavirus Task force will address the nation at 5 00 p. M. Eastern from the white house. Were going to head now to the north lawn where Mark Meredith is standing by with a little bit more of what weve learned about how monday might look over this weekend. Hi, mark. Reporter good afternoon. The president is backing off on the idea of a quern teen. There had quarantine. There had been political pressures from some of the governors saying this is not what they wanted to see. We have seen the president working with the governors to declare the disaster states all over the country. Since we last spoke, additional states including georgia, oregon and connecticut have been approved. Those are the states where weve seen disaster declarations approved by the white house. The governors are saying they need more help from the federal government especially as they try to get medical supplies. Theyve been competing with each ownership to get the supplies. As for the president , weve seen him on twitter active this morning, he tweeted well be doing a press Conference Today at 5 00 p. M. Here at the white house, people are working harder than ive ever seen people work. It is a beautiful thing to watch. Now, before that briefing the president is expected to speak with supply chain distributors. Weve seen the images in the last such l hell weeks as couple weeks, empty store shelves. The white house wants to make sure supplies are getting to the states, to the people that will be shopping for essentials, that theyll be there. Lets talk about the economic front. We are learning details about how the 2 trillion stimulus bill is going to work. Stimulus checks for some american, depending on income, they are expected to be made available within the next three weeks. Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin says its hard to predict how Many Americans will remain out of work as unemployment claims skyrocketed last week. Chris, its hard to predict these numbers because weve never had anything like this. Were very similar pathetic to the people who dont have jobs and thats why the president was very clear that he wanted me to work with congress on a bipartisan basis, quickly, to support those people. Reporter it appears that work is not done yet. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying there is still a lot of need out there that congress will have to address at some point but things certainly changing day by day, officials trying to keep up with the demand. Well be looking to see as Small Businesses get ready for assistance with loans later on this week. Leland. Leland some Small Businesses saying they might have problems getting the loans. Mark meredith, back to you as news warrants. Thank you. Gillian. Gillian sad update now, were learning more about a third member of new yorks finest, thats the new York Police Department nypd, has died after contracting the coronavirus. This as hundreds of others in the nypd have now begun testing positive for covid19. Jacqui heinrich is tracking the latest. Reporter gillian, many First Responders and also Health Care Workers are selfisolating from their families while they continue to work because of their ongoing exposure to coronavirus. Here in new york, more than 76,000 volunteers answered the call for more medical workers to support the Coronavirus Response as police, firefighters and. Ms are answering the record call volume. On thursday, dispatchers receiving more than 6,000 911 calls, the highest ever for individual medical incidents and nearly double the normal rate. The fdny is urging new yorkers to only call 911 if its a true emergency saying many calls theyre receiving are for people who are concerned they have coronavirus and First Responders themselves are often not protected. Right now, more than 4300 members of the nypd are out sick, nearly 700 testing positive for coronavirus. 206 members of the fdny tested positive. Yesterday, a third coronavirus death within the nypd. Everyone is afraid. Everyone is afraid. You think these Police Officers are not afraid to leave their house . You think these nurses are not afraid to go into the hospital . Theyre afraid. But something is more important than their fear. Which is their passion, their commitment for Public Service and helping others. Reporter its a similar scene across the country. The lack of personal protective equipment and staffing shortages forced smaller communities to rely on mutual aid from other towns when their First Responders fall ill. Theres also the toll of witnessing the horror this disease is bringing to communities. Just the other day, i went to see a patient, a 35yearold male, no Health Issues whatsoever, and he was dramatically sick. And it was hard to see this guy gasping for air, coughing, fever, all of the signs of covid19 and its a real reality check to say, hey, this is not just people in nursing homes. This is everybody. Reporter here in new york, there are some steps being taken to contain the spread of the virus among First Responders, both the fdny and nypd, enacting a new policy that would prohibit them from going to calls that would expose them to the virus and instead sending ems teams to the sick calls. Gillian. Gillian an important reminder, embedded within your reporting there, First Responders have been begging americans nationwide for weeks not to rely on 911 and local ers unless they think they are having truly life threatening emergencies. Thanks so much. Leland the point gillian just made is important to keep in mind. With that we bring in someone who has experience with coronavirus, both as a patient and as a medical provider, lisa murt is a nurse who contracted covid19 and is in isolation in her home in colorado. First things first, how are you feeling now . I am feeling so much better today. I started feeling better about three days ago. Leland any idea how you contracted this . You were helping to treat someone who was sick. What happened . You know, thats a really good question. Its so mysterious. I have no idea where i caught the virus. We traveled to a medical conference, we came back that was in hawaii. We came back to colorado. I went on with my normal activities of living. I watched my nephew. I saw patients in my clinic. I was asymptomatic for quite some time and then i just fell i got really sick on march 1st and then it progressively got worse. March 8th i had my husband take me to the emergency room. Leland wow. You say your clinic, so we see the beautiful pictures of you hiking in better times. Give us a sense of how isolated crestview is, has that been a help or a problem . Crestview is a really Small Community. We have anywhere from 1500 in our community and its transient because its a resort community. Its a Community Acquired illness right now, because it is a Small Community, we go to the same store. We have two stores here, we have a Health Food Store and a grocery store. We have probably five or six restaurants in town. We have three or four local bars in town. So everybody is going to the same spots. Were congregating in the same areas. Right now, its a Community Acquired illness. Its really hard. We only have about three clinics in the valley as well and one hospital. Thats about 30 miles away from crested view. Leland it makes it all the more difficult if this spreads and becomes a much bigger issue in terms of just having one hospital there. Lisa, help me understand. We hear now from nurses and doctors in new york and in los angeles to a certain extent about the lack of ppe, of masks, gowns, sterilizing equipment, face masks, et cetera. Is that something you all are talking about in these smaller Rural Communities or do you feel like youve got enough stuff . I feel like right now we have it under control but a lot of my friends are nurses at the hospital and theyre very worried about it. I just ordered some new supplies as well and its hard to get supplies from the different distributors that we have. Theyre limiting the amount of supplies that you can order. So i foresee that at some point we will run out. Weve just seen the very tip of it in our community. I think we have a lot more to come. We have a lot of sick people. The community is very tightknit. The hospitals very small. So i think were just seeing a minor bit of it right now and its going to spike. Leland scary in a Small Community that can be cut off, especially during the winter from really sort of bigtime medical care, level one trauma center, et cetera. You think about crested view, so much of the economy revolves around tourism which has ended. The ski resorts shut down in colorado. People who normally would have the busiest couple of months businesswise are shut down. Whats been the effect on your friends an neighbors there, people started to get worried . Are they counting on the stimulus to get them through . How are they feeling . People are really worried. Most of our restaurants, bars, nonessential working, theyre all shut down right now. Everybodys worried about that. Right now in our community, i can count on my hands, we have about six providers that are on isolation, that are sick at home. So were going to need doctors and nurses here to help. Right now, im on isolation. Im on day 22 of isolation because point of care Rapid Testing is so difficult to get right now and thats the biggest thing is getting providers back in the community to get our Community Healthy and safe again so we can reopen back up but its going to be a while. Its going to be a long time before that happens. Leland its stunning when you say that six providers being isolated right now, that could be a large contingent of the people who can provide medical care in a rural and Small Community. What will allow you to get back to work . You say youre feeling better. Were glad about that. Youve been isolated for 20 plus days. What has to happen before you can go back to work . So right now im on im doing the test based strategy where you have to have two negative covid19 tests 24 hours apart. I just had my first negative test that was done, that came back negative yesterday. Now i have and i waited six days for that. Tomorrow, monday, i go back and get another test and then i have to wait for that. If it was a 24 hour turnaround, that would be better. But right now were waiting from five to seven days before we get our results back which has been really difficult. Im in isolation for another week. Leland thats stunning. Even for health care providers, five to seven days. Who do you blame for that . Do you blame the labs that are processing the tests . Is there a way to do it faster . Is it simply the science isnt there . You know, its i know some people that are getting tested every 24 hours to make sure theyre not infectious or not a carrier. And other parts of the state, other parts of the country, but right now whats happening is theyre doing the testing in batch sos they might have 50 tests, theyre sending them to the lab. I dont blame it on the labs. Theyre inundated with everything. Our Public Health department is inundated. Theyre doing the best job with what they have. Its lack of Rapid Testing. The best thing we could have right now is point of care testing in the clinic, in the hospitals, so people can find out within 15 minutes to 45 minutes if they have the coronavirus, that way they can go home and isolate or go back to work. Leland abbott labs i think just got one of those improved but its got to be rolled out around the country. Lisa, god speed to you. Were glad youre feeling better and more than anything we thank you for your courage and your example, youre sitting there at home only trying to get back to work to help other people in the community. Our thoughts and prayers with you and them. Thanks, lisa. All the best. Thank you very much. And i am working from home. I set up a telemedicine clinic so i can see patients from my house and so thats been really helpful. Leland theres a reason that people who are nurses, theres a special place in all of our hearts, thanks for you and your colleagues. Thank you, maam. Right after our show, Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace talks to treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, saw a little bit of that with Mark Meredith and some of the sound bites from that. A very interesting conversation, gillian. Gillian at least 66 people at a maryland nursing home are now testing positive for the coronavirus as the state along with virginia and the District Of Columbia are seeing a major rise in infections. Lauren blanchard has more on how the virus is spreading in and around our area, the nations capitol. Reporter we are just shy of 3,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the dmv area and last night some sad news out of maryland, about an hour outside of dc. The Pleasantview Nursing Home has reported 66 confirmed coronavirus cases, more than half of its residents and in a press conference thats ongoing right now we learned at least one resident, a 90yearold man has died. Governor larry hogan who was on Fox News Sunday this morning has a grim prediction for the area. The washington metropolitan area, mayor hand, dc, virginia, quadrupled in the past week and we see that continuing to grow exponentially. We think in two weeks well be looking a lot more like new york. Reporter in the press conference they said 11 residents in the nursing home are still being hospitalized and multiple state agencies are working to protect the residents and the staff. Now, according to the Health Department day a take, here in dc data, here in dc, 342 people have tested positive, five people have died in maryland, that number jumping, 1,239 positive cases and 10 deaths. In virginia, 890 cases but they have 22 deaths. In a press release, Governor Hogan reminded people that older folks and those with Underlying Health conditions are at a higher risk. They are asking people to stay home except for essential reasons, to help stop the
