FOXNEWSW Fox Report Sunday May 27, 2018

Nation one day. Kim jongun agrees with me on this. It will happen. Republican senator roy blunt reacted to the up and down negotiations this morning, calling the developments unsurprising. Right out of the north korean play book. Were into three generations of that play book now. Act like you want to negotiate. Then come up with some outlandish view of what that negotiation means. What was probably surprising to them was the president s agreement initially to meet and then his willingness to say hey, if this is not a serious meeting i dont want to have it. I do think some things need to happen here before we meet. Hopefully they will. Mike south korean president says the north is committed to complete denuclearization, but democratic senator cautioning that the regime might see all of this as more of a pr stunt. It is a significant concession to north korea to offer a summit. Never had an opportunity to meet with an american president. Its something they have long wanted to elevate them to an equal to the United States. Mike Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent greg palkot has more from seoul. Mike, more surprises along the dmz. Maybe a breakthrough in the works regarding a possible summit involving President Trump and north Korean Leader kim jongun. Just one day after the north Korean Leader kim met with south korean president moon jaein along the dmz, the north side of the border, the state department is now confirming that u. S. And north korean officials are meeting basically at the same location to thrash out issues ahead of the proposed summit. Among those reportedly involved, the u. S. Ambassador to the philippines, the korean american is a former u. S. Ambassador to south korea, a former u. S. Nuclear negotiator with the north and on the north korean side, a powerful vice foreign minister. She is best known recently for being behind last weeks statement dubbing the Vice President pence a political dummy which for a moment at least had President Trump calling off the talks. For now they could be back on. Comments coming on sunday here from south korean president moon probably encouraging. He said in his meeting with the north Korean Leader, kim said that he is determined to hold the summit with President Trump on june 12th, committed to complete denuclearization, with some reservations, though, kim reportedly also said he still has concerns about security assurances he was getting from the United States regarding his regime and the south korean president admitted there are still differences of opinions as to what denuclearization really means. That presumably could be worked out in these talks along the dmz, said to be going on monday and tuesday as well. Theres also an advance team in singapore preparing for a possible meeting. Busy times in the region. Mike . Mike greg palkot leading us off from seoul. Thank you. Lets bring in Judith Miller Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist, and fox news contributor, great to see you. How optimistic are you that this summit will happen on or around june 12th . Im not sure were not going to have a number of different twists and turns until we get to the 12th. It might even be delayed a little bit but both leaders now seem determined to make this implausible improbable meeting happen. So i think it may happen, but then again, if President Trump decides that hes annoyed by something that kim has said, he could very well put it on hold again. I think given that we are in the middle of a psychological warfare game here, the person who goes into that meeting seeming to hold most of the cards thinks that he will emerge the victor. And i think thats what were watching. Mike the New York Times has a statement saying basically that the measured response to the cancellation and the extraordinary diplomatic scramble that followed was a strong reminder analysts said that mr. Kim not only wants a diplomatic deal with the United States, he may need one. His apparent willingness to continue diplomatic efforts does suggest that mr. Kim may be under pressure to satisfy rising expectations in north korea for economic gains and shake off the painful grip of sanctions. Your thoughts on that, judy . Well, i know thats the New York Times view. Im not sure its mine. I think this might have had a lot to do with china and south korea. Especially the South Koreans flew into a frenzy when President Trump cancelled the meeting, which delighted a lot of hawks on the american end. But president moon jaein was very very embarrassed by it since he was the kind of main stay. He was the promoter of these talks, and he suddenly had egg all over his face because the United States did not even give him a headsup on the cancellation. So he scrambled. He met with kim jongun on the border again. And once again, the talks are now on. The summit is on. Also chinas role in this is very important because china on one hand doesnt want a nuclear north korea, on the other hand, it doesnt want the americans to benefit from any kind of deal. So, you know, i think you have to watch the Power Dynamics involved here. The United States versus china. America trying to balance its relationship between china and the South Koreans and the japanese, who are also very worried about this meeting. I think the danger, Many American hawks or people who are skeptical of north korea with very good reason because they have violated every agreement they have ever signed are worried that President Trump will not be sufficiently prepared for this meeting. This was certainly also marco rubios concern which he expressed today in interviews. You know, will the president really be up to this . And do the North Koreans really want this . Which is the question senator rubio was asking. But i think that on balance, if the meeting can happen, it is a good thing. It would definitely be an achievement for President Trump as well as mr. Kim, of course, but it might lower the tensions that weve seen in the peninsula, lower the rhetoric, and start a dialogue, i dont think youre going to get a grand agreement, and if you did, i would be very skeptical the North Koreans would keep it, but this is certainly better than war, which is the past that weve which is the path that we seem to be on, and if President Trump can accomplish this, then i applaud his initiative. Mike delaware democrat senator is expressing concerns about this driving a wedge between the u. S. And our european allies. Take a listen to this. Well, i hope that we will see President Trump end up proving himself to be a deal maker, not a deal breaker. But in this instance, ive heard from the ambassadors of our european allies that they are concerned that America First is turning into america alone. Mike judy, your reaction to that . Well, i think weve seen this more with respect to the iran deal and the unilateral withdrawal from the iran deal. That is what has driven a wedge between the United States and its european allies. And even though the americans are promising the Trump Administration is promising the most severe sanctions ever, its very hard to see how they will be as severe that the sanctions which brought iran to the table were because frankly a lot of the europeans are going to resist these sanctions even though in the end a lot of their Largest Companies may have to go along. Mike one thing that got a lot of attention is when National Security advisor bolton made reference to the libya model. Heres senator jeff flake on that issue. Okay. Well we dont have that, but bottom line, what about that analogy, if you will, or the comparison between the libya model where qaddafi lost power and ultimately lost his life and what were trying to do in north korea . Well, its hardly a promoter of talks, as mr. Kim probably doesnt want to give up his 20 to 60 Nuclear Weapons in exchange for American Security guarantees only to wind up dead, like moammar qaddafi, what has to happen here if you are going to get a deal is that the north Korean Leader must believe that an American Security guarantee is worth more than his nuclear arsenal. Mike sure. Thats going to take some doing. Im not sure anyone can do that, but we dont know very much about this young man, 34 years old, how he reacts, what his motivations are, and what he really wants for his country. He says he wants economic progress, but he also says now that he has a nuclear arsenal, is he really willing to give that up to get economic progress and promise, but what he really wants is survival. Mike sure. Therefore the libyan analogy was absolutely the wrong thing to say, but it may have been part in john boltons defense of an effort to play good guy bad guy, he was the designated bad guy. I really dont know but i know it did kind of unsettle the atmosphere for a while. Mike Judith Miller thank you very much for sharing your perspective with us this evening. Thank you very much. Mike President Trump going on the offensive calling the russia investigation a witch hunt. The president tweeting who is going to give back the young and beautiful lives and others that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony russia collusion witch hunt . They journeyed down to washington, d. C. With stars in their eyes and wanting to help our nation. They went back home in tatters and his lead attorney Rudy Giuliani keeping up the drumbeat of attacks as well. The counterintelligence investigation is now over for over a year, and they werent disclosing it to anybody. Immediately that raises questions in my mind why not. I think why not because it clears the president. Then you get the comey thing which is a leak of a confidential memo, which is illegal for an fbi official to do, and that becomes the basis for appointing mueller. Im not saying mueller is illegitimate. Im saying the basis on which he was appointed is illegitimate. Ellison barber has more. The president is ta taking t twitter again. The president s personal attorney rue giuliani is still weigh the sitdown between the president and special counsel robert mueller. If he says the president is going to sit down with mueller, giuliani first needs to see fbi documents related an fbi informant. The reality is were not going to sit him down if this is a trap for perjury. And until were convinced of that, if they dont show us these documents, well, were just going to have to say no. According to a report in the washington post, in 2016, an fbi informant, a retired american professor spent months seeking out a meeting with three Trump Campaign officials. He was reportedly working with the fbi as they investigated russian interference in the 2016 election. The president claims he was a spy, put there for political reasons. Department of justice officials briefed lawmakers on thursday in two different classified meetings, both in regard to the informant. Democrats say they saw no evidence that the informant was a spy. You have a president peddling these falsehoods and you have essentially people putting out propaganda like Rudy Giuliani to further that fiction. I think it is of a size and scope probably beyond watergate just not the watergate the president is referring to. Democrats accuse the white house of playing politics with all of this. One of the classified briefings was with a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers the so called gang of eight. The other was only for a handful of republicans. Two white house officials chief of staff john kelly and the white house lawyer who deals with the russia probe emmett flood unexpectedly showed up to the briefings. Democrats said their presence was highly inappropriate. The white house says that they didnt actually attend the meetings, but they were there at the start and they made brief remarks about the president s desire for openness. Mike . This as the president of the national Border Patrol union walks back some controversial remarks after he said that the National Guards deployment to the southern border was a, quote, colossal waste of resources. We have more from our los angeles bureau. What is he saying now about those comments . Mike, brandon judd, the president of the national Border Patrol counsel told fox friends this morning that statements he made to the l. A. Times saying agents quote see no benefit to having guard troops on the border werent exactly what he meant. I was talking about the deployment of our current Border Patrol resources, and if we were deploying those resources correctly, would we actually need the National Guard . Nobody praised the president more than i did in my media that i know of for the decision to send the National Guard. Now, judd went on in thursdays article to say he was extremely excited about the troop deployment, a sentiments he echoed on fox today; mike . He still has some criticism about the way the National Guard is being used; right . Thats right. Judd says the current deployment of National Guard troops is being handled differently than Previous Border deployments and the Union President said thats led to a poor use of resources. Now a National Guard troop must be paired with a Border Patrol agent who has Law Enforcement powers. When we have the National Guard there, they have been in our lookout and observation post, they have been in our static positions, they have been in our control room, and what they do is they free up those resources that otherwise have to do those jobs to allow us to go out and patrol the border. Now, so far more than 1600 National Guard troops have deployed to the borders of arizona, california, new mexico, and texas, assisting with over 4,000 deportations, and they have also turned back more than a thousand people who are trying to penetrate our borders illegally. According to pentagon officials the number of guard troops assisting a the border could swell to 4,000 in the coming months. Mike . Mike live from our west coast newsroom, thank you very much.
