Homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says theres a devastating crisis of the border and says the United States needs to fund the wall, fix loopholes, and create a safe pathway to reunite children with their families. This Cabinet Meeting is ahead of the president s 3 00 p. M. Session with democratic and Republican Leaders here at the situation room in the white house. The president says that ice and Border Patrol will give a presentation at that meeting. Tomorrow, thats when democrats assume control of the house. They say they are going to vote on two bills tomorrow. One will fund all the close Government Agencies through september 30th. The second would fund the department of Homeland Security only, through february 8th. That would allow more time for negotiations on this issue. Democrats say they oppose any funding for a wall. To that, Sarah Huckabee sanders, the White House Press secretary, said in a statement Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a plan that will not reopen the government because it feels to secure the board and puts the needs of other countries above the needs of our own citizens. The pelosi plan is a nonstarter because it does not fund our Homeland Security or keep American Families safe from Human Trafficking, drugs, and crime. The president in his Cabinet Meeting also spoke about the u. S. Withdrawal from syria. He says the administration is fully withdrawn, and he says that other countries now must take up the fight against isis. I think this is a concerted effort on his part and on the administration a posthumous part to get something started. Harris i do want to ask the question, because i tried to ask as many republicans, both senate and house, this question so we get a full picture. Why didnt this get done before the end of the year . And you knew democrats would take over the house . Well, unfortunately it didnt get done. However, i would submit that we did our job, particularly in the house, with the republican majority. We sent a bill over to the senate that included Disaster Fund income included relief for the disasters. It also included border wall funding. That would have done it, but it got over to the senate and now Chuck Schumer in the Senate Democrats are the ones who are holding it up. So we did our job, in their the republican majority majority in the house. Spew what it sounds like it, from what you sent over to the senate, that there were some ye yeses to democrats. Why have they been all know . Thats good question preparticularly if you look at the history of this. If you look back to 2006. If you look back just five years ago when the democrats were all over this issue, they were the ones who were funding the wall. They were the ones who are funding security for the board approve the number one responsibility of the federal government is to protect our homeland. We have to secure our borders in order to do that. Everybody wants to think this is just to keep people out. Keep Illegal Immigrants out. Well, what about the drugs that are coming across that border . What about the Human Trafficking that is happening there . The gang members . All the other things going on there . I call it taking the floor when you cut in on a Cabinet Meeting video link and you talk as long as she did. She had everybodys attention, saying things like we need a wall to reduce criminal apprehension, drugs, narcotic flows. Youre saying we need to address poorlywritten laws. Thousands arrived and explained our loss on a daily basis. Now families and unaccompanied children make up nearly twothirds of those caught at the border paid thats a huge number of children. Its almost obama ask. Remember a few summers ago when we had 90,000 unaccompanied childrens coming the borders. Speaking to somebody issues that shes bringing up, is this a true crisis . Can the president acted differently if there is a crisis at the border . I would submit that it is a true crisis. If we secured the borders, if we knew that our borders secure, they would be able to get in, then they wouldnt take that risk of sending them out with coyotes or with whom ever to try and get them into this country. Thats a responsibility incumbent upon us. We need to secure our borders so that they dont put these children at risk, and we see what has happened. We have had disasters, tragedies happen. That is something we need to address as well. Harris i am specifically getting to president ial power. Because if there is an emergency of the border, there are some things with the president can do that are quite different than waiting for congress to get its act together. I will let you answer that, and ive another quick followup. I would submit that the president should do that. I would think that this president will do that, if he deems it to be a crisis. And if the secretary of Homeland Security advises him on that, i suspect he will listen. Spew one you know , ive been watching some conservatives write about this. Im concerned about the lingo with the president. You have a president who has the base, excited by the idea of a wall. We all knew because he was explaining it every time that is a wall system, they would have some places that you couldnt actually put a physical structure. He would reinforce that with personnel. I think its going to the dynamics of it could shift over the next several days, as democrats move some bills over to the senate. Mitch mcconnell has indicated hes not going to vote on any of those bills. Hes not going to vote on anything, not going to bring anything to the floor, unless the president is going to sign it. We have had democrats on the program, garamendi out of california, who says i remember when the Government Shutdown for for so long people were suffering what exactly is happening with this one . Certainly, government officials have been paid. But theres a question of it going forward. Usually in these shutdowns, they are backpaid. But a lot of people, especially in washington, live paycheck to paycheck. This also affects contractors come people who clean buildings, certainly they are not employed by the government. So they are losing paychecks. As it continues to get more embarrassing for the country, i think both sides are going to have to come to realize that when you look at the numbers we are talking about a small amount of money. Yes, its billions of dollars, but in the grand harris arent we losing more at this .
