This is where it all began, where police say a gunman shot and killed a soldier who was standing guard there. A ceremonial soldier a reservist, walked up to him and shot him in the chest. Then as the Police Reports go, the gunman entered parliament across the street and opened fire. We have many accounts from police that this was a walk across. It was described earlier today as a slow, methodical walk up to the soldier here, and then a walk from here to the Parliament Building. Im told this is about 200 yards once you make the zigzag thats necessary. There were other reports that he may have been in a car. Police are downplaying that. Officers shot the gunman dead here inside the Parliament Building, but not before there was a lot of shooting that went on. Police now say there was no shooting at the Shopping Mall. Remember we were saying earlier that up there at the centre, this Shopping Mall there were reports of it, a number of 911 calls, but it never actually happened. And another place the chateau laurier hotel, we were reporting this in the 1 00 eastern time hour there were shots fired here. There were reports of that. They got 911 calls that there were shots fired here, but police say none of that was true. As weve said so many times as news break, the first reports are many of them inaccurate. And according to police, they were today. So shootings at two places, the war memorial where the soldier was shot and killed, and then a walk to the Parliament Building where many, many rounds went off and possibly a second shooter. Thats what theyve been saying. Police say they cant rule itno. But its sounding more and more like this was one person. We say that because the only confirmed shootings go like this. Somebody got out of a car, we have a seen the car, its parked, its still, has no license plates. Walked up to this. Shot one person in the chest. Walked over there and began firing. Now thats a secure building. How did he get in there . That we dont yet know. Back on Parliament Hill a reporter captured the chaotic scene inside. So if youre like me with all the echoing you cant tell how many shots were fired and maybe cabinet members couldnt either but one cabinet member has said publicly to the police he counted at least 30 shots in the building. Well have confirmation on that at some point. At this moment its really immateri immaterial. What we have is a dead soldier and apparently, apparently a dead suspect. And it seems at least at the reporting right now, thats it. If there is a second suspect, we have no eyewitnesses to the second suspect. If there were other shooting scenes which people reported were and police checked out they no longer exist. Was things one person and could this person have been the same person who ran over two military personnel a couple of days ago and killed one of them in canada . Its possible. We have nothing on that matter confirmed. We do have this picture from inside parliament as it was all going down. Look at this. They stacked chairs up against the the door because authorities said barricade yourself in place. They were afraid there was a second gunman. They put the chairs against the door. You can see tripods from the media and such. Everything was under way at the time. It was a normal workday. People taking shelter. This comes after the other attack on monday on canadian soldiers in quebec as i mentioned. Police say a radicalized muslim as Police Describe him ran over two soldiers with his car. One of the soldiers died. Cops later shot and killed the driver. Investigators say he left facebook posts that showed he wanted to join with militants overseas. Lets bring in constable mark suesy with the police department. Is there anything more you can add to the reporting today . Is there a second suspect . Are you searching for one . Were still actively searching until we can definitely say there are no more suspects, well continue to search. That makes perfect sense. But the chateau laurier and at the mall, neither were shoot scenes despite the 911 calls, right . Despite the 911 calls after further investigation weve determined there was no shots fired at those locations. Thats great news. We know the one, the suspect in the shooting at the war memorial is has been shot and killed and we know that the soldier at the war memorial has been shot and killed. Any other injuries to report at all . My understanding maybe more injuries as far as minor injurieses from people trying to hide or running away, but nothing serious. Thats great to hear. One mp said he counted as many as 30 shots fired inside the Parliament Buildings. Whether thats true or not is a matter for a later date. All of those shots fired and yet no one hit inside parliament. Either of the Parliament Buildings as far as we know, right . As far as i know, yeah. As far as the number of shots im not sure. Whats the status on the lockdown that was in place up on Parliament Hill and in ottawa in general . Well, the immediate area around the Parliament Hill is still under lockdown until we complete the search. So were asking people to stay away from windows and rooftops and follow the advice of the security agencies that run their buildings. At one point, again, constable, with the Ottawa Police department on the line with us live, earlier there were reports and we saw video there were checkpoints leaving the area trying to make sure there were no other suspects. Checkpoints along the river that separate the two provinces. Is that still the case . Is. I believe to a lesser degree it is still the case because were not letting anyone in or out of the immediate perimeter or crime scene area. Is there any information on the suspect who is now deceased that you can share with us . No. The investigators are going to look into his background and try to figure out if and why he was doing this. I heard witnesses describe this man whos been shot and killed as a short white guy. Thats all i heard. Can you confirm that or tell us any more about him . No. I dont have any information on him. I dont even have a description of the suspect. Then theres this car that is outside Parliament Hill or somewhere on Parliament Hill which one mp described driving past this morning on the way to work. Said it was very strange to me i drove by a car with no license plate n a place you cant park and then he realized the scene. Is that car connected and do you know anything about the car . I know about the car. Its an area that were investigating to see if its connected to all this. This is a live picture of that car with no license plate and that et a no parking zone. It appears to have a lot of your attention. Is the early thinking though you cant confirm it, thats how this gunman got there and maybe there were no accomplices . Thats part of the investigation. What are your sources telling us where we are now some. Within the last few minutes a Homeland Security official provided this statement to fox news that reads in part at this time there is no specific reporting to indicate that Ongoing Events in canada pose a threat to the United States. Nevertheless, we will continue to provide relevant information to our stakeholders, thats government speak for those who are connected to Homeland Security and the broader public. Earlier today the secretary of Homeland Security jeh johnson were told was given a full briefing on the shooting with an emphasis on what may be a level of coordination with more than a single suspect, as well as the chain of events leading up to this incident. A Law Enforcement source confirmed to fox news that the fbi is helping canadian authorities in ottawa, in addition the fbi field offices have been told to raise their alert posture, given todays shooting and last week joint intelligence bulletin warning military and Law Enforcement of a spike in isis shatter calling for attacks on military and Law Enforcement personnel, but you should not draw the conclusion that those two things are connected at this point, shepard. Thats a really good point. We read a lot about this chatter that was happening in advance and it was quite the talk within intelligence circles. Do you have any specifics some. I do. Counter terrorism source tells fox news, someone familiar with the information thats being gathered, that there was, in fact, a spike in isisrelated chatter targeting canada in the five days leading up to this incident and the chatter focused specifically on canadas decision to join the coalition, including threats and this was described to uss as part of a translation that the day of reckoning is coming. In addition, there has been no claim of responsibility from any Extremist Group so far for todays shooting nor is there confirmation that a shooter or other suspects are linked to any known terrorist groups. They confiscated his passport but they said they tried to talk him out of his obsession with radical islam and they say he was actually saying that he wanted to change his ways and that he did not appear violent, but overall, they said their hands were pretty much tied. Listen to this. Its difficult to do more because we cannot arrest someone for thinking, for having radical thoughts. Its not a crime in canada. Unless we have indications, clear indication of what he was doing, it was very difficult to prevent and stop him. Fascinating. They knew who he was, they were following him, still could not stop him. Last time police had contact with ru rouleau was back on october 10th, 11 days before the attack. Ive heard police say up there, trace, this suspect, whos now dead after running over the soldier was proud. How did they know if he was proud of it if they shot and killed him . Right after he ran down those two soldiers he called 911 quickly claiming responsibility and police say that he wanted to make sure that he got credit for this attack. As you said, they did later kill him, but then isis immediately declared him a martyr. Remember it was last month that isis issued its supporters an urge to go out and kill canadian soldiers to single them out and then to, quote, run them down with your cars.
