Due to the shut down, the president writes, im sorry to inform you that your trip to brussels, egypt and afghanistan has postponed. Im sure you would agree that postponing this Public Relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that during this period would be better if you were in washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong BorderSecurity Movement to end the shut down. Obviously if youd like to make a journey flying commercial, that would be your prerogative. Fox news found out that the speaker of the house did not make that decision about security based on any information that she got from the department of Homeland Security or from the United States secret service because nobody in the congressional leadership reached out to secret service or the department of Homeland Security to say, hey, is your plan still okay for the state of the union or have you been squeezed by the shut down . In fact, the speaker of the houses office said they made the decision because the office of the speaker has been contacted by a furloughed dhs employee that expressed serious concerns that the department has insufficient Staffing Levels to sufficiently manage the security needs for the upcoming state of the Union Address. Pelosi did say that the chairman of the Homeland Security committee, betty thompson, concurred that there was a Security Risk because dhs and the secret service have been unfunded, but again, nobody from the Homeland Security committee checked with the secret service or dhs. So theyre just basically making assumptions what the security situation might be. Given the fact theres a shut down, theres been a lot of furloughs and some callouts so potentially there could be a problem. They did a 1 4 loop and this air force bus with the u. S. Capitol Police Detail has come back in front of the house side of the capitol on the plaza, which is where im standing a few feed away and a lot of the members who were on this trip scheduled to go on this trip piled off. I talked to Stephen Lynch from massachusetts, susan davis from california, House Speaker nancy pelosi is supposed to be on this trip. Typically she would go separately with her u. S. Capitol Police Detail because shes in the line of succession. But we dont know if this is just a temporary hold as they wait to figure this out or the trip is off. This bus is back at the capitol and those members piled out and went to the capitol. Shepard did anybody say anything when they came off . No. There was a group of reporters that tried to get we werent sure what they were going to do. The other thing, we wondered if nancy pelosi might come out here. Were close to her doorway. All of this information came to be very fluid. I spoke with a member who was going out to the bus to get on and had just seen the letter from the president. Indicated this isnt an excursion, which was the term that the president used in his letter. But they reminded me, they said look, he is the commanderinchief and the 89th air wing is under his command. So maybe theres a possibility that he can in fact cancel this trip. The one thing i know for sure is the capitol security officials, shep, were it was a little pandemonium. There were the furious calls between the legislative branch, the white house, the state department, the pentagon as to what they were supposed to do. Weve never seen a trip cancelled like this on the spot, and we have certainly seen instances where people were scheduled to go on the codels and they get cancelled because they need to be here for a vote. But never anything like this. Shepard what is a codel and if this wasnt a junket or excursion, what was it . Well, a codel, first of all, is short for congressional delegation. Any time you have a group of members, particularly traveling overseas, they always go by military air for security purposes. Certainly the speaker goes for military air because of her line of succession to the presidency. Were told that these were factfinding missions. They were going to afghanistan. They usually try to keep them hush hush because of security purposes. But it was the president who essentially announced the itinerary in his letter. Shepard all right. Stand by if you would, chad. Im told by a senior white house official that all codel travel by military aircraft has been postponed until after the shut down is over. Rudy guliani seeming to narrow of the parameters of there being no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. Listen to what he said. I never said there was no collusion between the campaign or between people in the campaign. Yes, you have. I have not. I said the president of the United States. Theres not a single bit of evidence the president of the United States committed the only commit to commit mere, conspiring with the russians to hack the dnc. Rudy guliani clarified his comments. He said i represent President Trump and not the campaign. There was no collusion with the president in any way shape or form. I have no idea about the thousands of people that worked on the campaign. Guliani said i cant be confident that there wasnt any collusion. Only confident because i was in the campaign at an intimate level. Nobody knew about russia.
