FOXNEWSW The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino December 27, 2018

Data report that Consumer Confidence was down by the most in three years. Index down by 8. 3 s. So that is not good news. Youre seeing tech stocks getting hammered. The very ones that led the market higher on the 1,000 point day. Amazon, apple, google all down 3 and more. Youre seeing big moves on that. Apple a big component in the dow so that has it down. The nasdaq tech heavy nasdaq down 3 . I just want to mention, theres another Economic Data point you might be interested in here, dana. Data from china showing earnings of Chinese Industrial down for the first time in nearly three years. Thats nothing small because there are big worries here on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange that economies off shore, the rest of the world might be less, but china, germany, japan, all slowing down. Could that hurt our economy . Everybodys watching that. Dana . Dana today whats the feel on the floor . People saying ultimately we could fall a lot more on the dow, down 600 points as we dont to fall. Could it go down 1,000 points . Some are betting yes. Well wait to see if we could see more down side on this roller coaster ride. One glimmer of hope here, dana, this isnt happening with a lot of volume. There arent a lot of people playing in this market. It is sort of easing back attend of the year as a lot of people have already taken off for the holidays. Dana. Dana all right, gerri, thank you. Day six of the partial Government Shutdown as President Trump returns to washington from his unannounced visit to u. S. Troops in iraq. Lawmakers are back in washington with the senate convening two hours from now. The chances of reaching a deal on a spending bill looking slim. Both sides seemingly dug in over funding of border wall. Ellison barber is live with more. Reporter President Trump said that he needs to have a wall, some sort of physical barrier at the southern border. Democrats say that they support effective Border Security, but do not believe a wall is effective. President trump saying in iraq just the other day the technology alone is insufficient. Folks are saying, can we have some drones . Can we have technology . Technology is bells and whistles. You have to have a wall and protection. When you say how long is it going to take . When are they going to say we need Border Security . Reporter the president made an unannounced trip to iraq. For there he continued to talk about the back and forth with democrats, the Government Shutdown. In his plans to visit the border we just gave out a contract that when its all completed out, it will be 115 miles. I think were gonna do it before the state of the union address. I will be going to texas. Well have a long ground breaking. Reporter the white house hasnt provide additional details. We asked for some more information. Havent gotten it yet. When asked if he would accept a deal less than 5 billion mr. Trump initially wanted, if hed take 2 billion, something between what he wanted and what the democrats are offering, President Trump said he was not going to talk about it now. Sources tell fox news the white house did make an offer to democrats last week that it was around 2. 5 billion. The bulk of that money being for Border Security and that including some sort of physical barrier, some sort offensing. Dana later in the show well talk more about that. The president doubling down on his decision to withdraw u. S. Troops from syria. America shouldnt be doing the fighting for every nation on earth. Not being reimbursed in many cases at all. If they want us to do the fighting, they also have to pay a price. And sometimes thats also a monetary price. So were not the suckers world. Were no longer the suckers. Dana joining me now is iian bremmer. Can i play one more piece of sound talking about how troops could be used from iraq to help deal with isis . No plans at all, no. We can use this as a base if we wanted to do something in syria. I will say this. You take isis and if we see something happening with isis that we dont like, we can hit them so fast and so hard, they really wont know what the hell happened. Dana ian, how should we be thinking about syria and our position there . Well, we know there are countries in the region that have an awful lot of interest in what happens on the ground there. Its iran. Its turkey. Its russia, most importantly. Theyve spent the money. They put the troops on the ground. Theyve engaged militarily. Thats the reason why the United States was not able to put an end to the war. Its the reason why the political outcome has won and theyre consolidating. The u. S. Is a marginal presence in syria. It was true under obama. Its true under trump. The fact that no one wants to say that. And effectively trump saying that makes it look like, putin won. Yeah, at the end of the day, the u. S. Is not the driving force in syria. It is true we have concerns about isis. We have been engaged in fighting them. Our ability to do so is more limited when we pull the troops out. But its not gone. Not with the naval base presence we have. Not with our surveillance capacity, our missiles. And not with troops and bases on the ground in neighboring iraq. It is true that not telling our allies or even talking with u. S. Defense commanders in advance of making that decision does hurt morale. Dana the president did not meet with anyone from the iraqi government. I read that they tried to work something out, it didnt work out. At the end, the president did not meet with them. What about this new government in iraq . They had a phone call. The sugg skwrefrt shun from trump, who was only on the ground for three hours is he would meet with the iraqi leader at the american base. That it would be unacceptable from a protocol perspective. Look, if you are an american ally on the ground in the region and trump is saying im taking out these resources, youre not very happy. So the reality is not much would have been accomplished in that meeting anyway. Trump has said hes committed to staying in iraq. Well see what happens with the next secretary of defense. The real question will be, do we have a dramatic shift like we did when mcmasters was out, john bolten brought in a different view of what the u. S. Should look like in the world. Will mattis replacement look radically different from secretary mattis . I dont expect so. I expect it will be less than the media has said. But well see. Dana thats our favorite show. Well see what happens. I want to take you back just a year ago when you were here. Watch this. Topping the list is china and the increasing power vacuum left behind by the u. S. And asia. Second is the chance for a major mistake that could spark a conflict in areas like syria and north korea. The list also includes u. S. iran relatio relations, as well as security in africa. I thought you were going to be in that clip. You were on that show a year ago. I was going to say it looked just like you. Dana my hairs a little longer. Throughout the year you do global risks and you took predictions. How do you think you did this year . We always keep them on our home page all year long. We go back at the end of the year. If youre not keeping yourself honest, youre not doing it. Dana number one was that china loves a vacuum. Does that turn out to be true . It did. I dont think you did much to recognize the chinese would have more space to operate. It was made very clear at the end of the first quarter, the year when president xi got rid of term limits and announced himself president for life. It was clear how this risk played out. It wasnt just about chinese occupying a lot of space. It was push back. The americans, the europeans. Everyone but japan basically saying we have a problem with all of this leading in economically, technologically with what the chinese was doing. In 2018 the single biggest risk that affected the markets was chinas vacuum was there. Dana the second one was third one was global tech cold war. Do you think that is continuing . Related to that, right. So you look at huaha, this Chinese Telecom firm that the u. S. Said we dont want you in. Even other countries weve been hitting on trade, the germans for example, the french, saying we dont think we want these guys. Canadians actually indicting, arresting this individual, the cfo, daughter of the founder, and the chinese actually now detaining a number of canadians including a high ranking former diplomat. Theres no question that weve gone from a u. S. Led Global Economy with one set of standards to, on the technology side, china and america as allies fighting each other. Dana thats a fascinating one to watch. Tell me about u. S. iran relations. This is one that played out a little more interestingly. In the sense that first the United States did pull out unilaterally of the Iranian Nuclear deal. Bolton wanted that to be pressing on regime change, basically. No one should get any oil from iran. Pompeo said, no, we want a whole bunch of optionalty so that countries can continue to work with the iranians. Pompeo got his way. Which means even though this has been a risk, the deal was still in place. The end of 2018, oil prices are low. The iranians are not producing. So the iranians are basically trying to run out the clock on trump. Saying, if he only lasts one term and we have good behavior, the next person will stick with the deal, well still be okay. Thats a risk. Well see how it plays out. Dana we have 30 seconds left. Tell me about the erosion of institution. It includes the world trade organization, Democratic Political institutions around the world. They continue to take hits tp the average people see them as less legitimate. We dont know what real news is as much anymore. The impact that risk has is not as much today as it will be over the long term. Thats why it wasnt close to the top of the risk. It sounds horrible, eroding institutions. Institutions are pretty strong. Dana ian bremmer, thank you. Happy new year. Dana happy new year to you, too. Saudi arabias king solomon making changes with his cabinet officials, but is he holding anyone responsible for Jamal Khashoggis murder. Also the role electronic trading may play in this weeks ups and downs and where things may go from here. I think in the end, markets responded. I think in the end the fundamentals in the u. S. Are very very positive. Hi im joan lunden. Todays Senior Living communities have never been better, with amazing amenities like movie theaters, exercise rooms and swimming pools, public cafes, bars and bistros even pet care services. And theres never been an easier way to get great advice. A place for mom is a free service that pairs you with a local advisor to help you sort through your options and find a perfect place. A place for mom. You know your family we know Senior Living. Together well make the right choice. Dana king solomon issuing a wide arraignment in his cabinet today. All this coming after the International Uproar of Jamal Khashoggis. Lucas tomlinson is at the pentagon with more. Reporter it was a big shakeup today including the firing of saudi arabias foreign minister. King solomon issued a wide range decree, the most tkopl tphepbt official removed is the foreign minister, who was the target of an assassination attempt outside a popular restaurant in washington, d. C. By iranian agents when he was ambassador here in 2011. He maintained close ties to washington. But he was unable to protect the crown prince from scathing criticism by lawmaker, blaming the crown prince for the murder. He sat down with bret baeier. We are looking at every individual member of the team. We are trying to find out how they were assembled, how they were dispatched. Were trying to acertain the facts as to what happened in the consulate. Reporter he was replaced by a long time finance minister who holds a ph. D. In economics. A masters from the university of denver. All the changes appear to further r consolidate the kings sons power crown prince. The u. S. Intelligence committee holds nbs responsible for the killing of jamal khashoggi. The u. S. Senate recently passed a resolution blaming mbs for the murder. Mike pompeo and jim mattis a tried to vote against cutting off military funding for the Saudi Campaign in yemen. In a strong rebuke to the white house t senators voted to cut off the funding and advance the bill. Dana will the crown prince or anyone be punished for the alleged role in khashoggis murder . Reporter it doesnt appear to be the case that anyone will be blamed, at least not from the saudi government. Mbs role, will consolidate his power and all the ministers appointed near him are close to mbs. The world thought mbs was a transformational leader including when he gave women the right to vote and the right to drive, excuse me. All this today, feels like mbs grip on power will just be strengthened. Dana lucas, thank you. Its not even 2019 yet and the race for 2020 already getting some democrats all riled up. Who has been spending time with beto orourke . And who is reportedly not happy about it . Our Political Panel weighs in. Plus, the Homeland Security department responding to the migrant crisis at the border with new measures after the death of a second child in u. S. Custody this month. With so many children, with flu season, with many people coming ill, our job is to try to identify any children that need medical care and get them to a hospital as quickly as we can. Dana a recent meeting between beto orourke and former president obama sparking speculation as democrats get ready for 2020. Vanity fair reportedly saying the sitdown didnt go well with joe biden. Insiders express the Vice President as upset. The former president s willingness to talk to other contenders whether biden is deciding whether to run. A biden spokesman denied the report saying this is false. For more on this, former Communications Director at the nrcc and john summers a democratic strategist. John, ill start with you. I find this story to be probably unlikely. Joe biden would have to recognize president obama is gonna meet with a lot of democrats going into 2020. Yeah, absolutely. I thought it was an interesting headline, but i dont think theres a whole lot there. Bidens been around a long time. He knows how this stuff works. And he knows president obama loves him. In fact, president obama said one of the smartest decisions hes ever made was selecting biden as his vp. He even gave him the medal of freedom. Obviously, president obama loves joe biden. But its also no secret that president obama said he wants to help support a new generation of Democratic Leaders here in the country. So it on makes sense that hes meeting with potential plausible candidates. Dana jon, you mentioned new. Matt, letted me point you to this new poll from usa today, showing that asking democrats and independents who do you want in 2020 . 59 said someone entirely new. What do you think of that . Well, yeah. Joe biden reminds me a lot of Hillary Clinton in 2014 where their Approval Ratings rise, but as they start to dip their toe back in, the rub starts to show. Joe biden on the president ial stage has melted every single time hes been at the top of the ticket. When was the last time he ran a credible and long competitive campaign . It was before i was born, in 1988. So i think some democrats think dana youre so young. Theyre going to nominate somebody who has a track record from the 70s, last ran their most competitive campaign in the late 80s . I think they deserve to lose in a very convincing way. Dana apparently he was going to talk to his family over the holidays so maybe well know more in january. Bloomberg news did something i thought was fun. I know a ton about sports. I do know march madness happens in march. I know it has to do with basketball. What Bloomberg News did, they picked four different categories, sort of in a bracketing system. Matt, the insider bracket included biden, bloomberg, Terry Mcauliffe and sherrod brown. Out of those four, who do you think might make it out . I think they are all as uninspiring as rice pudding, but i guess biden has the advantage but an of name i. D. When it comes to bloomberg or biden, i dont see them picking a former republican whos defended stop and risk or joe biden who has a long record opposing liberal base on taxes or crime. Dont forget, he presided over the anita hill hearings. So imagine somebody like Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren fileting him over what he did in the 80s over anita hill. Dana let me talk about the outcider bracket. Steve bullock, eric garcetti, mayor of los angeles, and mitch landreau. Who might come out of that . Thats an Interesting Group of people. Thats category i would put orourke in as well. I know they put him in the liberal bracket. Id put him in the outside bracket. I like the idea of hickenlooper and garcetti. These two very successful experienced people. Hickenlooper has an affinity to the west. I would love to see a governor from colorado be elected. Someone whos got executive experience, but also understands the challenges of the west. Dana the diversity bracket. Matt, you knew there had to be one of those. I dont think any of these are token diversity candidate. I think everyone in their own right, regardless of their gender or race, has a compelling case if the president were to run a real campaign. This is the bracket with the most promise. I think kamala and gillibrand have strong cases to make. I think who ever comes out and can give them the hope, the way Ronald Reagan gave the conservatives in the 80s, as well as somebody who can prove they can take the fight to trump. Thats why a prosecutor is a real big appeal in this bracket. Dana the last one to you, jon. The liberal bracket. We mentioned p
