FOXNEWSW The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino April 15, 2020

Struggle against a common threat, a dangerous enemy. When we are divided the virus exploits the cracks between us. Dana in addition to halting funding the President Trump says the white house will look into the organizations handling of the coronavirus outbreak. He accused the group of mismanaging his response and being too trusting of information coming from the Chinese Government that led to the global pandemic. Health and political leaders around the world are criticizing the president s move. The cdc director says the agency still plans to work with the w. H. O. In the meantime, the death toll in the United States passing 26,000 and that is after new york city revised as numbers to include people who presumably died from that virus but did not receive a positive test. Its a matter of some controversy. We begin with chief white horsee correspondent john roberts. First of all lets take on the firestorm the president ignited last night by confronting to the w. H. O. After early prayer, curly or praising both the World Health Organization and china for the response to the coronavirus. The president last night taking a scythe to both of them. The president complained World Health Organization mismanaged the Coronavirus Response and also participated in what he called a coverup of what was really going on in china. Listen here. President trump the w. H. O. Failed to investigate credible reports from sources in wuhan that conflicted directly with the Chinese Governments official accounts. There was credible information to suspect human to human transitiotransmission in decemb9 which that have spirit of the w. H. O. To investigate and investigate immediately. Dana at the president s decision to cut funding in the pandemic brought howls of criticism from the democrats. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying this is another case as i have set of the ineffective response, that a weak person, a poor leader takes no responsibility. A weak person blames others. Its dangerous, illegal and will be swiftly challenged. Back in early february in an interview with trish regan of the fox business channel, it included headed into wuhan. The president then calling them the best and the brightest. Clearly something has changed between then and now which im sure will be fodder for a question at this afternoons coronavirus briefing. Dana and what about the president . He hasnt really taken the wood to china as much as w. H. O. , what about that . He just keeps saying his friend xi jinping is responding to the virus but yesterday he was a little more critical with china suggesting that they were saying there wasnt any human to human transmission when there really was. It kind of opened up the first little crack there. When the United States has opened up it to go back to work and as many of 20 of them may be able to open again. That means that may 1st is a soft target deadline. Listen to what the president said yesterday. President trump it will be very, very close, that will be for some states. There is over 20 that are in extremely good shape and we think we will be able to get them open fairly quickly, and then others will follow. Dr. Anthony fauci has suggested any reopening of the country will not be like flipping the switch, it will be more like a rolling process. There will be a great deal of variability, it will probably be a rolling entry into it with some states actually doing nothing different because this is still a difficult situation and you dont want to relax any of the physical separation guidelines. And others who will be doing much better. It wont be a onesizefitsall. The center for Disease Control and fema are coming up with guidelines are coming up the broader overall plan update administration will develop in terms of guidelines to send out to the governors and states. One thing that the cdc and fema are suggesting, dana, and this is very interesting, before you begin to reopen the areas of the country make sure that you have a plan in place to quickly snap back those that mitigation techniques of a local effort were to occur. Dana you have to. So many decisions to make. We will keep talking about this, big discussion about reopening the economy. Our next guest is facing the question himself. Joining us now as a governor of New Hampshire. I noted yesterday that the governor of california has released certain criteria that he wants to see matt before he reopens. How are you thinking about that in the live free or die state . Sure. The decision to close various things whether its a stayathome order, Remote Learning or a closing nonessential businesses all through the executive power of the governor for taking it very seriously. As we open things up, similar to what dr. Fauci was mentioning because not only are we going to step into it but there are certain things that can be a lot easier to open as opposed to others. Large sports venues and arenas, will bwill they be the first to . Absolutely not because of dynamics are so difficult to manage and we see some of the results. Other aspects of the stay at home order. Can we segregate out certain populations . Do you keep to stay at home order in place for certain vulnerable populations work but release it to others, others certain nonessential businesses that you can start bringing back under new guidance and new formulas . What we are doing is reaching out to those businesses and organizations and saying how can you open under a new norm and a new system but still maintain the physical system that it is allowed here in New Hampshire to mitigate the viral spread . Dana yesterday i read in the New York Times about a great town in New Hampshire. It was just two months ago that we had enjoyed all that time for the New Hampshire primary. It was a lovely little town, very worried about a couple of things. One, they need the tourism. They have a factory there that could close. Also the worries about tourism bringing the virus possibly into the state. What do you think about that being part of New Hampshires economy . Its a huge factor. We have boston 20 or 30 miles south of us and it still increasing at a very rapid rate down there. I think governor baker is doing a great job dealing with a very unbelievable situation in terms of the number of outbreaks and the death rate thats happening down there. They are just 2 20 miles south f us. Lets say we look at golf courses or beaches or campgrounds, i talked to vermont, maine and massachusetts all the time because we are also connected. So by doing that we want to make sure if we are going to flex something open and create opportunity which we all want to do, we are doing it in a way that helps one another. When it comes to tourism, hospitality and hotels theyve been absolutely devastated. When you look at the number of people on unemployment its out well over 120,000 that have applied for unemployment benefits. They are driven by tourism but thats going to be the hardest thing to get open. I cant tell people from massachusetts, you are not allowed into New Hampshire. A lot of them have second homes and they come up here, mandating that they do a two week quarantine if they are to visit from outofstate. All these variables come into play but you want to make it safe. We want to protect our citizens first but still maintain the freedom. Thats why a stepwise approach will be the most effective. Dana can i get just a quick thought from you, as a governor you have to figure out how the election goes off well and in your state are you thinking about some absentee voting . I also saw that you recommended the idea of driveup voting. How would that work . New hampshire New Hampshire has an incredible history. The first in the nation primary went off without a hitch and we got the votes right away. Whatever we do we have to maintain a system that works. All we have done here is our attorney general and secretary of state have looked at our current absentee voting possibility and theres a box thats currently there that says, if you cannot attend to vote in person because of a disability or physical Health Reasons you can check a box and vote absentee. All weve done is allowed for these elections if folks cant attend because of a covid reason, then you vote absentee. This isnt male in voting, we are proactively sending everyone in the state absentee ballots. What traditionally it will do 10 of the vote and, we may do 10 given where we may or may not be with the viral spread. We are not fundamentally changing our system at all. If people can fill out the ballot in their car you still have to present an idea into the checkout system. Nothing fundamentally changes except being able to do it outside in the car. Its all the same thing. Its all pen and paper and you still put it in the optical scanner on your way out. We are allowing them to explore their opportunity. Dana all right governor, good luck with all of your decisions you have to make and thanks for being on the show. Thank you. Dana i mentioned this at the top, new york city is revising the number of coronavirus deaths in the city is adding more than 4,000 fatalities to the account. The Health Department is saying these are people who likely died from covid19 but never tested positive. David lee miller is following this from new york city to catch us up. David lee . Thats right, dana. New york city sets a likely death toll is approaching 11,000. The spike in fatalities is because the Health Department here is calculating not only the deaths that are confirmed but presumed as well. And thats for a total of 10,099. The Health Care System is overloaded and yesterday alone 752 people died from the virus. The majority of those, and thats about a quarter of all deaths in the virus since the outbreak began were in nursing home. They have not identified by name where the deaths occurred and moments ago Governor Andrew Cuomo address that controversy. I said to them, err on the side of more disclosure and thats what they have been doing and thats what they will continue to do. But dont discount a persons right to privacy about the death of a loved one and you are right to publicize that death because you want to. So its a balance. Homes and other parts of the northeast will also see another related deaths. Leslie come back here in new york state just a short time ago, Governor Andrew Cuomo said hes going to issue an executive order requiring anyone who can social distance to wear a mask when in public. On the state of the economy, governor says he is working on some kind of phasedin plan that will be gradual with the number one priority being the publics health. Dana david lee, thank you. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. President trump all over the world, tremendous death and economic devastation because those tasked with protecting us by being truthful and transparent failed to do so. It would have been so easy to be truthful. So much death has been caused by their mistakes. Dana President Trump last night as he announced plans to pull u. S. Funding from the World Health Organization last night. Lets bring in republican congressman Michael Waltz to talk a little bit about this. What do you think about pulling the funding . The president also said we would try to get reform so whats the best way to balance that . It is a balance, dana. But at this point i agree with the president s move. Theres a lot of these critics saying, really criticizing and the w. H. O. Needs to change its behavior sooner than later. This isnt just the United States having issue with the w. H. O. Or with china, there are a number of European Countries and african countries and others that are looking to the w. H. O. For guidance on the severity of this. They are looking at guidance for getting to the bottom of how its spreading whether its human to human or animal to human and weather at the banks of whats coming out of china and all of it was downplayed. I think it caused a global delayed reaction and has literally cost the world lives. It isnt just a trump issue our america issue, its a global issue. Dana is so in addition to this w. H. O. Funding, what with china . Broadly speaking we could spend a whole hour on this. This should be a wakeup call for americans that the Chinese Communist party is in a cold war with the United States and has been for some time. This is in all of society effort for them, from student stealing an ip at the direction of their government to a military issue. It right now they have one of their aircraft carriers off of the coast of japan and everything in between. One of the things we have to understand is how the Chinese Government is organizing these and if they are using it by influencing developing countries that are hugely in debt to the Chinese Government and influencing who they appointed to head these organizations. Thats human rights, trade, International Migration and in this case the head of the w. H. O. Was a former Ethiopian Health minister and ethiopia is usually in debt to the Chinese Government. And thats how through the back door they are organizing this to be complicit. In the last thing they should be doing where the american taxpayers are funding their own issues, is funding these organizations that are parroting chinese propaganda. Dana congressman Michael Waltz, thank you and take care. Thank you so much. Dana a fierce backlash against stayathome orders as protesters blocked the streets in one state capital saying, enough is enough. Where this is happening, up ne next. Like a Good Neighbor, state farm is there. Dana a back now with the story. Protesters are blocking the streets of michigans capital as critics say the governor stayathome orders have gone way too far. Mark tobin is live from chicago with more. This is taking the place and going the way organizers had hoped. They have locked up traffic and created big visual and thats what they hope to do. On the other hand demonstrators did not all stick to the guidelines posted by the Michigan Conservative Coalition about remaining on the mic in their vehicles. The complaint of demonstrators is the executive order put in place by gretchen whitmer, a democrat are too restrictive and too arbitrary. Canoes are okay but powerboats are not. You can buy a Lottery Ticket but not stuff to work on your house. You may not drive to reinstate Vacation Home but people from outside of michigan can visit their michigan cottages. You cant buy paint, you cant buy lawn fertilizer or grass seed, come on. All statewide, really . We are tired of not being able to buy the things that we need to come and go to the hairdresser is in get her hair done. Governor whitmer says she respects the right to protest but want people to do it in a manner that does not jeopardize anyones house. Michigan state police said by and large most of the demonstrators respect social distance and guidelines so they felt no need to take any enforcement action. Dana . Statement thank you mike tobin for that update. The cdc is warning of potential longterm harm to vital organs as people begin recovering from the coronavirus. Lungs, kidneys and even the heart may have severe damage. Dr. Janette nesheiwats at Fox News Contributor and family and emergency physician. I know youve treated a lot of covid19 patience. Its too early to say what longterm effects are because it hasnt been long term enough but what are you looking for and concerned about . You are absolutely right. For those people that can have become critically ill but are fortunate enough to survive, for example, lung disease. We know if youve been on a ventilator theres a certain degree of harm or damage that being on a ventilator and having the virus can cause to the lung to serve especially if develop respiratory distress syndrome.
