Appearing before september 11, 2001. They were the stories being covered when the planes were on route because we have the luxury of covering them. Then boom. 9 11 is for millions a loss of innocence. We woke up one morning no longer naive about an evil world. What we are reading evaporated with 3,000 lives. We felt shame. How did we not see this coming . Some people did. They were ignored, which is why 17 years to the day, we shouldnt just remember the victims, but the warnings too. We cant let those warnings die. For unlike lots of old, mutually assured destruction is no deterrent for the murder is murder, the more the merrier. The planet is merely a drunk tank for heaven, a pointless stop on the final journey. Technology helps the enemy speed up the trip, a bio agent on a drone, sent an openair stadium will make 9 11 for like 910. I know what we will be thinking about, as we watch that media obsess over gossip, member they are missing whatever comes next and when it happens, they wont remember it themselves because it really wont matter. Donald trump is an shanksville where flight 93 went down. We grouped together for every mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter who was stolen for us that the twin towers, the pentagon. And here in this pennsylvania field, we honor their sacrifice by pledging to never flinch in the face of evil and to do what ever takes to keep america safe. Greg dana, youve been there at the memorial. We always say it was basically the first 9 11 counteroffensive. Dana im so glad President Trump went because the more people can know about shanksville and the memorial, the more people should go visit it. Its not easy to get to. There is a reason thankfully it went down in the field. There wasnt a highly populated area right there. Shanksville, the community, so loving and what they did for the families there is impressive. Also at that memorial, gathered every year are the family members of the 40 victims. I think it was 40 passengers and five crew or 35 passengers and five crew. Was interesting about shanksville is that at that memorial, you can see the field where they actually made a decision. Here are these americans. They find out whats happening because theyre able to place a couple calls home and they find out okay, this is what they are going to do. They are in the back and theyre figuring out what they can do. Something i didnt know until i went there, one of the terrorists were not able to get one extra person on that flight. They were supposed to have a certain number, five or six. They only had four. Which meant there werent enough terrorists in order to keep track of all of them. They were able to have this confab in the back of plane where they made some phone calls and if you go to shanksville, you can listen to some of the voice mails that were left in its very its touching. Its heartbreaking. I think its important. The thing i love about this flight is that we find out that after they have a conversation, they decide to take a vote about what they are going to do. That is so american. They both are there going to try to rush the cockpit. I remember when i did the package they are and i interviewed one of the brothers and he said he truly believed that those who rushed the cockpit on that plane believe they might be able to be talked through how to land it and they wanted to come home that night to be with their families. We know that didnt happen. Many people who worked in washington, d. C. , at the time credit the bravery and the patriotism of those passengers and the crew with saving so many lives and perhaps helping protect our country. Greg if it had gone to the white house. Dana or the capital. Greg when i was looking at the stuff that happened before. Michael jordan Michael Jordan and mariah carey, it doesnt seem that long ago. 17 years, it sounds like a long time ago but it doesnt. Its not. Jesse its not. For this generation, we have a different concept of war. Other generations didnt have to deal with the idea that there was an enemy on our soil living amongst us trying to kill us. We have been on a war footing since 9 11 and we are still on that war footing. Every day, you hear these lines, and they become slogans that they are not. We are the first line of defense. Or if you see something, Say Something. Those are actually literally words to live by, because americans of all stripes sent in tips to the fbi. The fbi gets tens of thousands of tips a year which breaks down to about 40 a day. When you think about, they take it on the chicken a lot, the fbi, sometimes on this network for some of the political abuses they been accused of. Thats one thing but its a massive organization, it is stocked with so many great patriots that spend their whole 24 hours that they are awake trying to protect us and trying to protect our freedoms when we wake up in the morning. We are thinking about the Football Game or the kids were what happened on tv last night, but they are thinking about how to disrupt plots from terrorist terrorists. Its a whole nother scenario, and i love when 9 11 comes because you remembering and its a tragic day but its a day where everybody can come together and come together as americans. I always think george bush was the best president at that time on 9 11 to guide the country forward with the bullhorn in the rubble and the first pitch strike at Yankee Stadium and his clear black and white language that he used to rally the nation was just what the doctor ordered at the time, and he woke up every day thinking about how to protect this country. That was his most solemn duty, and he really pursue that with a lot of vigilance. Today i just want to say i am sorry for the people that lost their lives in shanksville and then the pentagon and at the towers, and my heart goes out to their families. We are never going to forget. Greg juan come i want to roll some tape. This is chris wray talking about current threats. Cyber and others. Todays terrorism threats still includes sleeper cells, al qaeda, all the kind of major terrorist organizations that you would think of. But we are also very focused now on homegrown violent extremists which are people who are largely here already in the United States, big cities, small towns, coast to coast. These are people who are largely radicalized online. Terrorism today moves at the speed of social media. Greg i think this is a real challenge for us because all it takes is one person who was radicalized and can go on the internet and find a way to make a bomb. It is chilling. Juan to me, its an idea. You have to cope with it as ideological cancer. Something that is spreading in the body of the world, global world, as opposed to just the United States. I was just listening to dana and jesse and thinking how much of this moment we all have a sense of grief and loss over what happened that day on the tragedy of it. I just hope that as people look back, they dont stop looking forward. Lee hamilton and tom kean, who are on the 9 11 commission had a piece in usa today today, talking about taking preventative steps that we have to be vigilant as americans in understanding that the idea has never gone away. Isis has never gone away despite claims to the contrary. What we know now is that they are about as powerful as they were back in 04 and 05. As powerful as al qaeda was then and that they are still in syria and iraq in huge numbers. Fighting this, it really takes a lot of money. It takes a lot of people. I think from the public, it takes a sense of not forgetting. Today when i saw the president going off on the justice department, im thinking stop. Just stop for a day, will you . We dont need that. We need is for all of us to see you know what, we love our country. We need to hang together, and we need to be vigilant. Greg jed, i think the challenges its hard to get the public to get worried about Cyber Threats because its not a visceral, horrible event. If they paralyze the power grid, and that is you are going to turn america into chaos. I think thats one thing we have to worry about not be complacent. Jedidiah Cyber Threats are terrifying, the concept. Also the idea of complacency. You hear people d Priority National securely right now because there is not an attack happening today. Right after 9 11, iron member everyone prioritizing National Security and beefing up the military and being ready for these things. That slowly drifts away the more time you have away from it. The problem is of course you have the fbi come as you talked about working on things behind the scenes. Just because you dont see something happening, that means they are working to make sure something doesnt happen. They need the funding in the bakken. The other thing, two things. Leadership, extremely important. I remove that moment. I was working in new york city. Ive never seen george bush standing on top of that rubble and what it told me is, a new york city girl at the time, terrified, very young. I had a president was going to do everything he could to put a stop to it. The president needs to make it a priority to instill confidence and safety. The one last point, i was one of those people fleeing for my life with everyone else one thing i remember about the days that i didnt know anyone elses politics. The people who took me in, i didnt know where we disagreed, where their opinions were. All i know is that we were all americans and we were under attack and we figured out a way to come together. That has to be something that happens when there is not a tragedy or impending tragedy. There has to be a way to do that. We can do it. We are absolutely capable of doing it. Greg the carolinas bracing for a massive and potentially catastrophic category 4 hurricane. The latest on florence ahead. Take us downtown, waze. Waze integration seamlessly connecting the world inside. With the world outside. Making life a little. Easier. Introducing the wellconnected lincoln mkc. Dana the east coast is breezing for a massive category 4 hurricane ready to pound the carolinas and virginia with a lifethreatening storm surge, destructive winds, and other potentially catastrophic flooding. Florence is shaping up to be one of the strongest forms in u. S. History as she turns closer to the atlantic coast. We have live team fox coverage with Senior CorrespondentRick Leventhal on the ground in North Carolina and chief meteorologist Rick Reichmuth tracking a monster storm the weather center. Lets go to rick rick. The 5 00 advisory came out and they have upgraded watches and warnings. Hurricane warnings exist here all across coastal areas of North Carolina. Down across the northern half here in south carolina. Within about 36 hours, we are going to be feeling the her Hurricane Force winds. Any changes we see before it makes landfall at with strength, at least the strongest one, its going to be because of drywall replacement cycles. A new eye wall forms. We will likely see this strength and a little bit overnight, maybe we can little bit tomorrow and probably maybe a little bit hopefully before mclean fall we might see some conditions interact with it a little bit. Doesnt matter if its a category 4 or 3, the impacts are going to be the same. This is thursday afternoon, thursday evening. Our big problem happens here, as we go toward sunday, look at it. It has barely moved. We have storm surge with this. We have the strong winds, and were going to have a prolonged rain event with this because of its slow movement. All of our models bring it somewhere here along the coast. Cant say exactly where. South carolina, North Carolina. Then you see the loop, thats where we start to lose there is high pressure. These rainfall totals are going to really pile up. Rainfall that falls in the storm surge has pushed the watters of the water can get back to the ocean. The flooding is going to be quite extreme. We dont know exactly where these numbers will be. It depends where landfall goes in. We could be seeing these numbers well into the double digits across appellations. Certainly will see some spots probably in the 22 mac 30inch range and thats going to cause a lot of in land flooding. We have the storm surge car probably the worst of it is going to be around 12 feet all that water, so many rivers. The water is going to go in there. It stalls and its not really going to go anywhere. We are at a category 4 storm. Certainly looks like were going to have some sort of landfall, a major hurricane, category 3 or 4. Dana thank you. The entire weather team has been amazing. We appreciate it. Rick leventhal is standing by. As you can probably see, the size of the storm is staggering. Hurricane force winds extend 40 miles out from the eye. Wrightsville beach seems to be right in the path of the storm, even if it does jog left or right, they are likely to feel it here and thats why the governors of south and North Carolina have issued mandatory evacuation orders. In south carolina, about a Million People have been effective. They took i26 from charleston to columbia, made all of the liens west bound to they could get out of town as clear as possible. Here in North Carolina, the outer banks, Wrightsville Beach, other coastal areas have also instituted mandatory evacuation orders. People are being told to get out now while you still can. We heard from North Carolinas governor who is that people need to take this seriously. The forecast places North Carolina in the bullseye of Hurricane Florence. This storm is strong. And its getting stronger. Widespread Power Outages are expected. They could last for weeks in some areas because of the conditions on the ground, which we still dont know, of course, how bad they will be. Dana rick, we have a couple questions. We are going to start with juan. Juan i would like to ask Rick Reichmuth a selfless question. How much will this storm affect boston, new york, philadelphia, d. C. , richmond. It looks like it is going across the south but what about the big cities . I think new york city will probably get a little bit of rain out of this coming coming may be an interest au pair boston, probably completely clear. D. C. Is going to be an interesting one. If the storm goes a little further west, it will be on the lower side. Could be less than that. Could be around 82 mack 10 inches. Different scenarios, we cant say. A lot of water can be pushed up into the Chesapeake Bay and if the wind continues in that direction, that water will pile up and not be able to get out and that could cause some problems. Juan flying is going to be impossible . Dana do you have plans, juan . Juan anywhere on the east coast. Are they going to shut the airports . Amtrak, buses. I havent heard anything just yet between d. C. And up to new york or boston. I think its going to be fine. D. C. Potentially will have problems. New york airports i think be just fine. Dana one last question. Jedidiah for Rick Leventhal, im wondering if you see people evacuating. The concern is that, i lived through sandy with my parents. People feel very sad and they dont want to leave their homes and they are tempted to stay. D. C. Do you see people leaving e area . We have seen people boarding up. We have seen runs on stores for basic supplies. Some people do plan to ride it out but here in Wrightsville Beach, they are going to close the bridge to wilmington and beyond tomorrow. If you havent left by then, you could be stuck here. If you want to get in here, you wont be able to until they reopen the bridge. The folks here know that. We just talked to one gentleman who was here on vacation and his hotel is closing tomorrow, so had to cut his vacation short. Hes going to get out of town, as are most people, because the water is going to get shut off here in Wrightsville Beach tomorrow night. The power could likely shut down during the storm or certainly after the storm, and who knows for how long . This place can be beautiful, but as the mayor said without services, can be pretty dicey. Dana thank you both for that. Next up, senator Kamala Harris being slammed by factcheckers by posting misleading video of Supreme Court nominee brett kavanaugh. The controversy next.
