FOXNEWSW The Kelly File March 31, 2016

Got a dramatic new poll on the coming wisconsin primary that shows senator ted cruz taking a double digit lead over donald trump in a state where cruz had been trailing until now. Here tonight on all of that, the pollster who just released a stunning new survey. We begin tonight with our chief Political Correspondent carl cameron, who just filed this report from appleton, wisconsin. Reporter thanks, megyn. New polls out in wisconsin and it shows that ted cruz is the frontrunner in the badger state with a significant lead, 40 to Donald Trumps 30 , with john kasich in third at 21 . This could be a moment six days before the primary and with cruz in the lead, an opportunity to win here. It could be a real opportunity for the stop Trump Movement to put some of the skids on, his attempt to get to 1237 delegates before the convention. With that said, on a day when donald trump got tripped up on abortion, ted cruz held a celebration of women, and with his wife and mother and Carly Fiorina unveiled his women for cruz initiative, saying that every issue should be a womans issue. National polls suggest trump has a problem with women, so this was, for all intents and purposes, a direct shot as what cruz sees as a trump vulnerability. And then Corey Lewandowski has had misdemeanor charges pressed him. And john kasich was in new york today, which votes next after wisconsin. Kasich knows hes ut of contention in wisconsin and is positioning for a bunch of the Eastern States at the end of the month. There was one piece of video that will probably cause him some headaches in new york, however. He was at houfd beach, and theres tape of this, eating pizza with a fork. Megyn . Oh, man. Thats not allowed. Whats up with that . Carl, thank you. Joining us now, charles franklin, director of the marquette universitys polling team. Thank you very much for being here with us. So obviously ted cruz has shot way up in just a couple of weeks. Cruz goes from 19 to 40 in about a month in our polling. But i think the other part is, donald trump stalled in the water. He was at 30 in february. Hes at 30 now. Not Much Movement there. A lot of movement for cruz. What is does that tell you . It says that trump, who has polled behind his National Average here in wisconsin, may have found a state where he does have a ceiling. It also shows that political leaders in the state have come to coalesce behind cruz after taking a while to do it. But in the last ten days theyve overwhelmingly embraced cruz as the choice in opposition to trump. Most of that happened after our poll or as the poll was going on. But i think its clearly helping cruz. Governor walkers endorsement came after your poll. But talkradio has been coalescing behind ted cruz. Question for you on the gender gap, cruz has almost equal support between men and women. Trump has an 11point gender gap. Your thoughts on it . Thats the kind of gender gap that is not as large as some people might expect it to be. But the good news for ted cruz is hes performing equally well across genders, picking up solid support with men and women. Trump has said look, im going these polls you cant rely on them, because im going to get crossover voters, democrats and other bhs who wil vote for me, so dont believe the hype that ted cruz is ahead of me. We do have an open primary. But in our data, no more than 10 of the Republican Voters are going to be democrats or people who are independents that lean democratic. Independents will come to the Republican Party for 60 . Did you account for that in your polling . Oh, yeah. Its absolutely included in it. Its part of the data. Theres no mystery. Thats the point of the poll. It reveals how much crossover there is rather than just guessing. Mr. Franklin, thank you for being here. As carl cameron mentioned, one of his key challenges has been Approval Rating with women. Today, he was being interviewed by Chris Matthews of msnbc when he was pressed on abortion and this happened. Watch. How do you ban abortion . You go back to a position like they had where people will perhaps go to illegal places. But you have to ban it. Do you believe in punishment for abortion yes or no, as a principle . The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment. For the woman . Yeah. That woman quickly became a huge headline. And within a couple of hours the campaign was clarifying with a statement that read in part, if Congress Passed legislation making abortion illegal and the courts upheld this legislation or any state were permitted to ban abortion, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman. Stewart stevens is a former Mitt Romney Campaign strategist, and author of the innocent have nothing to fear. And in a moment well be joined by herman cain. The reversal on this abortion position was swift, it was a complete 180. This is the reaction that weve seen in some conservative corners tonight, including on National Review suggesting that donald trump just hasnt seriously thought these issues through. Your thoughts . What i thought was most interesting is the part that hasnt gotten much attention, when he was saying he wanted to go back to where there were illegal abortion clinics. Nobody wants that. The prolife factions of america dont want to go back to that, nor do the prochoice factions of america. The prolife will go back to a culture that supports adoption where people are encouraged to have children and welcome them into families. That is just a really disturbing part of that, that he felt that sort of culture was something you would want to go back to. What weve seen is a fee reversals by donald trump. He did a 180 on this abortion, women need to be punished if they have an abortion, which is not the prolife position. Some of the people in line were saying only somebody who is trying to sound like theyre prolife would say that, because the prolifers dont believe that. But he also reversed himself within moments on a cnn town hall when asked about the top three functions of government and he included education and health care. And Anderson Cooper said, arent you against federal government for being involved in education . He said oh, yeah, im for the states doing that. He told scott pelley on cbs news that the federal government was going to pay for health care for those that didnt have it. The question is whether donald trump has a set of principles that he would bring with him to the presidency. I think there was also a terrible answer about Nuclear Proliferation where he said he was against it but he wanted japan and south korea to have Nuclear Weapons which is something the United States government has been opposed to. It was a really bad interview. It sounded like a guy coming out on anaesthesia. I just dont think hes taking running for president with the seriousness it depends. There is a difference between this and calling up imus and spouting off what you think. People actually listen and Pay Attention and care what you think when you run for president. You know, there has been a tendency among some that are critics of donald trump, but i just dont think he really has an organized political mindset. When i think of Donald Trumps political mind, i think of sort of like a dresser in a college dorm where you sort of open up one drawer and you have a jumble of this and another drawer with a jumble of that. He hasnt spent a lot of time trying to organize this into a coherent political philosophy. And people just say hes a populist. Today he said what kind of Supreme Court justice would you appoint . He said i would look people that would look very seriously at Hillary Clintons email disaster. The Supreme Court dont get to do that kind of investigation. But the question is, stu, whether any of this will hurt him, because we are seeing now some erosion in wisconsin, thats one state. Its a very good question. I think that the fact that he was at 30 and is still at 30 and theres a coalescing of support behind senator cruz means something. I think to people in past races have stopped at a point and looked at a candidate and you see this a lot in runoffs that you have. Where a candidate doesnt get to 50 and you have a runoff between two candidates. Usually its the candidate in second place going into the runoff who ends up winning the runoff. That could be happening here. You also have the fact that if you look apartment these polls, donald trump is losing to Bernie Sanders in a real clear politics average by 17. 5 . Obviously, Bernie Sanders is losing to Hillary Clinton in most of the polls yet. I have to go. Great to see you. Our next guest knows how quick a candidate can get hit on this. Herman cain joins me now. Great to see you again, sir. So we just sort of ticked through the positions, the reversals on the positions weve seen from donald trump in the past 24 hours. What do you make of it . Well, first of all, we know that donald trump is not a polished political politician. Hes not. Yes, did he make some statements that would be considered missteps or misstatements . Absolutely, yes. Heres what stewart and many of the establishment people dont understand about donald trump. They dont understand the difference between a strategic statement and a tactical statement. You are very easily going to get tripped up overcal statements. It happened to me. But what people are attracted to donald trump about is the strategic implications that he makes with some of the things he says. Yes, he has made some missteps. Yes, hes turned off certain groups. But if you look at the enthusiasm polls that just came out, his supporters are more enthusiastic than some of the supporters of the other candidates. Im not going to defend he may have made a misstatement. But what i am going to support is the fact that many of the things that he talks about are strategic and not down in the weeds with some of these tactical statements that people take and run with it in order to attack him. When you refer to, yes, he may be alienating some groups, his numbers with women in particular have been very concerning to a lot of republicans. Whoever they choose they want them to beat Hillary Clinton. Right now he has 73 of all american women that have an unfavorable women of him. How will he turn that around . The same way hes going to turn around the perception of black people and other minorities, because keep in mind, many people in the media have spoon fed the perception of donald trump relative to women, relative to blacks, relative to minorities that some people in the media want them to have of donald trump. You think the media has been against donald trump on all those issues or has it been donald trump himself . What favors did he do himself by tweeting out something suggesting heidi cruz is unattractive . No, no, megyn, many of the people supporting donald trump, they dont go to social media and worry about that. But the media has an obligation to report things like that when it comes from a president ial candidate. Megyn, yes, theydo. I have watched this as closely as you have watched it. What im saying is many of the sound bites put out have been antiwomen messages and antiminority messages. When donald trump can direct his messages at those groups, i think hell be able to turn that around. Remember, polls represent trends. I dont discount the fact that maybe in the poll that was reported earlier that trump has basically held steady. That means his supporters did not lose enthusiasm. But for the fact that cruz has gone from 19 to 40 , thats suspect. My position is this on the polls, whether you talk about wisconsin or anybody else, let the voters do the talking. Theyre going to do the talking next tuesday in wisconsin. Am on ten to that. With Trumps Campaign manager facing criminal charges for grabbing a female reporter, theyre demanding hes fired. Thats next. And for the first time, one of the women at the heart of the sex scandal involving general David Petraeus is with us live. All that Michelle Fields asked for was an apology. And instead they start trashing her. And their mouthpieces on radio and tv. They start trashing her. Oh, look at her background. Smear her. Is this what the hell you want in the white house . That was conservative radio host mark levin sounding off about the unfolding case surrounding trump Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski, who is charged with simple battery after he grabbed breitbart reporter Michelle Fields. Today, a group of female journalists put out a letter demanding that trump remove lewandowski from the campaigning saying his emphasize what mark levin just said, that this is about how the Trump Campaign responded to a reporter after the we saw slander, smearing of her reputation simply for trying to do her jb ondents association released a statement after this incident occurred saying there should be no violence or intimidation of any reporter covering a 2016 campaign. The National Press Club President said the same thing. And yet here we are today with Corey Lewandowski and donald trump himself continuing to smear the character of a job in including Michelle Fields. And i dont think anybody on the Trump Campaign disagrees with that statement. I t encourage everybody else to watch the video. If you do, i think youll see that by doing that, nothing took place here that is. Saying they tried to pull her down. She stated she remained balanced and did not fall down, theyre suggesting she overstated what happened. Yes. I mean, that is for dana. Sorry. I think the only people who said she was attacked in any sort of way are using that phrase have been people trying to excuse the actions. She did say her arm was yanked to the ground but she can regain her balance. First off, as reported earlier, he admitted this, first, it was, i never saw her. You shouldnt hang your hat on that. There is a question on whether he admitted it or not. Even then, the police found probable cause to arrest him. I trust the police and not just on matters when it is convenience. What about the fact he hasnt been tried . He has presumption of innocence. I dont need a judge to tell me what i saw in the video was a load of bs. If someone would have put their hands on me that way it would have been a different outcome. Secret service is there to protect a candidate. You cant tell me they did not assess the people in the room and assess her as not being a threat. Well, lewendowski said it never happened. The Campaign Said it never happened. Donald trump said she made it up. What we see the tape. And no one says do you know what . This is a misunderstanding. He didnt realize this is a reporter, he saw somebody reaching for the candidate and tried to stop it. He is sorry she got hurt. Why did it have to get to this point . Ive been involved in this for a long time, and this is actually fairly common. Unfortunately, now, its been dumped into a court of law. We have to let that process the process that is the envy of the world work and see where we get. What about the go ahead. What, yes. Ive been in a press run, too and elbowed and i have told reporters watch your elbow or youre going to get one back. This is what is different. I have never seen a Campaign Manager goes on a twoday rant. That is meant to send a message to her that theyre going to come after her and let it be stated for the record this man is the same man who called up the Fox News Bureau chief and threatened yours truly. And said what would happen if yours truly happened and so i asked you, whether its time for mr. Trump to do something about mr. Lewandowski. I go back to this situation. The point theyve been in this situation many times. And i said were going down a bad road here that moving forward, anybody that gets elbowed in the midst of a press room can find a bad precedent. The bad precedent is the person is gas lighting and smearing and because they were caught on video doing something they never said they did. This is for you. Youre all going to have a tough time. Youve shot yourself in the foot. How can you continue to cover the president ial race now . With due respect this
