People were killed either in israeli mill take or civilians, or hamas fighters but we do understand that there are casualties on both sides. Here in gaza we have seen increased shelling and fighting here in the last two hours or so. As i said, there was a relative calm this weekend but about the last two, three hours weve really seen a pickup in the fighting or so. There was an air strike or some type of explosion near gazas main hospital and by a park there. There both hamas and israel blame the other for these explosion. But what we do know, not who caused the explosion but what we do know is that at least ten people were killed, nine of those are children. Dozens more were injured. This was a park, this was a hospital at both of these sites and theres really been a backandforth about who caused the fighting. We also know that at least four zerl israelis, we think, soldiers were killed in a mortar attack fired from gaza. Again, we dont know all of the specifics. But what we do know, this crossborder infiltration, the mortar attacks, the rocket attacks and air strikes, these were things we were not sooen seeing really this weekend. It looked like this weekend wed see some type of truce. Maybe not a longterm truce but sort of a truce by both sides unofficially. But right now we are seeing a massive escalation of fighting here just a few minutes ago. Five minutes ago Prime Minister netanyahu was on television justifying the fight here saying the goal here is not only to destroy the tunnels but to break hamas. If thats a new goal to sort of completely neuter hamas going forward, that means a major escalation is in the works here in gaza. A lot of activity. Conon powell, thanks for the live update. President obama calling on israeli prl nime minister netanu for an immediate ceasefire. While mr. Obama repeated his support for israel, theres growing criticism now of the white house and of secretary of state john kerry. Some say the ceasefire proposals favor hamas too much. Joining me now, a former political advisor to senator frank lauterberg and david avela from go pac. I would be a hypocrite if i were to blame president bush 10 or 15 years ago for dictating to what they should do with gaza. I would be the same hypocrite to not criticize barack obama today. Israelis did not start this. They are under siege. To have a ceasefire for hamas only benefits hamas today because hamas would have a chance to rearm, catch its breath and continue to fire rockets at israel. Israelis have lived under siege since 1948 since their existence and hamas continues to try to attempt israels annihilation. If mexico or canada were to fire rockets into our country,ky only imagine the reaction our country would have. For us to dictate to the israelis is unacceptable. Aside from that, not to mix apples and oranges, but mexico did fire on Border Agents about a month ago and nothing did apparently happen. But lets stick to israel and gaza and hamas right now, david. What do y think secretary kerry and president obama need to do now . It is hard to imagine that the president is trying to line up with the only three allies that hamas has in this fight, which is the new york times, cnn and msnbc. And what the president ought to be doing is sending john kerry to a kibbutz like i went last year and spend some time with israelis who live every day with missiles being potentially fired into their village and in fact the kibbutz i was in on july 11st of this year did get bombed with missiles. You see the anguish. You see the stress thats on those mothers faces as they think every time an alarm sounds theyve got 60 seconds to get their kids into shelter. Whats the difference about this fight . Now that were dealing with hamas, right . For the general public whos watching this who may think that it is the Palestinian People being represented by hamas, you say what . Well, first of all, hamas is harming the Palestinian People more they ever could. The people that i feel bad for are the Palestinian People. Theyre living at the mercy of this terrorist organization more than anybody else even israelis. So the palestinians dont confuse the Palestinian People with actions of hamas. Secondly, the problem with hamas and the problem with the palestinians are going through theyve been misled by their leadership and by their supposed regional allies since 1948. And so for anybody to say that hamas is on the side of the palestinians, that Yasser Arafat back in the day was on the side of the palestinians, that egypt, jordan, even allies like egypt and jordan, american allies, syria, iran, that these people since 1948 were on the side of the Palestinian People. Theyve done more to harm the Palestinian People than anybody ever could. So secretary kerry still going to try to iron something out here. Im not exactly sure what at this time, but the president , david, the president is asking israel for a ceasefire. So how should they respond . The president and should revoke john kerrys passport and stay out of this. That the president ought to allow the israelis to do what they need to do to defend themselves and i think julie made an outstanding point. Ones who are really getting hurt here, beyond the israeli families, is the palestinian families. Just as a mother in israel should allow her child to grow up, so should a palestinian mother. And the only way that happens is if they, too, take on hamas and take on these terror organizations. Theyre doing more to hurt their future than israel is. David, julie, thanks for the insights. Charles payne is the host of making money with charles payne. What do you make of the merger . Theres been some rumblings over these Dollar Stores for the last few months because theyve sort of fallen on hard times. In the case of Family Dollar, they just expanded too much. It was a company that benefited and at the initial stages of the Great Recession because everyone started shopping at Dollar Stores. Didnt matter how poorly you ran your store, people went to them. Anybody whos seen a Family Dollar and dollar tree, theyre like night and day. Think it is a great deal for both companies and i think it is going to be a pretty good deal for consumers. How do you feel in general about mergers. The first thing that comes to my mind is reduced competition. You brought up walmart. They are the behemoth of all behemoths. I think this will be good for consumers in that the ultimate company will have greater purchasing power, lower prices, and can pass that on to consumers. The airlines have consolidated though to the point where were at their mercy. I cant think of any other industry in america where the service has gotten worse but the prices have gone up. In the meantime, new charges today that prorussian separatists are trying to manipulate the wreckage of the malaysian airliner that theyre also accused of shooting down. So new heavy fighting near the crash site delaying an International Police team from actually getting there to help. Ukraines foreign minister blaming this squarely on the separatists. He says theyre trying to wipe out any trace of their involvement in the cash. Steve harrigan live for us in kiev, ukraine. Steve. Reporter gretchen, for the second day in a row, International Experts trying to reach that crash site had to turn around due to fighting. It was more than 30 dutch unarmed Police Officers, as well as australians trying to make their way to provide security so the investigation of that crash site could really begin. Unfortunately, most of the International Experts havent even reached the crash site 11 days in. Thats due to heavy fighting. That 13square mile crash site zone is the front line in a battle between Ukrainian Government forces, as well as russianbacked rebels. Both sides have heavy artillery and tanks so it is really a fight there and a nonstarter for those experts trying to reach the scene. The russians continue to deny helping the rebels in any way, either supplying them with weapons or direct firing into the fight. This despite recently released satellite images by the u. S. State department which assert that russia is firing its own rockets from russian territory against ukrainian positions. Right now Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman saying this is part after Smear Campaign by the wednesday against russia, that russia is in fact not helping the rebels or taking a direct part in this fight. Gretchen, back to you. Steve harrigan live for us in ukraine, thank you. So that plane crash over ukraine and the faa move banning flights to and from israel last week raising fears about missile attacks against our own planes. So thats sparking some lawmakers to call for this action. Its clear we need to take a new look at what we should do to arm our passenger airliners against being shot down by an antiaircraft missile or shoulderheld miss. If israel can do it, we can do it. The military does it. Civil aviation should do it. It is just a matter of guesting smarter to prevent a catastrophe. So is that practical for United States airlines and how expensive would it be in joining me now, andrew thomas, editor in chief of the journal of transportation security and author of soft landing, Airline Industry strategy, service and safety. Mr. Thompson, if economical, is it feasible for u. S. Airlines to incorporate a Missile Defense system on all u. S. Airplanes . The short answer is no. This issue has come back again. It was floated around post9 11 and the numbers boeing did a study. Others have as well. Looks like it cost about 50 billion to outfit all commercial airliners that fly within the United States. And at the same time, in addition to 50 billion, theres not a lot of assurance that it would work, meaning that if a missile was fired in an ant antimissile system was deployed from a commercial aircraft. With the budgets situation we are, it is not really, to answer your question, again, it is not feasible. I meant to call you mr. Thomas. Andrew thomas. No worries. We were just showing this video of what el al planes have, the israeli airlines. You can see the rocket missile, shoulder missile being fired. Then the chopper is armed with this kind of a Missile Defense system and it is able to deflect it before it even gets close to it. So i dont know if you can see that or not. I know you are familiar with it. You actually say that being armed the planes being armed with this type of thing could increase catastrophic activity. In what way . Well, its risk. Its ultimately security is about managing risk and as is safety. A lot of these sis tells, in fact the ones that were considered at one time in the post9 11 era here in the United States involved the deployment of flares if it was detected a missile had been launched against a commercial airliner. Putting flares which are inherently combustible on a commercial airliner inherently increase the risk of something going wrong. As our esteemed representatives in congress have failed to say, el al, to their credit, they are very secure as an airline. They fly as many planes in one year as we fly in one day in this country. So the cost isnt even weve heard all those arguments. They have amazing security. But if we did that weden standing in line for five hours before we got on the flight. What about the cost with regard to more weight on the plane with these kinds of devices . More fuel consumption. Maybe less baggage. Maybe less people onboard. And people on the ground manning these types of systems. Correct . Yeah. Really this 50 billion cost includes not just simply putting the stuff on the plane but it also requires training for maintenance of this which would the legacy costs which would extend into billions of dollars more. So again, these are members of congress being reactionary. I think theyre getting some bad counsel from their staff. Maybe they just want the air time which were giving them right now. It is really kind after non sequitur. It was a question as to whether wed be safer for that and who would pay for it. Andrew thomas, thank you so much for your analysis today. Thank you gretchen carlson. You got it right. You didnt say greta. Thank you. Are you tired dealing with cat calls or unwanted comments while you might be walking down the street . Trace gallagher live in los angeles with the latest on this huge mystery. So trace, what were you able to find out . Well, that circle k gas station you talked about is about ten minutes from where jennifer houston lives. She was seen on surveillance tape there. She also swiped her credit card and police say it appeared at the time that she was alone. But shortly after that her phone was turned off and her credit card has not been used since. Phone records also show that she did not make any unusual phone calls or texts before she disappeared. She was apparently supposed to go from the gas station to the market and then home. But she and her 1999 lexus suv just vanished. Her father says that she did not just run off and leave her family. Listen. Shes not coming home because she cant come home. A worst parents fear. So now volunteers, as you can see, pictures are out, kind of plastering these missing posters all over the place. Theyre checking rural dirt roads and outlying areas. The family has also started a Facebook Page thats so far gotten some 40,000 hits. Jennifer houston was last seen wearing yoga pants, nike running shoes. Shes 57 and she has, as you can see, blonde hair and blue eyes. Beyond that, there is very little to go on at this stage of the game. We are talking almost 3, 3 1 2 days since she went missing. Its not just a sedan. Its a subaru. Welcome back to the real story. The crisis on our southern border coming to a head in washington. It is going to happen. This week with congress struggling to pass some kind of Immigration Reform before leaving town friday for the august recess. So in a recent interview that may offer a preview of 2016, Hillary Clinton spoke out strongly against republican wishes to make any legislative changes, saying, i dont agree that we should change the law. Im advocating an appropriate procedure well funded by the congress which they are resisting doing so that we can make individual decisions. All right, chris. So obviously this is something that Hillary Clinton would think very strongly about before she would utter any word about because she probably plans to run for president. Right . Well, well put it this way. Shes running for president. She may decide to stop running for president but for the time being shes doing everything that people running for president do and it is a large, expensive and complicated undertaking, especially for her and her baggage. Part of her baggage with her party is that she is seen as too moderate of a democrat. Her husband was widely reviled by liberal democrats for many too centrist. That is the big knock on Hillary Clinton. So for her, she has to carefully calculate her candidacy. She has to figure out who is it that shes talking to in the democratic. Base and certainly taking a position that is to the left of the president s, technically speaking, though he probably agrees with her in principle, that is to the left of his stated policy is a way to say to liberal democrats, i, too, favor very per missive immigration laws. It is interesting because some might argue that if she were to ever make it past the primary and be the nominee, that she would then change her position because people do see her as more of a moderate, especially than president obama. Right . Well, certainly more than president obama. The challenge for her is how shes very hawkish on Foreign Policy compared to president obama and the democratic base. She is more moderate on a host of issues so she has to find these notes. Shes sort of like an lbj kind of democrat. Shes going to run probably as a fairly big government, fairly liberal person on domestic policy, fairly aggressive overseas, at least by modern democratic standards. Shes got to thread that needle and it is just not going to be very easy because her own party is very suspicious of her on these issues. At the same time we have president obama continuing to well, i guess deal with the immigration or wait until the end of the summer. Were not quite sure. But it is interesting to look back to november at a speech when he was heckled by an undocumented immigrant from south korea who wanted him to do something more about the immigration issue. Listen to this. You have power to stop deportation for all thats why heres here. If in fact i could solve all these problems without passing laws in congress, then i would do so. But were also a nation of laws. Thats part of our tradition. And so the easy way out is to try to yell and pretend like i can do something, by violating our laws. But thats interesting, chris i know. Its interesting because that was only november and now weve heard a lot about the action of pen and paper and the president now saying just a short time later, look, if congress doesnt do anything, by the end of the august recess, i will. Well, and what that will be, who knows. Sometimes his pen and a phone dont really do anything. Hes just trying to make noise. Other times he makes substantive changes. The idea of stopping deportations though would be a very dramatic step and it would engender a lot of backlash. Remember, the worst thing for a secondterm president to be, for a lake duck president to be, is irrelevant. So this is a president who hasnt had much in the way of accomplishments in his second term. Has had mostly problems in his second term so far and he doesnt have a way to get in the game because he pretty much either refuses or is unable to engage with congress. So he is sort of running out of options. We will have to wait to see when any decision comes. We now have a new nominee for ambassador at large for International Religious freedom. Well, it was a long time in the making. Some nine months. But theres controversy surrounding this new nominee and Shannon Breen is live in washington to explain. Shannon, what do we know about this new nominee . Well, gretchen, he is a well respected lawyer, scholar and rabbi. He was elected to be the very first chair of the u. S. Commission on International Religious freedom and it was a rare unanimous vote in congress back in 1999. Today, heres how secretary of state john kerry described him. When it comes to the work of protecting religious freedom, it is safe to say that David Saperstein represents the gold standard. Think about the progress of the last 20 years in elevating this fight, and david has been at the lead every step of the way. Kerry went on to say that he looks forward to a rapid confirmation through the senate. Why are critics saying he may in fact have a bumpy road getting through the senate . First, on a radio show a few days ago, saperstein spoke out against the hobby lobby decision in which the Supreme Court held that the government cannot force corporations to provide costfree access to contraceptives that the can. Owners believe cause abortions in violation of their religious convictions. The real problem is the hobby lobby case. By giving religious exemptions to a broad category of employers, millions of employers in this country and allowing they will to make religious claims to discriminate on the basis of religion, this is deeply, deeply troubling. It really is a deeply, deeply alarming pandoras box thats been open here. Just days ago sapersteins organization signed on to a letter to the president urging him not to give religious employers any type of exemption from the lgbt executive order the president signed last week. Gretchen . All right. He would be the ambassador at large for International Religious freedom. Interesting. Shannon, thank you so much. New york city cracking down on spiderman, along with elmo, cookie monster and captain america even . Whats going on . Guess what . Theyre aggressively pan handling in times square. Not the real guys. Spiderman ended up up behind bars over the weekend after he punched a Police Officer over the weekend. Laura ingle is live in times square. Watch out, laura, it is dangerous out there reporter i know. Well, the thing about this whole thing, gretchen, is that you just never know who is behind these masks. Right . Well, a man over the weekend dressed as spiderman allegedly tried to bilk a tourist out of some money. A cop overhead an exchange and warned the woman that she only had to give what she thought was right. Well, thats when things got a little dicey, according to police, who say that this guy dressed as spiderman allegedly said to him to mind his own bleeping business and then allegedly punched the officer in the head so he was later arrested on charges of assault, resisting arrest, criminal miss chief and disorderly conduct. Three other people were also arrested in this. This is just the latest incident in a long list thats now growing of things that have happened like this in the past. You might remember in april a man dressed as the cookie monster was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after allegedly shoving a 2 1 2yearold boy, also this year another spiderman was allegedly arrested for grown pi. Later that same week a completely different spiderman was arrested for something else. As far as them asking for a tip, thats pretty difficult to regulate as far as the law is concerned because theyre not breaking any laws that are really on the books. Fighting cat calls by shaming the culprits with your phone. A new app called holla back encouraging women to record harassment on the street and post them online as part of a campaign to raise awareness against harassment. Guys came up to me. Getting in my face. Too close. They pretty much started harassing us in every sexual way possible. Started calling me a whchlt hore. He was rubbing himself up against me. You dont really know whats going to happen. If it is going to turn violent. Joining me now, the Deputy Director of holla back. Great to see you. Explain the name first, holla back. Holla back is a way that in which people can feel empowered in responding to street harassers. It gets the power back to the individual because often harassment takes that power away. It can be a silencing mechanism used by harassers when youre walking down the street or if youre riding the subway in the morning. Holla back is a way to say we take the power back. Thats something we can do in response. Youve been in existence since 2005 but it all started somebody using their cell phone device doing what . Yes. So a woman was riding the new york city subway if 2005 when a man started masturbating right across from her and staring at her. She thought, okay, i guess ill take a picture of him and take it to the police, which she did. And she went to the police and the police say, well, im sorry, man maam, theres nothing we can do about that. She thought ill take matters into my own hands and upload the photo on to flflckr at the time. The cofounders of holla back saw this happening and thought why dont we do Something Like this instead of a blogging platform so people can share their stories and upload photographs. Youre now in 79 locations, 26 countries. You function in 14 different languages. One of your missions is to change or shift Public Opinion about this. What do you say to the people who say, oh, its not that big of a deal if youre walking down the street and somebody says something to you. Yeah, that happens all the time. A lot of people still dont identify it as a problem. It really does impact, especially young women and girls. It impacts their sense of selfesteem, their ability to walk down the street and feel safe. Our motto is that everyone has the right to feel safe when walking down the street. When youre walking to school, you shouldnt have to deal with someone driving a car next to you and going can i get your phone number . Thats absolutely unacceptable. Is there any fine line for you . Say you walk down the street and somebody says, oh, beautiful smile, or i love your dress, is that acceptable . It depends on the person whos on the receiving end. For some people thats fine, theyll just keep on moving on. But then we found people get very persistent with it. Harassers usually have a sense of entitlement. It is an issue of power and if you dont respond in a favorable way it could turn ugly really fast. You say its become culturally acceptable, that we know what a cat call is. Everyone knows what that is. So you say to take the power back by putting the power back on them, so to speak, by recording it. This past weekend i had the opportunity to visit newtown connecticut, the placey a year and a half ago two dozen children were killed at sandy hook elementary school. My daughter and i went to a piece of lan that will soon book a 35acre Animal Sanctuary in honor of one of the little girls who died. Katherine violet hubbard. Heres a bit of our amazing weekend experience. Last year, after the sandy hook tragedy, my then tenyearold daughter gave a piano recitele in honor of the newtown victims. He played 11 classical pieces to raise money for grace mcdonalds art foundation, and katherine hubbards Animal Sanctuary. The trees back here are going to be for kids. Just one year later the hand has been secured, and katherines mom, jenny, showed us the area where the animals will eventually live. The barn is going to we keep all the farm animals, and i would love to see it see if it works out have it be like charlottes web, where all the animals live in a community and a place they can find safe haven for the rest of their life. The hope is to open the sanctuary in 2016. For School Children to visit for field trips and families to come to remember. We look at this as a very symbolic place where suffering ends and peace begins. Once you cross that bridge theres a new beginning for all the animals, and we hope the same for the people that cross that bridge as well. When i feel the sanctuary, i see catherine, whether its a butterfly or a deer, its her, and its her spirit that continues to live on. Amazing courage by a mom who is still grieving at the loss of her beautiful child. Also my daughter has been asked to serve on the childrens Advisory Board for the sanctuary there she is, pictured with those two brave women. And we are grateful to be part of this project.
