List that had three names on it and was characterized as a kill list. Have you connected any dots not that i know of. Other than the names on the kill list, did it say anything else . No, just the names. Any indication either professor expected him to go to campus . I mean basically had no business he was done. He graduated in 13. He had been living in minnesota for a number of years. I dont think either of them expected to see him. Chief, do you know how long he was on campus before the shooting happened and were there any reports prior to the shooting of a man with a gun or a backpack or anything that could have led police to him . We dont know how long he had been on campus. I would assume it was a brief amount of time, but thats just an assumption. We may find more evidence to that when we recover the vehicle in that we will find out when it was parked. Or possibly find out when it was parked. So theres nothing to indicate that there was any prior activity. We didnt have any prior calls that i know of, although, remember, ucla has their own campus police, so they there may be something i dont know about. But certainly i didnt get any information when i arrived at the scene about prior calls. The only calls that i know of were the multiple calls that went out when the three rounds were heard by adjoining classrooms. And then we had a lot of followup sightings that all were determined to be falses af investigation began. There have been some posts online that eluded to. [ inaudible ] is that something you were looking at . That appears to be his motive. Now when i say his motive, theres nothing factual to this. Ucla we have discussed this with ucla, and ucla says there is no truth to this. This was a making of his own imagination. So we believe that that may certainly be what was the causal factor but we dont think there is any basis in fact for it. [ inaudible question ]. Thats hard to say at this point in the investigation. Certainly he had enough rounds of ammunition on him, enough two pistols. Could have caused many more fatalities than the one. Were still trying to piece together his movements through surveillance video, witness interviews, that kind of thing. So well know better if he did search for the other professor first or if but we dont know. He may have went to this one first and that was all he could take. Adam, a lot of interesting details coming out of this press conference. Reporter yeah. We expect a lot more out of this press conference. The headlines in this conference is that they are still looking for theissan sentra but also that he had two handguns with him. He was prepared to engage more people according to the police chief here in los angeles. Thankfully he did not but he was heavily armed when they found him. About 25 hours ago, the shooting happened here. Three shots were fired at the engineering building, ucla, causing massive response. About an hour and a half later it was determined it was a murder suicide. At that scene a note was find. Mainak sarkar, the suspect in this case, left a note saying check on his cat back in minnesota. So as part of the investigation, they called minnesota authorities. They went to his house there, they found a cat, they found another note with a kill list of three names, including another ucla professor besides william klug who was killed here and a womans that im. They went to the womans home in the minneapolis area. They found her dead. And that is where this is all playing out now. They do believe that he killed her at some point obviously in previous days, then drove here in that Nissan Sentra to los angeles. They believe only for a short time was he on campus here but theyre still going through video and witnesses to find out what his movements were. But he came here to kill. He killed the professor, and then killed himself. The interesting thing is that the chief gave a lot of details about the fact that there was the name of a second professor on that kill list and that they have been in touch with him. He just happened to not be on campus yesterday, according to the chief of police. Is that what you heard as well . Yeah. We heard the same thing. The professor, according to what weve been told, that professor who was not killed thankfully said that he had had issues with this student. When you look at some of the writings this student is allegedly to have made online there are a lot of them posted out there, some have been taken out. It is reported now by a lot of International Papers because he did his undergraduate work in india. Some of the postings are r rambli rambling, they dont make a lot of sense. He blames a professor here from taking his i. D. Card and giving it to another student. It didnt make any sense when you read through them. Thats why chief beck was very careful when the way he described the student and the actual interaction or problems he had with professors. It may not have been as simple a bad grade. There may have been a deeper meaning here of a student having some mental issues or something along those lines. Especially when you try to search for motives. Sarkar graduated in 2013 from ucla, then had moved up to st. Paul, minnesota. Parentally these grudges or mental issues or whatever it was were three years old. Reporter it may have also been some ongoing connection here with the doctoral program. Thats something weve been trying to clarify because we first heard about this yesterday. What he actually still officially a doctoral student, was there some grey area there. But it sounds like there were still some connections here, clearly, he may have been doing his work here. He definitely killed a woman, somebody he was connected to, in the minnesota area, then got in his Nissan Sentra, which they have not found. Drove here with multiple magazines, loose bullets. Shot the professor, potentially looked for the other professor though theres been some suggestion of that even from charlie beck that that may have happened. Then killed himself. Obviously a lot of concern here at ucla. A lot of hard eartbreak here. Professor klug was very liked. By all accounts a very quiet man, very liked, very supportive of student. Coached Little League baseball in a town nearby and had two small children. It is such a shame. I hate to say that it could have been so much worse, but sounds like it could have been because of the amount of ammunition that sarkar had with him in his backpack. Right . And the number of weapons that he had, two semiautomatic weapons, maybe more, but certainly tons of ammunition.
