The two president ial frontrunners tackling the biggest issues of our time abortion, immigration, the economy and age. She challenged me to a golf match. He cant hit a ball 50 yards. I think im in very good shape. I told you before, im happy to play golf. If you carry your own bag, i think you can do it. Before the debate, the big question was, would President Joe Bidens age be a liability . Now members of his own party are asking, can he be replaced on the ticket . That is not a way you want to walk out of a debate. That is not the republicans questioning whether you should be up there. Its your own party. And good evening to you. Im ama daetz and im julian glover, both candidates certainly made history tonight. Yes. It was the first time a sitting president and a former president ever debated and the earliest debate ever between two leading candidates. Abc News Reporter Christiane Cordero is in atlanta with a look at how that debate went. After four years of waiting, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump squaring off once again in this first debate of the president ial campaign. It took Trump Supporters just minutes to target bidens age. Following this pause, dealing with everything we have to do with, look, if we president also sounding hoarse, his team says he has a cold for 90 minutes. Biden and trump were peppered with questions on the issues impacting americans. Biden pledging to protect abortion rights. No politician should be making that decision a doctor should be making those decisions. Thats how it should be run. Thats what youre going to do. And if im elected, im going to restore roe v wade and accusing trump of sparking the january 6th attack on the capitol. And now he says if he loses again such a winery that he is, that could be a bloodbath. Trump hammering biden on inflation. The jobs went down and then they bounced back and hes taking credit for bounce back jobs. You cant do that, he also said he inherited 9 inflation. Now he inherited almost no inflation. And it stayed that way for 14 months. And promising to crack down on illegal border crossings. We have a border thats the most dangerous place anywhere in the world. Consider the most dangerous place anywhere in the world. And he opened it up at stake. With just over four months left in the campaign season, millions of voters unenthused by their choices. The next and final president ial debate, hosted by abc news, is scheduled for tuesday, september 10th. Christiane cordero, abc news, atlanta. Governor gavin newsom shared his reaction just after the debate. He was there in the spin room in atlanta and made it clear he was just there as a supporter of the president , not an aspiring 2024 candidate. I spent a lot of time with him. I know joe biden. I know what hes accomplished in the last three and a half years, i know what hes capable of, and i know his vision, and i have no, no trepidation. Newsom was live tweeting and Fact Checking Donald Trumps statements during the president ial debate, and we just spoke with our abc seven news insider, phil matier, on the candidates performance tonight and how it will weigh on voters minds going forward. Joe biden, president , went in to debate donald trump. The idea was to best trump he walked out with triggering a debate within his own party about whether he should continue being the candidate. Its being openly discussed tonight. That is not a way you want to walk out of a debate. No matter. That is not the republicans questioning whether you should be up there. Its your own party, members of your own party. Now, a lot of this is backroom chatter right now. Well see if it manifests itself. But, you know, there is a difference between being a politician and an elected official and being a candidate. You can be a capable president or a capable mayor, but you can also be a not a bad candidate. And tonight, joe biden was a bad candidate. Donald trump was not a great candidate. You could say he was a bad candidate. But the trump that walked in there with a snarl on his face is the donald trump that weve seen on television and radio for the past eight years. There was no new surprises. The joe biden that walked out there. And for many people, that was their first look at him after issues came up about his age and what they saw was off putting to say the least. And he says biden needs to work on his ability to connect with people instead of just listing off statistics of his president ial wins. Multiple watch parties were hosted in the bay area tonight. This one was at mannys in San Franciscos Mission district. It came with a progressive perspective. The invite warns trumps america would give tax breaks to the ultra wealthy and rip away womens reproductive freedoms, whereas they say bidens vision would protect freedoms and give americans a fair shot. And at keysers pub on stanyan street in San Francisco, a watch party represents the other side of the political aisle. Organizers claim it has the place to be for bay area conservatives. Tonight they had some local candidates join them for their own commentary on all the discourse. A third party candidate, Robert F Kennedy jr, hosted his own real debate from a studio in los angeles tonight. It was streamed on social media. Kennedy blamed both former President Donald Trump and President Biden for running up the deficit that is causing high inflation. President trump came into office promising to balance the budget instead, he spent more money in office than every president in United States history combined. As biden is, will beat him. Hes already run up 6. 3 trillion in debt, and by the time he leaves office, hell have run up more than president trump. Analysts say the debt under each administration was due to both partizan and bipartisan policies. Kennedy failed to qualify to join the president ial debate tonight because of his low poll numbers. So far. His Economic Policy proposals include raising the federal minimum wage and expanding free child care. Well, abc news fact checked both biden and trumps claims during the debate. You can find that, along with reaction from the republican and democratic parties, its all on our website. Just head to abc seven news. Com. A sports bar in San Franciscos sunset neighborhood took on the nfl and won. A jury found the league violated antitrust laws with their sunday ticket subscription. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry tells us what this means for sports bars and fans. Nestled right on ninth avenue near irving street is mucky duck. Its your typical sports bar neon beer signs in the window, fans sitting at the counter and signs telling you theyve got the game on. But the owners of this San Francisco bar just secured a major victory. Its david and goliath, i love it. Its amazing. The bar is the david. The goliath is the National Football league. On thursday, a jury ruled the league violated antitrust laws with their sunday ticket subscription. That package allowed people at home and businesses to watch every nfl game. However, it was only available through one provider, and the lawsuit says the league sold it at an inflated price. The deal that sunday ticket and the nfl had always struck me as unfair. Robert freund practices e commerce law and says this subscription was hurting consumers. The prices are just thrust upon them. Heres the deal. Take it or leave it. And thats really exactly the point of why antitrust laws exist. Those consumers include noah roberts, who works at little shamrock around the corner from mucky duck. He says the sunday ticket subscription was not the best for their business. You want to be able to have every game on and then when one league just charges it, an insane amount of money, your hands are tied because yeah, you have to put it on. And then two, youre losing money. So what do you do . Do you lose the fans . Do you you know, not sell beer. What do you do . The league now has to pay over 4 billion in damages. The owners of mucky duck did not want to comment because the nfl is planning on appealing this decision. They said in a statement we will certainly contest this decision as we believe that the class action claims in this case are baseless and without merit. But until that appeal goes through, those we spoke with say what mucky duck did is a win for sports bars and consumers everywhere. I think its awesome that they took it on themselves. Represents the inner sunset, represents San Francisco, and then also to just, you know, promote the entire country, you know, win that war. And it just represents the neighborhood bars everywhere, a neighborhood bar where watching a game should not come with a heavy price tag in San Francisco. Ryan curry, abc seven news. Happening tomorrow, Oakland City Council is set to hold a special budget meeting. Tomorrow is the deadline to pass a balanced budget, but Council Members tell us they will likely ask for an extension until june the 30th. In may, oakland mayor chen tao submitted a proposed budget which includes more than 100 million from the sale of the Oakland Coliseum property. But just on tuesday, the finance department submitted a revised Budget Proposal that does not include that money. Since the sale is not yet final, its expected that either way, oakland will face a major deficit and budget cuts the next several years in the east bay, and Newark City Council member abruptly resigned, effective today. The reason why is interesting, though. On facebook, mike bucci explains his familys uh his family saying, writing, unfortunately, were just the next people in a long line of folks who have been priced out of town. We tried to buy a home a number of times over the years, but it never happened for us. Now the window has closed and any chance we had to stay in newark is long past. Bucci was first elected to the Newark City Council in november of 2014. Tonight, Newark City Council decided to invite applicants to fill the seat until a special election can be held come november. So this is an unprecedented for councils to fill these positions. And if we want to continue to do the peoples business without pause or delay, i think we need to fill that position. The council will hold a special meeting on july the 8th to interview the applicant, and also confirm their selection. A live look outside.
