So we are cloudy to start out. Temperatures are in the low 60s in oakland and hayward, a little muggy out there. Its certainly not cool. But as we look outside, youll notice that it is dark out there and well see temperatures stay in the 60s through 9 00, noontime. Were in the 70s inland, elsewhere mid 60s to upper 60s. And by the afternoon low to mid 80s for our warmest inland valleys. Its a bit below average and well have those breezy winds as well. Well here at abc7 bay area, we are working to build a better bay area as a part of those efforts. We want to highlight the festivals and events, bringing the community together. Weve seen it with the bhangra and beats market, the carnival at Civic Center Plaza and now one in the sunset. Despite safety concerns, people are helping Small Businesses get back on their feet through these events. As abc7 News Reporter tim johns tells us, the night market in the sunset might be the biggest one yet. Food, shopping and music were all present in San Franciscos sunset district friday for the first time ever, the neighborhood hosting an asian inspired night market. Night markets bring people together. They make streets safer and they give a boost to Small Businesses. Supervisor Joel Engardio is the man who brought the market to life. He says he got the idea after visiting similar night markets in taiwan on a normal friday night. The streets of the sunset can be pretty quiet, but as you can see, thanks to the new night market, they are very much alive. I love it. Ive never seen anything. I grew up here in a sunset and this is the first ive ever seen a night market happen. So its really special. Paula mak says she thinks events like this are exactly what the city needs to combat its struggling image, not just for local residents, but also for Small Businesses, many of whom said the market is a Good Opportunity for them to expand their customer base. I saw a lot of promotion for it online, but i think this is maybe something that San Francisco is lacking right now after hosting a successful Dreamforce Convention earlier in the week, city Officials Say its important to also remember local neighborhoods. This is really the locals. This is people who live in the avenues of San Francisco. The various neighborhood groups and the business is that the local Community Supports and giving the seeming success of this trial run. Engardio says he hopes to bring the night market back for more. We want to have night markets every month in the sunset. So this is where were going to figure out what works, what doesnt. Give us your feedback, and were going to make them even better all next year in San Francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. In the east bay now, the top cop in san leandro is on leave. Hes accused of violating department policy. The city says police chief Abdul Pridgen was placed on paid administrative leave this week. It did not state why, though. The city of san leandro says a Third Party Firm will conduct a formal investigation. Pridgen has been chief at san leandro for the past two years and was formerly the chief of police in seaside near monterey. Three teenagers arrested for a shooting at Skyline High School in oakland are now charged in connection with the case. That shooting happened on the campus in the Oakland Hills last week. No one was hurt. Alameda County District attorney pamela price announced the charges in a recorded message friday. Many people are concerned that we are not doing enough to hold young people accountable. We should all also be concerned that we are not doing enough to deflect young people from criminal activity. Price says the gunfire at skyline appears to have been an isolated incident. She did not say what charges the teens are facing. Oakland is facing more criticism from the community after missing a deadline to apply for a state Crime Prevention grant. Governor gavin newsom signed off on major funding this week. The money will go to 55 cities across california for efforts combating organized retail theft. San francisco will receive 17 million. Business owners are disappointed after oakland was disqualified fillled because it had failed to submit its application by the deadline. Chp says the city will likely still benefit from work in other bay area cities. We will be working together with all the allied agencies in the bay area and that will benefit the community of oakland. Whether or not they were awarded or grant or not. We currently are doing organized retail crime efforts in the city of oakland and so that wont change. Oakland Officials Say they will be looking at other grants to fight retail crime. The Oakland Branch of the naacp is calling for accountability and plans to host a press conference on monday. On the peninsula now , palo alto will receive that state funding. The Police Department said a plan for how it will spend its 5. 2 million. It will staff extra patrols, including undercover operations, over the next three years. In popular shopping areas like the Stanford Shopping Center and downtown palo alto. Patrol cars are also expected to have new technology which attaches gps tags to cars. So theyre monitored in case the driver tries to get away. And if youre headed out on bart today, you will enjoy the new round of fleet cars. Its the first weekend with the new speedy schedule. Saturday and sunday service is now 20 minutes on all five lines until 9 p. M. After that, it will be 20 minutes service on three lines. This new service has been in place since monday, helping bart reach the highest single day ridership since the start of the pandemic. You can also expect to late service from levis stadium if youre attending the ed sheeran concert tonight. Santa clara is turning into the concert mecca of the bay area. Speaking of ed sheeran plays at levis stadium tonight. And if the show sells out, it means roughly 70,000 people will be in attendance. Thats more than taylor swift and beyonce. Were talking about massively more people heading for santa clara this weekend, something about the same size of the super bowl. The buzz was felt in oakland friday where sheeran made his first of two bay area stops at the historic fox theater. Sheeran show is sold out as well, but Bay Area News Group music critic Jim Harrington says sheeran stage setup will help his show. Peak 70,000 fans with beyonce and taylor. You were looking at massive stage set ups that blocked a huge portion of the seats. On the other hand, youve got ed sheeran whos doing in the round, so you can absolutely sell 360. And that benefit not only means sheeran will outsell swift and beyonce, but he may break the levis concert attendance record set at the 2015 grateful dead concert with 76,000 fans and the all time crowd at levis for wrestlemania at 77,000. He says you dont have to be a professional, but you do have to be creative. Across the state now, drivers could see speed cameras and automated tickets sooner than later. According to sfgate, Assembly Bill 645 is now on governor Gavin Newsoms desk, waiting for a signature. The bill authorizes the use of speed cameras capable of ticketing california drivers. Heres how it would work. If youre going 11mph or more over the limit, you could get a ticket without being pulled over. If passed, the Pilot Program would begin in San Francisco, oakland and san jose. New developments out of hawaii now. State authorities are lowering the number of deaths from the maui wildfires. Now 97 people are confirmed dead. Previously, government officials believed 115 people died in the fires, but further testing showed they were working with multiple dna samples from the same people. So far, 74 of the deceased have been positively identified. The number of missing people is also down from 41 to 31. Cal fire is warning Drone Operators to keep their aircrafts away from these wildfires. The fire agency says drones have already forced aerial firefighting efforts to stop at least six incidents so far. This year. Emergency crews are forced to stop water and retardant drops to avoid the risk of midair collision as in 2021. A drone forced to air attack firefighters to halt early stage work on the dixie fire.
