All right, answer thank you so much. Highway patrol officers are reviewing dash camera footage that shows a fatal collision between a chp cruiser and a pedestrian who was walking on highway 92 last night. The collision happened at 10 p. M. At the delaware street overcrossing chp officers say that the driver was driving a suspected dui driver back to the station when the pedestrian walked into the eastbound lanes of traffic. That pedestrian was killed. Traffic may seem light and that you can make it across, but traffic is moving and they cant estimate the speed. And its very dangerous on the freeways. Neither the chp officer nor the dui suspect was injured. The name of the pedestrian has not yet been released. San Francisco City leaders are uniting to combat the car break in epidemic and their plan involves more warning signs. Abc7 News Reporter lina howland was at todays interagency brainstorm. She is in the newsroom for us. And lina certainly so many people absolutely fed up with the number of car break ins. Want to hear more about the possible solutions. Dan thats right. Police say the victims of these car break ins are mostly tourists hauling around luggage and valuables. And Officials Say theyre easy to spot. Usually parking near Tourist Attractions with outofstate plates. And as one resident pointed out today, they dont curb their wheels. So the question now is, how do we warn people who arent from the bay area . Nine and a half months into the year and San Francisco police say there have been more than 15,000 car break ins. So far this year, down by about 500 at this time last year. We want people to be able to come to San Francisco and not have to worry about this. But that aint going to happen overnight. Supervisor dean preston calling for a coordinated response across all city departments to cut down those numbers. In my opinion, the path to reducing car break ins cannot rely on any one strategy to the exclusion of others. San Francisco Police say theyre making progress on a daily basis, with 37 arrests made so far this year in relation to auto break ins. This on top of adding more officers in neighborhoods where break ins are happening, even using bait cars to catch thieves. I think it shows the good work that were doing based on the challenging, you know, things that were dealing with as far as apprehending some of these suspects. Challenges like current policy, not allowing pretext stops, things like pulling over cars for no plates, for tinted windows. Sfmta says theyre working on a Pilot Program to update parking meters citywide with digital warnings on meters and on the pay by phone app to not leave any valuables in your car. Supervisor preston wants to see an upgrade to the citys park smart program, which has similar warning signs up around the city. But San Francisco mayor london breed says it needs to be more than that. Its not just park smart, it its everything. Its awareness. Its ambassadors, its police, its arrests, its accountability, its not just one thing to deal with this real epidemic, not just here in San Francisco, but all over the bay area. I feel very buoyed just to hear that attention is even being paid to the issue. Andrea. Carla michaels, the woman behind lost and found San Francisco. Com reunites people frequently, tourists with their lost belongings. Grabs its one minute to shatter someones vacation and dreams. Shes happy to see more attention on the problem. But believes theres a long way to go. As sfpd says, officers are also working to break apart the groups who commit these break ins because a single group could be responsible for dozens of break ins in one day alone. Live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc seven news. Its incredible how prolific these thieves are. Lena, thanks very much. We want you to be able to get the true picture of Public Safety your area. Abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has a look at the work being done. State route 87 is one of the most important stretches of freeway in the south bay. Taking drivers through san joses downtown and connecting to other highways like to 80, 85 and 17. But the road and its surroundings are in need of some critical work. Thats where the state route 87 road Rehabilitation Project comes in, replacing the roadway pavement with 20 year life cycle, flexible pavement structure. Were upgrading 28 curb ramps at six different intersections and we resurfacing 2. 9 close to three miles of class one bikeway that runs parallel to the main line. While the 69 million project will bring in those necessary repairs, its going to take time. Caltrans, in partnership with vta and the city of san jose, have condensed much of that work into two 56 hour weekends. Were going to be saving time potentially three months by doing the work during this full weekend. Its also going to reduce all the overnight nighttime lane closures or nighttime work that can impact the community. It starts a 9 p. M. Friday, stretching through monday, n later than 5 a. M, the first weekend tackling northbound 87 between state route 85 and interstate 280. Northboundill be closed. And we do have detours. Heres a look at two of those detours. Caltrans is posted northbound detour a runs southbound to state route 85 to northbound 101 to northbound to 80ur b runs northbound 85 to northbound 17, then southbound to 80 though signage with detour information will be on display. Caltrans still recommends giving yourself plenty of time to get to destinations while the weekend work is finished. Work Officials Say, needs to be done as soon as possible before the threat of bad weather impacts the project. If we can go ahead and get this work done before the winter months, that will definitely save us a lot of time, a lot of money and itll just save the impact on the nighttime work following this weekends 56 hour closure. The next closure to do the same work to southbound 87 is scheduled starting october 20th in san jose. Zach fuentes, abc seven news together sj launched its second phase today in an effort to bring San Jose City hall to neighborhood roads and Better Connect with people. Fortunately, now we are have been seeing in the Sierra Nevada scattered showers, some thunderstorms and even some isolated snow showers mixing in with the showers, all in association with that low that brought the gusty winds to parts of the bay area in the hills. Now, that area of low pressure is going to shift off to the east. Winds are going to start to turn more onshore.
