We are told the boyfriend fired on the off duty richmond officer, killing him inside the family house. We understand that the shooter, the suspect, is in custody. The name of the officer was just helped, confirmed, is gus vegas, a family man a14year veteran of the accident. Now they are about on begin the press conference. Lets hear now from the police. Good morning, i am with the vallejo lived and the Public Information officer. At this time we will give you a statement regarding the criminal investigation in this case and we will bring forward including members of the chief of police from richmond who will speak about the officer himself. This morning, the Vallejo Police department responded to a call of shots fired, at 4 39 this morning in the city of vallejo in the glen cove subdivision. A member of the residence reported that there was a deadly shooting and that the suspect had fled the area. Officers arrived to find an offduty officer, gus vegas, 58, down, having been shot multiple times. He was pronounced deceased at scene by medical personnel. There were family members present who said that the suspect was the father of his sixyearold grandson and that the suspect would was identified as robert vega, 30, of fairfield , was had fled the scene with the grandson. Police department was contacted in fairfield moments later and they were able to locate both the suspect and the child in front of an associated residence inside a vehicle. They were arrested without incident, or rather, vega was arrested and the child was take were into protective custody. The child was found unharmed. The Police Detective and members of the District Attorneys Office are with the Police Department and in the process of the investigation at this time. Officer vague sass a 15year veteran of the richmond lived and numerous officers and command staff have been present all morning to support his family which is quite extensive. On behalf of the Vallejo Police department, we, too, having lost an officer realize what a traumatic incident this is for the familiar, but also, for the family at the richmond Police Department. We offer our condolences and sympathy to him at this time. I would like to turn over the mike to lieutenant tan from richmond Police Department who may have some further information. Thank you for attending this press conference. Unfortunately, it is a great sad if we lost one of our family members. I would like our police chief, owen brown to make a short speech about what occurred today. Chief brown . Good morning, everyone, first, i want to say that we are extremely grateful for, of a thorough investigation by the Police Department. We learned early this morning in the aftermath of the events and we are stunned. Stunned. Stunned. Saddened. Still working to process it but things are moving along expeditiously which we appreciate. Gus was a very likable, always pleasant, always in a good mood, just related to other people in a natural way. I never saw him have a bad day or be in a bad mood. He was a wonderful member of the team in richmond and across the city and the community. This is a huge blow for us. It is a tough loss. We will, we are, we will do everything we can to support the Vallejo Police department as it moves forward with the investigation and hopefully the prosecution and i receive gus vegas and his family and do what we can to take care of our work at richmond Police Department. At this moment, in you, if anyone has any questions . Lieutenant, the suspect is vega or vegas . Vega. Your officers name is vegas . Correct the ought suspect is vega with no s . Correct. Any idea what happened . What led to the shooting . At this time we are not prepared to divulge more information because the investigation is ongoing. The investigation is occurring in several different parts of fairfield and vallejo and it is going on as weekend speak, right now, and we are not comment. [ inaudible ] the suspect has been arrested for murder . The suspect has not been charged but arrested. He has been arrested. Is he from fairfield . Where did they arrest him, exactly . The arrest took place in fairfield. We are not divulging the location of the arrest. It was done by officers of the fairfield Police Department. He is from fairfield. That is are he resides. I understand there is. [ inaudible ] there were other family members that were present and witnessed the shooting. We not release any other information other than that, regard the other injuries. No one else was shot i can tell you that the the gentleman is he the boyfriend or the. All we are prepared to say is the suspect is the father of the child who was taken and recovered. What was was the officer in his home . He was in his home when he was shot. [ inaudible ] he is assigned to a regulatory unit in the Police Department and is an officer detective. Can i ask the chief a question . I dont know how well you know officer vegas but we understand he was quite a family man. [ inaudible ] yes, gus was pretty active in the Police Department and worked assignments in property crimes, worked assignment in homicide. He was working regulatory and as a patrol officer, really, engaging interacting with the community and really, really, liked young people and interacted with young people. It made him a likable and loveable kind of guy. He was a Police Officer with us approaching the 15th year with the Police Department. How is the child . The child witnessed this . Is the child a by or a girl . We can tell you at this point the child is six. Part of the investigation as far as what was witnessed. I will not say anything more other than the child is safe and unharmed. Was officer vegas wife at the home and may have escaped out a window and is hospitalized. Can you comment about that . We are not commenting. The investigation ongoing the we are just not confirming. Do you know what time mr. Vega was arrested . I do not have that information. Why was there no alert to the public . That a child was kidnapped . I think what happened is it happened very quickly and when we identified, obviously, who the suspect was, and where they were possibly going and we were poverty enough to have Fairfield Police making the arrest before that was even necessary. Spirit incorrect in saying this is more vegas soninlaw. I dont know their marital status was but he was the father of the child. Im sorry . [ inaudible ] there is a resolution in which we interview children so we only have to do it once by a professional trained to do that. I believe that is happen as we speak and when that is concluded the child will be turned forever his family. [ inaudible ] that is correct, the sixyearold is the grass of the the the grandson of the off y officer. Did you recover a weapon . All the question is about the weapon. We are still investigating that. There are search warrants to served and we not prepared to comment on that at this time. Can you address the fact that. [ inaudible ] what i know firsthand is the vegas family is not only foster parents but very involved in foster greatness which is group that senators the interests of foster children so they are both active in that. Yes, the sixyearold was recovered unharmed with the father and, i believe, the suspect was taken and custody without incident. In a car . In a husband . Was a chase involved . I dont have specific information. I believe it was outside of a residence or possibly in a car but it was in or around the outside the residence. In fairfield. Did the sixyearold. Very somber mood there at the richmond Police Department where the fallen officer worked. We are this to continue our coverage.
