Announcer live where you live, this is abc7 news. A horrific discovery at the border on a sweltering day. A tractortrailer filled with up to 100 undocumented immigrants. Tonight nine are dead and more than a dozen are in critical condition. Good evening. Im kate larsen in for eric thomas. Tonight authorities in texas are considering this an immigrant smuggling attempt gone wrong. An employee at a walmart in san antonio called police early this morning after a man walked into the store and asked for water. Abc7 News Reporter Melanie Woodrow is in our newsroom with the story. Reporter in addition to those fatalities, at least 17 people are reportedly being treated for lifethreatening injuries. The u. S. Attorney office says the driver is in custody. A criminal complaint is expected to be filed as early as tomorrow morning. Officials are calling it a deadly case of human smuggling. At least 39 people inside a big rig truck parked in this Texas Walmart parking lot. Nine men died. The airconditioning was not working, so everyone was removed. Reporter 30 people are being treated at area hospitals. At least two of the victims are under 18 years old. We triaged each one of these people. It was a mass casualty situation for us so we treat it just like you would do an airline crash. We utilized helicopters to fly patients out. We utilized at least seven area hospitals. Reporter authorities found one person in a wooded area near the walmart sunday morning. Its believed many more people escaped before authorities arrived. It wasnt until someone inside the trailer asked a walmart employee for water that that employee then called plolice. The u. S. Attorney office says investigators have identified the driver as 60yearold James Matthew bradley jr. Of clearwater, florida. Bradley, who is in custody, and anyone else found to be involved is expected to face state and federal charges as early as monday. Officials say they will not release the identities of the victims or where theyre from until their families can be notified. Melanie woodrow, abc7 news. Developing news from Castro Valley tonight where authorities have found a body after a threehour search. A hiker told police they thought they saw the body near the Redwood Canyon golf course along redwood road. Thats what launched the search. At this point the cause of death is unclear, but we do expect to learn more from the east Bay Regional Park Police tomorrow. A grass fire that burned near gav lynn college in gilroy is 50 contained tonight. Near castro valentinely road and Santa Theresa boulevard in southern santa clara county. Fire crews say they stopped the flames from spreading at this point. No structures were threatened. Cal fire called in water dropping helicopters and airplanes in the first few hours of that fire. In his final interview, the late actor john heard said he elected to undergo back surgery at Stanford Medical Center so he could get back to work acting. Heard was interviewed by actress Ileana Douglas last wednesday. The 71yearold actor spoke at length about his love of acting and spoke of his older sister and mother, both actors, who encouraged him to consider acting as a career. My mother said why dont you get off your butt and do something . And i said, like what . And she said, i dont know. Something, you know. You got to do something. Hes best remembered for playing the father in the home alone movies. Heard was discovered dead friday afternoon in a Palo Alto Hotel room where he was recovering from surgery. The pilot of a singleengine plane suffered minor injuries this afternoon after he crashed at the reidhillview air important in san jose. An faa spokesperson says the piper cherokee took off from one runway but crashed moments late onto a parallel runway. The pilot was the only person on board. A southwest spokesperson says the problem was fixed after a few hours, and passenger whos were delayed should all be on their way now to their destinations. No other airports were affected. A thrill today for soccer fans here in the bay area. Two of the worlds very best mens teams went head to head at levis stadium. Reporter its not very often when the worlds top soccer players come to the bay area. Justin lara is a huge Manchester United fan, evident from his tattoo. Hes been following the team around ever since they arrived saturday. Seeing all the players up close, they only come every two years or so. So its important. Reporter for others, seeing real madrid at levis stadium was a taste of home. San francisco resident maria lopez larios is from madrid. It is like really amazing the vibe. Its incredible. Its like almost surreal. Reporter this matchup between Manchester United and re real madrid was part of a tournament established four years ago to bring Top International teams to north america. As exciting as it was, many fans seemed disappointed. Players seemingly not giving it their all. This was an exhibition match. It didnt live up to the hype. The game was pretty dull. There wasnt a lot going on. Reporter some key players were missing. Fan favorite ronaldo didnt show up. Was that a disappointment . A little bit. Not like im going to meet him. That would be nice. Reporter despite all that was lacking, many say watching the best in the world here at home was worth it. Soccer team won its game against costa rica over the weekend, so the team will play jamaica in the gold cup final wednesday night. That game begins at 6 30. Here in San Francisco today, a Record Number of runners hit the street for the annual marathon. Thousands of people ran past some of the citys most well known landmarks. It was the biggest race ever for the bay area with extra steps taken to keep all of those runners safe. Abc7 News Reporter Cornell Barnard has the story. Reporter finishing the 40th annual San Francisco marathon earned you a medal and some bragging rights. I did it. Hello. Im done. [ cheers and applause ] reporter 39yearold Jorge Maravilla jumped for joy after winning the marathon with a time of 2 28. We all share one common thing and that is to get to the finish line. Im fortunate to be a part of that community. Reporter 25yearold Devin Mcmahon from stanford was top womens finisher at 2 52. A record 27,500 runners were not far behind, including firsttimer pyu, who told himself keep going. The first thing came into my mind, never give up. Anything in my life that comes in as a hurdle, im never going to give up. Reporter there was a large police present along the 26mile course. The sfpd bomb squad was staged near the finish line. And for the first time in the marathons 40year history, all northbound lanes of the golden three hours because of terrorism concerns. We are very excited to have worked with the Golden Gate Bridge district and all of the local authorities to ensure we were able to do that for our runners safety. Nice and sparkly. Reporter tonight the death of a young wisconsin woman triggering new concerns about the cocktails at some popular resorts in mexico. 20yearold abby connor died in january during a Family Vacation to a fivestar, all inclusive resort in Playa Del Carmen. Her family suspects her drinks were somehow tainted, and they are not alone in their concerns. A 2015 report finding 43 of all alcohol consumed in mexico is produced illegally. Officials there seizing nearly a million and a half gallons of bootlegged liquor from hotels and bars they say could be infused with grain alcohol or methanol. Is someone putting something in the drinks or is it the alcohol is tainted . Im not sure. Or is it a combination of the two.
