Abc 7 News Reporter david louie broke this story on monday and joins us live now with the developments. David . Reporter well, as you know, as we have been reporting, so many neighbors, so many horse lovers in the morgan hill area were watching a certain pasture, seeing how emaciated the horses were and realizing they were not in the best of condition. Well, now their worst fear has been realized. One of the horses transferred here to the Equine Rescue Center has died. Lets show a picture of the horse we are talking about. Its name is justice. Hes a 9 to 12 month old colt. He was one of 11 horses transferred here as part of a rescue operation. He was not part of the original effort to try part of the original group of horses that was going to be transferred but monica hardiman, the head of the Equine Rescue Center, insisted that he be included. The horse had a heavy infestation of parasites and worms in its large intestine. The worms robbed the horse of nutrition. It spread to the lungs. That was the finding of the veterinarian who performed the postmortem examination. The horse was also emaciated, weighing 75 pounds lower than it should. This particular worm competes in part for nutrition that the horse would be getting, that the worms were getting it. Worst case scenario, there are so many of them that you can get an impaction. Reporter is what happened to justice justification in your mind how badly the horses were treated . Yes. Thats why i felt it was very important for us to get them out of there and get them here, because i knew there was something going on, and that we didnt know about. Reporter the other horses are said to be in better condition. They are responding well as monica feeds them. They will be under constant veterinary monitoring and care. Three of the horses you see here are blind and have been separated from the others for safety. Again, a feel for their new surroundings. The hope is to nurse them back to Health Slowly and hopefully they can be then adopted out in the very near future. Monica definitely credits all the horse lovers and neighbors in the morgan hill area for bringing this situation to everyones attention.
