This remarkable achievement is the latest step in a mission that actually began a decade ago and culminated with cheers and hugs in a control room in germany. This celebration went on for a few minutes but the crew quickly got to work Monitoring Communications from the robotic probe. Philae was launched by rosetta which has been circling the comets for week. Researchers believe the comet holds clues about the dawn of our solar system, maybe even life on earth. A time capsule telling us what were conditions like when the earth itself was just forming. Thats huge. Officials say the aircraft may have bounced once before coming to rest. Scientists hope to learn more about the composition of comets and exactly how they interact with the solar wind. Abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield was on hand as people in the bay area were watching this historic landing at the space and Science Center in oakland. Reporter space enthusiasts cheered as space history was made this morning. This crowd started gathering at the space and Science Center at 6 00 a. M. To watch as the space craft landed on a comet for the first time. Its absolutely thrilling we just used robots to land on a comet. It was exciting. Im a picture junkie. I love pictures of other planets and moons. This will be the first time we have ever actually seen a photograph from the surface of a comet. Reporter the actual moment was a little anticlimactic. The audience is watching a feed from europe, waiting for the jubilant moment but it never came. Instead, a worker made the announcement. We just got a confirmation four minutes ago, we got confirmation the probe has landed. Hooray reporter something went wrong with the live feed out of europe and pictures from the comet werent available yet. Still, this crowd says it was worth it. They were successful and we are going to get a chance to see the images soon so thats fun. When you have a historic occasion, people want to be with other people. Reporter astronomers were on hand to explain what was happening and answer questions. They described how revolutionary this is and how getting to explore a comet is like opening a time capsule, that it will help shed light on how the sun and the planets were created. Comets are perfect treasure trove of preserved information. They have not changed since the beginning of the formation of our solar system. Reporter there were some moments where people had their fingers crossed. There was word that the probe lost its thrusters so that just made the successful landing even sweeter. It may not be much rain but we are hoping it gets organized. Heres live doppler 7 hd showing clouds beginning to thicken, especially offshore right now. Notice to well to our west and northwest offshore, we have this cold front approaching and you see little specks of green developing there so there is some moisture content in the clouds, obviously, but we dont see any indication yet of any significant rain coming our way from this system, but we are hoping it will get a little more energetic as it gets closer to us. Meanwhile, speaking of significant weather, check out the polar plunge, as some are calling it, of cold arctic air into the nations midsection. It is currently minus one in great falls, montana. One above zero in denver. Six in rapid city. Notice how much colder it will get overnight. In the Early Morning hours, about 4 00 a. M. Alameda county sheriffs deputies may now have the car that hit and killed a 14yearold boy during a chase last night but they are still looking for the driver. Investigators today impounded what they describe as a vehicle of interest in last nights tragedy. Witnesses say 14yearold ivan cruz was riding his scooter in the crosswalk at east 14th and ashland avenue outside of san leandro when he was struck. Family and friends have been leaving tributes to cruz at that scene all day long. I loved him. He is my everything. Its not fair. He was my life. My world. He was everything for me. The sheriff says the deputy first tried to stop the driver for reckless driving but ended the pursuit before cruz was hit, then another deputy picked up the chase after the tragedy but some witnesses say deputies were still chasing the suspect when he hit cruz. The family of a San Francisco man who has been missing since halloween says they are convinced now of the worst outcome. Hes dead. But the medical examiner has not yet identified a body discovered in the bay as that of dan ha. Vic lee is in the newsroom with late developments. The medical examiner was supposed to receive the dental records sometime today. Once he gets them, he should be able to see if the body found in the bay is, in fact, ha. Yesterday morning, a badly decomposed body of a man was found in the waters near alcatraz. Today, the family of dan ha sadly had to face reality. While the face and body were indistinguishable, the clothes, wallet contents and phone matched dans personal belongings. At this time, we as a family believe the body is dans. Reporter 28yearold dan ha had been missing since october 31st, halloween night. He was last seen leaving his apartment. His parents and two brothers flew into town to join a massive search launched by his friends and coworkers. They printed thousands of flyers, posting them in neighborhoods where he lived and frequented. But he was nowhere to be found. His family does not believe he took his own life. Dan did not leave a note. He had scheduled a doctors appointment the morning of his disappearance and was scheduled to attend a work event the very next day. Reporter his boss said he did go home sick from bad headaches the day before he went missing. But the young man had no history of mental illness. His brother joseph told reporters he wished police would have been more proactive in searching for his brother. But police say they responded immediately the day after the family filed the missing persons report. That was november 5th, six days after ha vanished. The investigator has come in on his weekends off and on evenings working late on this case. Reporter his friends say ha was a Brilliant Software developer who loved life and had a huge heart. I cannot imagine such a sparkling personality being gone from my life. Reporter his parents thanked all those who worked and prayed for his safe return. Thank you very much. Pray for us in the time of sorrow and shock. Reporter sad case. If as expected the medical Examiners Office identifies the body as that of dan ha, there is really only one question left. How did he die. Was it a suicide, an accident or murder . One footnote to this story. San Francisco Police say they receive on average 300 missing persons reports a month. He has been identified as jeremy or Jerry Matheny from riverside county. Sky 7 hd shows the scene on willow place where he was shot yesterday afternoon. Police say he was wanted for several burglaries in san mateo and santa clara counties. Officers say he ran from them after they caught him yesterday burglarizing a business. They say they shot him after he waved a gun at Police Officers. Turning to politics, there is finally a winner in the alameda mayoral race. Results posted today show challenger Trish Spencer has unseated the incumbent marie gilmore, winning by 129 votes. Gilmore had refused to concede until today even though spencer led throughout the vote count. Spencer won the election despite spending only 9,000. An overturned big rig full of frozen turkeys caused a huge mess for morning commuters in san ramon. The el costa boulevard offramp along 680 was closed for several hours as crews unloaded at least 25,000 pounds of frozen turkeys. The chp says the driver was going too fast. Those turkeys will help the hungry through two bay area food banks. Abc 7 News Reporter chris winn was at the Alameda County food bank in oakland when the delivery truck arrived. Reporter some called it a turkey catastrophe. At least 25,000 pounds shaken up in a big rig rollover accident. It happened just after 2 00 early this morning. The driver, who is now okay, was on i680 hoping to take the transition to i580. The chp says he got confused, took the el costa boulevard exit by mistake and was going way too fast. It was dark, he wasnt familiar with the ramp. As he was coming around the curve, the trailer began to slide. Reporter the turkeys were supposed to go to a wholesale distributor not far from the scene of the crash. Once cleanup was complete, the delivery was rerouted to an oakland food bank. This afternoon, abc 7 news was at the Alameda County Community Food bank as the turkeys arrived. Todays experience, while it was really terrible for that driver, is really great for the food banks in the east bay. Reporter a representative from the Alameda County Public Health department was on scene to inspect the turkeys and said they were fine. You see most of the water has actually drained but the street is still closed. We are told jacks drugstore was closed for an hour but is now open. Water Officials Say they arent sure yet why this water main broke but they have cut off the water. The street was initially closed as well but police tell us they have just reopened it. Cal trans announced today that crews will stop installing a controversial guardrail system, one that the iteam first exposed possible safety issues with last year. Trinity industries faces accusations of making changes that led to its guardrails not absorbing impact. Cal trans says it wont install any more until the federal government wraps up new crash testing early next year. Just last week, the iteam first reported the bay area football star died in a crash involving that type of guardrail. His family spoke to dan noyes in an interview coming up at 6 00. A dramatic and scary rescue today at the tallest building in the u. S. , at the World Trade Center in new york city. Two window washers stuck in scaffolding hung dangerously on the outside of the building several hundred feet up in the air. We showed you the rescue live on abc 7 news at midday. The new York Fire Department tweeted out this picture showing what it looked like inside the building. Much better to be inside than outside as the rescue was going on. Reporter 68 floors up, dangling along the side of the countrys tallest building, two window washers getting the scare of their lives when a cable on their scaffolding suddenly gave way along new york citys one World Trade Center. The cables are supposed to come down at the same speed and slack developed in the cables that were on the west side, and the scaffold, of course, went from a horizontal position which is the safe position to what you see up there, the vertical position. Reporter for nearly an hour and a half, they waited, staying tethered to the scaffolding so they wouldnt fall as rescue teams rushed to the scene, clearing the plaza below, making sure people who were there paying respects at the 9 11 memorial were safe. Finally, the dramatic rescue. Firefighters inside the iconic tower which just opened last week using diamond saws to cut through three thick layers of this glass. They cut about a 3 8 inch layer of the outer glass and again, were able to safely move that into the building. Reporter pulling one worker, then the other through the window to safety. Both men taken to a hospital to be treated for minor hypothermia. Despite the dramatic day, we are told they are otherwise okay. They were fine. They really didnt say much. Reporter you can see that scaffolding they were rescued from still hanging there this evening. This is something that rescue teams here practice and prep for. Rain will develop overnight, it will be a wet commute tomorrow morning and we expect sunny days for the weekend. Here comes the frontal system i have been telling you about. Its still well offshore and its another weak frontal system. We may not get a lot of rain out of this but we do expect some wet weather. Lets start the forecast animation at 7 00 this evening. Notice that by 11 00, we will see rain beginning to push onshore, mainly north of the golden gate. Then during the overnight hours, we will see more widespread rain pushing inland but beginning to break up into pockets of rain and showers by 5 00 a. M. , the beginning of the morning commute. But there will be wet spots for the morning commute. It could be a slow commute as a result. Later in the morning, we will see the showers become more widely scattered and they will pretty much end by the afternoon. So by 7 00 tomorrow evening, we expect rainfall totals to be no greater than about one tenth to four tenths of an inch but perhaps as much as an inch of rain in the bay area mountains. In the sierra, light snow, i mean light snow, maybe just a few inches will fall above 8,000 feet. Back to the bay area, overnight, with showers and rain, low temperatures mainly in the mid 50s.
