Reporter california and the bay area are well ahead of other states when it comes to accommodating transgender students on Public School campuses. In 2014, the state enacted the law the School Success opportunity act requiring School Districts to provide access to School Programs and facilitys consistent with their gender identity. Here at el sa reit toe rye school, frints, that meant there is access for transgender students for School Bathrooms but that was just one step. Marcus walden is a spokesman for the west contra costa School District. The state of california passed ab1266 in 2013 and the bay area and this School District have been advocates and champions for civil rights for a long time so this hasnt been much of an issue here. Transgender people are what they want to be. Like the whole point of the United States is to be free to be who you want to be, do what you want to do. Reporter today california superintendent of schools tom tore lick son issued a statement saying, quote, i strongly support the action by president obama to make sure all states follow the lead of california and protect the rights of each and every student. Now, besides the bathrooms, california schools are required to make locker rooms and other facilities able to accommodate transgender students without harassment or discrimination. Governor brown released his revised budget today, the 122 billion ldz plan is slightly less than his january proposal due to a 2 billion drop in rejected tax revenues. The governor says state leaders need to anticipate leaner times so they wont repeat the budget mei takes of the past. Instead of pulling back in the last two recessions, the state of california accelerated its spending and therefore made the budget cuts all the more painful. The governors budget now heads to the legislature for a month of intense negotiations. By law, legislators must send the governor a final spending plan by june 15th for the fiscal year that begins july 1st. Americas Homeland Security boss is taking action to try to shorten the wait times at Airport Security checkpoints. Reporter the couple enlisted help from a family who was on the other side of the river. That family agreed to take their boat out to help rescue the man, but thats when things took a turn for the worse. The family tried towing the mans paddle boat but ended up ripping out their engine. On board a husband, wife and three kids as well as the man they tried to rescue. Burnham and buckley sprang into action from their seaplane. This time buckley tried to help the people to shore. Burnham stayed in the plane to help warm up the children. It was kind of an upsetting and frightening experience. Just want to keep them calm but also take action, get everybody moving quickly.
