Reporter before departing washington with his family bound for vacation in palm springs, now former president obama leaving a note in the oval office for his successor. The two then sharing a few moments together ahead of the official transfer of power. This is not a period, this is a comma. In the continuing story of building america. Reporter President Trump getting right to work, signing his First Executive orders. Before kicking off a day of celebrations. A luncheon in the capitol rotunda. Followed by the inaugural parade. Police, military and federal agents working to keep protesters from interfering. Thousands of supporters lining pennsylvania avenue, honoring the new president. Honoring and some protesting. We saw a variety of signs, some thanking president obama, others criticizing the new president and others very positive about donald trump. We saw it all out here today. There were many people from the bay area that made this trip to washington for the inauguration. They listened to what President Trump had to say as he addressed the crowd today, they watched the ceremony take place, this uniquely american ceremony. I was able to catch up with a number of them. We talked to independents, republicans, democrats, from the bay area to get their reaction on this historic day. Listen. Its an interesting speech. I think the results are going to be important in terms of execution, thats what matters. What did you think of the inauguration . I thought it was fantastic. The spirit is wonderful. Were going to make America Great again. Im actually very happy that im here. We have a new president and hes our president. Its not hes not president for half the country or 45 of the country, hes the president of the United States. Reporter an interestingly that gentleman really identifies more as a democrat, but you heard him say he believes that on this day hes our president , even though he didnt support donald trump and doesnt generally support the Republican Party. Heard a lot of that sentiment from those who attended, even those who were not donald trump supporters, maybe they were republicans but didnt initially support donald trump. Maybe some of them were democrats who didnt support the Republican Party but they came here today to witness history. Of cours many others came here to washington to protest what was happening. You heard jeers and shouts during the inauguration ceremony. Then afterward, things got rather intense on the streets of washington. More than 200 people were arrested during inauguration protests at the Nations Capital today. One limousine, as you saw, was set on fire and the windows of some other cars were smashed. At one point a few protesters used sticks to vandalize a starbucks store and a bank. Police responded by using flash bang grenades and pepper spray and attempted to chase down some of the vandals. Again, roughly 200 protesters arrested today. It did get intense out there on the streets today as it has in many other parts of the country and certainly back home in San Francisco. I know youll be reporting on what happened in the bay area today. But meantime here, as the events at the capitol have shifted now to the inaugural balls going around the city, for the most part the protests have quieted down here in this city so now its an evening of celebration for those who came here to witness this historic event, the swearingin of donald trump, the 45th president of the United States. Ill have a lot more here in this hour, so stay with me live from washington. For a moment lets go back to larry and ama. Thanks, dan. As dan mentioned, there were protests all across the bay area, from San Francisco to oakland to the Golden Gate Bridge, and they are not over yet. We have Team Coverage on that part of the story. Cornell bernard is in oakland. We begin with Melanie Woodrow in San Francisco. Melanie. Reporter yeah, weve seen some peaceful protests today, including right here at city hall. We have also seen some tense moments, including when protesters ignored Police Orders to disperse. Multiple Law Enforcement agencies, including San Francisco police, responded to 16th and 7th streets where protesters linked themselves together over the caltrain tracks. After orders to disperse were ignored, officials lifted protesters from the ground. Were watching you, were watching you. There were at least two people i was close enough to see where i was concerned about arms being broken. Reporter as caltrans employees cut chains, protesters vowed to stand together. We are trying to force hard conversations. Reporter after officers put protesters in vans, those conversations continued on california street. Outside a building, protesters say is partially owned by President Trump. This is day one of standing up for what we believe in and what we know to be true as americans. Reporter with signs held high, protesters chanted and sang. Were happy and we want to continue to push so that california can lead. Officers are here just to make sure things are peaceful. Were working very closely with the organizers, were communicating with them. Police in my opinion today have been here to protect us and keep people safe. Reporter as rain began to fall, some of the youngest ones here sang for light. Before officers and protesters made their way to city hall. In San Francisco, Melanie Woodrow, abc 7 news. And about a thousand protesters also marched across oakland today. Abc 7 News Reporter Cornell Bernard is live with a look at what happened there. Cornell . Reporter yeah, larry. That group of antitrump protesters back at Oakland City Hall tonight. They are showing anger and frustration about the new administration. Its been a day of rallies and marches, all very loud. A group of about a thousand marchers shut down broadway in downtown oakland to protest the inauguration of donald trump. Oakland police were close behind keeping a close eye. From sky 7 the group appeared to get smaller when it started to rain. I am not a stereotype. Reporter earlier, a rally near city hall. There were many signs denouncing the new president , lots of them way to graphic to show on tv. Its a very somber day for me. Reporter maggie lewis wanted to be here. Im a veteran. I served. I served in the United States navy. If i was in the service today. I would go awol. I would not serve under him. He does not belong in the white house. Reporter mark kelsey calls it a day of mourning. I wish him all the best. I fear that he might make good on some of his promises. I hope progressives show up to make sure those that defend our most basic liberties wont be fulfilled. Reporter later a group marched to city hall. All the marches that we have seen today have been peaceful. Many people are heading home, others are just arriving here. The march or the rally is scheduled to end at 5 00 p.
