Is new information about the man arrested on friday for trying to blow up a bank of america bran inch oakland. 27yearold mathieu l is charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Abc7 News Reporter sergio has more. Police first took mathieu into custody at his fathers san jose home. His father called for help. He was held in what was called a 5150 hold. In other words, there were problems he was a danger to himself or somebody else. At the time his father also told police about the ak47 he had along with three highcapacity magazines. Once in the court stempniak they said the extent of his Mental Health issues became clear. The court was really concerned that he was at least bipolar and possibly schizophrenic, and that he had a history of delusional thinking, of fantasies. According to the fbi criminal complaint, he connected with their undercover operative shortly after being released from the Santa Clara County jail. As part of the planning for the bank of america bomb plot, he writes he laughed and hugged the scrubbed cover athas he decided where their bombladened s. U. V. Would be parked in order to maximize the damage. The man believed he was working with the taliban operative, but he wondered how much his Mental Health issues factor into the plot. Concern that a mentally ill person might have been led into something by a Government Agency that maybe a person who did not suffer from these issues would not have been led into. And for as many mental issues that he had, he said the good news is that it appears that he did respond well to medication and treatment. So he said its unfortunate his client is now facing federal charges. Abc7 news. New overnight, San Francisco police are investigating a fatal shooting. Officer arrived to fine a man with a begun shot wound at hayes and webster streets just after 2 00 this morning. He was pronounce dead a short time later. No suspect information is available. The Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that tied up traffic for several hours in the east bay. It happened on westbound i80 in richmond near carlson boulevard just after 1 00 p. M. Yesterday. The chp said a s. U. V. Hit the Center Divide and rolled several times. A 23yearold hayward man behind the wheel was killed. His 28yearold passenger was injured. Traffic was backed up for miles as officers investigated the accident. All lanes were reopened after about three hours. The woman killed on her bike in front of at t park yesterday morning has been identified by San Francisco police. 48yearold Diane Sullivan of San Francisco was involved in a collision with a cement truck traveling west on king street across from the ballpark. Police say the truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. It does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved. Berkeley police are dealing with an alarming spike in the number of rapes reported last year. 39 sexual assaults reported in 2012, the most in the last five years. Its also a 95 increase over 2011 when 20 cases were reported. Police say the majority of the attacks involve students at u. C. Berkeley, not on campus, but at parties in the surrounding neighborhoods where an estimated 35,000 students live. Definitely disturbing that i personally cannot feel safe in this community all the time. And that is a very realistic threat. Historically, of course, these type of things are underreported so we may be tapping into a little bit of that previously unreported issue. And police are saying a campus programming encouraging friends of victims to report attacks could be one cause for the increased number of cases. Theres a demand for peace in oakland. Yesterday several groups, including the art of living foundation, gathered to discuss solutions to violence that can also help the community heel. Abc7 News Reporter has the story. At champ nation boxing gym in east oakland, the fists were flying. This amatuer boxing event drew a large crowd but the gyms owner just wants one thing, to make oakland a saver place by giving young people a focus. I would like to see us, see lot of youngsters come into the gym. Hopefully we can fill the gym up with a lot of young people. And not far away at frick middle school. We arent going to fault the issues in our community if we arent working together. More than 100 people also gathered to find solutions to the growing crime problem in oakland. They called is a solution salon. Here teachers, parents and students opened up about their concerns. Im tired of seeing kids go to jail. Violence has reached a fever pitch in the united states. Last year there were 131 homicides in oakland. So far this year there have been eight. This alter had photos of just a few who have lost their lives recently, including kiante campbell. The volunteer basketball coach was shot and killed february 1st. He was very inspiring to the children and he made us all happy. Some here suggested meditation and conflict resolution classes while others had a broader approach. You can teach a whole freshman class or whole school how to manage their mind and manage their stress and deal with their trauma in a healthy way. So as the high in the neck couple of days continues to build into the west coast, that will allow for some warming and, in fact, temperatures coming up to above normal readings by thursday.
