Now bay area startup wants to use robots to help teach kids a skill that could change their lives. Abc7 news anchor Carolyn Johnson has the details. Reporter this is bo, a robot with a mind of a child. Maybe some day kids are sponges. You expos them to things and they pick up things much faster than you would ever imagine. He is cofounder of playi, a starter that wants to teach children more than how to play with robots, it wants to teach them to program them as well. Kids at a very young age, as young as preschool, can grasp programming concepts. Hes placing it down in the robot. After first designing the robots, the team came up with behavers that a child would be able to both program and enjoy. The key, they say, was coming up with a simplified version of computer code that younger children could learn and then build upon. The Software Interface can be run from smartphones and tablets. In this case colorcoded dots are sequenced to program the robot to play the xylophone. I will go down, go to yellow and hit it again and its a sequence, thats a program and told the robot what to do. He said in test groups the system worked with children as young as five years old. As kids progressed they can move on to more sophisticated coding, including popular programming languages like java. The goal is to teach a new generation of programmers to compete in an increasingly technical world. Computer science in the u. S. Has fullen for behind the rest of the world. There are less than one in ten schools that offer computer science. And that led me to think how can we make it fun, exciting and accessible for every child. Its a process him and his team believe they can jump start with the help of a freewheeling, xylophoneplaying, programmable robot. Carolyn johnson, abc7 news.
