Well talk about memorial day too, coming up. Chris . Lisa, thank you. We want to get to some breaking news out of San Francisco where crews are at the scene of a twoalarm fire in richmond. The fire started just before 5 00 this morning at a residential building near fulton and willard north. Thats not too far away from the university of San Francisco campus. Thats right across the street from golden gate park. You can see fire crews mopping up the scene. No word yet if there are any injuries or how the fire started. Breaking overnight, the california Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash on highway 101 in marin county. The crash happened just before 4 00 this morning in the southbound lanes of the highway near seminary drive. No word yet on the person who was killed or what caused the accident. 8 01 is the time. The san mateo bridge is closed for maintenance. The bridge has no traffic, but theres a lot of fog and crews are beginning a weekend of work on the stand. They shut it at 10 00 last night. The plan is now for repairs and how one group is getting around it. Its a game convention. Not a video game convention. Reporter in fact, its the largest Board Game Convention in the western united states. This is kublacon. 3,000 people are descending on the regency for the event. And yesterday at mission and paradise yesterday is where a kidnapping came to a smashing end in hayward. Reporter the suspects car is a black buick quick lip surrounded by police. From across the street Jonathan Bradbury saw the crash and recorded it on his cell phone. They were asking for a you bar and i heard them asking for it as they got the bag out and proceeded to go to the truck. When they opened the trunk there was a hostage in the trunk. Reporter in his video you can see police opening the trunk of the suspects car. We heard sounds at the trunk area of the suspects vehicle. We opened the trunk and observed the victim inside bound. Reporter police carried the man away his hands and legs tied up. The 59yearold victim had been abducted at 10 30 the night before in east oakland. His kidnappers called the mans family and made demands for his safe return. Police were called and they tracked the kidnappers. Investigators were led to an outside city and a home where they surrounded the suspects who were seen exiting that house. And led the officers on a brief pursuit. Reporter in the Surveillance Video, you can see an suv spin out of control and was rearended but the two culprits were trying to get away. The two suspects are now in jail. Reporting for abc 7 news. The mothers day beating of a grandmother in San Franciscos chinatown neighborhood is now a homicide investigation. The family of the 77yearold woman removed her from life support friday morning. On mothers day the woman started to hit her getting off the muni bus. Three days later she fell down the hospital sending her to the hospital. They believe the autopsy will show a head injury sustained in the attack caused the fatal fall. They hope the community can help to find her grandmothers attacker and the Good Samaritan who helped her afterward. In my heart i dont think ill ever get closure until i find out what exactly happened to my grandma. Police are looking for Surveillance Video to help with the investigation. 8 06 is our time. Millions of gallons of water were lost after vandals destroyed an east bay dam. It happened along Alameda Creek near quarry lake in fremont. Alan wong has details. Reporter detectives think someone sliced a fivefoot gash into this inflatable rubber dam that released 49 million gallons of water down the Alameda Creek and into the bay. Yeah, thats pretty bad. So whoever did this didnt realize the magnitude of it. Reporter a second inflatable dam along the creek was being guarded. Police are checking to see if surveillance cameras captured the crime. Many people have tried before to do Something Like that, tried to shoot at it a bunch of times with guns but thats crazy because they can ricochet and come back at you. Reporter the rubber is oneinch thick and not easy to puncture, but police are aware of the past attempts. We are so close we can hear the helicopters calling them to get away from the dam and off the dam. Er er. Reporter the dam serves 80,000 customers. Why would they do that . New this morning, a Flood Warning has been issued in two states as a river reaches one of its highest levels in year. The red river flows through texas and oklahoma. Officials say heavy rains have brought some of the worst flooding in nearly two decades. Many recreation spots have been closed in the area. And flooding closed all public boat launches on the river. New from overseas ireland is on the verge of legalizing same sex marriage. A special referendum to legalize gay marriage is winning at the ballot box. This morning the Golden State Warriors are gearing up for game three of the western conference finals. The team is in houston this morning but getting there yesterday was a bit of a challenge. And a new roof will soon beover the heads of San Franciscos Homeless Veterans. Its the new plan for mission bay unveiled by mayor ed lee and made possible in part by a multimillion dollar donation. Heres the story. Reporter they say on any given night, 50,000 veterans sleep on their nations streets. Dwayne ray was one of them until he got a job with the v. A. s Homeless Outreach program. Some nights i used to walk all night and then get on the bart in the morning and ride bart. No man or woman, especially those who served our country should have to sleep on the street. Reporter this chairman was among the group of tech and Business Leaders who gave 5 million toward this project which will house Homeless Veterans and lowincome families. The Golden State Warriors were part of the group. It was a call to action its one that the warriors absolutely are answering. After all we call ourselves the Golden State Warriors right . Reporter 101 Housing Units will be constructed on the corner of third and mission rock streets. Its adjacent to the muni line across the street from the new Public Safety building and close to the ballpark. 50 of the units will be for lowincome families. The other 50 for homeless vets. Had dozens of cops and hundreds of onlookers scratching their heads. The chase reached a blistering speed of 5 Miles Per Hour for nearly an hour. The driver led police on the cities of tarzana and encino smiling the whole time. He had signs on his car that read victory parade. But it was not the police who finally brought this ridiculous chase to an end. It was a random bystander who strode in front of the black mustang. The driver stopped police pounced and both men were taken into custody. Police say the driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Oakland City Council will soon decide the fate of the east bay landmark. The henry jake civic center and auditorium has been sitting empty for a decade. In the coming weeks, city leaders look for new way to breathe new life into the lakeside gem. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony explains. Reporter from sky 7 hd you can see the imposing 114yearold Kaiser Convention Center and Civic Auditorium in oakland. To cut costs city officials closed the facility. And locking the gate on generations of memories. Its actually one of the citys most historic landmarks. Reporter kelly kon is overseeing the revitalization of the building in the city. There are people who graduated from high school here, they went to their First Political rally here. Reporter opened in 1915, it was celebrated as an engineering marvel. The ornate exterior serves as a gateway to a lavish 17000 foot auditorium and larger 45000 square feet room. Despite the closure, the building is in relatively good condition. The time is right to find a new user. Reporter the city is now working with two local developers, whoever is chosen must restore the building and allow the public access. So you can have everything from roller derby to a brewery to artist space. To office space. You can create many uses in this building. Reporter they are vetting two proposals to define the future of this building. The recommendations will be forwarded to the council for review. And today san jose state gets to hold their commencement. How is the weather shaping up . You wont get a sunburn, but it has been cool. The National Weather service just tweeted the ninth coolest may on record for the city of san jose. So yeah you probably felt that.
