The president says that his warning of fire and fury may have not been tough enough. Tensions escalated further after north korea announced specific plans to launch four missiles over japan and into the sea miles away from the u. S. Territory of guam. The president is warning that kim jong un will face a u. S. Response like none other. Lets see what he does with guam. He does something in guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobodys seen before, what will happen in north korea. The president is also criticizing his predecessors for not dealing with the Nuclear Threat from north korea. He said its about time someone stuck up for the people of the United States and other countries. Okay. So north korea is, as you know, threatening to launch that strike near guam, which, and they say in the middle of this month. And it would take just minutes to hit its target. So far there are no signs that either side is preparing for war, but the u. S. Missile Defense System is standing by. Abcs jim avila reports from the south korean capital of seoul. Reporter all eyes on guam after that highly specific threat. The North Koreans claiming in days theyll have a plan to launch four missiles into the ocean 20 miles from the island, a launch that would put those missiles on american soil in 14 minutes. They would fly this missile towards guam, but over japan, over highlypopulated parts of japan, which will be very, very provocative. Reporter the island, home to 160,000 american civilians and 7,000 u. S. Forces on two u. S. Military bases. Making it a key launching point for any potential military strike. B1 bombers regularly take off on practice runs. The military presence here, im pretty sure were safe. Reporter u. S. Officials say theres no visible military escalation on either side in response to the heated rhetoric. But for the u. S. And allies, there are several lines of defense at the ready. Here in neighboring south korea, nearly 30,000 u. S. Troops. These patriot missiles ready to shoot down any shortrange missiles. The u. S. Could try to stop a longerrange missile like the time north korea could launch toward guam from several u. S. Navy ships in the region. The last line of defense, the thaad antimissile Defense System. In test, it has a 100 success rate, but it has never been tested with four missiles at once. A preemptive strike could be on the table in the next six to 12 months if sanctions do not work and if kim jong un continues to make progress on a nucleartipped missile a senior official tells abc news. But any retaliatory strike on north korea could be catastrophic. Millions of civilians in seoul miles from the border could be targeted by north koreas artillery and more than 80,000 u. S. Troops in the region could also be in the crosshairs. A preemptive attack would no doubt lead to a broader war, and the human toll would be horrific. Reporter the people here say theyre immune to all the things they hear from the north because they hear it so often. But whats bothering them this time is that theyre hearing it from the United States. Almost everybody on the street you talk to can recite Donald Trumps words, fire and fury, and it worries them. The Obama Administration hasnt responded to that, but there is a former spokesperson at the nsc saying that the president s deflecting blame on his predecessors, because he has no strategy to deescalate the situation himself. Whats International Reaction so far . Theres a mixed reaction. We have folks over in germany and new zealand who have expressed frustration with the president s rhetoric. But then you have people like Prime MinisterMalcolm Turnbull of australia. He spoke with Vice President pence yesterday and hes been one of the people in the forefront coming out saying that they will come to the u. S. Defense and step in if north korea does decide to strike guam. Japan is also offering their services, and we know the u. S. Is working closely with south korea as well. Were going to switch gears to another super power. In russia, this has caught some attention yesterday. The president thanked Vladimir Putin for kicking out hundreds of u. S. Diplomats from russia. Why . And whats the reaction . So the president said that he was thankful to putin for making this decision, because its going to save the u. S. Money, that they needed to cut costs. Theres actually no proof that it would save the u. S. Any money. Theyre going to be on the u. S. Payroll when they come out. And people in the state department currently serving and former diplomats are showing frustration, they said its saddening that the president would make such a comment. Some people were saying oh, maybe he was joking. Theres one former ambassador that says if you are being generous, the president is showing putin he isnt bothered by this.
