Going on there. Absolutely, john. It took firefighters nearly four hours to get the fire under control. Just before 9 00. They can finally say they have things contained inside this building. A big reason for that is that the redwood city fire marshall told us this building is so old that it was not required to have sprinklers, and there were no sprinklers inside this building. If you look behind me, there are a lot of firefighters inside this apartment. Theyre saying it was the top floor of the building, inside an apartment, where they believe the fire began. It then spread down to the third floor and most critically, they say it spread out into the hallway, and that is what made it so difficult for everyone to get out. Reporter breaking out around 5 00 a. M. , many people inside still sound asleep. I heard the alarm, and the firemen started banging on the door. I peeked in the hallway, and there was smoke. I ran back in and got my shoes, got my purse, and ran out. It shows rescuerers carrying that woman down the ladder when she could not get out of her own front door. Neither could roommates adam and matt. He has all the rock climbing equipment. He has been showing me how to rock climb. He tied the rope to the top, and then climbed down all the way down to the bottom there. We didnt have no harnesses. We didnt really repel. We just dropped on to it. Reporter people gathered outside on the street, and police made sure everyone made it out of the fire leaving many with just the clothes thoir back. I was ready to grab whatever i can. I just got my clothes and. The people that had to be for rescued from the top floors. You can see firefighters still inside. What theyre hoping to do is to comb through this entire building, but there are some issues because theyve had floors and ceilings that just are not there anymore. Now, one important piece we want to point out is there are two people from inside this building who are still accounted for unaccounted for at this hour. You hope the people were already at work and they were out of town, that they were not inside when the fire broke out. That is what police here in redwood city are trying to help the Fire Department do is figure out if the two people are okay. There were four people that were hurt that had to be taken to the hospital, but none of those four people had any lifethreatening injuries. Thats the latest here in redwood city.
