The District Office is much smaller than it was yesterday, maybe 50, 60 people, half of what we saw yesterday. But the real impact is the number of absences. District was working on the total from yesterday, and is giving that number in a half hour. Well get that to you later. At last count, 1,200 absences yesterday, four times the normal number, costing the district more than 44,000 in one day. The Teachers Union is threatening a strike. It wants a 6. 2 base pay raise. It must go to increasing services and programs to boost learning for students, who are English Learners and low academic performance, a group he says makes up more than 60 of the entire student population. He says the last eyears the district has offered more than 9 in ongoing salary and benefit increases and thats the best it can do right now. I cannot make support decisions that will bankrupt the district and put us into state receivership. I worked in oakland when they were under state receivership. I do not want to have a bureaucrat or accountant making decisions that are based on numbers and not children. If we do have a strike, where am i going to do with my kids . Allow them to go into classrooms with teacher substitutes who really arent familiar with their learning . And sonja was also here yesterday, youre looking at video from yesterday. She pulled her three kids out of school and said parents are protesting because they already lost highquality teachers. Talks started spring last year. Now both sides are waiting for the factfinding process where a panel hears both sides and makes a decision. That hearing is set for january 20th. If talks dont work out, thats when a strike could happen. And it will be more than a month after that until findings are made public. The superintendent is hoping to come to a resolution before that. Day two here, plenty of students out of school and with their parents. People not giving up on what they say is right for their district. Low clouds come through the bay area, and man, look at this. Were talking about fog and clouds, even still right now at this lunch time hour. So its all because of the storm door opening. We havent seen low clouds like in this season. Stick around all along. Theres the storm system across the pacific northwest. And you can see some clouds drifting on in. Ahead of it, thats the storm door thats open. We are going to start to see showers and thunderstorms move through the bay area as soon as tonight across the north bay. Get ready for it. Were looking at cloud cover across the bay now. You can see temperatures arent going to move a lot. But we will see more sunshine, especially across the south bay. More than we saw actually yesterday. 65 degrees for the south bay. 62 for the peninsula today. The east bay at 63. Meanwhile, the tri valley up to 65. And you can see from sunol still very foggy. San francisco only expecting 59 for today. So the clouds will be with us today and through the evening hours. Look at this, the showers start to move across parts of the north bay around 11 00 tonight. Then tomorrow morning, well see showers across the north bay and really all through the north bay tomorrow during the day, well continue with that light to moderate shower activity. All the way through the evening hours. For us, the rest of the bay area, we will see the showers thursday morning. So your microclimate forecast for today does bring sunshine in here, at least by the afternoon. 65 degrees for san jose. Staying cool at the coastline, and mainly cloudy from pacifica to San Francisco. 55 for ocean beach. Palo alto, youll ma manage sunshine, 63 degrees. Oakland at 63. And the tri valley, more sunshine expected later on this afternoon. Mid 60s for you. All right, lets fast forward this to thursday morning. This is 2 00 in the morning. Youll notice again showers mainly across parts of the north bay. But as we move through the morning hours, the morning commute on thursday will be wet. Were talking about some very heavy rain, ponding on the roadways and the potential for some debris flows and mudslides as the system moves through. Its going to dump the potential of 1 to 2 inches of rain, just in a short amount of time. Friday or thursday night, we get going again with more rain and that pulls out by friday morning. Well start to clear out by friday afternoon. Saturday will be a dry day. But then as we head towards sunday, another storm system moves this way. And thats going to mean for a wet commute for your monday morning. Heres how much rain were expecting. This could be the biggest system of the year. An inch at the valley floor. Same for San Francisco. You get into the north bay. Thats where we could see 1 to 3 inches of rain in the coastal mountains in the north bay could measure 3 to 5 inches of rain, just from this system alone. Also, winter storm watches have been posted for the sierra. Were expecting 2 feet of snow above 7,000 feet and lake level, 15 inches of new fresh snow. So here we go as we get towards thursday. Big storm system moves into the bay area. Thats going to drop our temperatures for the weekend and then as i mentioned, sunday into monday, kris and scott, another storm system. Colder and more rain on the way. All right, anthony, thanks. The biggest of the year, dont forget. Well be right back. Coming up after nbc bay area news at 11 00, access Hollywood Live, followed
