The governor signed a last minute amendment friday that will crack down on anyone who blocks beach access. The amendment is known as ab976. It allows the state to now find people for breaking the law. Since it was created in 1976, all beaches in the state have been considered to be opened to the public. So many Property Owners have denied that access and have pretty much gotten away with it, the only course of action was taking them to court. Weve contacted campers through june to cancel reservations, we also have events like weddings that have been planned. We contacted people that have reserved parts of the park for weddings to let them know theres no water and theres portapotties. They have already cancelled about 175 reservations this month. The Parks Department director said its likely more than 2,000 reservations will have to be refunded for the season, which runs through october. That represents a loss of 350,000 to the county. And its also a certain loss to campers who come here to be closer to nature. And many of whom made their reservations more than a year in advance. Sadness, disappointment. But at the same time, we have to take care of the planet, so that we can come back next year. The Parks Department is exploring the possibility of trucking in water to the camp, and setting up portapotties and hand washing stations. Given the expense and the fact that it would take a permit and approval from state health officials, chances are slim. Memorial park will welcome any more campers for the rest of the season. The county park staff and i feel devastated. We know people make reservations up to a year in advance. This is their family tradition. The Parks Department will decide whether to cancel all the reservations for the rest of the season in a couple days. Thank you, monty.
