The hospital said it would be willing to help the family remove her if it is done legally and medically possible. We understand the suffering and grieving that is occurring right now. But their attorney and family have been unable to produce transportation or a facility that would accept a deceased body on the ventilator. Yeah, i think it is a combination of all those. Reporter its why when keith park came here to work four years ago, he wasnt surprised to learn this sequoia was not doing well. Its okay. Its made it from 1880 to the present, but it does have a disease and we all knew it. Reporter this, of course, was not just any other tree. It was planted here by john muir in the 1880s. In this 1885 paragraph, you see the tree protected by a wooden cage planted in a prominent spot for all to see. Keith soon realized the only way to save this tree would be to clone it. Thats notoriously difficult with giant sequoias. There may be one person in the world capable of doing it. Good thing he agreed to try. He runs the ancient tree archive in michigan. He told us via skype that he jumped at the chance to work on a tree that muir himself had touched. In fact, hed do it for free. Much like he does with other park trees, keith climbed the sequoia with a saw and a pair of pruning sheers. He sought out the newest growth, clipped it and overnighted it to michigan. There it was treated not just with tlc, but with hormones to stimulate root growth. I take a great sense of pride in being able to at least start the project. Maybe my daughter will someday come to the john muir site and see this tree that her dad helped plant. There are a couple of different ideas. Some say plant one of the clones nearby. Others would like to plant the seedlings in spots that are better suited for sequoias. The first step is youve got to be successful. At this point, they are successful in cloning this tree. The tree touched by john muir will survive. We have our tree right now in michigan. There are a number of roots growing right now. They cant stay in michigan. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist.
