Reporter students at uc berkeley are shocked and saddened by the death of a visiting student found dead at a Fraternity House yesterday afternoon. After a party took place there saturday night. We are trying to determine exactly what occurred. We havent ruled out that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor. We are looking to see if maybe that was the cause of death. Reporter Berkeley Police were called to zeta Phi Fraternity sunday to find the 20yearold man dead in an upstairs room. Youre looking at photos from the uc davis students facebook page. I feel for this student because he was probably in an unfamiliar area or maybe he wasnt sure where to get help or he was lost or confused. Reporter the University Says the house is not a sanctioned fraternity. A spokesperson says cal revoked its affiliation in 2010 after repeated violations involving alcohol and hazing. Berkeley police say they were called to the house twice for loud parties last month alone. They have had a warning posted from the city, from the police department, warning them that continuous nuisance violations such as an outofcontrol party could result in some fines. Reporter now police are trying to determine if anyone may be criminally liable for the death. A Maintenance Man says the guys who live there are hurting over what happened. To the south bay, a High School Basketball player from san jose is among two people that died in a plane crash in gilroy. 18yearold kylie vaca of san jose and the pilot, john dennis of gilroy, died when their cessna plane crashed near highway 152 and canada road over the weekend. The plane took off from frasier lake airport east of gilroy heading to watsonville when i went down saturday night. Ntsb investigators were on the scene today sifting through the wreckage and trying to determine why this plane crashed. We have breaking news in the south bay. The suspense is over in the san jose mayoral race. Nearly a week after the election Santa Clara County supervisor dave cortese has just conceded. Robert honda is live. This was a tight race. It appears liccardo is the new mayor. Reporter thats right. I got off the phone with dave cortese and hes conceded the race. He tells me he has not been able to make up the 1 difference that separated him from getting a majority of the votes and after watching the mailin ballots being counted and seeing he was not going to make up that difference he decided to concede the mayoral race, even though there are provisionary ball loots and other ballots still being counted that would make up the difference. He doesnt believe that he can do that so he is decided to make that conciliation. He said he needed to do that for his supporters who have been waiting all this time to make sure that their votes were counted and that he made his best effort to complete the race. He feels like hes done that now. Dave cortese told me he got off the phone with sam liccardo who congratulated him on running a terrific race, and he says that they exchanged pleasantries. But he said that he did officially congratulate sam on his victory. Marie gilmore has just under 50 . Its a difference of just 127 votes. Alameda county still has 14,000 uncounted ballots. Election officials dont know how many of those are for the city of alameda. They were dropped off at the local bus station in tucson, arizona. And we were surprised to find among those refugees children traveling alone. Tonight our team takes you behind the scenes where those children, as young as 10 years old, are fleeing violence from el salvador, guatemala, honduras. According to the u. S. Border patrol almost 52,000 unaccompanied children from those countries have been picked up along the u. S. Mexican Border just through september 30th of this year. In fact, so many children are fleeing the violence in Central America and coming here to the bay area, it has stretched some local resources. For example, the east bay sanctuary covenant in berkeley reports as many as two children a day are now walking into the clinic there looking for legal representation to declare asylum. The zoo today barred reporters from entering the property. But Animal Rights activists are talking tonight. Mark matthews is live outside the San Francisco zoo with what theyre calling for. Reporter janelle, we came here looking for answers. What happened . What went wrong . Whats the zoo going to do to fix it . The zoo didnt want to give us any answers. They told us to stay out. The baby gorilla was a favorite at the San Francisco zoo. A 16monthold female who had survived in spite of being rejected by her mother. The accident happened friday night. A zookeeper was moving the gorillas to their night quarters when the zoo says the baby darted under a hydraulic door that was closing and was crushed. This morning we called the zoo, got no answer. So we drove in and were met by security guards. No press allowed on property. Reporter thats it, huh . Sorry. Reporter a few minutes later a zoo employee came out to the great highway gate and told us, go away. Where we stand at this point, we have no comment. He wanted to meet with the zoos executive director to find out why no one hit the kill switch on that automatic door. Theres another layer to the story. The nurses are in a contract dispute with kaiser, right . Reporter yes, and surely that has something to do with the action here the next couple of daze. Kaiser says it is flying in nurses from across the country to fill in the void here on tuesday and wednesday. In the words of kaiser, it will be business as usual here over the next couple of days. Kaiser says the California Nurses Association alerted them about the work stoppage, so kaiser expedited most of its elective procedures scheduled the next couple of days. The next two days at kaiser, keep your appointments because there will be nurses here to help. Why the strike . Kaiser nurses say they are not prepared to handle an ebola crisis here. So they called this twoday work stoppage to draw attention to their concerns. But kaiser says the Hospital System is prepared to handle ebola. If they come to our clinic or emergency department, were absolutely ready. Weve conducted extensive training, followed all of the state and federal regulatory requirements. Reporter kaiser says there may be unfamiliar faces when patients come tomorrow and wednesday but assures the quality of care will not be compromised during this twoday strike. Kaiser did pull out a fullpage ad in a few newspapers in the bay area asking the Nurses Association why they would do this at a time when there is that ebola threat.
