Accused of possessing and distributing some 10,000 salacious pictures of children. Nbc bay areas robert handa broke the story on twitter and joins us from the sheriffs department. Robert, we are talking about very, very young children. Reporter well, thats right. And this arrest did culminate a lengthy investigation, but the search is still on for more possible suspects and victims. Law enforcement sources gave me this picture of the actual home computer seized in todays raid, which investigators say along with media drives contained 1,000 images and videos of graphic infanlt, toddler pornography and led to the arrest of 61yearold dennis cruz for possession and distribution of about 10,000 images of child pornography through the internet. Im calling him a predator, just because hes looking at the most vile child pornography that our detectives have seen. Reporter the arrest made by the sheriffs socalled s. A. F. E. Unit, sexual, assault, felony enforcement and the Internet Task force and fbi. The activity startled neighbors on oakwood avenue. Should be a lot safer now. Theres a bunch of kids, always, every day, running around, my kids, too. So, yeah, i guess its good he got caught. The sheriff says the next step is to find out if cruzs alleged activity equities tended beyond images. Make sure that we dont have live victims. Well always search to see if there is anybody out that hes had contact with, kids, if there are any victims. And thats the real tragic part of a case like this. Reporter and again, the sheriff says the search is on for whoever cruz may have been exchanging images with, as well as any information on his work computer. Were told cruz moved back home to take care of his mother but the only woman we saw at the house told us she was the maid and offered no comment. Live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. Robert, thank you. A violent 72 hours in San Francisco. Five homicides throughout the city. The tenderloin, soma, among them. Heres a map showing the locations of the deaths. Police have made only one arrest in one of the homicides. One of those deadly shootings happened at a wellknown nightclub with a history of crime. This is the second homicide at the endup club on sixth and harrison. Mark matthews joins us from the hall of justice. Among the primary concerns here, are these crimes linked . Reporter those are the questions being asked tonight. Were at the hall of justice where just last week two men, with gang connections, were released. The District Attorney dropping murder charges against them. They had been accused of killing a 19yearold man at a nightclub just about a block from where were standing. The shooting on june 5th here at the endup nightclub took the life of a 19yearold San Francisco man. Prosecutors say the two suspects had gang ties. That case did have gang overtones. Reporter the police chief says both suspects were released last week because Surveillance Video from the club show that the victim was shot with his own gun. A gun he brought into the club, cocked and stuck in his waistband. We became wear this was a case of self defense. Reporter the District Attorney says his Office Dropped the charges during a preliminary hearing last week, just two days later a fight inside the same club spilled out on to the street and a stockton man was shot dead. Two others wounded. Do you think it was retaliation . We dont know at this point. All we know is three people were shot and one passed away. Reporter there are not a lot of neighbors around the endup. Chris santana lives a few blocks down the street and describes it as a popular spot with some problems, a. A lot of drugs going around sometimes, alcohol. A lot of duis, people getting pulled over. Reporter a homicide detectives are looking into possible connections between the two shootings that came from the endup nightclub. The one sunday morning right there at 6th and bryant. Just about a block from the endup. Apparently the fight inside the club spilled out into the street. The shooting took place just a half a block from the hall of justice. Murdered, a s 33 years a 33 years after this richmond mother of four was brutally murdered, a suspect is finally behind bars. The womans four little boys even discovered her body. One of them hiding you saunder d during the attack. Jodi hernandez is live with what finally, after all these years, led to a break in that case, jodi. Reporter jessica, a determined richmond investigator took a fresh look at this case. She reinterviewed people and reexamined the evidence. And tonight a plaster county man has been named the suspect. Our neighborhood itself is a really quiet neighborhood. Reporter but folks in this quiet richmond neighborhood have never forgotten the tragedy that took place here nearly 33 years ago. Richmond police say marsha carter, a single mother of four, was stabbed to death inside her bedroom, while her four boys, ages 10 months to 11 years old, were home. One hiding under the bed. The case went into moms room, and they dont find mom there. All they find is blood on moms bed. Reporter carters body was found in the trunk of her car in a West Sacramento parking lot a week and a half later. But a suspect was never identified. Until now. Police took another look at the case and finally got what they needed to arrest 54yearold cheryl smuthers, carters former boyfriend. Its a long time. But, you know, better late than never, i guess. Reporter the man who now owns the house where the brutal attack happened says one of carters sons came by the home several years ago. He had just produced a rap album called who killed my mama. Her son was here, and i talk to him and gave him a big hug, and i said, well, you know, i hope i wish you well. I hope they catch whoever did this. And its a heart breaking story. Reporter now we tried to reach the victims rap artist son, but he did not respond. But we are told that the victims family is incredibly grateful. Tonight the suspect is out of custody after posting a 1 million bail. A trial date has not yet been set. Reporting live in richmond, im jodi hernandez. New details tonight on the deadly hit and run in the south bay. Police have someone in custody. It is this man, arrested yesterday on suspicion of felony hit and run. The crash happened around 1 30 sunday morning. Investigators say 28yearold Michael Varilla was found dead. This is the 30th deadly crash in san jose just this year. Not quite as bad as l. A. , but traffic here in the bay area is getting worse. Heres a live look now from one of our live cams in oakland. You can see right near the coliseum, both sides of 880 sluggish as usual. Again, thats near the coliseum. But not just in oakland. A new report reveals the worst of the worst. We have highlighted in blue the most congested spots around the bay area, along the east bay, in the south bay, and up into the Silicon Valley. Reporter some politicians believe that measure on the November Ballot will be the biggest solution to this problem. As you can see here, this stretch of highway 101 off oakland road in san jose was named the fourthmost congested spot in the entire bay area. Santa clara county supervisor dave cortez says a spike in new jobs in Silicon Valley is at least partially to blame for the growing congestion. Southbound i680 near South Jackson avenue in san jose named the third most congested region. A bottleneck drivers dread. A lot worse. The last few years its been red includes. Reporter number four on the list is also in san jose. This part of highway 101 off oakland road. In each case, the majority may be a victim of its own success. The challenge with that is when you grow jobs as fast as jobs are grown here in Silicon Valley, sometimes 10 or 15,000 in a month, its very difficult to build freeway lanes that fast. Very difficult to build housing that fast and were paying the price for that right now. Whats the most congested zone in the bay area in according to a new study by the metropolitan transportation commission, its this section of highway 101 north heading on to the bay bridge. Today local lawmakers talked about ways to help commuters spend less time stuck in their cars. They believe measure b is the answer. A sales tax measure that would generate more than 6 billion. In addition to all of the improvements that measure b offers for b. A. R. T. Extension, caltrain expansion, fixing potholes, it focuses about 1. 5 billion on expanding those critical choke points, the interchanges on freeways like 280 and 101, where we know weve got horrible congestion now. Reporter but some drivers are skeptical, measure b is the right medicine to unclog these arteries. Lawmakers believe that extending b. A. R. Haggerty is considering taking the issue to the joint Powers Authority of the county if necessary. We have formed a working group with san joaquin county. Hurricane matthew is a category 4 storm headed right toward the caribbean. The water kneedeep in jamaica already and more rain on the way. Haiti and aruba also bracing for the worst. Eastern cuba likely next. More than half a million residents are boarding up their windows and trying to store emergency supplies and bracing. Its not on track to the east coast yet. But floridas governor wants the state to be ready. If matthew directly impacted florida, it could be catastrophic. We havent had Something Like this on the east coast in a long time. Reporter the hurricane alert is in effect in parts of cuba and 13,000 people have been evacuated from parts of the dominican republic. Matthew had been downgraded because it was for a little bit a category 5, much like andrew, which was the last massive hurricane to hit south florida. Yeah, and its still even though its been downgraded, looks to stay a strong category 3 storm, moving parallel to florida. Thursday is the day its really going to get south to south florida so if you have family and friends, again, by thursday, that is the day to watch very closely with that large storm. As we get you back here across the bay area, we have that cloud cover here across our north bay camera. Even a few rain drops in san rafael and a cold 61 degrees. Temps dropping to the 50s as we hit 8 00 tonight. A huge contrast from those 90s and 100s we have seen off and on the past couple weeks. So finally, feeling like fall. In fact, i did the math earlier today, and its been about 145 days since we have accumulated anything in terms of the rainfall we had today. Wasnt much,. 005 to. 10. Spotty showers into the north bay, and this is really the zone through tonight from fairfax to San Francisco, back into concord, down to san ramon. Well see the best chance of some spotty drizzle and also mist thats going to extend into your morning forecast, as well. So lets go ahead and take you to that. And you can see, as we mentioned, the drizzle expected for tomorrow morning in the north bay and San Francisco. But note the cold temperatures. Down to 49 in the north bay. 51 for the peninsula and cool 52 in the south bay. I do think eventually as we head throughout our tuesday forecast, well have some sunshine build and you will see that on our microclimate forecast through tuesday. Partly sunny to partly cloudy sky and temperatures staying comfortable. Warming up by 2 to 4 degrees. San jose at 71 degrees for the peninsula, anywhere from 60 at Half Moon Bay to 69 in palo alto. San francisco as chilly as 62 in the marina and 65 for the financial district. North bay, east bay and also for the tri valley, well stay about 10 to 12 degrees below average, with just 69 degrees in pleasant pleasanton. East bay, 67 in oakland and 72 in walnut creek and cloud cover here in napa with 69 degrees. We will start to undergo some changes, and thats what i want to bring your attention to next. This colder trough of low pressure, we have been dealing is now starting to push off towards the east. Thats going to make way for hotter area of high pressure. Thats going to jump temperatures up by 20 degrees on fridays forecast. The key reason why, some drier off shore winds building throughout the bay area. Thats going to be good enough to increase our fire draining and bring us much hotter weather. So lets break it down on that extended forecast. 60s through thursday. And then friday and saturday, 70s return. So a little bit milder with that drier offshore wind. And for the inland valleys, well go from that average of 72 tomorrow to 88 degrees by saturday. No 100s, but a big contrast from what we have seen. Still looks like maybe by the 15th of this month we could get a decent sized storm. Were still keeping our shorts out is what hes saying. Yeah.
