Good evening. I am raj mathai. Happy monday to you. August, as we know it, is finally here. It is hot outside right now. We begin with are microclimate weather alert, parts of the bay area under a heat advisory and we are already seeing fires breaking out, this one burning dangerously close to home in dublin. This is near shafer ranch off 580. Crews say they have stopped the forward progress, but you see the flames there. You see the intense smoke. Before, some homeowners were told to drop everything and evacuate, the fire just yards from a lot of peoples backyards. For i got my computer, i got my bag here and Everything Else is in the house. Pretty intense there. You come home from school or work and come home to this or if youre working from home actually, from what we understand right now, none of the homes were burned or damaged as far as we know right now. The fire quickly burned 50 acres, and an Evacuation Center was opened at the Shannon Community center near dublin elementary and dublin boulevard remains closed westbound. The cause of all of this looks like a car catching fire right off 580, but again, forward progress has been stopped. So, what about the heat happening right now . Lets bring in our chief meteorologist. We knew it was coming and we are finally here. How hot are we today . Youll see here concord got up to 100 degrees. 101 in livermore. This makes the fourth day in the 100s across the bay area. We mentioned the microclimate weather alert. Who is under the heat advisory right now . It is really the eastern section here of the bay area. As you can see northeast of the bay, that is in effect until 8 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Im not seeing any bigtime wind with this, which will help a little bit. The fire danger is going to be elevated because of our drop, but actually, we are not looking at 50 mileper hour winds. Tomorrow, i think were going to start off comfortable. If you need the jacket tomorrow morning, you are not needed for much longer. 88 at noon. 2 00 p. M. , 98 degrees and even hotter than that once we had about 4 00 and 5 00 tomorrow, some spots hitting 103 to 105. A lot of inland counties are going to be the hottest spots. I know a lot of schools in the trivalley going back to school this week so its going to be hot. Another great resource during this current heat, our nbc bay area app, you can get alerts tailored right there to your neighborhood. What about b. A. R. T. As we have discovered, he plays a big impact with this, as well. Hed impacts the rail. In june a b. A. R. T. Trying partially derailed. Look at the view from this dash cam that captures the moment the wheels came off the track. You see that trying going over. The wheels came off there. At that day, temperatures topped out at about 102 degrees. Our Investigative Unit previously learned that b. A. R. T. Had no formal policy in place that day which is surprising, because during a similar heat wave in 2017, b. A. R. T. Did choose to slow down trains for safety , b. A. R. T. Telling us they plan to slow down trains during future heat waves. So, did train slow down today . No. B. A. R. T. Said trains ran it normal speeds but they are keeping an eye on the heat over the next few days. Jackson, what is the policy here . How does b. A. R. T. Decide whether to slow down the trains . They look at the temperature. 100 degrees is the threshold. If it goes above 100 or at 100, that is where they are supposed to slow the trains down at several places where the tracks are exposed to extreme temperatures. At the recent derailment, the rail temperature exceeded 140 degrees. That is 40 Degrees Higher than the ambient temperature. Okay, so if it is 100, the track itself could be a lot hotter. We know there are other places in the country and the world that are much hotter than we are now. How do they deal with track safety for their rail systems . One of the things that makes the barrier different is we have not had these extremes on a regular basis, so that makes us more vulnerable. Where temperatures have been hotter historically, they do things like paint the rail white. They also and to install temperature sensors so they get an idea when they have to slow the trains down to prevent derailments. Does b. A. R. T. Have any other plans to use any other measures here . That is good question. There is still in the study phase as to what caused it. Theyre pretty certain it was heat related and they also say the train bent the rail right as it went around the curve, so that tends to point to this extreme heat related problems so we will see what bart does in future other than slow trains down, which is currently the protocol. We want to get you caught up now and some of the other headlines we are watching on this monday evening. A developing story in the east bay, police are investigating a shooting near that rotary Nature Center at around 1 45 this afternoon on bellevue avenue. One man was shot. Investigators say he was not the intended target. We have also learned that police say they have located the suspected shooter. We will continue to follow the story and bring you updates as we get them. It is now day 10 for the search for 16yearold kiely rodni. She was last seen near trekkie after attending a party with 200 other teenagers near lake tahoe. Investigators say she was seen in a video that evening, august 6, wearing a white sweatshirt like this one shown in this photo. Another clue revealed today that could help identify her missing car, as well. There is a rams sticker just like this on the back right under the rear wiper blade. Investigators say they still need teenagers at that party to come forward. She was driving a silver honda crv, by the way. Every word right now is 75,000 for any information leading to kiley. Another headline we are watching, thousands of Kaiser Mental Health workers on strike in the bay area and statewide. Theyre asking for a pay raise and a comprehensive settlement that would increase staffing and reduce patient wait times. Kaiser says this pandemic has been challenging for the Hospital System and a lot of people in that it has given the union more than a fair offer. If someone has to rate three months, six months and they are already in a crisis, that crisis is going to become full blown where they are going to need a lot more services and care at that point. The unions proposal to reduce time directly seeing patients comes at a time when we are faced with a 30 increase in demand for Mental Health care. Kaiser says it has hired nearly 200 Mental Health clinicians just to try to keep up with skyrocketing demand. Patients will still receive care, by the way, this week during the strike from clinicians who choose not to strike and who are continuing to work. Also tonight, the push for trying to get more people vaccinated for monkeypox. There are nearly 2000 cases statewide. Today, the San FranciscoHealth Department says it is expanding its ours at the walkin clinic. It will now be open from 8 00 a. M. To 4 00 p. M. Today through friday depending on supplies. They say the current supply to last until thursday, but they are still waiting for word on when they will be receiving their next allocation and how much that allocation will be. Even though lines at the clinic or shorter, the hospital that they have become more efficient and are still getting out six to 700 doses per day. Are we doing enough to prevent these types of outbreaks from ever starting or spreading here in the u. S. . There is a team of researchers from across the globe working on this very issue. Heart of the problem . Exotic animals. This starts with the story about the previous monkeypox outbreak are in 2003. A total of 71 people got sick across the midwest and you see the states highlighted there. 18 of them were hospitalized and the source of that virus was ultimately traced to the International Animal trade. Infective rodents were shipped here from ghana. A researcher from harvard says since the 2003 out right, little has been done to address the spread of diseases that stem from live animal markets. Joining us now is and linda, a Research Fellow at harvard, part of the team studying this issue. Exotic animals being brought into the United States. Is this a big business . It is a really big business and we are talking about every type of animal you can imagine. The United States is the Largest Consumer market for wildlife and the world. We bring in about 224 million live animals per year. Another is the illegal wildlife trade, which is maybe another billion on top of that. Thats a big number. In 2003, the outbreak of monkeypox here in the United States did Health Officials at that point make any recommendations or changes . There were a few small changes made, but they were really limited to the particular species that were involved in that outbreak, and they did not look comprehensively to understand what our risk is, what other types of animals may carry monkeypox or other types of diseases that are more dangerous, so we still do not have a comprehensive mechanism to screen the health of the animals coming into the United States proactively so we can prevent this from happening again. I now is there a plan to do that . You would think so. We are about two years into a Global Pandemic that has been brought on by the wildlife trade. Hiv came to us through the wildlife trade. Ebola, sars, all of these very scary viruses, but really, there has not been the kind of comprehensive reform that you this happened almost 20 years ago. Is this a political decision to be made or more of the Health Department decision . I think it has to be a change in a lot of different ways. First, we need more inspectors on the ground. We have about 113 fish and wildlife inspectors who are tasked with overseeing those 224 million live wild animals. If you do the math there, that is not enough, and most inspectors, it is not really their job. They are there to look and say is this an endangered species that is coming in, or is it on a handful of lists that are provided to them by other authorities like the usda, but their job is just to see about if the animals are on protected lists for controvert conservation, that they are not looking for Public Health protection. There is no Public Health screening. If the animals are sick or dead, they are still going to be let in. For this current out break of monkeypox did not arrive here through Exotic Animals, what are there still lessons to be learned . We dont know where the next to make outbreak is going to come from, but we have not yet closed off the door of the huge amount of wildlife that is coming into the United States with almost no Health Screening whatsoever, so i think we really need to look at risk in all different forms, whether that is the Exotic Animal trade or other types of wildlife for human consumption or other things that help happen right here in the United States. Thank you very much for your time tonight. Up next, hard to imagine this during our drought, but are we prepared for a flood . As if earthquakes and wildfires werent enough, scientist or no warning of mega flooding that could hit us here in california sometime in the next 40 years. According to a new study out of ucla, Climate Change has doubled the chance of us seeing a mega flood. Researchers say it would be far more extreme than the flood that forced 14,000 people to evacuate in san jose back in 2017. For the bay area, we are about 8 Million People living in a bathtub. Weve got about 100 billion in shoreline assets at the edge of the bay. These would all be at severe risk from a major storm, especially if it hit during high tide. Are we doing anything to prepare for this possibility . Here in the bay area, the short answer is yes. We are building set back areas and flood walls, and restoring wetlands at the edge of the bay. Experts say the challenge is bringing all of our nine counties together to develop an effective regional plan. So, what exactly is a mega flood, and why do researchers think one is coming . Our meteorologist put together this quick explainer. It is the top video right now on our site. In the bay, there is a gender gap when it comes to our Housing Market and it is all about single women. Figures come from the u. S. Census bureau. Single women are far outpacing men when it comes to homeownership. You can see there is a gap here. Both the Housing Market in San Francisco and and san jose. Reporter it is a pretty wide margin. Single women are more likely than single men to own homes here and across most of the country, so we went and asked single people and real estate agents, how did that happen . Vienna chambers knows the old school conventional wisdom when it comes to home ownership. The stereotype is that men will buy houses for themselves and their family and that is their job and that role. My goal since i was little was that i want my first has to be but by me. Reporter a lot of single women feel the same way. In fact, according to the u. S. Census bureau, more single women in san jose own homes than single men. They also on more homes in San Francisco. In fact, the south bay has the largest margin of single women ownership nationwide, and even though women still earn less on average than men i wanted safety. I wanted good neighbors. I wanted close, good schools. Maybe someday, but not now. Reporter they want to be owners. One thing i believe women all have in mind is the house, the place to regroup, to anchor. This is what it is. Reporter and lock it down. Nbc, bay area news. With us now is just part of the story, the data and analysis. Joining us now, Kelly Johnson with Compass Realty in San Francisco. What are you seeing on the street level . Are women outpacing men when it comes to buying in your region . Its great to see you, as well. I think a number of my single clients that either but were sold a condo that they bought themselves before getting married or are currently on the market looking to have great careers, they may have started a side is this. They are looking for Financial Independence and freedom, and ultimately, Financial Security longterm, and there is no better way right now than real estate and buying a home, so i am seeing a lot of women looking to do this on their own, not looking or waiting to get married or have a partner to do this. I see it on my own personal life, as well, and a lot of my single friends around the country that are very successful. They have their own stock portfolios, and have money and have this desire to really go out and get what they want, and not wait for anything to set themselves up long term. Very interesting. Single man or single women, doesnt matter, is this a good time to buy right now . Its actually a great time to buy. We are seeing a rear window of opportunity, i think, in San Francisco in the bay area for buyers right now. It is almost as close as you can get to a buyers market even though inventory is low for buyers right now, especially during these summer months going back into the fall market, but we have seen a lot of buyers put a pause on looking because the rates went up, because there is inflation and uncertainty in the economy. What we are seeing is less offers that the offer table. You are not competing as much. You have more leverage as a buyer to negotiate, and most importantly, you are buying at what the Property Value is. You are not buying ahead of the market. Three months ago, people are having to spend 20 or 30 over asking. It is really a great time to get out there, and you can always do an adjustable arm, those are the lowest rates and down the road when rates drop, you can refinance. We have not seen that in a couple of years, actually buying from what the house is worth. Thanks for your time today. Have a great evening. Lets take you outside now on this monday, alive look at walnut creek. It is hot and even hotter tomorrow. Welcome back. Happy monday to you. We were talking about the fire in dublin but now we are talking about just the heat in east bay. I think as we head through tomorrow, the most concentrated he does on the eastern side of the bay area. We could get up to about 105 for some sections of the bay area. It is august acting like august. Yeah. Be sure to hydrate tomorrow. If you feel thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated and some sort of fashion, so again, have that water close by. The thing we are following that is ringing in this he does this area of hot High Pressure in the desert southwest, also pushing up some monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms. It really looks like through this week, the best chances of thunderstorms would be over this years and to the south of us. Again, it is all about this hot weather and this system offshore that is also going to bring in a little bit of fog. We will begin with 60s, so a nice start. A little bit of patchy fog in the coast in the bay, then through the day tomorrow, you can see 69 for half moon bay, 74 for San Francisco and then concord 103, livermore 103, morgan hill 100 and again, those numbers step down as we get closer to the bay. As temperatures rise, we have a spare the air alert with the worst air quality near east bay. Once we get past wednesday, numbers begin to drop. It is a lot that are for us this weekend at 87 as we roll into the sunday. Coming up tonight at 11 00, and ultra marathon runner who survived a coyote attack at golden gate park.
